MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I don’t read a lot of fantasy, but I did find this one enjoyable. Jack Gregson & the Forgotten Portals is written for tweens and teens and I can see this age loving this book. The main character’s are 11 to 13. The three found an old magic book in an old family home that takes them on a journey that takes them on a whirlwind of fantasy that will take fantasy lovers on a journey they won’t forget.

Peter Wilson does a really nice job of writing this book. The characters are realistic and develop well as the story unfolds. The detailed scenes will keep readers involved in the story so much so its hard to put the book down. The many twists and turns will throw you off guard making it difficult to figure out what is happening next. I’m giving this one Four Stars. If you enjoy a good clean fantasy, this one is a must for you. I encourage you to check this book out for hours of enjoyable entertainment.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Today, I am reviewing another C.S. MCDONALD Cozy Mystery Matrimony. Mayhem and Murder, book Ten of A Fiona Quinn Mystery. I haven’t read these mysteries in order, and you don’t need to. Each of these stories stands on its own. I love Fiona and Nathan and was excited to finally read about their wedding, but in true Fiona and Nathan way of life, this wedding was anything but perfect. If it can go wrong in a wedding, it did in this one. And wouldn’t you know, there would have to be a murder involved so the wedding couple would have an investigation to do. But did it have to be the wedding planner? And what are Russians doing here? All of this is happening at the same time Fiona is finally going to meet Nathan’s mom Rita.

I had so much fun reading this book, with characters smart enough to investigate murders yet hilarious enough that had me giggling throughout the story. This is a whirlwind of a story with so much happening, and so many twists and turns it will have your head spinning. McDonald does another amazing job of writing a cozy mystery that will have you turning the pages fast as you try to figure out what is happening. And no sweat over this being the tenth book in the series; it is just as good if not better than the first book! If you love a good cozy mystery, I encourage you to read Matrimony, Mayhem, and Murder and any other book by C.S. McDonald.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Peccadillo at the Palace is such a fun book to listen to. Author Kari Bovée takes readers on a trip to England to see the Queen. These are super characters that will stay with me for a while. I have enjoyed this series so much. It’s nice to go back in time to read about someone I didn’t know anything about. Bobeé does a fantastic job of weaving the real life facts with the fictional parts to bring he readers amazing books to read.

Susanna Burney does a wonderful job with the narration. Her voice was clear and pleasant to listen to. I like the way she changes her voice for each character. That’s not an easy task to do. This book

Raised in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., she now resides in Charlotte, North Carolina, but her heart belongs to Virginia.

She holds a degree in Psychology from George Mason University and Paralegal Studies Certification from Duke University.

She shares her life with her real-life hero and number one supporter. Their relationship grew on the golf course, and now they have one in their backyard.

Jill believes in enjoying every moment of this journey because God has everything under control.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Luke was home after an injury, and he walked into the B and B to find that his old flame had taken over; she now has triplets. But did she have a husband? Would this have an effect on his coming back to his hometown? Searching for Home by Jill Weatherholt is a Love Inspired sweet story of forgiveness and second chances. I loved the flawed characters and the way they developed and wanted to better themselves as the story unfolds. There was some harsh baggage that had to be dealt with, a lot of emotions flying around. But isn’t that like real life? This story is so realistic. These characters are so realistic. And those twins stole my heart. You need to read this one. I’m giving this Five Stars, and you will understand why when you read this one!A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

More from Jill

It happened in slow motion.

I was traveling on the interstate at 65 mph, in the far-left lane. The traffic was heavy but moving.

Then the unthinkable happened. A wheelbarrow fell off the back of a pickup truck in front of my car.

Swerving to my right lane wasn’t an option, it was full of cars. The left shoulder was narrow and led to a steep drop off.

I gripped the wheel and had a split second to weigh my options. If I maintained my course, the wheelbarrow would burst through my windshield. If I went to the right, I could cause a multi-car pileup. There was a tractor trailer close behind me, so I couldn’t hit my brakes.

I prepared myself for the worst. Then I prayed to God to help me.

Moments later, when I was safely off the interstate, I burst into tears. I was still alive. No one was injured. But how? I couldn’t recall how I got to the exit ramp. How was I able to guide my car around the wheelbarrow?

Later, I realized that God was truly in control of my life. Growing up in the church and listening to my grandmother, I had always known God loved me. But that day, I felt His love more than I ever had my life. He wanted me to live. But why?

I’d like to think that He wasn’t quite finished with me. That maybe He had better things in store for me. Perhaps He blessed me with a gift to weave together a story that can give a person hope. A story that can bring a little light into what is sometimes a dark and scary world. After all, I didn’t grow up wanting to be a writer. Like that day on the interstate, it’s all God’s goodness.

GIVEAWAY Crown of the Warrior King By Henry O. Arnold

crown of the warrior king

About the Book

Book: Crown of the Warrior King

Author: Henry O. Arnold

Genre: Biblical Fiction

Release date: December 1, 2021

perf6.000x9.000.indd

The desire of Israel…

the first to wear the crown is the warrior king

For decades the nation of Israel had no rest from her enemies. The people cried out, “Give us a king to lead us, to go out before us, to fight our battles.” And Yahweh hears the cries of the chosen. He plucks a king out of the tribe of Benjamin, the smallest of the tribes—Saul, son of a herdsman. The prophet Samuel anoints him as Israel’s first warrior king.

