MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

Amelia Richards was an independent woman, but when she learns her boyfriend and baby’s father was shot down in the war, she was all alone, knowing nothing about the baby’s father’s family.

As usual, Melody Carlson writes a gripping story that will have readers engulfed in the story until the very last page, wanting to know what happens to Amelia and her baby. This is a very well written story, the only thing is, I was wishing for a longer story and more details. But for a novella, this is a sweet wonderful story of love, patience and endurance. As well as love and surprises. I highly recommend this book for anyone to read. And though it is written as a Christmas story, it can be read anytime of the year.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

Christmas at Grey Sage started out to be just another Christmas story but as I kept reading I realized it was much more. And a more and more people showed up and got stranded because of the snow storm, tensions begin to fly high. But as the story goes on, it was pretty clear God brought this specific group of people together for a reason, for the good of the people there.

Mrs. Nichols does such a wonderful job of detailing the Grey Sage Inn as well as the snow-covered Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Santa Fe where the Inn was located. It was a wonderful cozy feeling reading this book even though outside here in November is not that cold and with no snow! All in all this is a wonderful read, one I believe many will enjoy during this Holiday Season. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting a good cozy Christmas read!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

When I see a new Jen Turansky book I know we are in for a lots of unbelievable situations and a ton of laughs, because that’s what her books are! This book can be read as a stand alone but it’s more fun to read if you have read the first book in Apart From The Crowd Series, Behind the Scenes.

Gertrude is stull working for Mrs. Davenport, and this time is wearing a dress with a bustle made by the older woman, who thinks bustles should be as big as can be handled, even though a birdcage has to be used to carry out that idea. Even though this scene gave me a lot of laughs, to me it was a bit too long, to many pages was given to this one scene. But then the action begins when Gertrude gets into even more questionable situations, and especially with the dashing Mr. Harrison Sinclair. And I could go on and on but this is a book you need to read for yourself to really have the comical effects it’s suppose to have.

Ms. Turano creates amazingly effective characters that play there parts so well as the book progresses. The more you read the more you want to stay in the pages of the book to see what happens next. The Writing is phenomenal, I love the historical setting and the vivid scenes and history I learn from reading this book. I highly recommend this book to everyone, because everyone needs a laugh once in a while.

What Readers Want to Know from Jen

Hey Everyone! Thank you so much for stopping by today. Because I’m in the midst of a first draft, and in case you don’t know, I don’t actually care for first drafts – all those pesky blank pages, but…I’m getting off track…where was I? Oh yes, why I brought up first drafts in the first place. You see, I’m a little scattered when I’m doing a draft, and because of that, and because my mind is a scary place to visit while filling up those already-mentioned blank pages, I was having a tough time coming up with a post for Celebrate Lit. That’s why I reached out to my fabulous readers, and…here are some of the questions their inquiring minds wanted to know about me or my books. I hope you enjoy them!

Why write in the Gilded Age?

When I started writing historical romance after experimenting with other genres, I didn’t write Gilded age but Regency pieces. However, when I ran across the book “The Court of Mrs. Astor in Gilded Age New York” by Greg King, I was intrigued, and a little baffled about how it came to be that I was so unfamiliar with that riveting time in history. It’s an era where unprecedented fortunes were made at a remarkable rate, those fortunes responsible for so many scandals that I’ll have enough fodder for stories to last me for years. The antics of the members of high society are vastly intriguing, as are the fashions of the day, which is exactly why I’ve never had second thoughts about choosing to write Gilded Age romances.

How do you come up with such unusual names for your characters?

I get asked this a lot. And, contrary to popular belief, I don’t make up the names of my characters. I search through obituaries from the 1800’s, peruse books on the New York Four-Hundred (those were members of high society – chosen by Mr. Ward McAllister, the social arbiter of the day,) and I also scour old census records. I do occasionally pair a first name with a different surname so that my main characters aren’t real historic figures because that can get tricky. Not long ago, while reading through Memoirs of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania: Person and Genealogical, Volume 1, I found a bit on my great-grandfather, which was cool – not that I’ll be using him, but I might have a character modeled after him at some point in time. Another interesting tidbit about choosing names is this – names only work for me if the characters decide they like the names I select for them. If they don’t like the name, they simply stop cooperating. I can’t write their stories until I choose another name. An example – I was recently going to name a heroine Georgianna – but it was like trying to write through mud. As soon as I changed her name to Myrtle, I was back in business.

