The Gentleman Spy & The Lost Lieutenant by Erica Vetsch

The Gentleman Spy iui

by Erica Vetsch

He only wanted a duchess for a day–but she’s determined to make it a marriage for lifeWhen his father and older brother suddenly pass away, the new Duke of Haverly is saddled with a title he never expected to bear. To thwart the plans of his scheming family, the duke impulsively marries a wallflower. After all, she’s meek and mild; it should be easy to sequester her in the country and get on with his life–as a secret agent for the Crown.

But his bride has other ideas. She’s determined to take her place not only as his duchess but as his wife. As a duchess, she can use her position to help the lowest of society–the women forced into prostitution because they have no skills or hope. Her endeavors are not met favorably in society, nor by her husband who wishes she’d remain in the background as he ordered.

Can the duke succeed in relegating her to the sidelines of his life? When his secrets are threatened with exposure, will his new wife be an asset or a liability?

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I was excited to read and review The Gentleman Spy! I love the first book in the Serendipity & Secrets series. I do feel that book one, The Lost Lieutenant should be read before you read this one. Even though the main characters are different and the plot is different, you will get the full impact of the story so much more reading them in order. That said, let’s get on with the review!

I haven’t read anything from the author before reading this series, and I will say, I will surely be looking for more books from Erica Vetsch in the future. I love stories with a Regency setting, and this one is Fabulous! I enjoyed getting to know Marcus in the first book, and Charlotte was a delight getting to know. I love her spunk! And I even like her attitude toward her Father, despite how a high society lady is suppose to act! As Charlotte’s character developed throughout the story, my respect for her grew even more. Marcus is a nice guy but her really gets on my nerves about how he treats Charlotte. It seemed she was getting the treatment every way she turned. Ms. Vetsch has her work cut out for her trying to tackle these men, and a spunky young lady with a mind of her own. And this is not all that’s going on in this story. Many twists and turns take this story in several directions. And I love the way this author weaves all of these issues together and creates an amazing ending. And I have to mention the way she shows the faith of these characters in such a subtle way, that everyone will find it more enjoyable and entertaining to read. If you are a Regency type person as I am, you will love this story. I strongly encourage you to pick up a copy of this book and read it for yourself.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

THE LOST LIEUTENANT

B0851RR29T_c98adfbd_cover

ABOUT THE BOOK

He’s doing what he can to save the Prince Regent’s life . . . but can he save his new marriage as well?

Evan Eldridge never meant to be a war hero–he just wanted to fight Napoleon for the future of his country. And he certainly didn’t think that saving the life of a peer would mean being made the Earl of Whitelock. But when the life you save is dear to the Prince Regent, things can change in a hurry.

Now Evan has a new title, a manor house in shambles, and a stranger for a bride, all thrust upon him by a grateful ruler. What he doesn’t have are all his memories. Traumatized as a result of his wounds and bravery on the battlefield, Evan knows there’s something he can’t quite remember. It’s important, dangerous–and if he doesn’t recall it in time, will jeopardize not only his marriage but someone’s very life.

Readers who enjoy Julie Klassen, Carolyn Miller, and Kristi Ann Hunter will love diving into this brand-new Regency series filled with suspense, aristocratic struggles, and a firm foundation of faith.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

The Lost Lieutenant is the first book in the Serendipity & Secrets series. I love this book. Evan never dreamed or wanted to be in the situation he is in, owning a mansion, having the title of an Earl, and especially being married to a stranger.

As difficult as this relationship is between Evan and his new wife, the story is so interesting to read. Diana stole my heart from the beginning! Her dad and brother has just been evil to her, and now they had no day over her. And I was never so glad. Both Diana and Evan we in a situation they didn’t ask for, but I was cheering them on all along. And hoping they would be as good for each other as it seemed. This book and book 2, you can read my review above this, is the only books I have read from author Erica Vetsch, and I am wanting more from this author and will surely be looking for other books by her. If you enjoy books written about the famous Regency era, you will love this one!

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

About the Book

Book:  Love’s Mountain Quest

Author: Misty M Beller

Genre:  Historical romance

Release Date: June 30, 2020

After losing her husband in the Rocky Mountain wilderness, young widow Joanna Watson is struggling to make a new home for her five-year-old son, Samuel, in the little mountain town of Settler’s Fort. When she returns home from work to find Samuel and the woman watching him missing–and the sheriff dead–she enlists a man she prays has enough experience in this rugged country to help.

Isaac Bowen wants nothing more than a quiet, invisible life in these mountains, far away from the bad decisions of his past. But he has a strong suspicion of who’s behind the kidnapping and murder, and if he’s right, he knows all too well the evil they’re chasing.

As they press on against the elements, Joanna fights to hold on to hope, while Isaac knows a reckoning is coming. They find encouragement in the tentative trust that grows between them, but whether it can withstand the danger and coming confrontation is far from certain in this wild, unpredictable land.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Wow just when I think author Misty M Beller has written her best book, she comes up with one even better. Joanna Watson lost her husband in the Rocky Mountain wilderness this book is set in. The wilderness is a very hard life, especially for a widow and her small son. And when her son and babysitter went missing, Joanna will do anything in her power to get them back.

As I read this book, I thought of how people in today’s world would go crazy because of the time it take to do anything in this wilderness. It doesn’t take minutes or hours, or takes days and weeks. You would really need to trust the Lord and put all of your faith in Him. This is the only way I would have made it through what Joanna went through. And I am so glad she had Issac to help her because he knows these mountains. Issac and Joanna together is so sweet. They just have to get together after all of this. I thoroughly enjoyed another journey through this wilderness country. Different characters and different settings, but the same country land, rocks and mountains. I’m not going to keep going on this because I won’t spoil it for anyone.

If you enjoy the Rocky Mountain territory back in the 1800’s you might want to try some books like this or more from Misty M Beller. They are well worth your time. I love them and I am so thankful to Celebrate Lit for introducing me to Misty several years ago.

The Story Behind the Story: Love’s Mountain Quest

Love’s Mountain Quest was one of the hardest books I’ve ever written, even though I LOVE Isaac and Joanna and their story. What made this book so hard was the fact that I wrote most of the story during my third trimester of pregnancy with our son!

Internet_20200729_204314_4

Our little Matthew is our fourth baby (and first boy), so I was VERY heavy with child during the last three months I carried him, and that was the time that I’d scheduled to write Love’s Mountain Quest. Needless to say, the words were not flowing very well. My creativity was as exhausted as the rest of me! I could see Isaac and Joanna’s story in my mind, but showing it for readers using real words was the hard part.

Thankfully, I have an amazing editor at Bethany House (waving at Jen Veilleux!) who helped me massage the first draft, pushing both me and the story to be the very best we could be. Unfortunately for her, the edits for this book were the first bit of writing I did after taking a short maternity leave after the birth, so my brain was still a bit mushy from all the post-partum hormones and lack of sleep a newborn always brings. Jen’s patience through the process was remarkable, yet I so appreciate her determination not to stop until we had the very best book possible.

Our little Matthew just turned one, and Love’s Mountain Quest is finally making its way out into the world. Because of Jen, I’m so excited to share it with you! I can’t wait for you to meet the characters and story I love so much.

With his career and her home on the line, can they ever find common ground?

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Laura Lessoway and her mom are at odds because the selling if Laura’s grandmothers house. But her mom is selling it anyway. But when the attorney shows up to put in an offer, it just may change Laura’s mind a bit.

Love Inspired books are so sweet and entertaining. And yes they are like a Hallmark movie, you know what the ending is going to be, you just don’t know what all it takes to get there. And that’s the fun part! Right ladies?

I loved Jonathan from the start and was hoping for so attraction between he and Laura, but you can’t make that happen just reading a book! As the story unfolds, so do these characters, and Ms. Whistler weaves together a beautiful story with a wonderful ending. I enjoy this.book for what it is, very sweet romance! And if you like a good clean Romance, this is one you need on your to read list! You won’t put it down until you finish the last page!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

In the Heart of a Mustang is a bit different than the book, Pinto that I just finished reading. In this book a young boy has been told all his life that his dad is a honorable man and died as a hero. But that’s not the case. And the boy is furious that his mom has lied to him all his life. Hunter has always wanted to be just like his dad. Will he continue to work toward this goal now that he knows what his real dad was like?

This story it quite sad because this family has been completely upended. And Hunter has no desire to make things right with his mom. And the only hope is the hope therapy farm. It was incredible how the story opened up at this farm, the staff was kind and caring. But it wasn’t a quick fix. Not at all. It was interesting and fun as I was able to follow the characters, see their development as the story unfolded. And I love that they were all so realistic. I felt as though I was that farm working with the horses myself. I have read several books about horse therapy, have been. very interested in this type of therapy. And this book is full of so much info on the subject. Its clear the author did her research well, and wrote it well into this story. And for you to learn more about this type of therapy, you will need to read this book, In the Heart of a Mustang. I hope you love and enjoy it as much as I did!