Under the banner of the wolf, the symbol of his tribe, Saul rises to prominence, winning the hearts and minds of the people of Israel with his success on the battlefield and benevolent leadership.

But when the nation of Israel cries out, “For the love of Israel. For the glory of Yahweh. For the honor of the king,” the praises of the people turn the humble heart of the warrior king into one filled with pride—a pride that has fatal consequences.

In this tale of triumph and tribulation, deepest love and burning rivalries, the new epoch is given a voice…and it is a Song of Prophets and Kings.

AND NOW AN INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

1.  How much of your personality goes into your stories?

Every aspect of my personality infuses these stories and characters. I am fully human, and so I am challenged to express those qualities in all character’s: male and female, good and bad, honorable and dishonorable. I want the reader to see themselves in these characters and stories and to be true to that, I must be honest and reveal about myself and how I personally relate to these people.

2.  Do you enjoying writing stand-alone stories or series? And Why?

I love the series because it allows me the freedom to “run a marathon” in the literary sense. Trust me, I’m not a marathon runner in the literal sense. I always knew The Song of Prophets and Kings would be written as a series. This choice can be problematic because while the author and publisher want to see a successful book, there is no guarantee. You hope that the readership will be there in the initial launch of that first volume, and you really hope that as the author, you have captured the imagination and the heart of the reader, and that they will continue throughout the journey of each successive volume.

3.  Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?

This is a great question. I feel I get hijacked all the time by my characters. That is why I have learned to hold on to my characters with a very light touch. This is a big part of the joy of writing stories. I must pay close attention to the details of the scene and what choices the characters need to make or thoughts/words they much convey.

I believe this comes in part with my training as an actor. When doing a theatrical production, I might have an idea of what my character must do or say, but I also need to pay close attention to what the other characters are doing and saying, which informs me and gives me the freedom to respond. I use the same process to create my literary characters.

4.  Your favorite thing about writing?

The “aloneness” of it. Yes, I’m also an actor and quite comfortable on stage, but I’ve discovered my introvert-self and quite like that part of my humanity.

5.  What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

It is not so much a surprise, but a hope realized. I wanted to go deeper in the biblical context of these stories, not just to learn the culture of ancient Israel and the other nations, but to see the deep connection between God and creation. More specifically, the redemptive aspect of God’s relationship to Israel and for the rest of humanity. I love imagining how important it was say, for Samuel to write down and protect the ancient scrolls that recorded the history of Israel to that point. He saw it as something that must be preserved and protected. We are beneficiaries of his and all the biblical writers’ efforts to record and preserve God’s Word.

6.  If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?

You are not as smart or talented as you think you are.

7.  If you had one piece of advice for new writers, what would it be?

Read. Read. Read. Look. Look. Look. Write. Write. Write.

More from Henry

After the golden age of theatre in the Greek and Roman times, the theatre went dark, very dark as in Dark Ages, and for centuries it was thus. But it was the church that brought the theatre back to life by staging passion plays on biblical subjects. Since most people could not read at the time, it was a great way to tell the folks some Bible stories. The world has certainly improved its literacy skills since then. The delight I have in reading and writing stories from the Bible or on biblical themes has been with me for a long time.

When I formulated the concept of retelling the stories of the first three kings of Israel and matching them with the leading prophets of that age, the title of the series, The Song of Prophets and Kings, was a perfect match for the biblical/historical fiction genre. The first volume in this series, A Voice Within the Flame, was released last year and features the life of the prophet Samuel up to and including the anointing and coronation of Saul as the first king of Israel. Now it is time for the second volume, Crown of the Warrior King. This second novel picks up where the last one left off.

Whether the reader or listener is familiar with the biblical stories or not, I have written these novels in such a way that makes these ancient stories come to life in the modern world. When the reader/listener dives into stories that are 3,000 years old, it will be surprising how we all can see ourselves in these characters.

These are biblical stories that I grew up with and have read and studied all my life. It is a joy to get to share them with you in this series, The Song of Prophets and Kings.

Blitz and Giveaway for The Order of Time Series

GENRE: Middle Grade Fantasy  (Mythology/Ancient History)

BLURB:

About the Series

Picture two twelve-year-old fraternal twins who are like night and day. She is a smart and highly organised MMA fighter. He’s not a fighter, he’s a lover of history, art and Star Wars. Despite their differences they are one formidable team. Together Anastasia and Edward Upston travel through time and navigate ancient civilisations, angry gods and mythical monsters in their quest to protect the integrity of human history.

About The Order of Time

Anastasia and Edward Upston are eleven year old twins who are different in almost every way. Despite this they are inseparable and he best of friends. They tackle the highs and lows of sixth grade together whether they are fending off bullies at the elite Blake Academy or examining rare antiquities at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Then: life gets complicated.

They discover that their friend and mentor, Dr. Gregorian, is part of a secret society called the Order of Time. It turns out that time is not fixed, it’s a fluid continuum where changes to the past can create ripples all the way through to the present. It unwittingly falls to the twins to travel back through time to ancient Egypt where they must overcome deadly assassins, evil high priests and vengeful gods in order to prevent disaster. Together Anastasia and Edward must navigate all obstacles to preserve the past and find their way back home.

