Book Description:

Two Florida State geology students found the pages written by Ponce de Leon’s chronicler in a dry limestone cave in the northwest panhandle. The original Spanish papers, five hundred years old, were found in relatively good shape, protected from time and moisture in a heavy triple-walled leather case. They chronicle Ponce de Leon’s second expedition to Florida in search of the fountain of youth.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS

Having read Wilderness Spa by Jim Halverson, I was glad when Ponce came up for review. Ponce: What Actually Happened at the Fountain of Youth by Jim Halverson is filled with historical events and the retelling of Ponce de Leon searching the Fountain of Youth. The story is expertly brought to life by Halverson from the pages found that were written by Ponce de Leon’s chronicler in a dry limestone cave in the northwest panhandle. Though I really did enjoy the story and it’s characters, I have to admit I was bored at times. It’s not about the writing, this is a very well written book, I guess this part in history is not my thing. One thing for sure, Halverson clearly does a lot of research before writing this book, and it shows in the detailed scenes throughout the book. If you are a history buff you will find yourself enjoying this story. I highly recommend this story to anyone enjoying a good book with lots of history.

After rocky starts when new members enter the group, they learn to find the best in their fellow travelers, how to help, follow, and lead when necessary. Nothing is ever easy. Without attacking each other, they dig deep to reconcile their differences.

Join the group as they make the best of what they have. Struggle along with them and reconcile your own philosophical belief systems with logic and science.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

In The Wilderness Spa Jim Halverson takes readers on a unique journey through the Alaskan wilderness. An earthquake throws together a unique group of people from all walks of life, struggling to survive. I was intrigued by the way these people steps up to the plate and strives to help each other out. This is truly an interesting group of characters. I love the Alaska setting and the vivid details of this part of Alaska. I’m not so sure I would enjoy being in their situation, but the scenery is beautifully described and give readers a feeling they are right there with the characters as their story unfolds. I think perhaps my favorite character here is Tom, because he does such an awesome job of leading this group to survive. This was not always an easy task because of the group of people involved. All in all I find The Wilderness Spa an intriguing read that I feel anyone can enjoy. This one is Four Stars for me. If you love books full of outdoor adventure I encourage you to check this book out. I think you will find Wilderness Spa a very interesting book to read.

Author Interview – Jim Halverson, Wilderness Spa

You obviously have some knowledge of the Alaska wilderness. How did you do the research for this book?

The most valid research for Wilderness Spa came from a lifelong quest to understand human psychology. Regarding the physical environment, I spent two weeks on a river rafting trip in the Alaskan wilderness, climbed on several glaciers, and hiked in Denali National Park.

One line in the book states, “It’s got to be about breaking the cycle of ignorance.” How is that germane to survival in the wilderness?

The subtitle of the book is, Where physical survival meets psychological survival. The travelers did not leave their civility and intellectual quest for truth in the garage when they left home.

In addition to Wilderness Spa, I know of your first book Trials and Trails. Do you have any upcoming books?

My next book will be released soon. Ponce – What actually happened at the Fountain of Youth is a satirical look at the life of Ponce de Leon. Ponce is a book I always wanted to write since I was in grammar school.

Many books question religion. One of your fireside discussions centers on religion. Is this book another attack on religion?

On the contrary, some participants question the scientific origins of Christianity. When one participant objects and asks, “What if I want to believe . . .,” he is provided with a legitimate method to maintain his beliefs without rejecting scientific facts.

Most of us have a desire to return to a place or time in history. Let me put a twist on that. Do you have a place or time that you think is highly overrated?

That’s interesting. Let me give you a place I would go first. That would be the Golden Age of Greece where critical thinking developed. To answer your question; there are plenty to choose from – the Dark Ages, wars, conquests, and plagues. However, I think the most overrated period belongs to us right here in our own wild west. Between the end of the Civil War and the Gay Nineties many of us visualize an unrestrained open range with buffalo roaming the prairies where independent men and women worked hard and tamed the wilderness. The truth is that the Native populations were being subjected to horrible conditions. Bank robbers, gun fighters, rustlers, and horse thieves, many of whom suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, made the American West a horrible place to live during that period.