EXCERPT FROM:

Under the Shade of the Banyan Tree

Mundane

We run around everyday

busying ourselves in a mundane routine

Getting the kids off to school

soccer practice, summer camp

Going to work, returning home, working again

making dinner, walking the dog, feeding the cat

Worrying about the future, finances

And the cycle repeats

We dread to stop and think

beyond the mundaneness

We continue like busy little ants until

someone steps on us with a giant shoe

and life is over as we know it

If we survive, we become philosophers

to dispense mundane wisdom

that no one cares to heed

as they are busy, too, living their own mundane lives.

Book Description:

In 1912, four men, calling themselves the “Overland Westerners,” decided fame and fortune awaited if they embarked on the longest horseback ride in history. Their goal was to visit all forty-eight state capitals over the course of three years and complete their journey at the San Francisco World’s Fair on June 1, 1915. Facing rugged roads, raging rivers, thieves and near starvation, the men went through seventeen horses. Only one horse completed the entire journey…Pinto, a little horse with a heart as big as the whole country! This is Pinto’s account of his arduous adventure.

Author Interview “PINTO!”

How did you do research for your book?

PINTO was a unique example of how fun research can be. Occasionally you stumble across a story that is so compelling it is hard to believe it is true. But in the case of “PINTO!” and the Overland Westerners, it is! I came across Pinto’s story when I goggled: “Famous Horses in History.” There was a tiny blurb about Pinto who still holds the record for completing the longest horseback ride in history…20,300 miles over the course of three years. I could not believe it! Also surprising was the fact that I had never heard of him before. So, I started digging. I even took two trips to museums that owned collections of materials on Pinto and the four men who rode to every state capital from 1912 to 1915. I first visited the National Western and Cowboy Museum in Oklahoma City. The second trip was to Bainbridge Island, WA to visit their history museum. As I read original journals kept by two of the men, and newspaper and magazine articles written at the time and in the intervening years, the pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place. The curators on Bainbridge Island were especially helpful. They provided me with a full-time assistant while I was there. My assistant photocopied any articles that I wanted and provided the transcript of the handwritten journals on a flash drive, all of which went home with me.

While recovering from knee surgery, I read and highlighted every mention of Pinto in all the journals and articles. Whenever there was a discrepancy between what I read in a journal and what I read in an article, I used the journals. We all know that newspapers and magazines aren’t always reliable! Then, I organized my notes chronologically and started writing.

You take the point of view of the horse. How did you come up with that idea.

I grew up reading every horse story I could get my hands on. One of my favorite was “Black Beauty.” While “Black Beauty is fiction, it is told from the horse’s point of view. Since Pinto was the only horse of the seventeen that joined the journey for a time to complete the entire trip, I decided he was the one who deserved to tell the story. My lifelong love of horses, and experience with them, helped me put myself into Pinto’s place. I have used the technique of anthropomorphism in several of my books and enjoy doing so.

How Long have you been writing?

I have been writing all my life in one form or another. As a teacher, I was often drafted to write curriculum. As a child I wrote stories…always about horses of course. But once my five children all entered school, I finally had time to write the stories that I had in my head. My first book was published in 2005. It is an equestrian trail guidebook for Colorado.

What is the funniest thing that ever happened to you?

The one thing that comes to mind regarding funny things that happen to me as an author is in regard to my “Riding Colorado” trail guidebooks. I have written three of them and on each cover there is a picture of me on my horse. One day, I was coming back to my horse trailer after riding on a mountain trail when I noticed some other women were at the trailhead. They ran up to me and said, “You wrote ‘Riding Colorado’ didn’t you?”

I said, “Yes. How did you recognize me?”

They responded, “Oh we didn’t. We recognized your horse!”

That was a humbling experience!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Pinto is a great read for your child to read. I think maybe 4th grade and up. And especially if the enjoy horse stories. This story is about a group of men who called themselves the “Overland Westerners” decided to ride on horses to every state Capitol in the US, taking a picture with the Governor and traveling on to the next. They also expected to be taken care of where then landed in a state. But that was not so easily done. A lot of people were not familiar with this group, and could have cared less, even the governor. It was a mixture, some of the states welcomed them and set them up, fed them and sent them on their way, some did not. They didn’t have a lot of money and struggled quite a bit, went hungry, but was still determined to complete their mission. Could Pinto last for 3 years and thousands of miles? Is he strong enough to carry his load to the end of their journey?

This is a cute story with and even cuter horse named Pinto. The author tells this story through the eyes of Pinto, which was so fun and interesting. I enjoyed the conversations between the horses as much as I did the men! I think my take from this book is wondering what our animals really are thinking about us! Now every time I am with an animal close up I will always be wondering what they are thinking. I will also look for signs of the reactions to see if I can figure them out!

One more thing, this story is based on a true story. There really was a group of men that took this journey. The author has a ton of info in the back of the book if you would be so interested to check it out. There are maps, pictures taken during the real original tour back in the early 1900’s. A list of states and dates the Overland Westerners were there, resources for articles and songs. And I found all if this so interesting. A MUST read for horse lovers!!

If you enjoy horse stories, or if you have children who do, this is a sweet read, and I hope you enjoy as much as I did!! If you love history, you will have a blast with all of the history on this book, as well as researching  everything the author has added for readers.  And I can’t forget about the stunning the cover. Love the horse there.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Horses as Healers

“In the Heart of a Mustang” is set at a horse therapy ranch in Arizona. Promise Ranch is a place where troubled teens are helped by working with horses. For several years, I worked for Path, Intl., the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, International. Its headquarters are in Denver, where I live. I helped organize the conferences where riding instructors go to get their training to become certified to work with disabled children and adults. It was there that I first saw how healing horses were, not just for disabled people, but for at-risk youth as well. You may have heard about the success some prisons have had adopting wild mustangs and teaching the inmates how to train them. The inmates not only learn about the horse they are assigned, but they learn about themselves as well as man and animal work together to build a partnership. I took that concept and put it into my book. Hunter, a troubled teen, learns what works with the horse is also what works in life.

I witnessed some amazing things when I worked for PATH, things that make me cry even now as I think about them. One little autistic boy, perhaps five years old, had never spoken a word in his life. He came to the barn and was put on a horse and he started talking! Several PATH centers have programs for Veterans. When I was at PATH, I helped set up a scholarship program through Wounded Warriors. Some of the veterans are having to learn to function without an arm or leg. Others suffer from the ugly scars left from PTSD. These men and women soon learn that horses don’t judge them. The horses seem to sense what they need and willingly provide whatever that is.

Miracles happen every day and horses are often the providers of those miracles. I know the healing power of horses in my own life as I’ve suffered the loss of my parents or just day to day trials. I guess that is why I love to write about horses so much!

I hope you enjoy reading “In the Heart of a Mustang.” Perhaps a horse will be your healer, too!

Launch – Author Interview

What do you hope readers will take with them after they’ve read it?

First, I hope readers will find a sweet romance at the center of the story. I enjoy writing about two people who don’t want to fall in love but who fall in love anyway. Second and most important, I pray that readers will take one step closer to God because of something they find in How Sweet It Is.

All-of-kind Mom – Review

“Another story about some broken people finding their way.

A story about trusting, forgiveness, and love. . . . Robin Lee Hatcher writes sweet romances that show us God’s love. This book is an excellent [example] of this.”

Simply Susan – Review

“Robin Lee Hatcher’s books have always been an automatic read for me. Her Legacy of Faith series has certainly been very heartwarming and poignant, this book pouring many blessings into my heart. . . . So many precious nuggets were found in this book. Highly recommended.”

Red Headed Book Lady – Review

“When you pick up a Robin Lee Hatcher book you know it’s going to be good! . . . Hatcher has done a nice job in tying the past with the present together once again. . . . I highly recommend this book because you’ll not want to put it down until you finish. This book will leave you feeling full and satisfied after a good read. Kind of like a wonderful dessert.”

Hearts & Scribbles – Excerpt

“Thanks. You too. How are the wedding plans?”

“That’s why I’m here. Holly and I were going over wedding-cake ideas and looking at all the bride magazines I could find.”

Jed took a half step back. “Sounds like I’m intruding after all.”

“No, you’re not. We’re done. I was about to head home.” Trixie tipped her head slightly to one side.

Jed had the sudden feeling that he was being measured, studied, put under a microscope. Not a comfortable sensation.

Britt Reads Fiction – Review

“This novel was a nice way to round out the Legacy of Faith series. I believe that it can be read and understood without reading the first two books in the series. However, I feel that I had a greater appreciation for the historical portion of the novel because I have read the entire series.

I thought that Jed and Holly’s relationship growth throughout the story felt realistic.”

ReviewsByErin – Review

“There was a beautiful layer of faith presented, and hope for those facing family conflicts. I can imagine a lot of people will enjoy this as a light read. I would highly recommend reading the whole series to get the full impact of Andrew’s story.”

fierymermaidbooks – Review

“I loved this book! It made me want to bake a million things! . . . The family aspect was also super interesting! If you are looking for a great contemporary, then I suggest this one!”

