MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

Katrinia was determined to marry the man she loved so much, no matter what her mother said. But she never dreamed that being a pastors wife in a little town she knew nothing about would be so difficult. It seemed everything she did was wrong, and there were certainly enough people in the church to let her know she is wrong. And enough gossips to spread the word around to everyone who would listen. But the worse part was giving up her violin and the symphony she so loved. That is until one of the church ladies decided Katrina needed voice lessons and her nephew, the music teacher at the local high school was just to person to give Katrina lessons. But was their music sessions more than just voice?

For me, I had a difficult time getting into this book, but it ends up being a very good read. But then the story just ended, too fast for me. Maybe there is a second book in the series that will answer unfinished questions and scenes that were missing the end.

My heart went out to Katrina because of the way the church members treated she and her husband. They had no privacy at all, church members just came and went anytime they saw fit. And when the music teacher comes along, Katrina finally has a chance to be the person she use to be. But at a cost that was too much. I appreciate that author Alana Terry tackles an issue such as the private lives of pastors and their wives, and especially when they are new couples and new to the live of a pastor. I would imagine it could be very difficult at times and Ms. Terry shows the difficult side of this situation. It made me think a lot about how we should treat our pastors wives with the respect they deserve. I would love to read another book about this couple. And this is an interesting and clean Christian fiction that would benefit many people.

I used to think being a pastor’s wife would be glamorous. Now I know better!

Although I’ve loved the different churches where my husband has been called to serve, being a couple in full-time ministry can definitely take its toll on a marriage.

Breath of Heaven is a novel in my Orchard Grove Christian women’s fiction series, which deals with real-life couples facing real-life issues. In Breath of Heaven, two newlyweds are thrown into the world of church politics, and the honeymoon period is quickly over.

I wrote this novel to give an inside peek at what it’s like if you’ve never been a pastor’s wife as well as to offer some hope and encouragement to women who know the stress of being married to someone in full-time ministry.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

I just finished reading Rachel Hauck’s ‘The Love Letter’ and all I can say is WOW! Both the historical story and the modern day one was fabulous! I didn’t want this book to end. Chole and Jesse are the two main modern day characters and Hamleton and Esther are their historical characters, all of which are amazing. The mystery of the unfinished Love Letter written by Jesse Gates’ many times over grandfather is what inspires Jesse to write the screenplay because he wanted to give his historical family members an ending to their love story. All four of these characters have many life issues to deal with, and especially Chloe and Jesse. It was heartwarming how these two modern characters just happened to meet and hit it off from the beginning.

Not only was the lives of these characters interesting, I was totally involved in what goes on in the making of a hit Hollywood movie. From the screenplay to choosing the characters, from the filming to the twists and turns that can happen in the film making arena, it was all something I have never read about and was totally engrossed in the details! Now I am wondering what Is coming next from Author Rachel Hauck to top this one!

This is a story that will be of interest to everyone.  It’s a fantastic and entertaining clean book that young and old alike can read and enjoy. I’m always looking for story ideas. My husband does a standard disclaimer when I start drilling into a conversation with questions like:

”Really? So why did you do that?”

”Have you sought help?”

”Was it love at first sight?”

Hubster says, “Warning, anything you say can end up in a book.”

Of course, stories abound! Interesting people abound!

Then again, sometimes ideas just hit out of the blue. A few years ago I had the idea of a young, contemporary couple meeting by “accident” only to learn that their great grandparents were in love but time, life, family, war, or society made their love impossible.

I suppose there are a hundred ways to tell such a story but when it came time to write The Love Letter, I was slightly infatuated with the Poldark series on PBS.

Set in 18th century Cornwall, the story and the characters were so dynamic I had to write my own version of Poldark.

But could I write a split time with a 240 year difference? I mean, they didn’t have electricity or phones in 1780! They didn’t even have a postal system. Letters were carried by traveling friends or family.

What possible conflicts could my historical characters face? What event could be so dark and tragic to keep them apart?