About The Order of Time and Odin’s Door

The orange light bathed the snow-covered fields as the fiery globe began to dip below the horizon. It was strange that something so beautiful could signal the arrival of something so evil. One thing twelve-year-old twins Anastasia and Edward Upston knew for sure was that when mortals were caught between two bickering gods nothing good would come of it. Surviving the Viking Age may be the hardest thing they ever do, if they can…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
“Um, Anastasia, can I talk to you for a minute? Alone?” Edward asked as he grabbed his formerly sane sister by the elbow and led her away from Erik. “What in the heck are you thinking? Help them kill the dragon?”
“I said we’d help Erik try to convince Soren to leave first. We’ll only help them kill the dragon if Soren won’t listen,” his twin explained, as if it should all make sense now.
“Have you lost your mind?” Edward snapped.
“It’s a really simple plan. Don’t overthink it,” Anastasia said, looking at him like he was the one who was crazy.
“Ahem,” they heard Erik interrupt from behind them.
“I’m sorry, but we’re a little busy here at the moment,” Edward called over his shoulder at the red-haired Viking with the big sword.
“While you’re talking to the slow one, I am going to find the Jarl. He’s also fixated on getting killed by Nidhogg. Perhaps you’ll have better luck talking some sense into her,” Erik said, shaking his head dismissively.
Edward watched the big Viking follow Soren’s footprints until he disappeared into the underbrush before turning back to Anastasia. “We’re supposed to be in Strasbourg earning our entrance into the academy. We don’t even know why we’re here and you’re talking about killing dragons,” Edward whispered harshly just in case Erik was still in earshot.
“I know we’re not supposed to be here but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t help someone who needs our help,” his twin whispered back, her posture stiffening.
“You know we can’t risk changing what happens here. How many times has Dr. G told us that the ripples from any change in the past can completely change the future? That red-haired dude is Erik the Red, the man who colonizes Greenland. His son Leif Erikson was the first European to sight North America: five hundred years before Christopher Columbus. Assuming we could help kill this dragon, just imagine what changing the past related to that guy might do. Dollar bills could say In Odin we trust and we might not even exist!” Edward was no longer whispering as he threw his hands in the air in exasperation.
MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
I always enjoy cozy mysteries by C. S. McDonald and I had the privilege of listening to Mambo and Murder this week and it was so very good. As I read about the ball room dancing with Nate and Fiona I had to laugh out loud because Nate needs dance lessons, bad. Poor Fiona trying to keep her toes and limbs out of harms way. But then the dance floor wasn’t so much for dancing anymore.
Following Detective Landry and Fiona will have readers on the edge of their seats, one minute and laughing the next. I love these two characters and enjoy every book that leads to solving another mystery.
With this book, I have a gift copy of the audio version and I enjoyed listening to Maren Swenson Waxenberg as she does an amazing job reading the book. Her voice is just right for all of the characters, and she brings the book to life in a different way. If you love audiobooks, you should really try this one. I think you will find several hours of great entertainment here. This one is getting Five Stars from me.
A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
Author C.S. McDonald
Meet the Author:
For twenty-six years C.S. McDonald’s life whirled around a song and a dance. Classically trained at Pittsburgh Ballet Theater School, The Pittsburgh Dance Alloy, and many others, she became a professional dancer and choreographer. During that time, she choreographed many musicals and an opera for the Pittsburgh Savoyards. In 2011 she retired from her dance career to write. Under her real name, Cindy McDonald, she writes murder-suspense and romantic suspense novels. In 2014 she added the pen name, C.S. McDonald, to write children’s books for her grandchildren. In 2016 she added the Fiona Quinn Mysteries to that expansion. She decided to write the cozy mystery series that everyone, including teens and tweens, can read and enjoy. Presently, the Fiona Quinn Mysteries nine books with a tenth slated for 2021. The books are also available on audio, narrated by Maren Swenson Waxenberg. Cindy’s newest venture is The Owl’s Nest Mysteries. Once again, she has set her cozy mystery in Pittsburgh. The female protagonist, Alexa Owl, is much different from Fiona Quinn. The Owl’s Next Mysteries has a little grit, a little time travel, a little romance, and a whole lot of cozy! Ms. McDonald resides on her Thoroughbred farm known as Fly by Night Stables near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with her husband, Bill, and her poorly behaved Cocker Spaniel, Allister.
MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
Here in America we all have out traditions if how we celebrate our new year. Some celebrate by having big parties, restaurants around stay open so customers will have a place to party. Some churches will open their doors for people to come and have a good time praising Jesus for the new year
Some stay at home and watch the ball drop in New Yorks famous Time Square, and some don’t even do that. So this is our America on New Year’s Eve night.
Have you ever wondered how the rest of the world spends their New Year? Our Lunar New Year by Yobe Qiu starts by telling us how China and the Chinese people celebrate their new year. In this book, Yobe also tells us about other countries such as
Chinese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese and Indian children and their families honor Lunar New Year, from dragon dances in China to firecrackers.
I think this book would be wonderful in any school or daycare library. This is valuable information that our kids would love to hear. I loved hearing it myself because it’s something I did not know. MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