Ponderings from the Inglenook – Review

“The story is one of healing and love and family and belonging. You go on the journey with Holly and Jed, two people who are dealing with their own set of struggles of trust, hurt and wanting something more. Along with their story, is the story of Jed’s grandfather, Andrew. Popping back and forth from present day to Grandpa Andrew’s day, the story of family and legacy is told. It was a heartwarming story that slowly took you from one place to the next with each chapter.”

Christy’s Cozy Corners – Review

How Sweet It Is is just as sweet as its title suggests! It’s a clean, inspirational romance that will challenge you to trust that God has your future in His hands. . . . The characters and the love that develops between them are very believable. But I think that the best part of the book is watching God’s plan unfold. . . . I have always loved Robin Lee Hatcher’s books, and How Sweet It Is is no exception.”

reviewingbooksplusmore – Review

How Sweet It Is was a book that had me hooked from the very first word. I love reading books that connect with two time periods.

I loved Andrew and Helen’s story that was set in 1969 to 1970. They had such a fantastic love story. . . . The characters were so real to me. I could visualize what they were doing.”

Daysong Reflections – Review

“As can be expected, How Sweet It Is uses Andrew’s bible to once again bring a family member back to their walk of faith. . . . It was encouraging to read about how seeming coincidences actually became evident as the obvious leading of the Lord.

A sweet romance, How Sweet It Is was easy to read and enjoyable. Although filled with scripture references, the faith element was not intrusive and did not detract from the story.”

Two Points of Interest – Spotlight

Pause for Tales – Review

“There was many beautiful lessons and truths in this story that pulled at my heartstrings. I enjoyed watching each of the people grow into better versions of themselves as they took away lessons from their ancestor Andrew Henning. This was a beautiful story of family and their legacy of faith and what that can mean for generations.”

Splashes of Joy – Review

“I have read many of Robin Lee Hatcher’s books and love them all, and was excited to read and review this one. There is so much in this story, twists and turns that surprise you, making it a wonderful and entertaining read. If you enjoy a good clean Christian fiction, you don’t want to miss How Sweet It Is. Because Jed and Holly’s story truly is a really sweet story.”

Rockin’ Book Reviews – Review

“This is a really nice love story, within a love story. . . . The characters were all portrayed well and very endearing. Although this [drama] was very predictable, it was very well written and inspiring.”

Read Review Rejoice – Excerpt

“Holly, you may be older than me, but you don’t know much about men. Have you noticed the way he looks at you?”

It frightened her, thinking Trixie might be right. It frightened her even more, thinking she wanted her sister to be right. “Don’t.”

“Don’t what?”

“Don’t read too much into it. I . . . I’m not ready.”

Adventurous Bookworm – Review

“I was elated when I found that I’d get to read the third book of this series. I had read book two at its release last year and was eagerly waiting to read this one. I am happy to say that it lived up to my expectations. . . . All in all, I enjoyed this last book and it was definitely the uplifting read that I had been craving.”

Locks, Hooks and Books – Review

“I loved this sweet and delightful read. I adored Jed and Holly. They had perfect chemistry, making the book fun and entertaining. There was a little twist and turn I did not expect which made the story quite unpredictable. . . . I recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean and inspiring romance.”

Labor Not in Vain – Review

“I loved returning to the Hennings family as this book continues to follow Andrew and Helen decades previous, while also catching up with their descendants in the present. The dual timelines are well written and compliment each other well. I loved the themes of faith and commitment, as Jed takes time to consider things he hasn’t had time for the in the past. A heartwarming and enjoyable read about family, faith, new opportunities and lasting love.”

Loraine D Nunley, Author – Review

“This was a sweet romance. I liked the chemistry between Holly and Jed. . . . I would recommend this as a quick clean inspirational romance. This is the third book in the series. It reads well as a stand alone.”

Uplifting Reads – Excerpt

His smile made a shiver run down her spine. A pleasurable kind of shiver. One of anticipation. Something flickered in his eyes. Understanding, perhaps. With it, his smile faded. His eyes seemed to darken as he gazed intently into hers. His right hand rose to cup her cheek, the flat of his hand gentle against her skin. She couldn’t help but press into it. She was tempted to close her eyes, but she didn’t want to break the look passing between them. His face drew closer. Was this happening?

“Holly.” He whispered her name, as soft as a caress.

She feared her knees would buckle. Breathe, she reminded herself. Just breathe.

Hallie Reads – Review

How Sweet It Is is a sweet story from Robin Lee Hatcher indeed . . . As romance and understanding grow, the present timeline complements Andrew’s one in the past to deliver a valuable message about trusting God through the good and the bad. Readers who have enjoyed the Legacy of Faith thus far are sure to enjoy this book; it is a satisfying conclusion.”

Remembrancy – Review

How Sweet It Is has some light-hearted moments that made me smile and some tougher moments that had me reaching for the tissues. Throughout the book, the message of the power, importance, and comfort of spending time digging into God’s word and building a strong relationship with Him rings through. This is an excellent end to the series, and like the author, I am sad to say goodbye to Andrew and his descendants.”

Jorie Loves A Story – Review

“I love authors who can hook us into the emotional framework of a character immediately after we’ve started to read their story. With Hatcher, you don’t have to wait long, as even within the Prologue of How Sweet It Is – you are rooted into the emotional heartache and anguish of Jed. . . . What I enjoyed the most though – is seeing how two ordinary people who weren’t expecting anything extraordinary to happen to them suddenly find themselves in the middle of their own romance story! And that dear hearts, is why I kept turning the pages. . .”

Among the Reads – Review

“Lovers of more serious stories with the light of faith shining through will want to be sure to read How Sweet It Is. And while it easily stands alone, it builds on the events of the previous books of the Legacy of Faith series, so you’ll want to be sure to read them as well.”

Tell Tale Book Reviews – Review

“As with the previous books in the Legacy Of Faith series Robin Lee Hatcher presents a sweet romance combined with the reality of the messiness of family. . . . As much as I enjoyed the romance between Holly and Jed . . . it was still the sections with Andrew that I most looked forward to. Across three books he’s gone through tragedy and triumph from young manhood to retirement age. He has faced each struggle with love and a faith that is to be admired. . . . It was just as wonderful, and bittersweet, as its predecessors. It is very much a book that you shouldn’t miss.”

Beauty in the Binding – Excerpt

Inside, Pumpkin welcomed her home with a loud meow. After setting aside her purse, Holly picked up the cat and buried her face in the feline’s long hair.

“Sweetheart, what am I going to do?”

Pumpkin answered with a purr.

“You never lie to me, do you? You’re just who you say you are.”

She carried the cat with her into the living room, stopping long enough to turn on the lamp before settling onto the sofa.

“I’m at the end. I don’t know what to do. God, I need Your help. There’s no hope without You.”

Reading Excursions – Review

“This is the first book I’ve read by author Robin Lee Hatcher. And, it is a wonderful, sweet, darling, inspirational, and beautifully written story for the most part. The short chapters make it an extremely quick read. . .

The biggest message I loved from this book was in practicing grace when dealing with family and friends when it comes to conflicts and reconciliation.

Readers of the previous books in the series as well as fans of the author will more than likely enjoy this story.”

I’m Into Books – Spotlight

Peaceful Pastime – Review

How Sweet It Is the third book in the Legacy of Faith Series by Ms. Hatcher and I will say that it truly is a sweet, endearing novel. I absolutely adore a dual timeline and the author certainly had me engaged in the family saga from start to finish. . . . I thought this book was beautifully crafted with charming characters and one that will make you cry at times and one that will stay with you after you have finished reading it.”

When Jed‘s father, the controlling member of the board of directors, temporarily suspends operations until his sons work out their differences, Jed resentfully chases his brother, Chris, to Boise. There Jed rents a basement apartment from Holly and hopes to convince Chris to get his act together before their company collapses.

Unaware that Holly is the one person who can help him get through to Chris, Jed starts the tough work of reconciliation armed with little more than a few family photographs, a stack of old letters, and a Bible that belonged to his great-grandfather, Andrew Henning. Launch – Author Interview

What do you hope readers will take with them after they’ve read it?

My main hope for my readers is that they will feel whole and refreshed after reading Healing Their Hearts. It isn’t just a fluffy story because it does deal with fostering a child, possibly past secrets, and family struggles, but it is a light read because I love including humor, faith, and fun into my novels.

With his back pressed snug up against the wall in the narrow hallway, Mark knocked on the door. “Lainee? I need you to respond to me. I won’t hurt you, I promise. My name is Mark. Remember me? Can you say something for me?”

The three-year-old remained silent. Mark tipped his head back against the ramshackle wall and sent up a silent prayer. So far, he wasn’t getting anywhere, and they’d arrived on the scene well over an hour ago.

A neighbor had reported that Steve was being belligerent, and Brenda had been spotted with a fresh purchase of booze. Though both had denied it, the last straw had been drawn, and that was the end of it.

Remembrancy – Review

“…at its heart, this book is about family—the family you’re born with and the one who surrounds you when you marry and the ones you work and live the day in and day out with.

