Katie’s Song

by Jennifer Beckstrand

Katie's Song

ABOUT THIS BOOK
The expected course of Kate Weaver’s life is baptism into the Amish church and strict observance of the Ordnung. But Kate is blessed with a beautiful singing voice, and when another path leads her to the academy for vocal training, she struggles to understand God’s will for her life. She returns home after a violent encounter with a fellow student, and though she is drawn to the peace and devotion of the Amish lifestyle, could her calling forever separate her from the people and the way of life she holds so dear?

Nathaniel King has never wavered in his commitment to the community and the Old Order Amish Church into which he is baptized. Secretly in love with Kate, he is devastated when she leaves the community to attend the academy. When Kate returns, will she finally make his most profound hopes a reality, or will she break his heart all over again?

Now available from Summerside Press

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Kate’s Song is such a heartwarming story because Kate struggles between her singing and her Amish faith. Her main interest is God’s will for her life, but just what is His will? Is it her singing career or at home in her Amish community? And the Ordnung will not allow her to have both. Kate’s journey is a difficult one as she struggles to make a decision.

Jennifer Beckstrand is a new author for me, and I am very glad I had the opportunity to read and review Kate’s Song. I love how each author of Amish fiction has their own twist on their stories, and I love the writing style and the new twist on Amish fiction from Ms. Beckstrand! I really enjoyed getting to know the characters in this story, though some of them were frustrating at times! Kate was a sweetheart and of course I wanted the best for her, whatever it was! I love how the author weaves the story together with the Amish faith, worldly lifestyle with Kate’s music, the love of family, her struggles and difficulties, along with her faith in God, and the happiness she finds through following what God’s wants for her life. Kate’s Song is writing at it’s best, and I look forward to reading more books by author Jennifer Beckstrand!

After all that literary immersion, I naturally decided to get a degree in mathematics, which came in handy when one of my six children needed help with homework. After my fourth daughter was born, I started writing. By juggling diaper changes, soccer games, music lessons, laundry, and two more children, I finished my first manuscript—a Western—in just under fourteen years.

I have always been fascinated by the Amish way of life and now write Inspirational Amish Romance. I am drawn to the strong faith of the Plain people and admire the importance they put on enduring family ties. I have visited and studied Amish communities in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin where I met with a bishop and a minister as well as several Amish mamms, dats, and children. It has always impressed me at what salt-of-the-earth people they are. My interactions with these kind people have been some of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I have a dear Amish friend with whom I correspond in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. She helps me keep my facts straight and gives me inspiration for my stories.

My goal is to write uplifting, inspiring stories with happy endings and hopeful messages. If my books make readers want to give themselves a big hug or jump up and down for joy, I’ve done my job. There are three Amish romances in the Forever After in Apple Lake Series (Summerside/Guideposts). Kate’s Song, Rebecca’s Rose, and Miriam’s Quilt are all now available. Kate’s Song was the #1 Romantic Religious Fiction download in the Free Kindle Store in August of 2012, and Rebecca’s Rose and Miriam’s Quilt both spent time in the top 50 Religious Fiction books on Amazon.com.

The first book, Huckleberry Hill, is now available in stores and online. Huckleberry Hill is set in Wisconsin Amish country.

The series, The Matchmakers of Huckleberry Hill, is about an elderly Amish couple who try to find suitable mates for their grandchildren. What could be more fun than throwing two young people together to see if sparks ignite? No one would ever suspect two octogenarian Amish folks of mischief.

Romantic Times gave Huckleberry Hill 4 1/2 stars, calling it “A sweet romance with a lot of heart that offers a new, refreshing take on the…matchmaking trope. The storyline is feasible, the characters are well written, with both their strengths and weaknesses on display. Readers will treasure this series and put the first outing on their keeper shelf.”

The Journey of Josephine Cain

By Nancy Moser

About this Book

A pampered socialite embarks on a journey to the Wild West where her life is changed forever.

A setting populated by hundreds of laborers, outlaws, and Indians is hardly the place for a wealthy general’s daughter from the nation’s capital. But Josephine Cain is determined to visit her father, who supervises the day-to-day work involved in the grandest ambition of post-Civil War America: the building of the Transcontinental Railroad.

Life with the railroad is far from the proper life Josephine is used to, and she faces deadly gunfights, harsh weather, and vigilante uprisings. She is torn between the West and the East; between her privileged upbringing and the challenges of a new frontier; between the pull of the suitable beau her parents approve of and an attraction to a rough but charming Irish railroad worker. But if Josephine is willing, and courageous, she just might find a new life, a unique purpose . . . and true love.