What is the most ordinary thing you enjoy doing?

I love to shovel snow.

Who is responsible for your book covers? Do you choose the model/setting?

Bethany House’s design team does all of my covers, and occasionally they hire out the job to other design houses. The only input I give is when I send in a character/setting sheet, describing my heroine and listing a few scenes that I feel might be good for the background. In “Out of the Ordinary,” I suggested having Gertrude on or near a boat, and the design team then hired a model who resembled my character sketch and put her on a boat.

Which character has been the most difficult to write?

All of my characters give me trouble at some point in time, but recently, Mrs. Davenport was the character who was being incredibly difficult. For the first three edits of “Out of the Ordinary,” she was too complicated and a bit on the dark side, but after I changed her backstory, and remembered she was supposed to be eccentric, not deranged, she turned into a delightful lady, one I enjoyed writing.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever Googled while doing research for a book?

I don’t know if this is crazy, more on the lines of idiotic, but I once googled Gentleman’s Clubs when I was looking for an all-male club my hero would want to join. That was a definite mistake, especially since I didn’t include a very important word – historic. Well, the next thing you know, all sorts of naughty sites were flashing in front of my eyes, and to this day, I still get advertisements for singles looking for a good time and all sorts of other interesting…offers.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

Nope, it never entered my head to pursue a career in writing, nor was I ever a person to even keep a diary or a journal. I’m pretty sure I wanted to be a movie star when I was younger, but when that didn’t pan out, I majored in fashion and spent quite a few years working for department stores. It wasn’t until my son was in third grade and we wrote a book together just for fun that I began entertaining the thought of trying to see my stories in print.

How long did it take you to break into the publishing world, and how many books did you write before that happened?

What everyone needs to understand is that publishing is a cut-throat business. I had no idea when I decided to try and get published what the competition was like, and if I had, well, I might have nipped the whole idea of getting a book into print right in the bud. But, because I knew I only wanted to go the traditional route, it soon became clear, what with all the suggestions I was getting about the work I was sending out to agents, that I needed to up my game…a lot. I experimented with quite a few different genres – middle grade, YA, contemporary women’s fiction, Regency romance, and then Gilded Age, getting really proficient with query letters in the process. It wasn’t until I started writing historical romance, though, that I really began getting requests for full manuscript. After I’d been writing for about three years, I finally signed with an agent. She never sold the book she signed on to represent, but after I wrote “A Change of Fortune,” she sold that within two months. Long story short – it took me about seven years to get published from the time I wrote my first book, and…I have seven manuscripts that will never see the light of day because they’re awful.

Is there a reason you include so many animals in your stories?

I’ve always been an animal lover, and as such, I really enjoy writing different animals into my scenes. Dogs are my favorites, followed by pigs, and most of the characteristics my animals have are traits I’ve seen in real life. Matilda, the pig in “A Match of Wits,” was inspired by a pig I used to see in New York. She was so quirky, as well as intelligent, that I knew I would have to write a pig in at least one of my stories. This current series does not have as many animals because I do want to keep my stories fresh. But, having said that, my next series finds my heroine visiting a farm, and well, I don’t know many farms that don’t have animals, especially adorable cows by the name of Buttercup that may or may not have the odd tendency of moseying into the house to eat pie whenever the urge strikes.

Last question – Have any of the crazy antics in your books been inspired by real-life events???

I seem to be a magnet for weird things happening, so…yes, quite a few of those antics were inspired by real life events. I’ll share just one since I do need to get back to that first draft. I live near Denver, and when my son was little, we used to visit the Denver Zoo. That zoo just happens to have a very large flock of peacocks – peacocks that took one look at me one day – and I must add that I wasn’t doing anything except pulling my son in a wagon, and the next thing I knew, I was being chased through the zoo by what seemed to me to be the entire flock of peacocks – all seemingly intent on trying to murder me. Funny how fast a mom can run while pulling a wagon when in fear for her life. My son thought it was fabulous fun, and bless those members of the staff who came to my rescue. They were almost successful in not laughing, and…I received a free lunch after the dastardly peacocks were chased away. That event is what inspired me to write a mad flock of peacocks in “In Good Company.”