Overall, this sweet read is one that left me feeling happy and hopeful and there’s plenty of potential for more to come with the residents of Believe.”

Britt Reads Fiction – Excerpt

“Believe’s biggest weekend is upon us, ya’ll,” Noah declared, gesturing to the normal amount of traffic on Main Street. “As you can see by all this traffic.”

Liam paused with his paint roller dangling off the ground, squinting into the early morning sun. “You do realize it’s just you and me listening, right? Also, quit yakking and start brushing. This needs to dry sooner than later.”

“Maybe you should’ve painted the giant red BerryPepper smack dab in the middle of Main Street a little sooner than the Friday of BerryPepper days.”

Hallie Reads – Excerpt

“I’d like to be able to talk to all five of you, but this will do for now. First of all, as your father, I’m proud of all of you. Liam, you impress me every single day with your bravery and loyalty to both your family and your job. You work hard to support your wife and children, and I’m proud of you for it. To my youngest sons, I’m impressed by your drive and devotion to this ranch. It’s not a small undertaking. Luke, I’ve seen you come a long way in the past year, and I have no doubt that you’ll be a wonderful father come September. I can see how happy you make your wife, and that’s all the indication I need to know how loved your daughter will be. Noah, you’ve had a lot thrown at you these past months—a little bad with a lot of good. You’re a hardworking young man, and you’re going to be a fine husband. All I’m saying is that I’m proud of you. All of you.”

“Aw, Dad.” Noah offered a goofy grin. “Who knew Allen McKay was such a softie?”

“Your mother,” Dad teased. “Why do you think she married me?”

It was evenings like this that made Emma wish Liam had a different career of choice. Yes, he was safe at home and they were safe up here at the river, but she longed for her husband to be here enjoying the weekend at the river. Playing cards, sitting around the campfire, going for a family pontoon ride at sunset.

But then her thoughts would rationalize because she knew how much he loved his police work. And even with lonely hours, she would never truly wish for him to work elsewhere.

Emma quietly eased out of the bed she was sharing with Ava, grabbed her phone and a blanket, and slipped out of the trailer into the cool evening air. The breeze had died down to nothing and locusts and crickets created an ambience of night sounds as Emma tiptoed down to the pontoon, the flood light illuminating her way.

“If you’re looking for a sweet story that makes you smile, and brings hope, then this is the book for you. All the characters are relatable, and I felt as if I could become friends with any of them. Even the town itself was one I could find myself either visiting, or possibly even living there!”

Eva didn’t reply, her gaze falling to her coffee mug. She couldn’t really talk, because it was rare that she let people in. Even simply talking to Mark was way outside of her comfort zone.

“I’m sorry if I—”

“What? No.” She bit her lip. “I just don’t really—I’m not accustomed to people, um, caring about me. Not that you, you know, care about me. I mean—that doesn’t…” She finally stammered to a stop, her cheeks hot.

A hand on hers made her look up. “I do care about you, Eva, contrary to what you might think,” he said softly. “So does everybody in this town, whether you’ve been here forever or not. And to prove just how much, may I ask you out for supper Saturday night?”

Splashes of Joy – Review

“I really did enjoy this sweet family story. And I love and appreciate the [way] this author weaves the Christian life and faith into her characters. The wedding scene was so sweet it brought tears, and it was just a joy to read a book like this about family. If you love a sweet family story set in a neat little town, this is one you need to read.”

Heidi Reads… – Excerpt

“You like her.” Sam pointed her spoon at him. “You like Evangeline!”

He let his shirt fall into place and crossed to the freezer. “You’re off duty and it’s past your bedtime. Stop throwing accusations around.”

“Mark Bryant MacLaughlin, you’re in denial.” Sam shut the freezer door before he could grab his ice cream. “Admit it. You. Like. Evangeline. Taylor!”

“Could you not yell in my face?” Using his height to his advantage, he blocked her with his shoulders, then grabbed the butter pecan gelato. “I didn’t say I like her, and I haven’t given you cause to think that. Now, if you could excuse me, I’d like to enjoy my ice cream before work.”

Healing Their Hearts is a light, gentle read that follows 4 main characters through the ups and downs of daily life in a small Nebraska town. . . . The theme of family – the circle you’re born into & the circle you intentionally gather around you – is sweetly presented, with a maturity beyond the author’s years. This is the kind of book that leaves you with hope in humanity and confidence in the grace of God, as well as a smile on your face and in your heart.”

Healing their Hearts is a story full of friendships, family, and more. Liam and Emma was an amazing couple. . . . I loved all the children in the book. . . also a lot of surprises with Eva’s family.”

“Good.” Mark set his things down and took the bait from Lainee. “Okay, Lainee, can you wait for a second while I help Eva bait her hook?”

“That be ’kay.” Lainee pointed to a white butterfly. “Fly!”

“Pretty butterfly, huh?” Eva asked. “Just as pretty as Lainee.”

Lainee giggled and squatted down to examine a rock several feet back from the creekbank. Mark kept his eye on her as he tied a hook onto Eva’s fishing line, then opened the container of bait from the gas station.

“Under normal circumstances, I would require you to bait your own hook,” he told Eva. “That was Dad’s rule growing up—for boys and girls. But because of your wrist, I’ll make an exception.”

“Miss Taylor.”

Eva spun around, swallowing when she looked up into the face of Mark MacLaughlin. “Hey.”

Really? That’s all you can say?

The corners of his gray-blue eyes crinkled, and he slipped his capable hands into the pockets of his slacks. “I was hoping I’d see you here today.”

“You were?” she squeaked. This time she didn’t even bother to chastise herself. She was working hard enough trying to keep the flush out of her face.

“I enjoyed reading this story with all the friendships and love. I like the town of Believe. The community is close and I love the way they have faith.

The characters are many and each on is well-developed and easy to love. It is also easy to feel their emotions. . . . I highly recommend this book to all who enjoy good romance and friendships.”

I don’t know how I’m going to do it, bro.” Luke dropped his forehead against the window. “Katie is going to be a tiny little human and I’m supposed to, well, basically prevent her from dying?”

Liam’s brow furrowed and he leaned around the cab of his truck. “Where did that come from?”

“Liam, it’s, what? June eleventh? That means we’re about three and a half months from Rae’s due date. What if I fail?” His face paled. “Would you charge me with murder?”

“Nope. I’d have Cam do it.”

Luke threw a sponge at him. “That’s not funny!”

A WHISKERED PERSPECTIVE

M.G. Spear

Fiction

Meet the cutest new black kitty in fiction, Pumpkin!

Like cats? Relationships? Then A Whiskered Perspective is for you.

Relationships are hard, but they are worth the effort. You should try your best, no matter what, to work things out, right? Not always.

Miller thinks she has found love but her cat, Pumpkin, tells a darker story. Not all love is equal, even if you desperately want it to be.

It’s a different take on relationship turmoil and the power of a connection between a cat and his human.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Being a cat lover, I wanted to see what this story was about. I like the story from the beginning as the woman rescues Pumpkin the cat and they developed a unique relationship. This story is different as the entire story is told from the cat’s point if view. I found this interesting, just wondering if this is what cats really think! The only thing I did find a little weird is some if the human things this cat did. This threw me off with the story, and I would have liked it to stay with what a cat really is like? Maybe I’m being too picky but this is just my opinion.

I was surprised at the darker side of this story, after the woman meets Rob. According the Pumpkin, the relationship isn’t going as well, and the cat tells what is happening through cat eyes! Over all this is just an ok story for me. I like the cat and women’s character.  I enjoyed seeing their relationship develop, but it seems there is too much going on in the story for it to be such a short one. For me there wasn’t enough time to really get into the story to Hash out the different issues. But as for cat stories, if you love a good one, this is a story you will enjoy much. Pumpkin was a cute cat!

Have you ever been set on fire?

I have.

Tied up, thrown into a bag, the smell of gasoline filling my nostrils…

Such is the way of the warrior.

I had been minding my own business, hunting mice for dinner when the neighborhood bully caught me by surprise with a pillowcase.

The local humans would whisper I was the trouble tom, always picking fights with their house cats, or spraying on their fence line.

And, of course, attacking the neighborhood bully when he threw rocks at me.

Now he had the advantage. My sharp claws could only do so much damage through the fabric, and he grabbed my legs and tied them so my claws would no longer be an issue. I yowled and spat and hissed with the rage of fire but to no avail. The way of the warrior is to accept death, but this was my seventh life, and I was not ready to give it up. But I could see no way I would survive as the pillowcase caught fire.

“Hey!” a woman screamed.

I heard the bully run away laughing as my flesh started to sear. The pain was building, and even with meditation techniques, I could not get my mind far enough from the pain.

Then my miracle came. Someone doused the pillowcase in water. Cold, blessed water.

The ropes came off and the makeshift sack was opened. Delirious as I was, I knew not to struggle as this random woman, this passerby, scooped me up in her arms and carried me down the street. She took me into her house and tended my wounds while I lay panting, grateful to be alive.

