MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK!

The Pryce of Conceit is a Historical Ghost Cozy Mystery by Kari Bovee that will have you looking everywhere for the guilty person. Set in 1885, I enjoyed the history in each scene, and the way the characters developed as they told the story. Arabella Pryce is left with her husband’s haunted hotel. How is she ever to clean this place up for anything? But things take a tailspin when Pryce is wanted for murder. What is Arabella suppose to do?

Kari Bovee writes a phenomenal murder mystery that I didn’t want to put down. With rain pouring outside, this is the perfect book to cozy up with coffee and a blanket. Following Arabella Pryce and her journey form the beginning to arriving at the fallen down hotel and being a suspect for murder, and trying to find the culprit, has me right in the middle of this mystery. I found myself reading and re-reading the pages to try and figure out whodunit. This is such a wonderful book to read. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series. If nyou love cozy murder mysteries, this is a must for you. And if you haven’t tried any Kari Bovee books, this is your perfect time to start a new series. I just can’t recommend this book enough. Run out to the nearest bookstore and find it. I’m giving this book Five Stars and I would give it more if I could.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I was happy to join Grace again in this third book in A Grace Michelle Mystery. I have enjoyed this series so much. This time, Grace is in the middle of stolen artifacts with her dad guilty of having something to do with it. Her dad, who she thought was dead, but he shows up after all these years, married. But with his wife kidnapped, this story takes on a new adventure as Grace takes on this case, hoping to get to the bottom of it before she is in the killers view as well.

Another amazing and fun Grace story. I love meeting the new characters in this story, along with settling back with the characters I love so much from this series. I enjoyed Grace’s sleuthing skills as she goes after her dad’s wife, trying to find who has her. The journey is not an easy one at all. With all of the twists and turns popping up everywhere throughout the story, it is impossible to figure out what is really going on. Author Kari Bovee does a fantastic job writing this one. I’m giving Grace Among Thieves Five Stars! I encourage you to check this book out for your own enjoyment.

Book Description:A ghost from her past. Her sister murdered. Can Grace slay her demons and find the killer before she ends up dead?

New York City, 1920. Grace Michelle has everything she wants: a home, a family, and a future career as a costume designer for famed showman Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr.’s Ziegfeld Follies. Pretty good for a girl who once lived on the streets of New York City. But when her sister, Sophia, the star of the show, is murdered, Grace’s safe and protected life is shattered.

Battle-scarred by the war and emotionally scarred by his past, Chet Riker has made it a practice to keep his distance from others; love, after all, leads only to pain. But Chet has a problem—a big one: he’s become indebted to mob-boss Joe Marciano in an attempt to save his estranged mother’s life, and Marciano wants him to pay up or else. Desperate to get the money, he contacts former client Florenz Ziegfeld for work.

Soon, Chet finds himself playing bodyguard for introverted Grace, who has reluctantly agreed to be Ziegfeld’s new leading lady—on the condition that Ziegfeld promises to find Sophia’s killer. Upon meeting Grace, Chet quickly finds his hardened theory that love equals pain tested. Grace, meanwhile, is swept up in a life she never wanted as the Follies’ star, and as the pawn in a series of publicity stunts during a transcontinental train trip to California that puts her life at risk. Who would want her and Sophia dead? Together, she and Chet must confront publicity-hungry Florenz Ziegfeld, power-driven Joe Marciano, and their own pasts to find Sophia’s killer—and let themselves love once again.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Shoot Like A Girl is the first book in the Annie Oakley Series by Kari Bovée. This is a mystery series based on a real, live at one time in history, lady. I have only heard the name Annie Oakley, but after reading these books I want to follow up on the real life fact of this interesting and intriguing person. Annie made her fame in being a sharp shooter in the Wild West shows. Not the best job for ladies but Annie thrived at it. The characters here are tip top and a lot of fun with some fear following their journey. I think anyone would love to know Annie.