Shoot Like A Girl is the first book in the Annie Oakley Series by Kari Bovée. This is a mystery series based on a real, live at one time in history, lady. I have only heard the name Annie Oakley, but after reading these books I want to follow up on the real life fact of this interesting and intriguing person. Annie made her fame in being a sharp shooter in the Wild West shows. Not the best job for ladies but Annie thrived at it. The characters here are tip top and a lot of fun with some fear following their journey. I think anyone would love to know Annie.
The main reason for this review today is to let you know how I feel the audio book is, so I will do that. Susanna Burney is the narrator for the Anni Oakley series and she does a fabulous job with this book, Shoot Like A Girl Her voice is clear, nice and smooth, and I like the way she can use her voice to switch the voice of the characters. A lot of people can’t do this so well, so I appreciate that Burney can do a good job of this. If you are one who enjoys audiobooks, I encourage you to try this. You get a good Mystery to listen to with the really nice narration. This one is a Four for me.
A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
EXCERPTS (Please choose only ONE to use with your post):
Excerpt One:
JOHN
The ground shook like the end of the world.
At least, that was how it felt to John, who had never experienced an earthquake while growing up in Colorado. And they’d only lived in Maryland for a month before taking this trip to California to visit their aunt. On their second day in the steep mountains of Santa Cruz, while hiking through an old-growth redwood forest that reminded John of a fairy tale, he suddenly felt woozy. But he wasn’t sick. His legs swayed like he was dancing the hula, as if the ground beneath his feet were the roiling sea. Birds took to the sky. Their aunt’s dog, Nickel, barked and snapped at the air, her ears tucked back and tail between her legs.
“Sarah?” John looked over to his sister and held out a hand to steady himself.
She wore the same expression of bewilderment for a moment, then realization dawned across her face. “Is this an earthquake? Cool!”
Her voice rose and fell with the waves just like her knees riding the shifting earth as if it were a skateboard or a pair of skis. Dander like fireflies floated down from the trees and sparkled in the sun’s rays.
“Earthquake,” Aunt Lorraine confirmed. “Just a little one. Hold on, it’ll end in—”
The earth eased to a halt.
“There ya go, all done.” Aunt Lorraine heaved a breath. “For now.”
“For now?!” John hunched over, ready to fall flat on the ground if it got any worse.
Now That I Know You is Book 5 in the Tree of Life series, exploring and celebrating unforgettable family stories in Canyon Mines, the mountain town that invites you back again and again.
MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
Now That I Know You is only this 2nd book I have read in this series. It looks like I have some catching up to do. But this book is fine reading as a standalone. The only slip time books I connect with are the authors that can smoothly slip between historical and contemporary eras and perfectly connect the two storylines. Well, have no fear; Olivia Newport does this effortlessly. I so much enjoyed the characters from each era and enjoyed the ties between the characters.
My grandma was born in the early 1900’s so I couldn’t help wishing she were here so I could ask if her family went through similar rough times. I think Newport handles the historical parts very well, and readers can tell the amount of research she does by the vivid scenes throughout the book. I love the attention to details and development of the plot and characters as the story unfolds. Now That I Know You is Five Stars for me. I highly recommend this book to everyone! You will love it.
More from Olivia
I’ve wanted to write Now That I Know You for nearly 20 years—at least the historical story part of this split-time novel.
When my son was a freshman in high school, he joined the mock trial team, and my husband and I entered the league of parents who watched versions of the same competition over and over. The state bar association selects a case and provides every team with the same documents to study as the basis of preparing both prosecution and defense. Team members play roles of attorneys and witnesses.
That first year, the case was trying a particular individual in connection with his role in events that culminated in the 1914 “Ludlow Massacre,” which is featured in Now That I Know You. My son played a witness for the prosecution. My proudest moment was when one of the scoring judges—who are actual court judges—singled him out for his skill in recognizing and dodging the opposing counsel’s interrogation strategy. Somebody hold me in my chair, because you really are not supposed to jump and cheer at mock trial!
Since I heard the case several times, the history wormed its way into my heart and mind. The injustice and tragedy of the story weighed heavy, but so did the legacy of the events and their eventual impact on history that affects us even today. People often ask where book ideas come from. Sometimes they germinate inside me for a long time before the moment is ripe to put them on the page in the lives of characters who have grown around them. This is one of those stories.
Giveaway A Stranger’s Game by Colleen Coble
A Stranger’s Game
by Colleen Coble
January 3-14, 2022 Virtual Book Tour
This gripping new novel from USA TODAY bestselling romantic suspense author Colleen Coble will leave you on the edge of your seat until the very last page.
A wealthy hotel heiress.
Even though Torie Bergstrom hasn’t been back to Georgia since she was ten, she’s happy to arrange a job for her best friend at one of the family properties on Jekyll Island. A suspicious death. But when Torie learns that her best friend has drowned, she knows it is more than a tragic accident: Lisbeth was terrified of water and wouldn’t have gone swimming by choice. A fight for the truth. Torie goes to the hotel under an alias, desperate to find answers. When she meets Joe Abbott and his daughter rescuing baby turtles, she finds a tentative ally. The more Torie and Joe dig, the more elusive the truth seems. One thing is clear: someone will risk anything—even more murder—to keep their secrets buried.
MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
Colleen Coble’s books and she has given us another thriller in A Stranger’s Game. Jekyll Island is the scene of this breathtaking book. Torie Bergstrom has’t been to the island in ten years, but she arranged for a job for her best friend Lisabeth. Since Torie’s dad owned the resort, she could pretty much do as she pleased. But she wasn’t expecting to loose her friend so quickly and tragically. So, Torie changes her name and comes back home to find out what is happening.