Format: Soft Cover, Trade Paper
Pages: 336

My Thoughts On This Book

This was such a good book to read. Josephine was a young lady that knew that she didn’t want to live in her home with an Aunt and a Mother that was still grieving the loss of their sons who was killed the year before in the war. But how was she going to get out of the house and live her own life. Well, she finally figures out a few ways to vacate the house for and get a taste of a different kind of life.

I love Josephine’s feisty attitude. She is determined to do what she wants, and will stop at nothing. The pampered socialite she was, she was in for a rude awakening visiting her father out west where he worked on the building of the Transcontinental Railroad. Life was definitely not pampered in the west, but Josephine didn’t let the difference of lifestyle stop her from helping those in need. I fell in love with Josephine immediately and enjoyed reading about her journey. And the romance was so very heartwarming.

And in addition to the fantastic story, the history surrounding the building of the Transcontinental Railroad was awesome and so informative. This is a subject I haven’t read a lot about, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this bit of history. Nancy Moser did an awesome job of taking readers back to that era of time, and how life was for those working on the famous railroad that connected the east to the west. As you can tell, I love, love this story, and I really think you will too if you check it out!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
Wow, another Susan May Warren book that I love!! Roxy Price now has all of the glitz and glimmer she needs, but it all comes pouring down on her on that one dreadful Black Friday, and she looses everything. Belgian duke Rolfe Van Horne is now her only hope, but is he who he really says he is?
I was hooked from the very first page of this book! As the story unfolds, Roxy’s life begins to unfold as well, and she endures situations that she doesn’t really understand, mainly because those she is involved with keeps the truth from her. I really like Roxy, but I like Rosie better, because she is more down to earth, and as Rosie’s personality comes out, she’s just a wonderful person inside and out. There is so much that goes on this book, so many twists and turns it is impossible to touch on them all, and I love the way Susan weaves it all together and comes up with a story that will make your head buzz! In a good way! I couldn’t put this book down after I started reading it. I just had to find out what was going to happen next, so I read Duchess in one and a half days! The characters have a solid foundation with strength to carry on no matter the circumstances. Roxy/Rosie was a charm, and the strength and courage she shows is unbelievable. And as with all of Susan May Warren books, she never fails to clearly show God working in the lives of her characters. This is what I love most about her books, and what keeps me wanting to read everything she writes! If you’ve never read any of Susan’s books, you are really missing enjoyable entertainment, and as well as missing the blessing of getting to know how gifted she really is

Love Finds You in Glacier Bay Alaska by Tricia Goyer and Ocieanna Fleiss

Love Finds You in Glacier Bay Alaska

by Tricia Goyer and Ocieanna Fleiss

Glacier-Bay[1]

About this book!

Singer Ginny Marshall is one signature away from the recording contract of her dreams—a deal that would guarantee success for the former foster child, who still struggles to bury the memories of her painful childhood. But Ginny needs advice from the one person who will look out for her best interests—her former fiancé, Brett Miller. She travels to the remote town of Glacier Bay, Alaska, where the town’s colorful characters and stunning scenery provide respite from LA’s pressures.

In Glacier Bay, Ginny discovers a box of old letters and is swept up in the love story between Clay, an early missionary to Alaska Territory, and Ellie, the woman who traveled there to be his children’s governess. When Ginny is reunited with Brett in Glacier Bay, will she discover—as Ellie did—that healing and love are sometimes found in the most unexpected places?

Pre-order a copy here.

My Thoughts on this Book

It had been two years since Ginny had walked away from Brett’s love and a life with him, but she didn’t realize what she really did until her trip to Alaska to ask Brett’s advice on a recording contract. He was to one she really trusted enough to talk to about it. But why was she really there? Was Brett’s grandmother Ethel right that maybe God sent her there?

Wow I love, love this wonderfully written story by Tricia Goyer and Ocieanna Fleiss! Ginny’s trip back to Glacier Bay and her journey through the letters Grandma Ethel wanted her to read turned out to be one of the most beautiful and tender stories I have ever read. And I loved Grandma Ethel. She surely lived a loved and blessed life, even though it was simple and she didn’t have a lot of material things. She really knew what was really important in life. And she wanted to make sure Ginny found that out too. But it wasn’t always easy. And I appreciate how the authors show how important it is to make sure we are doing what God wants us to do in our everyday lives.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good, clean Christian story. You will truly be happy with this one. A copy of this book was provided by Litfuse. I was not required or expected to write a positive review. The opinions in this review are mine only.