The Revolutionary War created a perfect backdrop for my young lovers.

I set the story in upcountry South Carolina not realizing the battle I chose for the back drop, the Battle of Cowpens, was the inspiration for the movie The Patriot. (A fav movie of mine!)

For the contemporary story, I started with shoes. I mean, doesn’t every thing start with shoes?

”Nice outfit but what shoes are you wearing?”

”You’re going on a date? You need new shoes.”

What we “walk in” can either empower or defeat us. There’s a spiritual metaphor I’ll mediate on for awhile.

However the shoe angle didn’t quite work so the contemporary story ended up in Hollywood with an actor/screenwriter and an actress.

Both worlds—1780 upcountry South Carolina and contemporary Hollywood—were a bit out of my southern bailiwick.

I did a lot of research on the war and the colonial south. Where I couldn’t find details, I filled in with my imagination.

As for Hollywood, I talked with a screenwriter friend, read books, watched interviews, and then, you know, made the rest up. Don’t you know I eventually ended up on a movie set—Once Upon A Prince—four days after I finished reading the galley proofs for The Love Letter!

One of the hardest parts of the story was the actual love letter. What did it say? Who wrote it and why? Was there more than one? No, only one. But why only one?

I must have written and rewritten the letter five different ways to Sunday before I settled on the magical one.

During the course of the book, I realized I’d never written a love letter. Have you?

I’ve written sentiments to my husband on an anniversary or birthday card. I speak my love and affection out loud all the time. But a bonafide love letter?

A love letter is it’s own art form. They range from sickly sweet with a lot of “darlings” and “sweethearts” to Shakespearean sonnets.

There’s a vulnerability that comes with writing a love letter. Putting one’s heart on the page creates a new level of commitment with your affections.

Will the reader receive your words? Will the reader respond in kind?

It’s fascinating to consider the purpose of a love letter. Have we lost something intrinsic to the human heart with our instant texting and email society.

Can you imagine Romeo texting to Juliet in 2018?

Saw you at your window. You looked hot.

Doesn’t quite have the same ring as: “But soft! what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east and Juliet is the sun.”

Scripture is a continuous love letter. “For God so loved the world—”

Whether you write love letters or poems, or quick texts, or put XO’s on cards to loved ones, write a love letter this month.

Write one to yourself, to Jesus, a spouse, child, parent, friend, foe—

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

 Another wonderful retelling of a fairytale by Melanie Dickerson. Starting ibis hometown, the Holy Land, Aladdin grew up pretty much alone. In the Kingdom of Hagenheim, Aladdin met his best friend Kirstyn, daughter of  the Duke of Hagenheim, the patroness of the orphanage where Aladdin lives. But Kirstyn is so far out of Aladdin’s league because she is the  member of the most powerful family in the land. But that’s didnt stop the friendship between the two. But as time goes on, Aladdin must move on and prove himself my making his fortunes on his own, without the help of famous men, bringing their friendship as it was to an end. Or was it an end?

I love the twists this author does with this fairy tale making it a most interesting and fun book to read. I love the characters Kirstyn and Aladdin, though I did get annoyed at Aladdin at times because he kept moving on, farther from the one person who loved him for who he was. And I just couldn’t blame Kirstyn for being angry at him near the end of the story for coming back to Hagenheim and not contacting her. But even though these two characters didn’t spend a lot of time together, the chemistry was there between them. And they both loved each other even though they didn’t always know where each were. They were. Oth Strong and determined characters, which is why the wonderful ending of this story. I can’t wait for the next fairytale y Ms. Dickerson!

If you want a book for your young tween or teen to read, The Orphan’s Wish would be a wonderful book. It’s a fairytale with Biblical meaning, with the characters references to their relationship with the Lord and quoting scripture that carried them through their issues .

Elsie’s willing to do whatever it takes to get that piece of property, and she determined to keep it, but she wasn’t planning on a kind, handsome preacher standing in her way.