Stranger’s Game is one book that will keep you guessing to the last few pages. There are many twists and turns at throw you off on the who is involved in the things going on on the island. Coble does an amazing job of keeping readers excited and wanting to keep turning the pages to see what the next message will be. And the journey goes on with characters that will steal your heart. Well most of them anyway, some of them you just couldn’t trust. The ending was just OK for me, compared to Cobles other books. It was good, just not as exciting for me. But all in all it is a fabulous read that I highly recommend. And I’m giving this one Five Stars. Go check it out!
Giveaway and Tour Elinor by Shannon McNear
Elinor
About the Book
Book: Elinor
Author: Shannon McNear
Genre: Christian/Historical/Romance
Release date: December 1, 2021
9781643529547 cover
A Journey Full of Hope…
Escape into a riveting story based on the mystery of the Lost Colony of Roanoke.
Author Shannon McNear portrays history with vivid authenticity.
In 1587, Elinor White Dare sailed from England heavy with her first child but full of hopes. Her father, a renowned artist and experienced traveler, has convinced her and her bricklayer husband Ananias to make the journey to the New World. Land, they are promised, more goodly and beautiful than they can ever imagine. But nothing goes as planned from landing at the wrong location, to facing starvation, to the endless wait for help to arrive. And, beyond her comprehension, Elinor finds herself utterly alone. . . .
MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
Author Shannon McNear writes about and era and a bit of history I have only heard of, but knew nothing at all about this time in history. The Colony of Roanoke Island is a different kind of story for me. The horriffic things these settlers had to face, yet the joy of finding their own home and way of life. This was before America was discovered and there were quite a few different Indian settlers that wasn’t happy to have then around.
I think McNear does a wonderful job of research it takes to write an amazing story such as this one. The emotions of this story will have you turning the pages until the very end because you want to find what happens next. If you are interested in the Lost Colony of Roanoke, this is an awesome book to read to see what it might have been all those centuries ago.
This one is a Five Stars for me. I encourage you to check out this book for yourself. It is well worth the hours it takes to her this one.
More from Shannon
Why did I write this story? Well, God shoved the opportunity under my nose, and I didn’t want to be guilty of taking the easy way out, by saying no. 😊
Really, while the concept was fascinating, the execution was daunting, and sometimes terrifying. The Elizabethan Era—before the King James Bible and even before Shakespeare was popular! As a student of the Revolutionary War and surrounding times, I felt very much out of my depth.
Though the research sucked me in, it was also daunting. Sifting through various interpretations of the primary accounts and their own speculations on why they felt things must have gone a certain way. Trying to “find” my story amongst all the theories and opinions. Above all, getting to know my characters and letting them come alive in my own imagination.
And come alive, they did—in full color, with a vividness I did not expect. I hope I was able to translate even a portion of what I envisioned to the page, so that you also can see them!
Book Description:
Anthropology professor Marc Blake is on a “hero’s journey.” His challenge is to overcome a troubling medical diagnosis –a virus from a tick bite. Along the way he shares his deepest thoughts as the reader follows his courageous efforts to survive. May, an attractive Danish woman, also endures setbacks with resilience, gradually coming center stage in the story. Her husband Kai has a passion for growing herbs and healthy vegetables, marveling how gardening provides a sense of purpose, good health, direct contact with nature, and companionship. Marc’s niece, a natural beauty and ex-model, offers readers a comical, on-again, off-again romantic episode with a Silicon Valley genius she fears might outshine her. Will she prove to be his equal?
Quirky humor injects both lightness and conflict into a 30-year marriage. A six-year old’s “best summer ever” is a reminder that life’s an absolute miracle. Collectively this extended family contests a widespread belief that life is happening to us – that we are passive consumers. On the contrary, each character in this upbeat book is actively self-guided, perfecting their passions and offering generous support to family and friends.
Though author David Wann has previously written non-fiction books about sensible, sustainable lifestyles, in his first-novel these themes are woven right into a compelling story. “Our lives don’t look much different than most Americans,” the characters might say. “Really, we are not ‘doing without,’ more like doing within.” Kai enjoys investing in regional businesses, and also loves to travel effortlessly on Denver’s bike paths. Meatless Mondays or grilled-salmon Sundays are a great way for the outgoing May to bring friends together for active conversation. Each character would insist that kindness and gratitude are encoded in our genes and are far more powerful than anger. In a world that’s currently so full of disruption and confusion, they offer both a sense of direction and grounded hope.
MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
Reading the title of this book, it seemed to be a fun and enjoyable read, and it was indeed, just in a little different way. David Wann is telling Marc’s story of how to survive a tick bite diagnosis by living a somewhat healthy life. And we follow Marc’s journey.
Wann does a pretty good job with research and writing this novel. The characters were believable and the story itself was intriguing. I found some areas dragging a bit but overall I think this book is a good read, and has some valuable lessons we can all learn. An interesting book I feel we can all learn something from. I encourage you to check this one out. This is Four Stars for me.
A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
AUTHOR INTERVIEW WITH DAVID WANN, AUTHOR OF TICKLING THE BEAR