Weeks go by, and I continued to heal and snuggle with this woman. I made sure to do nothing to upset her, to throw me away, and only sprayed in the litter box and did my business there. She was grateful for this kindness and cleaned it every day for me.

Her house was a small three-bedroom house. She lived alone, a teacher educating other people’s children but coming home to no one. I was the answer to her loneliness. She talked to me every day about the goings-on in her life. She kept a diary, which I read from time to time. We were grateful for each other.

This is the story of my friend and me.

About

When asked what he does for a living . . .

Commander Mark Bishop is deliberately low-key: “I’m in the Navy.” But commanding the ballistic missile submarine USS Nevada, keeping her crew trained and alert during ninety-day submerged patrols, and being prepared to launch weapons on valid presidential orders, carries a burden of command like few other jobs in the military. Mark Bishop is a man who accepts that responsibility, and handles it well. And at a time when tensions are escalating around the Pacific Rim, the Navy is glad to have him.

Mark wants someone to come home to after sea patrols. The woman he has in mind is young, with a lovely smile, and very smart. She’s a civilian, yet she understands the U.S. Navy culture. And he has a strong sense that life with her would never be boring. But she may be too deep in her work to see the potential in a relationship with him.

Gina Gray would love to be married. She has always envisioned her life that way. A breakup she didn’t see coming, though, has her focusing all her attention on what she does best–ocean science research. She’s on the cusp of a major breakthrough, and she needs Mark Bishop’s perspective and help. Because what she told the Navy she’s figured out is only the beginning. If she’s right, submarine warfare is about to enter a new and dangerous chapter.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I have never read a book about submarines so I was really glad to get this one to read. And I love, love Dee Henderson’s books, all of them to date, so I knew this has to be an awesome read. And for me it was. I loved reading all of the technical stuff she so expertly added to her story. Reading a few reviews, I understand a lot if people didn’t care for the detailed info, but that is just Dee Henderson at her best. I will admit, I went back and read some if the scenes again, or some more than twice, but I still found it so interesting and intriguing. And I am so happy for all of the submarine talk to learning about them. It is a new topic for me and I really enjoyed it all.

The characters were well and perfectly created, and their development throughout the story was amazing. I love Gina, and Mark too! And was glad he was there for Gina. He was just the right person to give her the stability she needed. Gina was a genius, and I loved her part in the story and loved how the author shows that even though a genius person like Gina has everyday struggles just as the rest of us. Ms. Henderson does an amazing job weaving this into the story. And as for Gina and Mark’s attraction to each other, I love the romance!! Romantic and suspenseful! This makes for a story that will stay with you for a while.

If suspense and thrills are what you are looking for in a book, check this one out. I know it’s been out for a few years but it’s still the amazing book it was when released!

About

When Her Friend Goes Missing,
Every Minute Counts

Darcy St. James returns to Alaska to join a journalist friend undercover on the trail of a big story. But when Darcy arrives, she finds her friend has disappeared. Troubled by the cruise ship’s vague explanation, Darcy uses her cover as a travel reporter to investigate further.

The last person Gage McKenna expects to see during his summer aboard a cruise ship leading adventure excursions is Darcy. And in typical Darcy fashion, she’s digging up more trouble.

He’d love to just forget her–but something won’t let him. And he can’t help but worry about her as they are heading into more remote regions of Alaska and eventually into foreign waters. Something sinister is going on, and the deeper they push, the more Gage fears they’ve only discovered the tip of the iceberg.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

The McKenna family is back again with an amazing third book in the Alaskan Courage Series. And as usually, this book is filled with a lot of danger and fear, tension and drama, and we can’t forget about the heartwarming romance. If you read the first two books in this series, Gage and Darcy is not new to you, but finally, this is their story. I really like Gage, and hurt for him as he suffered the loss of his infant son. The tiny footprints he has tattooed so close to his heart is enough to break anyone’s heart. I enjoyed this book much more than Book two in the series, the main characters and storyline were much more realist and believable. But all in all, this is a wonderful series to read. And I just found out there will be a Forth book in this series, Yipeeee… Anyone loving Contemporary ficiton will fall in love with this book and its characters. I really encourage you to pick up a copy of Stranded, and while you are at it, check out Shattered and Submerged, and watch for the forth book in this series coming soon. Each book can be read as a stand-alone, but they are much more interesting when you read the tree in the order that they are written!

I received this book from the publisher Bethany House to read and review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 55.

Unforeseeable by Nancy Mehl

About

Callie Hoffman has a good life in Kingdom, Kansas. She’s engaged to Levi Housler, the new pastor of Kingdom Mennonite Church, and she spends her days working with Lizzie Housler, her friend and soon-to-be sister-in-law, at the town cafe.

When a body is discovered on the road outside Kingdom and the deceased turns out to be the victim of a serial killer, the new county sheriff begins questioning Kingdom residents. Unsettled at the prospect of a killer in Kingdom, Callie is desperate to find answers for herself, especially when her own fiance seems to know more about the murder than he’s telling.

As the town battles an entirely unforeseen danger and Callie’s very life is threatened, the stakes are as high as they’ve ever been and the people of Kingdom must learn anew to put their trust in God alone.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Unforseeable is the third trip back to the little Mennonite town of Kingdom, Kansas where Levi is the pastor and his fiancee Callie Hoffman lives in the small town as well. Usually a quiet little town, a body is found on the road just outside Kingdom and the town’s residents are being questioned. Could the killer be living among them?

I love this series so much and hate to see its ending. I fell in love with these characters as well as their town of Kingdom. As the sherriff and others in the community tries to find the murderer, I was in there right along with them. I love a good suspense, and this one was intense enough that it kept me biting my nails throughout as I wanted to help the sweet people of this town. I love stories I can feel a part of, and this one sure does that.

Another thing with this story is the way author Nancy Mehl weaves faith of her characters into this story, and it’s done in a most subtle way, just as we as Christian’s live our lives today. If you love a good clean suspense story where murder falls into a Mennonite community, you need to check this one out, and yes it’s been a few years since it has been released, but this book, along with the first two books in this series is just as good now as it was back then. And I hope you enjoy just as much as I did.

Book:  6 Hidden Behaviors that Destroy Families

Author: Dr. Magdalena Battles

Genre: RELIGION / Christian Living/Family & Relationships

Release Date: June 9, 2020

Families are complicated.
There is no such thing as a perfect family…or an easy family. We all make mistakes that hurt or disappoint our family members, and we’ve all been hurt or disappointed by those we love.
Within our human makeup is a deep and basic need for healthy family relationships. Family was designed to provide us with love, a feeling of belonging, a shared history, traditions, comfort, affection, quality time, feedback, learning, and a safety net. When our family fails to provide for these needs, we feel a deep sense of loss.
6 Hidden Behaviors That Destroy Families by Dr. Magdalena Battles addresses the top conflicts in extended families that cause relationships to become strained, disjointed, or broken. These hidden behaviors are: criticism, gossip, lack of inclusion, deception, refusing to accept differences, and a failure to apologize and forgive. Dr. Battles provides practical tips and solutions based on research, biblical principles, and her own observations of what has worked in families.
Most families have some dysfunction, causing pain, damage, and division. While every family has problems, what really matters is how we deal with those issues. Are we working in a way that heals and resolves problems, or are we allowing them to fester, divide, and explode, causing tremendous damage to our relationships? Families are always in a state of change, and they are a work in progress. But they can function in a way where love, support, belonging, and kindness are exemplified and practiced.
Doing nothing about our family conflicts often contributes to the problems. The healing in your family can begin with you. To have a family that is loving and supportive, you need to be part of the solutions and healing. You just have to take those first steps! It is a process, but the result will be happier lives and more fulfilling relationships.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

6 Hidden Behaviors that Destroy Families is a book that every single person should read. Whether you are from a dysfunctional family, or a family that seems to get along pretty well, one of these 6 things are lurking around to cause trouble and heartbreaks in families.

In each of the 6 sections in the book, the author explains in simple terms how to identify the problem, what it involves, how it affects families. And really, the way she explains how some of these things start, it made me realize I was guilty and not even realizing it. Take gossip for instance, and we have all gossiped at some time or another. But did you realize that many times it starts by saying something that really isn’t gossip, but as it progresses it crosses the line over into gossip? This is one area I am going to use the book to work on! After the author explains what the issue is, she then talks about how to change it, things to start doing to overcome these bad behaviors. And I love and appreciate that everything is Backed With Scripture. There are Questions For Reflection after each chapter as well as a Chapter Recap, all to help you understand even more.

This book is a great resource for everyone, including Pastors and teachers. What would out churches be like if everyone, including leaders had a copy if this book and used it daily? This would make an excellent Bible study, or study for a Sunday school class. I think you get the idea. In a world that is hurting every way we look, we need a book such as this to bring our families together.

More from Magdalena

While every family has its problems—some minor, some major—what really matters is how we deal with these issues. Are we working to heal and resolve the conflicts, or are we allowing them to fester, divide, and explode, perhaps causing irreparable damage to our relationships? The six hidden behaviors that destroy families are described as “hidden” because we often ignore, deny, or cover up our family issues. The family unit is a living organism, never remaining the same. Sometimes, it is healthy and working well, and other times, it is not as healthy or functional. All it takes is one person to start a trend of love, compassion, and support that can change generations to come.