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

Benaiah Troyer and Susanna was suppose to be getting married soon, but Benaiah’s parents were killed in an accident, and how can he ask Susanna to marry him and raise his three younger sisters? So he breaks it off with Susanna, even though he still works for her dad in his glass blowing shop. As well as sneaking the their house and leaving her gifts each month. When Suzanna’s dad announces his upcoming wedding, selling his glass blowing business and moving to Iowa, she decides to find out who is leaving her gifts to see if he wants to marry her. After meeting her new family she does not want to move and live with them.

Susanna’s dad shows no respect for her, planning his move and his wedding without Susanna knowing a thing about it. I really felt bad for her and was wishing the same thing. I really just wanted to slap some sense into that new wife to be. And better yet is Susanna’s dad, letting her be treated that way. I was so frustrated at him too, he was acting worse than a teen in love. I’m glad Benaiah had the sense to let him know what he was doing to his own daughter.

Now about the book. The Characters were very well created and developed well throughout the story. And I you started reading I was totally hooked. Laura Hilton has a unique way of writing Amish fiction, making her books a little different from other Amish. I enjoy and appreciate that she always has the gospel of Jesus, explaining how to know Him in all of her books, just as she has in The Christmas Admirer.

If you are looking for a good Christmas read, this is definitely one you want to read. Amish fiction lovers responded positively and immediately to Laura V. Glass Blowing and The Christmas Admirer

Right before my youngest son joined the Coast Guard we went on a short mini-vacation to Springfield, Missouri, actually going farther north almost to Kansas City to see another Amish community near there in Osceola. There is a cheese factory there and my son wanted to try some of their cheeses – such as a ghost pepper cheese. Too spicy for me.

But upon the return to Springfield, Steve read about a glass blowers shop in the downtown area. We found the address and went to visit it. It is owned by an older gentleman and his son. They had a display area set up where people could see their wares and buy them and then a work area where the son mostly worked, and talked about how the fire needed to be so hot, and showed us how he worked and made things. As we watched, he made a lovely flower, a lily, in different colors of glass, green, white, pinks.

It was fascinating.

And I got to thinking what if…

So I did some more research. Asked questions. Probably drove them nuts. But when Whitaker House indicated they’d be interested in a Christmas novel, I proposed one about a glass blower.

The story is set in Jamesport, Missouri, and while completely stand alone, it does have some continuing characters from other books I’ve written set in Jamesport. If you are interested, the books set there are:

I haven’t read any books about an Amish glass blower, but that’s not to say they aren’t out there. I haven’t read all the Amish books available. Jamesport is an area that is more tourist-oriented than the books set in Seymour / Webster County Missouri. They give buggy tours, have bed and breakfasts, open their homes for visitors to eat supper with them, and have businesses.

All Amish districts are different and the rules vary depending on the bishop and preachers. Some are more liberal and some more conservative. Some keep themselves distant and don’t welcome attention from non-Amish and some embrace it. While Jamesport is not as touristy as some districts in Lancaster Pennsylvania or in Ohio, it is much more so than others.

Susanna’s Cranberry Salad

Ingredients

• 3 cups fresh or frozen cranberries (thawed), chopped
• 1 can (20 ounces) unsweetened crushed pineapple, drained
• 2 cups miniature marshmallows
• 1 medium apple, chopped
• 2/3 cup sugar
• 1/8 teaspoon salt
• 2 cups heavy whipping cream
• 1/4 cup chopped walnuts

Directions

1. In a large bowl, mix the first six ingredients until blended. Refrigerate, covered, overnight.
2. In a large bowl, beat cream until stiff peaks form. Just before serving, fold cream and walnuts into cranberry mixture.Makes 16 servings.

Susanna’s Cranberry Sauce

For on top of turkey sandwiches as Becca requested

Ingredients

• 4 cups fresh or frozen cranberries (thawed), chopped
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 cup water or orange juice

Directions

In colander, rinse cranberries. In sauce pan, add water or orange juice and sugar, boil until sugar is dissolved. Add cranberries and return to a boil. Lower to simmer and cook about 10 minutes or until most of the cranberries had burst. Let cool.

Susanna’s “Love Portion” Gingerbread

Ingredients

• 6 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 T baking powder
• 1 T ground ginger
• 1 t ground nutmeg
• 1 t ground cloves
• 1 t ground cinnamon
• 1 cup shortening, melted slightly
• 1 cup molasses
• 1 cup brown sugar
• ½ c water
• 1 egg
• 1 t vanilla

Directions

Shift together flour, baking powder, ginger, nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon. Set aside.