After writing a trio of books about sustainable human designs and behaviors – Affluenza, Simple Prosperity and The New Normal, David Wann was driven to write a novel about people who lead intentionally modest yet remarkable lives, rooted in their places and steadily mastering their passions. “It took me five years to write,” he says, “and one by one the traits described in Simple Prosperity came to life in the quirky, amiable characters in Tickling the Bear.”__________________________________________________________________________________What is your book Simple Prosperity about?It describes an emerging American lifestyle in which we finally break free of over-consumption – what we called “affluenza” in a previous book. Our current way of life is also not a great match with the equipment we were – like our psyches, genes, and hands. This mismatch of psychology, biology, and politics prevents us from taking care of ourselves and the environment. Fortunately, we are already inventing a new way of life that is twice as satisfying yet uses only half the resources we currently use. What will take the place of consumption, since it’s become the centerpiece of our way of life?I can easily imagine a lifestyle that is culturally richer yet materially leaner and more efficient. Information is much more precise and customized, eliminating a lot of waste; people are more involved socially, more aware aesthetically, and better caretakers of living systems – including ourselves. Instead of deadlines and dying species, they want lifelines and living wealth. Are there examples of culturally rich lifestyles like the one you describe in the book?Yes, when I travel to countries like Costa Rica, for example, the people appear to be every bit as happy even though their incomes are very small compared to fluffed-up U.S. incomes. In countries like Denmark, Sweden, Germany, and Italy, peoples’ homes are much smaller – often half the size – yet Europeans in general are far more politically active; they have wider social networks; fewer violent crimes; better health; much more time for leisure activities like being in nature. We Americans like to think we are number one in all things, but the data doesn’t support our arrogance. We may be on top when it comes to Gross Domestic Product, health care expenditures and the average size of our house but we also lead the world in debt per capita, pollution, military expenditures, children in poverty, percentage of people in prison, obesity, and infant mortality. So what is all the spending really buying us?You write that happiness depends on how well basic human needs are met. So if needs like social connection, stimulating work, and creative play are not met, you’re saying we resort to consumption instead? Absolutely. Over-consumption is an addiction, and addictions arise when we’re off-balance and insecure, as our society now is. Because so many feel empty, in effect we want something to want. But consumption can’t really fill us up unless we’re consuming something of real value in moderate, sensible amounts. When we are healthy, active, and stimulated by life’s many adventures, we don’t need or want to buy as much. Gratification is about infinite and often insatiable wants, while happiness is more grounded in meeting achievable, satisfying needs. We’re stuck in the gratification mode, not tapping into the REAL wealth. Instead of more stuff in our already-stuffed lives, we can choose fewer things but better things of higher quality; fewer visits to the doctor and more visits to museums and friends’ houses. Greater use of our hands and minds in creative activities like playing a flute, building a table, knitting a sweater, or harvesting the season’s first juicy, heirloom tomato. These are the things that matter, and we can choose them if we spend less time, money, and energy being such obedient, desperate consumers!We can ask, what kind of buildings and neighborhoods should we design to ensure high rates of social connection? What kind of agriculture not only provides a good living for farmers and the food industry but also delivers the sort of nutrition that human bodies actually need? Simple prosperity is not about what we give up, but what we take back: clarity, sanity, purpose, meaning, hope, and momentum.My new novel, Tickling the Bear, portrays a small band of colorful, change makers on the cusp of a new society – one in which simple prosperity is the new normal.
Searching for Home
By Jill Weatherholt
Contemporary, Inspirational Romance
Paperback & ebook, 224 Pages
December 28, 2021 by Love Inspired
When injured professional bull rider Luke Beckett returns to his hometown to recover, he doesn’t expect his B and B host and physical therapist to be his first and only love, Meg Brennan. He’s also unprepared for Meg’s adorable triplets to steal his heart. Luke’s past has him doubting he’s good enough for Meg and the children, but they might be just what the doctor ordered to help him heal…
MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
The fact that three triplets stole Luke’s heart was the heartwarming part of this book for me. Luke was home after an injury and he walked into more than he ever thought. His old flame had taken over the B and B and and the triplets were a plus to his life right now. But where will all of this find him?
Searching for Home by Jill Weatherholt is a Love Inspired sweet story of forgiveness and second chances. I know some have the idea that Love Inspired books are not full blown stories and not worth the read, but I’m telling you, they ARE worth your read and this one was like a novella. I loved the flawed characters and the way they developed and wanted to better themselves as the story unfolds. There were some harsh baggage that had to be dealt with, a lot if emotions flying around. But isn’t that like real life. This story is so realistic. These characters are so realistic. And those twins stole my heart. You need to read this one. I’m giving this Five Stars, and you will understand why when you read this one!
KidVenture books are interactive stories for middle grade readers who want to learn how to start a business. Kids learn practical business math, economics, marketing, negotiation, problem solving, and resilience through characters they care about.
In Twelve Weeks To Midnight Blue, Chance starts a pool cleaning company in his neighborhood over the summer. His younger sister Addie wants in on the business and, in the excerpt below, finds a creative way to make her brother want to partner with her.