Title: Falling for the Innkeeper

Author: Meghann Whistler

Publisher: Love Inspired

Release Date: July 21, 2020

Genre: Inspirational Contemporary Romance

A battle for a charming Cape Cod inn…

But what happens when romance checks in?

Single mom Laura Lessoway won’t accept her mother’s plan of selling her late grandmother’s beachfront inn without a fight. But when big-city attorney Jonathan Masters arrives to arrange an offer from his client, she’s drawn to him. And although he came to Cape Cod to close an important business deal—not fall in love—he can’t get her out of his mind.

Laura and Jonathan each try to fight their attraction and focus on business, but it’s not long before Jonathan finds himself confiding in her his other reason for coming to The Sea Glass Inn—he’s trying to find his mentally ill father, who’s recently been spotted at a nearby homeless shelter.

Working together to find Jonathan’s father only brings Laura and Jonathan closer. But with his career and her home on the line, can they ever find common ground?

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I love a Love Inspired Romance once in a while. They are short and sweet, and a really enjoyable read! So I was happy to be able to review Meghan Whistler’s debut novel, Falling for the Inn Keeper. Set in Cape Cod at the lovely and charming Cape Cod Inn, with uniquely flavored characters that adds some interesting twists to the story, I loved following Laura and Jonathan’s story, along with their supporting characters. Laura and Jonathan were about as different as anyone could be, Jonathan was in Cape Cod for business only. And Laura certainly didn’t have time for a guy in her life. But the attraction between them was hard not to see, and it was so much fun to read about.

Since this is a Romance, it’s pretty predictable what will happen, but it’s so much fun and enjoyment reading about what happens. One reviewer mentioned it’s like a Hallmark movie, and it is, you know who will fall in love, but you want to see how the characters get there. If you enjoy sweet Romance stories, I highly recommend Falling for the Inn Keeper! I just know you will enjoy it. And this is one of those books for the person who doesn’t have the time for a full novel!! Its a win win all the way!

Healing Their Hearts by Cleopatra Margot

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

Healing Their Hearts (Faith to Love, #6) By Cleopatra Margot

Christian Contemporary Romance

Paperback & ebook, 302 Pages

June 21, 2020

After spring’s many trials, Knox County Sheriff Liam McKay is ready for a season of restoration. He needs time to grieve the loss of his grandmother and work on becoming a better husband and father. Liam learned the hard way that life is fragile, and he doesn’t want to miss out on any precious moments.

Emma McKay loves her role as a wife and mother. After she lost her parents, the McKay family became her saving grace. Being married to a police officer brings both challenges and adventures into her life, though, and when something hits on a more personal level, will her past be brought into the light?

Officer Mark MacLaughlin is motivated by two things: his family and his job. Add a beautiful stranger to the mix, and Mark can’t help but want to get to know her better. But when he takes on fatherhood for a three-year-old girl, he has to learn how to blur the lines between his personal and professional life too.

Evangeline Taylor was on the way to confront her past, until her plans came to a grinding halt. Now injured and stranded in a tiny Nebraska town, Eva’s heart opens up. The town, the people, and maybe one handsome police officer in particular help her to heal…but will they be enough to make her stay?

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

This is my first story by Cleopatra Margot and I enjoyed this young author’s story. Being the 6th book in this series, it was a little confusing at first trying to get to know and figure out all of the characters. Though after a while I was ok with the characters, I think reading the other books in this series in order would help, as well as you would enjoy the full stories. I could stay in the little town of Believe, Nebraska for a good while. This is where Liam and Emma live with their children, living their everyday life. But they we not without struggles. Being a police officer, and being married to an officer has it’s own difficulties. I will say it was nice reading a book with a police officer as a character and seeing the respect everyone has for Liam.

I really did enjoy this sweet family story. And I love and appreciate the was this author weaves the Christian life and faith into her characters. The wedding scene was so sweet it brought tears, and it was just a joy to read a book like this about family. If you love a sweet family story set in a neat little town, this is one you need to read.

Book Details:

Book Title:  The Takeaway Men by Meryl Ain

Category:  Adult fiction 18 yrs +,  264 pages

Genre:  Historical Fiction

Publisher:  Sparkpress

Release date:   August 4, 2020

Book Description:

With the cloud of the Holocaust still looming over them, twin sisters Bronka and Johanna Lubinski and their parents arrive in the US from a Displaced Persons Camp. In the years after World War II, they experience the difficulties of adjusting to American culture as well as the burgeoning fear of the Cold War. Years later, the discovery of a former Nazi hiding in their community brings the Holocaust out of the shadows. As the girls get older, they start to wonder about their parents’ pasts, and they begin to demand answers. But it soon becomes clear that those memories will be more difficult and painful to uncover than they could have anticipated. Poignant and haunting, The Takeaway Men explores the impact of immigration, identity, prejudice, secrets, and lies on parents and children in mid-twentieth-century America.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

The Takeaway Men follows the Lubinski family and their lives during and many years following the Holocaust. Deciding to leave the Germany Displaced person Camp, they headed to America to restart their lives. I did enjoy the scene as the ship sails into New York Harbor and the family gets a first look at Lady Liberty. I could just imagine the awe of that sight for them.

Author Meryl Ain captures the many situations, feelings, fears, the horrible heartaches and heartbreaks the people had to face during and after the Holocaust. They lost so much, everything they had including family, friends, everything.  The authors unique details in each scene, the history on each page makes this story a wonderful read for those who enjoy stories about WWII.

The Lubinski family now lives in Queens NY, with family but they still have their own struggles, the different lifestyle in America was a real culture shock to them all. My favorite characters are the twins, it was fun watching the two as they grow up in Queens, making their own friends, even though life was still hard. There were so many questions, so many secrets, so much happening. And it is all beautifully woven together in this wonderful book that you can read for all of the answers!  If you are a WWII buff, you will love this story. And even though it is fiction, so many details here so relevant to things happening today. Grab a copy of Take Away Men today!

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Splashes of Joy The following is a guest post from the author about the publication of her new debut novel, which is this book we are featuring today. Please take time to read this interesting post. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I hope you do as well.

Guest Post for Splashes of Joy

MERCY, JUSTICE AND HUMILITY THEN AND NOW

I’m excited for the publication of my debut novel, The Takeaway Men, on August 4 and I’m so thankful for this opportunity to write a guest blog here. My characters wrestle with secrets and lies and moral dilemmas. Their decisions impact not only themselves, but also their closest relatives and friends. I hope that my book inspires readers to grapple with some of the issues raised.

The overarching theme of my book raises the question: As human beings, what is our responsibility to one another? This is a subject that has always been of particular interest to me and it is especially important at this moment in the history of our country and the world.

The heroine in my novel, Dyta/Judy/Edyta risks her life to save Jews from the Nazis during World War II.  How many people would risk danger, like she did, for someone else?

How do we – as human beings — react to evil in our world? Do we speak out when we see others in danger? How do we treat those who are different from us? Do we inconvenience ourselves to help someone else? Do we participate in unkind and uncaring behavior because everyone else is doing it? Do we stand idly by and do nothing? Or do we speak out and take action against it?

Today, our country is in the middle of a pandemic and social upheaval and all around us there is pain and heartache and hunger. We each have more than enough of our own problems. But what is the right thing to do when we see others suffering?

Certainly, health care workers have put their patients above themselves, risking their lives to treat and heal others. So have essential workers, who ensure people have enough to eat. There are courageous volunteers who risk their own health and safety to feed and clothe and comfort others.

During these trying times, I am reminded of the prophet Micah’s words. Micah mentions three things God “requires” of us: doing “justice; mercy, and walking humbly.” All three of these words require action.

I hope that readers will come away from The Takeaway Men with a renewed appreciation of the issues and dilemmas my characters experienced in the times in which they lived. Similarly, that they will look into their own hearts and act with justice, mercy and humility – towards not only their friends and neighbors, but strangers.

Author Questions and Answers

1. While the bulk of your novel is set in Queens, NY after World War II, Poland and Germany — during and immediately after the war — play an important part in the story. What made you choose to focus more on the years after the Holocaust than the period during the war?

I thought it was important to tell the story of what happened to Holocaust survivors in America in the post-war era, and also to emphasize how they were able to survive during the war and later raise families. While there are many novels about the horrors of the Holocaust, very few focus on the lives of the survivors and their children in the aftermath. I wanted to focus on the complexity of that experience. I also wanted to pay tribute to the righteous Christians, who helped to save Jews. I wanted to pose moral dilemmas and questions of faith that were, of necessity, viewed differently in the two time periods.