In mixing bowl, mix shortening, molasses, brown sugar, water, egg and vanilla until smooth. Gradually stir in the dry ingredients until they are absorbed. Divide dough into three pieces, pat down until about 1 ½ inch thickness, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for three hours.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. On lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to ¼ inch thickness. Cut in desired shapes. Place cookies about 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake for 10 – 12 minutes in preheated oven. Cool on wire racks. When cool, decorate as desired.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

Wow, author Pepper Basham does it again in her book Charming the Troublemaker.  Another classy but sassy contemporary romance that will curl your toenails, yet Ms. Basham has a way of writing that gives readers a most clean and enjoyable read! This story has two main characters, Alex and Rainy. Alex, ever the charmer and big flirt, has issues of his own, but is unwilling to tell. Rainy is loveable, loyal and deeply loves her family and friends. And then there is Mama Mitchell. I absolutely fell in love with this lady and her sweet personality. And her wisdom was not only good for the Alex and Rainy , it is good for any of us today! Reading this book a second time is a must for me so I can really get a full grip of these amazing characters as well as their supporting characters and everything else in this wonderful book. A read has made sure the characters knows the Love of Jesus. I love and appreciate the way Ms. Basham weaves the Christian life into her characters in this exciting romance with a touch of suspense added in!

I have a thing for underdogs.

Misfits.

Lots souls who desperately need to find where they belong.

I can’t help it! Call it a ‘fix-it’ mentality or an awareness that God rescued me and now I want to rescue other people…even fictional characters, but I’m definitely a softy for those characters that people are less likely to root for. Catherine from The Thorn Bearer/Keeper became my first rescue…and I just HAD to find another.

I guess that’s how Charming the Troublemaker came into existence.

Dr. Alex Murdock desperately needed to be rescued.

In a bad way.

If you’ve had a chance to read my first book in the Mitchell’s Crossroads series, A Twist of Faith, you’ll know that Alex doesn’t seem to be made up of much hero material. He’s a flirt, a little arrogant, and…well, kind of like a lost puppy.

As book 1 grew and came to a close, I knew Alex and Rainey’s story would be next…but I immediately ran into a real problem.

Who in the world was Alex Murdock? We really didn’t get to know him very much in book 1. He zoomed in a few times, ruffling feathers and then finally showing off some interesting kindness/compassion in the end, but…he was still a big-time flirt.

So the question emerged: Can a flirt be a hero?

What is Alex hiding behind that ready smile and sense of humor? Why does he seem so lost?

The answers were surprising!! Just wait.

The Mitchell family draw him right in, as they did with Dee, and his world is forever changed.

And then there’s Rainey. Strong-willed and independent, she is deeply wounded by her ex-husband’s betrayal. Though she gives off all these ‘confident’ vibes, she hides her insecurities behind a tough exterior in a desire to keep people at a distance – well, everyone except her family.

Alex rocks her world with his ready charm.

And she sees beyond the plastic grin to recognize another wounded soul.

Throwing them together into a book has been a hilarious and heart-stirring adventure, I wasn’t prepared to encounter. They’re so much fun!

AND…he’s ADORKABLE!! Seriously!! He is SUCH a dork, but makes me grin. And…he looks like Armie Hammer 😉

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

Wow, this books is breathtaking. So full of fast pace suspense that you will not want to put this book down! I had to lay it aside a few times but I pretty much read until I was finished because I had to find out who was behind all of the horrific things that were happening! People killed, disappearing, not talking to authorities, something was going in with Mason Pharmaceutical and they were trying to hid it, any way they could.  And Kate Sullivan would do anything in her power to find out just what these people were hiding. But it is not without danger. To Kate and anyone else who gets involved.

Author Rachel Dylan writes an awesome suspense/thriller that will have you looking over your shoulder. Mason Pharmaceutical is on her back, watching every move she makes, but who could be working for them? The characters here are believable and the plot moved pretty fast so you get through the story pretty fast. But this one will stay with you for a while! I highly recommend this fast pace thriller to everyone! You will certainly enjoy this book!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

When I signed up to review this book I had no idea what to expect. I have to say it turned out to be an excellent read. It took me a while to get into the book, for me the beginning was kind of slow, but as I kept reading, the more intrigued I became.

The story follows the life of Marco and Lettie. Because of health issues caused by the Second World War, Marco is forced to leave his home and family in Italy and move to South Africa to live with his bother’s family. Lettie was living her dream of joining her father in his practice at his surgery (Drs. office in today’s world). Marco was her first patient, and his health was so bad he was to see her every week. As the weeks and months pass, Marco’s health improved and their attraction grew.