Ocieanna Fleiss’s passion for writing grew out of two seeds. The first was when her third grade teacher instructed her to read a story she wrote in front of class. As the characters lost their pants, revealing all sorts of goofy underwear, the kids howled with laughter. (What greater comedic height is there for a third grader?) Ocieanna craved more.

The second seed was planted when, as an adult, Ocieanna read The Robe by Lloyd C. Douglas. This book actually challenged her to grow as a person and Christian. Other books have made similar impact, and Ocieanna decided to try her hand at harnessing the power of story to share the healing and life-giving power of the gospel–faith alone, grace alone, Christ alone.

A Merry Little Christmas

by Anita Higman

About A Merry Little Christmas:
Fall in love with this cozy story about two people from different worlds.
Franny Martin is an Oklahoma farm girl who’s preparing to spend the holidays alone…again. Then Charlie Landau shows up one day, all wealth and polish, and offers to buy Franny’s farm. Franny has no money to speak of, but she is clever and spirited, and she’s more than happy to sell the farm and move to the city.
As Sinatra croons from the radio and Christmas descends upon her charming farm, Franny teaches Charlie the curious and sometimes comical ways of country life. In the process, they unearth some discoveries of the heart-that sometimes love comes when you’re least ready for it. Will the holidays bring their most impossible dreams within reach?

My Thoughts on this Book

Fanny Martin finally sells her farm after so many years, so now its time for her dream, to move into town and work at a radio station. Charlie Landau knows nothing about running a farm, but it can’t be that difficult could it? He is ready for a change, after growing up in a wealthy family, but his everyday life was run by his dad. And all he wants is to do something with his love of music.

Start the season off right with this good, clean, light and heartwarming story, “A Merry Little Christmas.” With characters that are believable and unique to the story, we watch them develop well as the story unfolds, creating an interest that will keep readers reading until the very last page.

I thoroughly enjoyed this nice little Christmas story and I sure recommend it to you for a fun and interesting Christmas read.

Where the Trail Ends and Melanie Dobson

About Where the Trail Ends and Melanie Dobson
LitfuseA young woman traveling the Oregon Trail in 1842 must rely on a stranger to bring her to safety. But whom can she trust with her heart?

For two thousand miles along the trail to Oregon Country, Samantha Waldron and her family must overcome tremendous challenges to reach the Willamette Valley before winter. Together they weather autumn storms, hunger and thirst, and the dangers of a wild and unfamiliar country. But when their canoe capsizes on the Columbia River, they must rely on handsome British exporter Alexander Clarke to rescue them from the icy water.
Alex escorts Samantha and her young brother, Micah, to Fort Vancouver. There Samantha is overwhelmed with men vying for her affections, but the only one who intrigues her-Alex-is the one she cannot have. When his betrothed arrives unexpectedly from England to escort him home, Samantha becomes determined to create a home for herself and Micah in the fertile valley far away from the fort. But how will an unmarried woman support herself and her brother in the wilderness alone? Then Micah disappears into the wilderness one rainy night, and Samantha must rely on the man she loves-the man she’s trying desperately to forget-to rescue her brother before it’s too late.
“A lovely, well-paced novel with enchanting characters and surprising plot twists. This is not your typical Oregon Trail story-there is more love than loss and more hope than grief on this wagon train west. Melanie Dobson gives her readers the delight of what happens after people arrived in the Oregon territory, with the assurance that the end of the trail is really not the end after all.”

-Jane Kirkpatrick, bestselling author of All Together in One Place

 MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Samantha Waldron and her family face some horrific situations as we follow their journey on the Oregon Trail in 1842. Samantha’s mom passed away before they started on the trail, so her father was determined to make it to the end of the trail for the rest of his family. But no one knew the many difficult situations they would endure while traveling. Life was not easy as they traveled these many miles.

Melanie Dobson’s story of Samantha and her family along the Oregon Trail is a believable and intriguing story with believable characters that will keep you interested until the end, because of all the twists and turns it takes. The author tells all of the gruesome details of situations and difficulties during the trail, making the story seem more realistic.

I enjoyed this historical novel by Melanie Dobson, though I don’t think it is her best work. If you enjoy the Oregon Trail ere, and reading books about that time, you will enjoy this one. So pick up a copy for your own reading enjoyment.