2. Were you surprised by any of the research you conducted as you wrote this book?

Yes, I was. For example, I found that while the Catholic Church has been criticized for not doing enough to save Jews during the Holocaust, there were many lay people of faith as well as clergy who risked their lives to save their Jewish neighbors. Poland has a very mixed history. On the one hand, the Kielce Pogrom, where an angry mob killed 42 Jews and injured 40, took place a year after the war was over. But at the same time, Poland has the most representation among The Righteous of the Nations, at Yad Vashem, the Israeli Holocaust Museum, which honors Christians who saved Jews. I was also surprised to learn that in the ‘50s, the U.S. government turned a blind eye to former Nazis, who were living in America. The country was much more concerned about the Soviet Union and pursuing Communists.

3.Who do you think should read your book?

Although it is an adult book, as a former high school teacher, I believe that high school students studying the Holocaust could read it and learn much about both the Holocaust and the post-war era in the United States. Adults who are interested in the Holocaust and the ‘50s and early ‘60s – especially baby boomers and their children – would enjoy the cultural references as well as the story. Those who are interested in themes of religious identity, sibling relationships, family, and uncovering secrets would also enjoy it. As one reviewer said: “The Takeaway Men is also a portrait of the power of love and the ability of family to embrace and heal.”

4. You mentioned that you were a high school teacher; what did you teach? Do you consider teaching or writing as your career?

I worked in the schools for many years, both as a high school history teacher and later as a school administrator. I love history and current events, and I really enjoy research. This book required many years of research. While I was working in the schools full time, I often wrote non-fiction pieces, so I considered writing a second career. But now that I am retired, writing is my full-time career. The Takeaway Men is my first novel. But I also wrote two non-fiction books in 2014 and 2016. Both The Living Memories Project: Legacies That Last and its companion, My Living Memories Project Journal, focus on helping individuals heal after losing loved ones. Interestingly, my novel is also about how a family heals. I feel blessed that I am now able to write full time and to share my work with others.

5. What’s next for you?

I’m going to be trying to spread the word about The Takeaway Men for the coming months. I am scheduled to do a number of virtual events, and I’m always happy to meet with book clubs and other groups. It looks like it’s going to be impossible to travel for the foreseeable future, so Zoom, Skype, and Facebook have become my friends. And I’ve met so many wonderful book lovers via social media. I am also toying with another novel. A number of people have asked for a sequel. I’m so gratified that they have become so invested in the characters that they want to know what happened to them. So that’s a possibility.

SPLASHES  OF JOY…Thank you so much Meryl Ain for answering these questions so we can get to know you and your writing better. We really appreciate it very much!

How Sweet It Is by Robin Lee Hatcher

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

How Sweet It Is (Lagacy of Faith, #3) By Robin Lee Hatcher Christian Contemporary Romance Paperback, Audiobook & ebook, 304 Pages July 14th 2020 by Thomas Nelson

He lost his brother. She lost her dream. Together, they might find what they’re really looking for.

Holly Stanford is doing the best she can with the restaurant she inherited from her late uncle. But after her fiancé abandons her and the business, Holly regrets having given up her dream of becoming a pastry chef. Now a few bad financial decisions might cost her everything, including her hope for the future.

Jed Henning has done well with his new company despite his prodigal brother’s behavior.

And as romance blossoms between Holly and Jed, the story of Jed’s great-grandfather highlights the power of God across the generations and the legacy of a family’s courageous faith.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

How Sweet It Is is a very sweet story! I loved getting to know Holly and Jed and watching their characters develop as the plot progressed. Both characters had complicating issues in their life and we definitely not looking for a relationship. My heart went out to Jed as he tried contacting his brother, but the way Ms. Hatcher weaves their difficult lives into the story shows us a lot about ourselves and how issues like this can happen in families. It also shows Redemption through is only through our God, but again, the writing talents of Ms. Hatcher adds this in a subtle way that just fits so well with the story.

I have read many of Robin Lee Hatcher’s books and love them all, and was excited to read and review this one. There is so much in this story, twists and turns that surprise you, making it a wonderful and entertaining read. If you enjoy a good clean Christian fiction, you don’t want to miss How Sweet It Is. Because Jed and Holly’s story truly is a really sweet story.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

She Laughs is just as the Title says. When you read this book, you will laugh, and laugh, and laugh some more, because this is how this author shows each of us how to laugh through out difficult situations. And Ms. Miljavac is not without problems and hard times. And though the laughter, she tells of the difficult things in her life with such raw emotions, it causes us as readers to realize that we all go through difficulties. It’s how we handle these things that matter. I encourage you to check out this book, even if you are not going through problems at the moment, they will come. And when they do we need to know how to choose faith over our fears. It’s not easy for me, it’s a process. And She Laughs is one book I will keep in sight so I can refer to it when I need to.

This book is for everyone. Men can benefit from this as well as women. This is the first I have heard of this author but it won’t be the last book I will read by here. She is on my favorites list already! Pick up your copy today and learn to choose faith over your fears.

Launch – Note from the Author

Thank you for joining me for the Christmas in Bayberry blog tour!

I know it’s hot here in the northern hemisphere and not exactly Christmastime but… maybe that’s the best time to visit a small town in snowy Vermont. So grab a nice cold drink and curl up to take an armchair vacation in a warm, cozy town. . .

Rockin’ Book Reviews – Review

“This is truly a Christmas reading delight! . . . This tale is such a relaxing drama, enclosed within a small town full of “Christmas Spirit”. although quite predictable, it is endearing and the characters and scenes”draws one in”.”

Pause for Tales – Review

“If you are looking for a little Christmas in July, look no further than Christmas in Bayberry. And if you adore Hallmark movies, you will enjoy this story from Hallmark Publishing. . . . As Wes and Kate navigate business and their attraction to each other grows, both of their dreams become at risk. Finding out what is most important to each other made this heartwarming story a welcome read.”

Books with Bethany – Review

“This is truly the sweetest Christmas book I’ve read in quite sometime . . . Jennifer’s writing and detailed descriptions have you feeling as if you are in this small town Vermont. . . . I highly recommend this beauty to get you in the holiday spirit!”

Remembrancy – Review

“The temperature outside may be in the 90s right now, but Christmas in Bayberry put me right in the holiday mood. Though a bit predictable (but Hallmark wouldn’t be Hallmark without their signature happy endings, now would they?), it is a sweet and fun escape.”

Angel’s Guilty Pleasures – Excerpt

Wes stepped up to his boss’s very large oak desk. “Here’s the file you requested. Everything should be in there.”

“Thank you.” Mr. Summers took the folder, then gestured to the two charcoal gray chairs in front of his desk. “Take a seat.”

Wes was torn between doing what the president of the company wanted or speaking up about his pending meeting. After all, Mr. Summers had the final say on who got the promotion. Wes had to stay on the man’s good side, but he also had to get his work done.

Wes’s mouth grew dry. He swallowed hard. “Sir, I’m expected in the conference room on the twelfth floor right now.”

Mr. Summers leaned forward, resting his elbows on the large oak desk. “They can wait.” His gray brows drew together in a formidable line. “This is important.”

Splashes of Joy – Review

“This is my favorite book that I have read by Jennifer Faye. It is a Hallmark Christmas Story, so if you are a fan of Hallmark movies, you will love this one! . . . If you love sweet, cozy, snowy, small town Christmas stories, Christmas in Bayberry is a must for you! I [thoroughly] enjoyed this Christmas in July read, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, whether you read it in July, or closer to Christmas!”

I’m Into Books – Spotlight

Jorie Loves A Story – Review

“In true Hallmark Channel fashion, this is a story which has an HEA and a homey afterglow – where you know that for the towne of Bayberry, nothing is ever impossible until you reach the point where you cannot believe in the small miracles which evoke the most change in your life.”

Cover Lover Book Review – Review

“In the classic Hallmark style, Christmas in Bayberry is a swoony, feel-good, cozy read. And Bayberry, Vermont is the pinnacle setting to tug me into the Christmas (in July) mood. . . . “I have read several books penned by Jennifer Faye and this was my favorite so far, The idyllic setting of Bayberry, Vermont, the close knit community and their Christmas festivities brought the story to life before my eyes. . . . I thought this was a fantastic book that is suitable for all ages and would make a perfect Christmas gift for the reader in your life. It flows at a great pace, it held my interest throughout . . .”

Reviewingbooksplusmore – Review

“I enjoyed this book so much. I can definitely see it as a Hallmark Christmas Movie. . . . A story I enjoyed reading as a Christmas in July book. I definitely recommend reading this book.”

E-Romance News – Excerpt

“Bayberry Candle Company” was printed across the top of each sheet. The breath caught in her throat. This was it—the evaluation of the company.

Kate knew she shouldn’t look, but it was like watching a train accident: You just couldn’t turn away. As she assembled the pages in numeric order, she noticed on the next-to-last sheet a header that read: “Conclusions.”

Her heart clenched. She stared at the words.

Please let it be a vote to keep the business operating.

Please. Please. Please.

Her gaze skimmed down the page. And then it stopped.