I hardly know where to start with my opinion, the book is so chunked full of history, characters and just life. Marco’s life was not a happy one during the horrific changes during the war and afterward. He lost so much. And Lettie was content being who she was. To her, she was not the young lady expecting to find the man of her dreams.

Lettie and Marco were adorable characters that I fell in love with as soon as they met. It was the silent humbleness of each that drew me to them. And there was a host of supporting characters in their lives that made the plot grow into a wonderful story that will stay with me for a while. The Writing is excellent, Ms. Joubert does a wonderful job of weaving the many issues, historical details, and everything else happening in the story, and pulling it all together for a sweet ending. This story shows so much sadness, hurt and loneliness, but also strong love of family and friends, a strong faith and love in God, and a knowing that through all of the difficult circumstances, that God will make a way for happiness again.

I highly recommend The Crooked Path if you are looking for a good clean Historical Read. I love the setting of the story, some of it happens during the time I was born and in my early years. Which made me smile a lot. I encourage you to pick up a copy of this book and read it for many hours of enjoyment.

My Thoughts On This Book

Shelby Arroyo is only doing her job of assessing mineral rights in a Gold County mine, but someone isn’t happy with Shelby. Will they go as far as murder to stop her? And after pulling the beautiful girl from a ravine, rancher Barrett Thorn stays by her side as trouble keep coming her way. But the attraction forming between them just can’t be because Shelby family is responsible for th death if Barrett’s wife.

Cowboy Christmas Guardian is full of tension coming from many directions. There is a strong attraction between Barrett and Shelby, Barrett hates Shelby’s uncle and cousin, Barrett’s brothers are not happy with the time Barret and Shelby are spending together, and Shelby is in the middle of it all. And it doesn’t help that  Barrett’s mom welcomes Shelby into their home and family.

I really felt bad for Shelby, and feared for her life with everything going on to stop her from accessing the mine. And I loved the way Barrett came to her rescue every time something happened. Author Dana Mentink does a great job weaving all of the hurts, tension, frustrations and evil doings together and finishing a story that shows forgiveness, grace, love and acceptance. And I don’t want to elaborate on the story more because it would give away too much! I loved this story and I highly recommend it for a few hours of entertainment. And I love ‘Love Inspired’ books, because even though they are shorter stories, they are a wonderful read. Just as Cowboy Christmas Guardian. And I appreciate the was Ms Mentink weaves the Christian life into her characters! Go grab a copy of this book! You will not be disappointed!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Though Angela and Rose are sisters, they were completely different. Rose wants so badly to be a wife and a mother, but that roll belongs to Angela, though she sure isn’t happy. When a letter arrives from Lancaster County, the sisters decides to visit their mom’s Mennonite sister. Maybe this is what is needed to draw the two together.

This was a very interesting and a very different Mennonite story. I like Rose, her personality and lifestyle is enjoyable to get to know. But Angela was a different story for me. It took me a while to get use to her personality, and she wasn’t my favorite of the three main characters. Aunt Sylvia was a sweetheart, and just what the sisters needed. As they spent time with their aunt and her simple lifestyle, it was a pleasure to see the attitudes of the two sisters change, and mending the issues between them. I loved how this book covers both the Amish/Mennonite lifestyle as well as the English lifestyle.

I’ve always enjoyed Amish fiction and though this one is Mennonite, it is very similar. The simple life that Aunt Sylvia lived has a calming affect on both Rose and Angela, making them both take a closer look at their lives. This is an enjoyable book to read and I highly recommend it. I received this book from Litfuse to read and review. I was not required to write a positive review.  MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

It took me a little while to get into this book, with all of the details of Amy’s life and the setting for the story, but Into a Silent World grew on me. Amy is an interesting and determined 20 year old character, and some of the things she gets herself into will make you smile, or even laugh. The other characters in this story were interesting and likable and developed well as the story progresses. And I really enjoyed the Europe setting, and the vivid details in each scene. I’ve never been to Europe so it was fun imagining being there.

Into a Silent World is just fine as a stand alone read, but if you are planning on reading the third book in this series, I suggest reading the first book as well, to help you better understand the story and characters. About the Author

I am a mother of two wonderful grown up children and currently living in the UK, after living in Sweden for three years where I wrote my first book, “A Door Cracked Open.” I was blessed to be able to spend six months in USA before returning to the UK, my home country, to work with my editor in California on the edits of this book and visit friends.