Her bitterness is what protects her, and she has not intentions of allowing that preacher to lay claim to her land … or her heart.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

Elmer (Elsie) Smith And Benjamin David were among the many people in the 1893 great race for claiming land on the Cherokee Strip Land Run. Trouble was, they both won the same plot of land, and neither of them was going to give their land up because this is what they both have dreamed about. So the only option is to both live on the same plot of land until the authorities can come up with a solution, which will take 6 months. Who will win out on this piece of property?

What a fun and interesting story! I loved the two main characters, Elsie (for even though she was playing the part of a man, her cover was soon found out), and Pastor Ben. This story had me laughing at times and then at times it was heartwarming by the way Ben and Elsie wanted to make sure each other was ok! And spending so much time together brought feelings that neither or them was about to address! I also enjoyed the history in this story, it goes way back to times when living in sod houses was ok because that was all some could afford. And this little community that has formed here very quickly became friends and willing to help each other. There were many hurdles to overcome, but as a community, they faced them together. It was heartwarming to see the love and the bond they formed so quickly.

This is a great book for you history people out there, but it’s also a good clean one for anyone to read!! A  copy of this book was provided by Celebration Lit Tours and the author for me to read and review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions in this review are mine only.

The Heart of a Book

 

I think there’s always a little bit of the author in each book they write, but sometimes something deeper and very close to the author is wrapped up in the pages of a story. That’s the case for To Claim Her Heart. This is the tale that my mother-in-law always wanted me to write. She was so proud of her family heritage and almost twenty years ago, she was anxious to share it with me. We visited Oklahoma where several of her relatives had staked claims in the last great race for land in our country – the Cherokee Strip Land Run of 1893. This September will mark the 125th anniversary of the land race.

 

While it saddens me that my dear mother-in-law never lived long enough to see this story in print, I’m thankful that she shared her rich heritage with me. In To Claim Her Heart I was able to mention a recipe passed down through her family for prune cake. I also made sure the heroine had a Rose of Sharon quilt that was given to her. My mother-in-law gave me this quilt dating back as early as 1834 when it was stitched by my husband’s great, great, great, great grandmother. It’s been passed down to the oldest daughter for generations. But, I think one of my favorite memories is the one that concerns outlaws and how my husband’s great, great, great grandmother dealt with them. To find out more about this actual encounter, you’ll have to read To Claim Her Heart. I hope your heart will be as touched by these stories as mine was when my mother-in-law shared them.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

I loved this book. So much so that I hated having to put it down for the non important things such as cleaning house or cooking dinner! Just Let Go was so realistic, so much like people everywhere today. And I love the Title because letting go and Letting God in on our problems would be so much easier than trying to fix them ourselves.

Quinn and Brady both had so many issues to fight through. But first they have to like each other because they didn’t get off to a very good start. Both had anger issues caused by heir past and they just didn’t want to let the past go. Would a real relationship work for the two?

Along with my love of  story, the characters are fantastic and they make the story so much  more  interesting. Ms. Walsh deals with a lot issuess that so many people face today, it’s  hard to pinpoint just one.  And the plot flows so smoothly. I appreciate that this book is full of love and redemption, caring and loving people. This is an amazing Contemporary Fiction for anyone looking for a good clean fun read.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

Wow! Where to start! This is such a well written story! I had a hard time putting this book down at times, and at other times there was so much to take in, I had to put it down to for the storyline to sink in. When a story involves Indians, warriors, war and fighting will happen and sometimes that’s difficult stuff to read, but it’s the nature of the people.

Elias and Mercy’s story is one that will stay with me for a long time. The trip to take the load of gold was more of a trip than any one then expected. And the greedy people wanting their hands on the gold would do anything, even murder to make sure the gold was theirs. But Elias, Matthew and Mercy were true scouts, who knew every inch of the land, and they were hard to fool. What happens on this trip with the gold is a journey that will have you on the edge of your seats throughout the story. I don’t know where to start telling anything else about the book because it will ruin it for you who read this review. And I hate a ruined plot! So I’ll just say, this is a book you must read, if you enjoy this type of story! With this type of characters! You will be glad you choose this book to read!

