Book Description:

“I Miss School” is written by a child, for a child. In this heartwarming and honest story, kids will understand that their feelings about the pandemic are normal and it is perfectly acceptable to feel a range of emotions related to not going to in-person school. The book instills hope for kids that brighter days are ahead.

I Miss School by Ryan Reaves is an adorable book by an adorable six year old little girl. It’s more of the thoughts the little girl missing school. The cute and vibrant colors of the illustrations tell the story along with a bubble in the middle of the illustrations with a little girl’s thoughts on her wishes to return to school after a long pandemic cause by a deadly virus. Children everywhere can relate to the feelings of this child, because so many children had the same feelings while they were at home. As the world heals and the restrictions are lifted, this little book can be a reminder of what we faced during that difficult time. This is a good book to have on hand to encourage children to strive to learn even more now that they are back in the classrooms, and it will be a great reminder of 2019 and 2020 and what the country faced. This one is four stars for me.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Now join me for this interview with the author with the help of her mother.

Do you have another profession besides writing?

School! I go to school silly. But I also love to dance. I dance on my own, I was a member of my school, Ivy Hill Prep, theater dance club, and I dance every Saturday with Jamel Gaines Creative Outlet.

Favorite travel spot?

Mexico. We can get there fast and there’s a beach. Beaches are the best even though my mom hates the sand in my hair. I think I will live on the beach when I’m older.

In today’s tech-savvy world, most writers use a computer or laptop. Have you ever written parts of your book on paper?

I wrote I Miss School on the computer. A lot of people gave me notebooks and journals to use to write my next book. I started writing in the notebooks and drawing my thoughts in them. Then I type everything on the computer. I’m using the computer to change things around now so they sound better or make more sense.

Do you snack while writing?

Yes! I love chips. BBQ and the blue Doritos are my favorites! I make a lot of crumbs that I have to clean up but who cares. They taste the best!

What is your next project?

Well, it’s a story about being a princess and how it’s not just tutus and tiaras. I’m having fun writing it and my mommy is teaching me how to type fancy too!

What’s the funniest thing that ever happened to you?

My mom and dad don’t think this is funny but when I was 1, I was running down the street trying to get away from my mom and being silly. I tripped and fell and rolled forward over my head and did a headstand for a little bit in slow motion. I scraped my face bad but the way my mom tells the story, I can’t stop laughing at how I rolled. How do your feet just stick in the air while you stand on your head? I was just 1 year old… man that’s funny to me lol.

Meet the Author:

Six-year-old Ryan Reaves began writing her debut story “I Miss School” at five years old after yearning to return to her brick-and-mortar school during the covid 19 pandemic. She wanted to write the book for other kids, so they knew they weren’t alone in their thoughts and feelings and that we are all in this together.