The main reason for this review today is to let you know how I feel the audio book is, so I will do that. Susanna Burney is the narrator for the Anni Oakley series and she does a fabulous job with this book, Shoot Like A Girl Her voice is clear, nice and smooth, and I like the way she can use her voice to switch the voice of the characters. A lot of people can’t do this so well, so I appreciate that Burney can do a good job of this. If you are one who enjoys audiobooks, I encourage you to try this. You get a good Mystery to listen to with the really nice narration. This one is a Four for me.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I have read several books by Kari Bovee and have loved them, and this was is possible her best read yet. Grace has her hands full with so many different jobs she has on her plate, I think possibly the young somewhat fiesty beautiful young girl she has taken in to hopefully use the horses on their ranch to help her and keep her out of trouble. But it seems her beauty and personality gets her into more trouble than ever. I love the horse ranch setting and troubled teens. The vivid details about the costumes Grace is in charge of for the films, Bovée does amazing research before writing this book. The history is so deep and I found myself emerged in all of the history here. The elements of foster homes is touched here, and my heart goes out to Grace as she strives to continue her search for her sister’s murderer. Added to Grace’s sister’s murder she is now faced with the murder mystery that plaques them now, and believe me, this will all keep your mind spinning until the very last page. Bovée has written an excellent story in her unique professional way that will stay with readers until her next book. There is so much going on in this book, and add the texts and turns Bove throws in and wow! This is one you don’t want to miss. With a mixture of historical fiction and adding in the murder mystery and everything taking place. I think you are sure to love this one. And I am surely giving Grace in Hollywood Five Stars and I really wish I could give it more! Go put now and get your copy!

I knew this was going to be a great read by the other books I have read by Kari Bovee, and I was sure not disappointed at Bones of the Redeemed. This story takes place in New Mexico in the 1950’s and centers around Archaeology grad student Ruby Delgado and her quest to find the person responsible for the murder of bodies she stumbles upon, literally. And this is where this book grabs my attention and keeps me on the edge of my seat! I really like Ruby and her feisty and determined personality. I was intrigued as I followed her journey and was able to really get to know her. Bovee does and outstanding job creating all of her characters, but I don’t feel I got to know the other characters as well. Maybe that will be taken care of in another book!

If you enjoy a good heart stopping mystery, I suggest you check this one out. This book has everything you want in a mystery, and it is sure to stay with me for a good long while. And I can’t say any more without giving away too much, so you just need to read Bones of the Redeemed for yourself. It will not disappoint. This one gets Five Stars from me!

  1. Hilary Mantel (Wolf Hall) said that interpreting historical material through the prism of the imagination, “is not about misleading, it is seeing something differently” and tends toward “symbolic application.” Does that reflect how you feel about the relationship between written histories and historical fiction?

I love this question. The most important thing in writing fiction in general is the story. Yes, historical fiction needs to be accurate enough to be believable, but the story is what matters. In some of the research I’ve done for my novels, it’s become clear to me that different historians recording the same history have different biases, and interpret the events in their own way. And, it’s hard to believe that their own imaginations didn’t come into play. I think it’s part of being human. Any given person can interpret an event in history, or the character of a historical figure in a way that speaks to them. We can never really know exactly what happened, how it happened, or how people of a certain time period recorded those events felt about what was happening, unless it is an autobiographical account. And even then, two different people experiencing the same exact thing in history might see it differently from one another, depending on value systems, moral codes, and the magic of imagination.

  1. Have any particular rejections inspired or motivated you?

I think when the rejections started to become more personal and thoughtful is when I knew I had something. It became clear it wasn’t the writing or the story, it was just that particular person—an agent or editor—didn’t have a place for what I was offering. Those rejections kept me going, and reminded me that I am writing exactly what I want to write. Just because they couldn’t sell it, or add it to their line, didn’t mean there wasn’t an audience for it.

  1. Talk about being a healthy writer. How do you deal with long hours of sitting? Do you write standing up? Exercise?

I tried writing with a stand-up desk but found it distracting for some reason. When I am working I make sure to take lots of breaks. The longest I allow myself to sit is for about two hours. Then I get up, make some tea, or get a snack. Sometimes, I go out to visit my horses in the field, or just walk around outside. My breaks vary from 15-30 minutes, and then I get back to work. I will also move from my desk to the sofa just to give my body a break. I exercise regularly and my routines include riding my horses three to four times a week, walking four to five times a week, and doing Pilates two to three times a week. Exercise is crucial for me—I need to get out of my head and do something physical or I go a little nuts!

  1. Share the best book marketing advice you ever received.

When I was newly published, and really for the first two years after being published, I felt I had to do anything and everything right away to get my name out there and to get my books discovered. As I was lamenting this to a friend of mine, who is also a writer, and telling her I was fast approaching burn-out, she reminded me that this career endeavor is a marathon not a sprint. It’s a long-game. There is plenty of time to market yourself and it doesn’t all have to be surrounding the launch. So, breathe and relax. There is plenty of time.