A Visit to Fort Niagara

Whether you’re a history buff or don’t have a clue what the French and Indian War was about, there’s a destination in upstate New York that’s fun to visit for the whole family . . .

My husband and I made the trek to this living history site last summer. I had no idea what to expect, other than what was advertised as a “reenactment camp.” For those who don’t know, this is when volunteers who adore history come together to present a particular event, such as a battle. These people usually choose a real person from the era upon whom they fashion their modern day persona. They dress, speak, eat and live as that person might have. Here I am with some of my new friends:

Generally around the 4^th of July, the 1759 Battle of Fort Niagara is recreated in a 3-day extravaganza of soldiers, muskets, canons and an entire market place to peruse selling period-related items.

Some of the things that surprised me about stepping back into the mid-eighteenth century were:

• How much smoke muskets kick out
• Once the battle begins, it’s hard to see who is your enemy or ally
• Canons are really loud
• Everything wasn’t as black and white as it seems in pictures—gowns and uniforms were very colorful

What makes this event so spectacular is that they take the entire 20 day siege and condense it into 3 days. If you visit every day, you’ll see and experience exactly what happened. You’ll be there to see the British, Colonial regulars and Iroquois allies sneak out of the tree line to shoot at some French soldiers who were pigeon hunting just outside the fort. You’ll hear the war whoops and barrage of angry French epithets roaring on the air. You’ll even get a chance to taste some of their food as you wander around inside the French Encampment set up inside the fort walls.

To experience a bit of the danger, sights and sounds of what Mercy and Elias lived through in The Captured Bride, Fort Niagara really is a fantastic place to visit.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

When Joseph Malcom was ask my the local priest to go bring his cousin to him to help with the ministry, Joseph certainly wasn’t thinking about the pretty woman he found at the post. Monti Bergeron had no family except her cousin ministering to the local Indians and it was her choice to sell her mothers business in order to fulfill that dream. But she wasn’t sure what she was walking into, and Joseph made up his mind to protect her. But then their feelings got in the way and the tension was far to much for Joseph to bare. His injury left him less than a man, and he couldn’t provide for a woman and family.

This is a beautiful story that captures my attention very early in the story! My heart went out to Joseph because he was so determined to keep his lame hand hidden under a glove to keep everyone from knowing about his damaged his hand. And the story surrounding the way Monti found out about his hand was heartwarming. This is a story set in times that it’s not so easy to live life. There were very few people on the land except Indians and the process of the whites and Indians respecting each other was not an easy one either. I love the way Ms. Beller weaves the characters together with the harsh living conditions and the Indian population together to give readers such a heartwarming story. Each scene was vividly described in detail pulling me into the story throughout the book. For me, this book just ended too soon! I’ve got my eve out for another book in this series!

The Frontier Cook

I love to write frontier romance, where the challenges were tough and the people had to be even tougher. And one of the things I love to imagine is how my characters cooked during those days.

Can you imagine how hard it would be to cook over an open fire? Every. Single. Meal. Of course, it’s not like they had a lot of variety to work with. Once you learned how to make a decent stew or corn mush, you didn’t have much to worry about, right?

Yet, many of the frontier women became quite adept at cooking over their cabin’s hearth, or even over an open campfire. In my new book, This Wilderness Journey, Monti (the heroine) came from a middle-class home with a paid chef and never had to learn to cook at all, much less without the use of a wood stove (which is still so much harder than heating a hot-pocket in the microwave). After she burned the corn mush their first night on the trail through the Canadian wilderness, Joseph (the hero) taught her a few basic meals.