I am an avid reader and linguist, having also spent some years living in France and have been fortunate enough to have taught Swedish and French over twenty-five years and translate for businesses and manuscripts in both languages. Being unemployed the past few years, has led to me becoming homeless. However, I never give up hope. As I try to portray in my books, God has always had His hand on me. Once again, He has stepped in right at the last minute. I now have a new job in Sweden and will be moving back there. Because I feel passionately about helping the homeless, a large percentage of my royalties will go directly to them.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

Living in their new home, the Schwartz family is happy to finally have a big home and farm. But when strange things start happening to members of the family, it is clear that someone doesn’t want them living there. And across the district, Neil Vance is concerned about his family since they had to sell their farm for such a low price just to pay off their dad’s debts. Neil and just about the entire community harbor hard feelings against the Schwartz family for ‘stealing’ their home as they so think. But when Neil meets Susanna Schwartz, it begins to stir feeling in him that he’s not too sure about.

I enjoyed this plain family, and plain community’s story. Everyone seemed to jump to conclusions when an offer is made on the farm and Mr. Schwartz accepts the offer, blaming the Schwartz family. The incidents that happened clearly showed that someone was forcing them out. Ms Gray does a good job of incorporating twists and turns throughout the story to keep you guessing who the guilty party is. The lovable characters developed well as the story progressed. And the story has a beautiful ending.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

 

Leanna McKee was in Castle Gate, Utah because of her late husband, but now that he is gone, tragically taken by the dangerous mines, she has no reason to be here. As soon as she gets word that a position is open in California with her cousin, she’s out of here. That was before Alex Pappa as Leanna to watch his brothers children until their baby was born. But nothing can happen between them. He is Greek, she is American.

The main characters, Leanna McKee and Alex Pappas had many difficult situations and struggles as we follow their story. These two were strong and independent characters, I enjoyed her spunk and his strong will. The papas family is adorable, especially the mom. They gave the story a homey feeling! Author Angie Dicken does a really good job of weaving this story together between the Greek workers and the greedy Americans! It has a super ending that will make everyone smile, but getting there is a very difficult road.

My Publishing Story: A Journey of Perfect Timing.

I wrote a story five years ago. My footing was finally solid on how to write, after a couple ACFW conferences and connecting with my bestie writing sister, Ashley. So in 2012, I poured my heart out within the parameters of what I’d learned.

The story I wrote stemmed from my heritage. From a very young age, I’ve been inspired by my grandfather. He was the son of a Greek coal miner who came over from Greece in the 1910’s. My grandfather always had wonderful stories to tell–he stirred up my intrigue for WWII era as he was a Purple Heart recipient (twice), and spoke of freeing concentration camps and invading Hitler’s homes; my grandfather lived a rags to riches legacy, having been born in a tent in a coal town, and then becoming a successful home and commercial builder–I declared I’d be an architect at age eleven…even majoring in Landscape Architecture in college.

Papou was one of my greatest heroes. And my novel was a tribute to him, to my Greek roots, to an American legacy.

So, at ACFW 2012, I took my novel to conference with more confidence than I had before. This story caught the attention of an agent– and I signed a contract with the Steve Laube Agency in November of that year. That was amazing…I chuckle now because the name of the room that I interviewed with Tamela was the “McKee” room–the last name of my heroine. A sign? Maybe. When she sent my story out for all publishers to see that next month, I thought my time for that book was just around the corner.

And…

Now it’s 2017, and that story is under contract with a publisher as of Fall 2016.

What timing, right?

Why the heck did it take so long? Not for lack of trying. My agent and I took every possible measure.

Why did I get rejection after rejection, and write two other books in the wait?

What happened between then?

Only in looking back, do I see why I had to wait for this book. And when I look back, I realize just how much Timing is His and there’s nothing I can do to speed it up or make it mine. All I can do is take courage, and wait.

I’ll give you a quick recap of what happened between 2013–when the book was put in the proverbial drawer of unwanted manuscripts–and now, 2017, the year it will get published (um, after a few rewrites and edits–always learning…).

