The Creole Princess by Beth White from Revell

Torn between loyalties to family and flag, one young woman is about to discover that her most important allegiance is to her heart.

It is 1776, and all along the eastern seaboard the American struggle for independence rages. But in the British-held southern port of Mobile, Alabama, the conflict brewing is much quieter–though no less deadly.

Lyse Lanier may be largely French in heritage, but she spends most of her time in the company of the ebullient daughter of the British commander of Mobile. When a charming young Spanish merchant docks in town, Lyse is immediately struck by his easy wit and flair for the dramatic. But is he truly who he makes himself out to be? Spies abound, and Spain has yet to choose a side in the American conflict. Is Lyse simply an easy mark for Rafael Gonzalez to exploit? Or are his overtures of love as genuine as Spanish gold?

With spectacular detail that brings the cultural gumbo of the Colonial Gulf Coast alive, Beth White invites you to step into a world of intrigue and espionage from a little-known slice of the American Revolutionary War.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I enjoy reading book such as this one that takes place during the Revolutionary War. Ms. White does an amazing job describing the historical scenes, as well as the political issues, to make you feel like you are living in the story. At first I had a little trouble getting into the story, but after a few chapters, it started to get interesting. I really like Lyse Lanier. Her feisty sweet personality draws attention to her, in a good way, bringing her struggles to life. Her strength and courage helps give her strength to overcome the issues life brings her. I found myself glued to this story, eager to know what the end would bring. I am looking forward to more from author Beth White.

ABOUT THIS BOOK

She’s come to the New World to escape a perilous past. But has it followed her to these far shores?

It is 1704 when Frenchwoman Geneviève Gaillain and her sister board the frigate Pélican bound for the distant Louisiana colony. Both have promised to marry one of the rough men toiling in this strange new world in order to escape suffering in the old. Geneviève knows life won’t be easy, but at least here she can establish a home and family without fear of persecution for her outlawed religious beliefs.

When she falls in love with Tristan Lanier, an expatriate cartographer-turned-farmer whose checkered past is shrouded in mystery, Geneviève realizes that even in this land of liberty one is not guaranteed peace. Trouble is brewing outside the fort between the French colonists and the native people surrounding them. And an even more sinister enemy may lurk within. Could the secret Geneviève harbors mean the undoing of the colony itself?

Gulf Coast native Beth White brings vividly to life the hot, sultry South in this luscious, layered tale.

“Fresh as a gulf breeze, The Pelican Bride is the perfect pairing of history and romance. Finely tuned characters and a setting second to none make this a remarkable, memorable story. Beth White’s foray into colonial Louisiana is historical romance of the highest quality.”–Laura Frantz, author of Love’s ReckoningandLove’s Awakening

“Not your usual setting, not your usual historical romance–The Pelican Bride breaks new ground in the historical genre. Choosing to write a story set in the French colony that became Mobile, Alabama, draws the reader into a new and exciting period. A winning beginning to a new historical series.”–Lyn Cote, author of The Wilderness Brides series.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

This was my first book by Beth White so I didn’t know what to expect, and don’t let the cover fool you! I thought it would be a delicate romantic story, but that is not what it is. There is romance, but the rough situations that happen in this book takes the story to a different level that what I though. And I will say,  The Pelican Bride was much more than I expected. The story was interesting and intriguing and the time period and setting of this story was interesting for me. I haven’t read a lot of books during this era so to see how the French and the Native Americans  lived during that time and all of the vivid details of each scene in the book, the story did a very good job of keeping my attention.

Sisters Geneviere and Aimee travel to American to find husbands, but they didn’t expect their journey to be quite like it turned out. Geneviere had an outstanding and feisty personality and wasn’t afraid to speak up, and it doesn’t take her long to find a husband. But life was not easy in this New World they were developing, and the struggles were almost more than they could handle at times. I had never really thought about how it would be as the people worked to establish the new colonies, and the difficulties they had to face, but Ms. White brought these times to life as she had us follow the journey of these characters. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction. In The Pelican Bride, you will find an exciting twist on historical fiction, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