When I was done, I emptied the bucket of debris into our large trashcan and I put up the nets. I headed to the kitchen for some of my mom’s iced tea. Addie was at the table drawing. She was always doing art. Ponies and puppies, bears and bunnies, that sort of thing. Lots of pinks and purples, sparkles and glitter. Girly stuff. Rainbows and sunsets. Boring stuff, if you ask me.
I reached into the fridge, poured myself a glass and took a big gulp. Ah, that felt good. I downed the full glass and then poured myself another one. As I sipped it I flipped through the newspaper my dad had left on the counter. Nothing caught my eye. Then I glanced over at what Addie was drawing. I bet she’s drawing a unicorn or something just as silly—
“Wait a minute! Addie! What are you drawing?” I said, shocked.
She quickly scooped up her papers and stuffed them into her sketchbook and closed the cover. Mighty suspicious.
“Nothing.” She grinned.
“That didn’t look like nothing.”
“Just drawing.“
“What were you doing?”
“Why do you care?” she said defensively.
“I want to know.”
“It’s none of your business.”
“Oh, it is my business.” I glared at her. “It’s very much my business. In fact, I think you were actually drawing my business. Was that a swimming pool you were drawing?”
“No.” She cracked a smile. “I was just drawing water.”
I scowled.
“Water inside four walls!” I said, accusatorily. She started giggling. “In a backyard! With a diving board!” By now she was laughing uncontrollably.
“Let me see that!” I reached for her sketchbook. She pulled it away from me, but as she did that, a bunch of papers went flying into the air. And there it was. One of her drawings floated slowly down to the ground and when it landed I could see it, clear as day. Not just a swimming pool, but in bright orange big letters it said Pool Cleaning Service.
“Addison!” I shouted. “What are you doing?!”
“It’s called marketing,” she said in the voice of a grown-up, tired of explaining the same thing over and over again to a child.
“You don’t even know what that is!”
“Yes I do,” she huffed. “Dad told me what it means.”
“Oh yeah, well what is it?”
“I am making flyers to promote my pool cleaning business.”
“You don’t have a pool cleaning business!” I stomped my foot. “I do.”
“Not yet, I don’t, but I expect that soon I will.”
I looked down again at the flyer she had drawn. There was a phone number on it. I pointed to it.
“Mom said I could use her number,” she said.
I was about to tell her this whole thing was crazy, it would never work. But I was stopped short in my tracks. I do believe my jaw was open. I might have even been drooling, if you want to know the truth.
“Addie!” I gave her a big hug. “This is a great idea! That’s exactly what I need to find new customers.”
“But you don’t know how to draw.”
“Yes I do,” I said defensively.
“No, you don’t,” she smirked. “Even your stick figures don’t look like sticks, they look like nervous spaghetti.”
“You have a point. Maybe you can draw them for me.”
“No thanks,” she said and quickly picked up her papers and started to head out of the kitchen.
“Wait! Addie wait!”
“I’ll pay you.”
“How much?”
“I don’t know. A dollar.”
“No way,”
“Two dollars?” I said hopefully.
She shook her head
“Three?”
“Half.”
“A half dollar?” I giggled. “Ok, sure.”
“No, I want half of everything you make cleaning pools.”
“What?!” I shrieked.
“That’s right, 50-50.”
“No way, not a chance! Get lost.”
“Ok,” she said in that you’re-going-to-regret-this tone of voice and started to walk away.
I swallowed. There was something stuck in my throat. Ok, you might even say it was pride. I swallowed my pride and called out, “Addie! Come back.”
“Yes, brother?” she teased.
“I’ll give you a third.”
She pretended to think about it, and then said, “No.”
“Forty percent.”
“No.”
“Forty! Addie, that’s a lot.”
“I don’t want forty, I want to be your partner. An equal partner.”
“My partner?” I said sarcastically.
“That’s right. Your partner.”
“But you don’t know anything about cleaning pools. And you’re too little to carry heavy buckets of wet leaves.”
“And you don’t know how to draw. And it sure doesn’t seem like you know much about marketing either.”
“You want me to give you half of my business just because you can draw flyers? That hardly seems fair. I can get anyone to draw pictures of a pool for me.”
“It’s not just drawing, Chance. It told you, it’s called marketing. I have Mom’s phone ready to go, so we can take calls. I made a map of the neighborhood so we can write down which houses we visited and left flyers with, and what they said. I’ll find us new customers, if you make me your partner.”
I scratched my head. There was something appealing about what she was proposing. It was no fun knocking on doors all day in the hot sun, hoping someone needed their pool cleaned. “Ok, ok. Maybe we can do half of any new customer you bring.”
“No,” she said. “I want to be a full partner in the whole business, or I’m not interested.”
Meet the Author:
I wrote my first KidVenture book after years of making up stories to teach my kids about business and economics. Whenever they’d ask how something works or why things were a certain way, I would say, “Let’s pretend you have a business that sells…” and off we’d go. What would start as a simple hypothetical to explain a concept would become an
adventure spanning several days as my kids would come back with new questions which would spawn more plot twists. Rather than give them quick answers, I tried to create cliffhangers to get them to really think through an idea and make the experience as interactive as possible.
I try to bring that same spirit of fun, curiosity and challenge to each KidVenture book. That’s why every chapter ends with a dilemma and a set of questions. KidVenture books are fun for kids to
read alone, and even more fun to read together and discuss. There are plenty of books where kids learn about being doctors and astronauts and firefighters. There are hardly any where they learn what it’s like to run small business. KidVenture is different. The companies the kids start are modest and simple, but the themes are serious and important.
I’m
an entrepreneur who has started a half dozen or so businesses and have had my share of failures. My dad was an entrepreneur and as a kid I used to love asking him about his business and learning the ins and outs of what to do and not do. Mistakes make the best stories — and the best lessons. I wanted to write a business book that was realistic, where you
get to see the characters stumble and wander and reset, the way entrepreneurs do in real life. Unlike most books and movies where business is portrayed as easy, where all you need is one good idea and the desire to be successful, the characters in KidVenture find that every day brings new problems to solve.