In looking back, this is what I see:

My Community was Built. I fell in love with my writer friendships. A bit dramatic? Maybe, but it’s the truth. I connected with ladies who knew my heart as a writer, and allowed me into their lives in an authentic, Christ-loving way. I found hope in the writing journey because my friends held my hands and rubbed my back when all seemed lost. And in this, I grew not as a writer, but as a heart. My heart became soft for the needs of others and the value of authenticity in this short, precious life.




There was a Pride Monster, and He needed to kill it. Oh, Lord, if ever there was a pride monster, it was me. My gut reaction in every rejection, every criticism, every other person’s success was a measurement against them according to me. Yuck. Do you know what the best way to kill a Pride Monster? Starve it. Even though I had my sweet friends and my agent encouraging me along the way, my heart was set on publication and I was not getting that. I wanted it so badly that I turned ugly when it seemed to slip through my fingers with every rejection. And I spiraled and I came up for air to those authentic friendships speaking Truth in love. God knew what He was doing when He built my community, and He knew He would use it to lift me up and tear down my ugly.

The Darkest Valley Was Ahead. Everything stood still in 2014. My personal crisis gave me little room for any true focus on my writing success. If anything, it made the effort seem petty. When you go through your days wondering if you’ll make it to the next morning without a complete mental breakdown, you can’t really dream. My dream in those moments was to crawl out of my skin and run away. This was not about my writing, this was about God’s faithfulness to someone who was losing faith–in the person she loved, in the life she constructed, in the heart that was broken. Looking back (I did climb up and out of this valley), I needed this valley walk (or crawl) to happen when it did–without a book on the shelf, without confidence in something that I had accomplished. I needed brokenness to become stronger and know that my strength has nothing to do with me.

There are several other moments and signs that I see as I look back, but I’m not going for the longest blog post of 2017, but I do want to share two sweet confirmations that the timing really is His.

First, I got a book contract! You know this, but, the contract came at a time when I had grown peaceful in the journey–the pride monster lay slain, and I picked up a pen and took an opportunity. My Oklahoma Land Run book with Love Inspired Historical won the Manuscript Matchmakers contest…and WAS coming out in Spring 2018.

I had secretly told those closest to me, that it would’ve been nice for it to come out in September instead…just because that’s when the book opens–September, 1893–the historical date of the Land Run.

So, what happens after I turn in my complete book a few days before its deadline? My editor tells me they bumped up my date to September of 2017. And I am sure, for them, it had nothing to do with the history, but for me, it was everything to do with the history–and His timing. Look for my debut novel, The Outlaw’s Second Chance this September!

There’s more…

My second contract came in! And this was a wonderful surprise. My agent and I had found out last spring that a new series was being launched based on geographical places around the U.S. I immediately thought of my Coal country story. So, I put together a proposal for a book I’d written long ago…and got a contract with Barbour this Fall for my novel, My Heart Belongs in Castle Gate, Utah.

But, the timing? November 2017 is my release.

God’s Timing in its finest…The book comes out during the centennial year of my grandfather’s birth. He was born in Dec. 1917 in Carbon County, Utah. My hero and my inspiration for this very book.

I just can’t stop smiling at the chance to honor my late grandfather with a story written by his third generation Greek American granddaughter who was inspired by his roots grown a century ago.

If only he could be here now. But I know he’s smiling, too.

A century.

It took a CENTURY.

Only by God’s grace, and His perfect timing.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Love’s Thankful Heart is complied of three different storie that center around thankfulness and Thanksgiving. Each story is short, making it easy to read each one in a setting.

GINGERBREAD WISHES

The first story, Gingerbread Wishes, by Laura V. Hilton takes us back to some of the characters in Ms. Hilton’s new Christmas novel, The Christmas Admirer. Beca Troyer and Yost Miller we sort of friends in that book, but we have their own story in Gingerbread Wishes. Becca is at the Farmer’s Market trying to sell the over abundance of squash and pumpkins from their garden when a clown comes through, singles Becca out and gives her a toy ring and proposes to her. Of course Becca didn’t know who it was, but she could hope! Later in the day Yost shows up and helps load the produce and offers to take some home to his mom. Spending time together draws the two closer. Will they make things work between them?

Laura Hilton is such an awesome Writer of Amish fiction! I have enjoyed all of her books so far, as I did this story. I appreciate how she deals with shyness, pimples, tall lanky guys, and makes something beautiful out of those who struggle with these issues. This is a good clean Amish romance that any teenage girl would enjoy. Or any adult as well! I encourage you to pick up this book for yourself!

