I’m delighted to share a little background on The Glass Bottom Boat, the first book in my Christian romantic suspense “Flight to Freedom” series.
Many writers concur that it is indeed a long and winding road to publication. But when a message is on a writer’s heart—be it fact or fiction—it simply cannot be ignored! Thus begins the dance of determination…
The initial idea for The Glass Bottom Boat was sparked on a family vacation to Jamaica. Even though I have a thoroughly irrational fear of drowning, I looked forward to going out on the resort glass bottom boat—which we planned for our very last day. Unfortunately, the last day dawned along with a huge windstorm which prevented any boats to go out on the ocean. I was bitterly disappointed! And then my imagination was set alight as I considered what could happen on such a boat, and exactly how petrifying it would be for someone afraid of drowning.
The story began. And so did the dance.
I waited SIX LONG YEARS for this particular novel to be published. It was a waltz between agent, publishing houses, and me. Sometimes I was twirled around the dance floor clothed in a gown of optimism, and other times I could be found slumped on the sidelines, waiting to be picked like the proverbial wallflower.
This stretched my paper-thin patience to the limit. Rejected too many times to mention, it certainly wasn’t the literary journey I would have chosen—but it was God’s journey for me and my book. I happen to believe His timing is always perfect. Sometimes we see that in hindsight and sometimes we simply have to trust.
But like Madison—the protagonist in this story—I’ve learned much in the process. Perseverance, patience, and always holding on to hope. For Madison, the timing for love had to be right, and for me, the timing for my books has to be right, too.

The Glass Bottom Boat, The Lighthouse Baby, and The Orphan Beach.
All 3 novels were published by Anaiah Press within the space of one crazy, busy year. It seems God is teaching me His timing is always best in the slow, slow, quick-quick, slow.
And I’m more than happy to let Him lead me in the dance!