Queen of the Waves……by Janice Thompson

Queen of the Waves

by Janice Thompson

About Queen of the Waves

Two families on opposite sides of the globe are shaken by the rise and fall of the Titanic, “queen of the ocean.”

When pampered Jacqueline Abington makes secret plans to elope with the family gardener, she concocts a scheme for another woman to take her place on the much-anticipated maiden voyage of the Titanic. From a poor corner of London, Tessa Bowen has been granted the opportunity of a lifetime-a ticket to sail to America aboard a famed vessel. But there’s a catch: she must assume another woman’s identity. For the first time in her life, Tessa stays in expensive quarters, dresses in luxurious gowns, and dines with prestigious people. Then a wealthy young American man takes an interest in her, and Tessa must struggle to keep up the ruse even as she finds herself falling for him. When tragedy strikes, the game is up, and Tessa’s life is forever changed.

“I absolutely loved this novel. Janice Thompson captures the true heart of the voyage and makes us feel as if we are a part of the Titanic. She also makes sure God’s love shines through this tragedy and shows that He has better things in store!”  -Cathy Peeling, great-niece of Edward Smith, captain of the Titanic

“Janice Thompson has concocted a tale I couldn’t put down. Queen of the Waves is a deft weaving of deceit confronted by truth, shame confounded by love, and guilt swallowed in forgiveness. Beautifully written, this is a very different take on Titanic’s many stories-one you won’t want to miss, one you won’t forget.” -Christy-Award winning author Cathy Gohlke

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I’ve read several books on the Titanic this year so I was excited to read Queen of the Waves for another story about this time in history, which I’m surprised because I really didn’t care for the movie that much. But I really like Janice Thompson’s story of Tessa and Nathan, alone with the other characters involved with Tessa being on the ship in the first place. Tessa is such a sweet person with a personality that rubs off on those around her, as we see in the story. Throughout all of the horrible tragedy with Titanic, this is a story readers can really enjoy and appreciate. And the vivid details of the time in history leading up to when the Titanic set sail, and as the story unfolds until the end, well it is just an awesome history lesson.

Of course this book is only fiction, and these things didn’t happen aboard the ship, but I loved imagining what it was like, with all of the rich and famous, and imagining what it was like to be there during the  horrific tragedy. I thoroughly enjoyed Queen of the Waves and highly recommend it for your reading enjoyment. You will not be disappointed.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Elena’s family trip to Mackinac Island this summer will be different than all of the others. This time, her mother has in mind to marry her off to the rich and famous Chester Darrington in order to save their family business. Elena has no desire to marry this Mr. Darrington, or even meet him for that matter.

Chase didn’t really want to make the trip to Mackinac Island with his sister and her husband, but he did want a place to try out the new telescope that the family business was interesting in funding for the invention. One of the first things he heard upon his arrival was his hopeful marriage to this Elena Bissette. Well, he would stay as far away from Elena as possible because he sure wasn’t looking for a wife, and especially someone like her.

Not knowing who each other is, Chase and Elena meet up at an old lighthouse on the Island. One in which Elena has been visiting for all of the years her family has been coming to the Island and one that Chase has just found. The attraction between the two is a sure thing, Chase liking Elena because she’s not one of the “circle” which his sister is in. And Elena liking Chase because of pretty much the same reason.

In Love Finds You In Mackinac Island, Michigan, Melanie Dobson weaves a historical romance that will keep you on your toes throughout the book. The meeting and relationship of Chase and Elena was sweet and adorable at first, that is until the truth about who each was came to surface. That’s when things get touchy between the two and neither want to see each other again! But Chase’s mom had a different idea. Can she bring these two back together again? Or is Chase just too stubborn to face the real truth?

This is a wonderful and sweet story that I thoroughly enjoyed. It’s one of those stories that just make you feel good after reading it. The characters are so real they feel like family and friends. I love Chase and Elena, and I love their attitude about their wealthy families. And Chase’s mom was the character that really pulled everything together. Her attitude about gossip shamed me, and one thing I took away from this book is to gossip, or listen to gossip less, and look at the positive sides of people. I really appreciate Melanie bringing this valuable lesson to her readers about this subject.

I highly recommend this book for you to read and enjoy for yourself. It will make a wonderful summer read, but its not just for summer, it will make an awesome read anytime! And you sure will not be disappointed.