THANKSGIVING STRANGERS

Thanksgiving Strangers by Rachel J. Good is the second story in this book, and the longest. But it is still short enough to read in no more than two settings. Faithe Beiler and her mom own an Amish restaurant the gives free meals and coffee away to people walking in off the streets. When Faithe reaches out to Crist Petershiem the attraction between the two was for sure and for certain strong! But Crist had to stay away from the restaurant, yet something kept pulling him there. But there was no way he could even think about a relationship with all of his problems!

There is something about Crist that I really liked from the beginning. He was backwards, and a little mysterious, but this did phase Faithe. She seemed to see right through to his heart. And Faithe was a very special young lady. I loved her giving heart and her willingness to do what she felt the Lord wanted of her, no matter the dangers. Another really good read from this collection.

It was when his girl, Rosemary and her family organized a frolic to help Amish families who needed help that changed things for Monroe and Rosemary. Monroe’s dad wanted Monroe to have nothing to do with the frolic, nor did Monroe. But then the accident happens. Did this change the Heart of Monroe?

For me, this story started out slower than the first two. But as the story unfolds, the characters come to life, and it ends up being a nice story. The attitude of Monroe’s family is sadly like some today. They couldn’t see beyond their wants enough to help others in need. But the story does take a few twists, and the wisdom and love of Rosemary’s grandfather will encourage not only the characters but the readers in this beautiful story.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

Mary Davies was offered a trio of a lifetime, a trip to England, that she turns down flat. But her friend Isabella had other ideas, bringing Mary’s dad in on trying to convince her friend to go. And the story gets interesting when her friend Isabella loses her memory, believing she is living in Jane Austen’s bath.

The Austen Escape is a light, clean read, though  I’m not sure it is Christian fiction, but it is one that I enjoyed because it was clean. The characters were quirky, and developed well thoughout the book. This story started off a bit slow for me, it picks up as it moves on. There were some twists and turns to the story, with Mary and Isabella dealing with their own life issues, and wondering what would happen to them and their relationship.

All in all, if you want a clean, light, fun and enjoyable read, this is a book you may enjoy reading. I encourage you to give it a try! This book was given to me by the through TLC Blog Tour. I was not required to write a review of this book. I chose to write this review, and the opinions are mine alone!

My Thought On This Book 

In Pockets of Joy, author Roxane Battle shares the story of her divorce and the struggles he had to face as a single mom. Her words are from the debts of her heart, and you can feel the anguish she is feeling as you read her story.     Life wasn’t easy, the choices she made to give up her job in broadcasting, and her life was completely turned around.

Maybe this is you. Maybe you need this book because you can relate to what this author is saying and struggling just as much. There is no way I can describe this book adequately,  you have to read it for yourself.  It if you are struggling with any issues in your life that is bringing you down, totally controlling you, you need to read this book! I highly recommend Pokets of Joy to everyone. We can all find something in this book that can help out walk with the Lord. So pick up your copy today.

What this book is about is the season in my life when I was on my own and overwhelmed with trying to put my life back together while I learned how to raise a child and navigate a demanding television

career. A working, divorced single mom. That was me. For years.

There were many days when I smiled in front of the camera and cried alone at night. During those years, my time in the wilderness, I learned a lot about myself.

I am now at a point when I am able, willing, and desire to share the very personal and intimate stories of how I found peace in the midst of my struggles. I discovered what I call pockets. Pockets of joy. The kind of joy that causes your eyes to mist and wash over the hurt. The kind of joy that catches you by surprise and for a moment makes you forget, if ever so briefly, that you ever felt pain. The kind of joy that, in some ways, cannot even be described.

It is my hope and prayer my story will enable others to grasp a piece of the kind of joy I’m talking about and allow it to stir the kind of hope within that can renew and transform.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BIBLE

I really like this Apologetic Study Bible is a great addition to my Bible Study tools. It helps be to understand how the Bible and science can work together. And it helps to strengthen my faith because it proves what I believe with facts and It answers question on why people say the Bible contradicts itself.

There are many tools in this Bible that are so helpful, but to me all of the many articles were interesting to me and in these wide range of articles I am still reading and learning more than I ever imagined from this Bible. These articles were written by the most well know apologist, theologians and scholars, many names you will surely recognize.

Oh and I can’t forget to mention the twisted scripture explanations that explain verses that are misused by so many people. And I can go on and on about the many other tools that have already been helpful to me, and will continue to help in my knowledge of the scriptures.