As I was researching some creative ways frontier women cooked in an open hearth, I discovered the wide use of puddings, mostly because of how easy they were to make. By wrapping the ingredients in a cloth or pudding bag, they could be dropped in a pot of boiling water and left until the ingredients had softened and expanded. An entire meal could be made with a few ingredients, a pudding cloth, and a pot of boiling water.

One of my favorite cooking scenes in This Wilderness Journey is the making of the Oatmeal Pudding. What do you think? Sound like something you’d like to try?

The Pirate Bride……..Finding herself on a pirate ship, or so she thought, Maribel Cordoba did everything she must do to talk the captain into giving her a job and part of his crew. An Maribel could talk, and talk, to the place it was annoying. But she grew on the crew and they found themselves responsible for her. I really liked and enjoyed this story. I fell in love with the two children, Maribel and William that were on the ship. Two very intelligent kids that were more than able to take care of themselves.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

I just can’t give this book 5 stars, though the writing was really good, it just wasn’t there for me. The characters, plot, in both the lives of the characters and the book Melanie was writing was all over the place.

I found a lot of quotes, and things that helped me deal with some things I’ve been ignoring for a long time. Dr. Elliot has some really good advice for Chloe, advice to take to heart. And Melanie did that. I would have like to have read more about Melanie discussing their problems and what brought them to the place they were in the end. But all in all, this is a very good read. One that can be of help someone who harbors guilt or grief, or both in their lives. This is my first book by author Ginny Yttrup and I will be checking out her other books, and I trust you will as well. I rec’d a copy of this book for free for a book club read. MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

Room on the Porch Swing is one of those books that you just don’t want to end! I love all of Amy Clipston’s Books and they all keep getting better! In this story, Laura’s best friend Savilla passes away leaving her husband Allen with a young baby to care for. After Allen’s mother fell and broke her leg, he was desperate for someone to watch his Mollie, so Laura offers to help him care for his baby. But what would Laura’s beau, Rudy think of this?

This story deals with a lot of issues, there’s Savilla’s death leaving a young husband and baby to deal with her passing at a young age, Allen’s moms injury that again affect Allen because his mom was running his house while he worked, then there was Rudy, Laura’s jealous beau that also use to be Allen’s best friend, and then there is the growing attraction between Allen and Laura because they spend so much time together.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The characters are beginning to feel like family, and I can’t wait to read the next book! Laura’s sweet personality is what Allen and Mollie need, though things got pretty touchy with Rudy when Laura started staying overnight and sleeping in Mollie’s room, but what boyfriend wouldn’t be upset at that! And how will author Amy Clipston weave all of these issues together and come up with an encouraging and likeable ending? Well, that’s what you will find out when you read this really well written Amish story! I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting a good clean read, and especially those who love Amish fiction!

But he is torn between doing the will of God or listening to everyone else, especially the love of his life, Hannah. David and Hannah have been sweethearts since childhood and someday they hope to marry. But will Hannah be willing to follow where the Lord is leading David?

He fun thing about reading this book is that the setting in in the 1960-1970’s and I was a teen during that time. It was fun reading about the culture of that time. I liked David, he was a kind and caring person and I appreciated his willingness to follow God’s leading. Hannah came across to me as a spoiled brat, getting mad and pouting every time she didn’t get her way. Her personality was so wishy-washy, one minute she was mad and fussing at David about his decisions and the next, following along with him. It was difficult to keep up with her. But I kept reminding myself that she was only a young teenager and that’s how they act! The story was a sweet and heartwarming story with characters that played their parts well throughout the story.

This is a light read, one you can just pick up and enjoy where you left off. Staunch Church of Christ believers, his mother’s parents took in the baby while her guilt took her to Dallas and eventually France to oversee the care of her mentally deranged husband Harry Prescott. So David grew up in the Texas Hill Country, well loved and cared for, with his mother visiting as often as she can.

David’s paternal grandfather, Nathaniel Nightingale (from Texas Romance’s book eight and nine COVERING LOVE and MIGHTY TO SAVE)—once a famous tent preacher with a healing ministry—has been close, quitting the road to pastor a nearby Holiness Church. As David grows, he sees him occasionally when his father Buddy visits from Alabama and Gramps always came to watch him play sports.