Reading Is My SuperPower – Review

“Jennifer Faye captures the small town charm of a Hallmark movie and weaves it into a sweet romance with a nod to Christmas miracles. Well-written & entertaining, the story also balances Hallmark’s comforting predictability with a couple twists & turns that may still surprise you. The characters are warm & likable and you’ll want to book a trip of your own to the quaint town of Bayberry!”

Reading Excursions – Review

“It’s beautiful, moving, and so heartwarming. . . . It was an absolutely delightful read. The small town “every one works there or knows someone who does” plot line was perfection. . . . I highly recommend this sweet book for those who LOVE clean, feel good, small-town Christmas romances. Fans of Hallmark movies will more than likely love this story. And, I’m pretty certain fans of the author will be delighted as well.”

Ponderings from the Inglenook – Review

“Immediately upon opening the pages of this book, I was transported to snowy, small towns, twinkling fairy lights and hot chocolate curled up by the fireplace. This is my first book by Jennifer Faye, but it won’t be my last. I thoroughly enjoyed this cozy Christmasy read.”

Harlie’s Books – Review

“. . . I was totally invested in the town, Kate and Wes but also in the story. Ms. Faye is an excellent storyteller and takes her time here. It’s in-depth, romantic, heartwarming, and just overall a great book to read now in the heat of the summer. . . Do yourself a favor and start reading Ms. Faye. Especially this book. Her Surprise Engagement by Cari Lynn Webb Grand Finale

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

We hope you enjoyed the tour! If you missed any of the stops
you’ll find snippets, as well as the link to each full post, below:

Launch – Note from the Author

Welcome to my blog tour with Prism!

I’m thrilled to be celebrating the release of my new book, Her Surprise Engagement, in my series City by the Bay Stories with Harlequin Heartwarming. Her Surprise Engagement is a sweet contemporary romance that brings together single mom, Nichole Moore and football star, Chase Jacobs. . .

Hallie Reads – Review

Her Surprise Engagement is just such a delight to read. A sports romance with a fake relationship and friends-to-more… It all works so well together, especially with Nichole and Chase as the lovable couple at the center of it. Their personalities may be opposite in several ways, but their chemistry is undeniable. I easily enjoyed this romance.”

Remembrancy – Review

“I was drawn into this story from the get-go because it was both fun and heartwarming. . . . Add in both Nicole’s and Chase’s families and Cari Lynn Webb has delivered a sweet, sometimes humorous, and all-around enjoyable story.”

Hearts & Scribbles – Excerpt

He held out his hand. “Do we have a deal then?”

She set her hand in his. “We’re in a business arrangement.”

“We’ve been friends too long to ink our fake marriage with a handshake.” And because he’d always been a risk-taker, he stood and pulled her toward him. “Let’s seal the deal correctly?”

“Webb places you into her storyline rather immediately – you instantly know what is mot important to the lives of her characters simply by observing where we’re meeting them in the text. Nichole and Chase have rather immediate needs at the start of this novel which allows the story to unfold at a quicker pace than others. I enjoyed seeing how Webb was going to heal the distance between them but also, tuck closer to whom they’ve become whilst they’ve been apart. . . this is a story that is anchoured by a resolve of unquestioning trust between two best friends who understand each other better than they understand themselves.”

Pause for Tales – Review

“What a super cute and romantic read this one was. Marriage of convenience stories are my favorite trope, and this one was pretty close. . . . I really enjoyed this sweet little story that left me smiling all the way to the end.”

Wishful Endings – Excerpt

“I like Nichole.” Nonna adjusted the colander in the sink and nodded at Chase to empty the pot. “I like her a lot.”

“I like Nichole too.” And he did. More than he wanted to admit.

“You can’t treat her like the others, Chase.” Nonna picked up the potato ricer and handed it to Chase. “Her heart is good. She’s not used to your lifestyle.”

“What others?” Chase grabbed another mixing bowl and the potato ricer. He’d dated other women. Nothing serious. Nothing lasting. He wouldn’t have asked any of his past girlfriends to act as his pretend wife. One would’ve misinterpreted the pretend part. Two would’ve reminded him that marriage wasn’t part of their five-or ten-year career plans.

“Oh my goodness. I immediately sighed internally after reading the last few pages of this book and I think my eyes literally turned into hearts. These two are beyond words! This book was such a sweet, adorable mix of fake relationship and friends to lovers, which are two of my favorite romance tropes. It was a match made in heaven. The chemistry between Chase and Nichole was off the charts and crazy cute!”

“This friends-to-more / fake marriage story has some super swoony kisses, sweet moments & great characters. The author draws you into the story right away & keeps your attention until the end – and you’ll be rooting for Chase & Nicole’s fake relationship to become real. A cute weekend read you’ll enjoy!”

“Nichole has a son that makes the book enjoyable. I love how they do things together with her son. . . . Her Surprise Engagement has a lot of family and friends. I loved all the different relationships.”

Splashes of Joy – Review

“Chase and Nicole are wonderful characters. I love the way their lives intertwine and I really loved following their journey of their fake marriage. . . . There is a lot going on in this story, twists and turns weaved throughout that make the story well worth your read.

I have read a number of Cari Lynn Webb’s books and have enjoyed them all, and this one is no different. I love reading the sweet Heartwarming romances from Harlequin . . .”

He stepped closer to her. “Let’s make a deal.”

Deal? Nichole moved toward him and tipped her head to lock her gaze on his. The last deal she’d made with Chase had her married to him. How much worse could it get? “What do you have in mind?”

“You make your food.” He grimaced and recovered. His gaze warmed and searched her face. “I’ll make my version and we see which one everyone prefers.”

“What are you making exactly?” Nichole eyed him. He reached forward, brushed her hair off her shoulder. His touch light and swift. But the effect left her restless and wishful. She cleared her throat. “It has to be healthy, no ice cream or brownies to sway the vote.” No more tugs on her heart to sway her resolve.

“This story had a lot of fun tropes within it: friends to more, second chance romance, fake marriage, and one of the characters was a famous sports figure. . . . It was enjoyable to watch as their fake relationship turned to more.”

Peaceful Pastime – Review

Her Surprise Engagement is a fun and super cute read that kept me entertained throughout the entire novel. . . . I got to know the characters and felt like I was part of everything that was going on in their lives.  This is part of a series but can be read as a standalone. If any reader is looking for a truly heartwarming novel than I recommend this one.”

Nichole gathered the extra clothing they hadn’t used for their snowmen.

Chase picked up a scarf, shook off the snow and set it gently on the pile she held. He asked, “Want some help with lunch?”

She wanted help remembering their kiss had been a mistake. She wanted help putting a wedge between him and her son. She wanted help reminding herself this was all pretend. “We’ve got it. Don’t you want to go explore with the boys?”

He tugged her hat over her forehead. “We never talked about that kiss. Or our options.”

“I’ve read every book in the series and this is my favorite.  I don’t try to play favorites but I just loved Chase and Nichole.  For me, the book had a great storyline, perfect pacing, the situations that they went through, and let’s not forget that this one is hilarious.  Ms. Webb has really written a well-thought-out, pitch-perfect story about two people that were childhood friends that reconnect in the most hilarious situation.”

“Oh how I love friends-to-more sweet romances. And this one fits the bill perfectly. I was drawn in from the first lines, because it let me know, right off, what kind of story I was getting into. Good, clean romance. . . . this story is enjoyable, flows well,  and has excellent character development. . . . This is a charming friends-to-more romance that gives you sighs and smiles throughout.”

“The novel is a perfect read for readers who like a cozy romantic read. I thought the characters were well developed and likable. I felt that Nichole shouldn’t have lied to her son about her relationship with Chase. Thankfully, since this a heartwarming romance novels, things have a way of working out for the best.”

“I want to protect him.” From Chase. From getting hurt. From suffering. And she wanted to protect herself. But she worried she might already be too late.

Her grandmother shuffled back to the stove. “Sometimes the best we can do is love them with all we’ve got.”

“And when they get hurt?” Nichole picked up the salad bowl.

“We love them that much harder.”

Nichole clutched the stainless steel bowl against her stomach. “Is that enough?”

“Love is always enough.” Her grandmother smiled and tipped her head toward the wide windows.

Reading Excursions – Review

“I loved the message of seeing beyond appearances, as well as loving harder, and love is always enough in this sweet, feel-good read. Webb clearly knows how to write a story that touches on what we all want from life – whether it be a career or family, even a second chance.”

He sat on the couch beside his grandmother and checked his phone again.

“Something more important on your phone than your family?” Nonna dabbed a napkin against her cheek.

“I’m waiting to hear from Nichole.” Chase flipped his phone over in his hands. Had Nichole changed her mind about car pool pickup? About their deal? “This wasn’t the way it was supposed to go.”

Nonna placed her hand on his arm, drawing his gaze to her wisdom-aged whiskey-brown eyes. “We can plan all we want, but love has its own mind and its own agenda.”

“Her Surprise Engagement was another great read by Cari Lynn Webb. I have read and enjoyed her books in the past and this one is probably among one of my favorites by her. I loved the chemistry between Nichole and Chase. . . . I am giving Her Surprise Engagement a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend this for readers who enjoy sports romance.”