MY THOUGHTS ON THIS AUDIO BOOK
I have read several books by Kari Bovée’ and love them. Today I have the privilege to review the audio version of Girl With a Gun.  I thoroughly enjoyed this story of the sharpshooter Annie Oakley and learning more about her history in this book. This book is fiction, so parts of this story may not be exactly like the real story because Fiction  authors can take liberties with their stories, and this is important to remember while reading this book. I feel the author does an amazing job writing this story, creating characters I have grown to love, and a few that took me a while. All in all, the storyline and characters grew much as the story unfolds. I’m looking forward to listening to the next book in this series, which I will review here on my blog in a few days.
And now for the audio part of this review. Susanna Burney does a very nice job with the narration of this book. I like the way she changes her voice for the different sounds and characters. The expressions in her voice as she reads the story makes it more interesting to listen to.  I had no trouble listening to her smooth tones, she has a voice that is easy to listen to, which means everything when listening to an audiobook.
I am giving Girl with a Gun by Kari Bovee Four Stars. If you enjoy a good Cozy Mystery, you will love this book. I encourage you to check this one out!
A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
Interview with author Kari Bovée’
Annie Oakley is a fascinating person in history. Why did you choose her as a protagonist for your mystery novels?
I love learning about amazing and empowered women in history and those are the types of women I want to feature in my novels. We’ve seen depictions of Annie Oakley in plays and movies, but I always thought they portrayed her as rather one dimensional. Several years ago I saw a PBS American Experience special on her and I realized what an incredible person she was. Her life as a child was not an easy one, but she discovered early on she had a talent for something. Shooting. She shot game to help put food on the table and to sell to local merchants. After she won a shooting contest against Frank Butler, who became her husband, she started utilizing her talent and eventually became one of the most famous women in the world excelling at a sport that was dominated by men. And she did this without compromising herself in any way. She didn’t try to bend to anyone else’s ideal of what it was to be a celebrity, or a performer, or a person. She made her way in the world without being anyone other than herself, and that was tough for women in the 1800’s.
All authors have a different path as they seek publication. What was your journey to publication like?
Long! I’ve had a couple of agents throughout the years, but their vision for my career was different from mine. I opted to go with a hybrid publisher to get my feet wet, but now have my own imprint and publish my own books. That said, I didn’t go into independent publishing without thoroughly investigating it and learning as much as I could about it. And, I would never put a book out into the world without having a team of professionals helping me with editing, cover design, etc. It’s a lot of work, but I enjoy having ultimate control over my books and career.
Your Annie Oakley mystery series and your Grace Michelle mystery series deal with the Wild West and Roaring twenties, respectively. What do you think it is about those periods that capture our imagination?
Both eras represented a new freedom and a little bit of danger, and I think those two elements are captivating to people. The Wild West represented a completely new way of living. People moved west for new opportunities, to escape from the constraints of society, and to create their own futures. In the 1920’s there was economic prosperity. We were coming off of WWI and there was a certain optimism in the country. I think people collectively made the decision to live life to the fullest, to be wild and creative and free. Both eras created a new mindset for people, and that mindset and freedom created change and new opportunities for everyone, even those with dubious motives.
4. Which authors are your inspiration—in your writing life and/or your personal life?
I’ve been inspired by so many. In my writing life of course the Grande Dame of mystery, Agatha Christie, is a great source of inspiration. I also like mystery writers Elizabeth George, M.C. Beaton, Anne Perry, Deanna Raybourn, Rhys Bowen, and Alyssa Maxwell.
When I’m in the mood to completely escape reality I like to read some of the 19th century classic authors like the Bronte sisters, Jane Austen, and Elizabeth Gaskill. I never get tired of them!
 I’ve found Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic a wonderful source for inspiration and creativity, and I’ve worked through Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way a couple of times.
In the third book in the series, Folly at the Fair, what kind of research was needed to portray the Chicago World’s Fair (the event that anchors this story), the era, and the characters in the book as accurately as possible?
I first started on the internet and tried to find as much as I could on Chicago and the Columbian Exposition (World’s Fair) of 1893. I also devoured Erik Larson’s Devil in the White City because he made mention of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show several times in that book. But, I really needed a map that would show me the layout of the fair and the grounds at and near Jackson Park. Luckily I found it in this amazing coffee table book titled Spectacle in the White City. It came complete with said map, and it also had tons of information about the buildings, the exhibits, and the people involved in creating such a wonderland. If I found someone or something interesting, then I would research that person, event, hotel, or whatever, and then decide if I wanted to put it into the book.
But when her husband falls mysteriously ill, and an assassination attempt is made on the queen, the sharpshooting amateur sleuth may find herself out to sea before her ship comes in.
Can the clever markswoman solve the double-barreled mystery before it’s too late?
Peccadillo at the Palace is the second novel in the Annie Oakley Mystery Series. If you like a fast-paced mystery with unexpected plot twists that will keep you guessing until the very end, you’ll love this riveting historical mystery featuring America’s favorite sure-shot.