From a long line of people who love the Lord, I thought to write a trilogy titled THE REVIVALIST. JOHN DAVID’S CALLING is book one.

At fourteen years of age, David stepped in to rescue a little third grader being bullied and instantly became her hero. As Hannah Claire grew, doting on him, making him gifts and cards, swooning, she won him over, and PawPaw allowed him to visit her church one Sunday a month.

The second book in the Trilogy will be HANNAH’S WILDERNESS, and then I’ll wrap up their stories with book three, KING DAVID’S TABERNACLE.

I’ve so enjoyed these characters—the Buckmeyers, Baylors, and Nightingales—I find it hard put them on the shelf. They’re like family. I’ve even got one story started that’s a contemporary called THE KING OF TEXAS, with Patrick Henry the III as hero.

As all are written to stand alone, it’s never necessary for readers to know all the ancestors to enjoy JOHN DAVID’S CALLING or any of the series really—though I’m pretty certain reading the Family Saga in order would be the best! So if you love David’s book, you might want to go back to VOW UNBROKEN, book one and read all ten. I think you’re sure to love them all!

One thing I love about this JOHN DAVID’S CALLING is that it takes place in my days. I graduated high school in 1968, same as David, so he lives through the same times as me! That’s really been fun. But I must say I do resent it being called a historical a little J LOL

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

I AM MY BELOVED

For some reason it took me a while to get into this book. I know being a Biblical Fiction it’s not going to have the thrills and chills of other books, but it just started off show for me. But it does get more interesting as I followed the more mature teenager, Abishag as she is called by King David, and goes and marries the elderly King, and then later after the King passed away is called to the new king, King Solomon.

There are many things in this story that is heartwarming for me. One is the breathtaking beauty of Abishag. She sure made a beautiful Queen as she took King David as her husband. I loved her deep love for her husband and also the way she would lay down with him to keep him warm. Nothing sexual at all, just a tender moment. Another touching thing is the way Bathsheba takes Abishag in after Kind David passed away, helping her in her grief, and befriending her and being the mother figure Abishag needed at the time. I also loved how Abishag was so willing to follow the Lord, no matter what He ask if her. No matter what it cost her. And this touched my heart as well, because I ask myself, would I be willing to give up everything to do what God ask of me? There are many things we can learn from this young teenage girl.

Ms. McAdoo does a beautiful job of weaving the lives of these Biblical characters together to help us better understand this portion of the Bible. And to give us and idea of what Abishag’s life may have been like. A  copy of this book was provided by Celebration Lit Tours and the author for me to read and review. I AM My Beloved is a story unlike any I’ve ever written in that it moved me so. Not saying all my stories don’t move me, they do—to tears and laughter. Just today I got all teary writing a scene in my WIP for next September. But I AM My Beloved moved me to worship. I literally would stop typing, bask in God’s presence, and worship.

I believe that it is anointed and of course, as always, pray it will give God glory. I pray that His children will be blessed and drawn closer to the Father reading it. It’s a romance, yes, but nothing like any proverbial historical romances you’ve ever read.

It’s the story of Abishag. Have you ever heard of her? Her name is mentioned only five times in the Bible, all in 1Kings. “So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the king.” Kings 1:3 They brought her to King David. To keep him warm during his dying days.

Scripture tells us the she cherished David, and also that he never knew her—his virgin queen. You’ll love her heart, creativity, attitudes, intelligence, and spirit of submission. It’s like all God’s beloved daughters can identify with her. Writing her story was akin to writing a love letter to Jesus. So often, it was Him and me, not these characters of olden days brought to life in I AM My Beloved.

This love story of what happens to Abishag after David’s death when Solomon, heir to the Throne becomes King of Israel. And perhaps, you’ll get a whole new take on the wisest man ever to live, as he takes on building the Temple of God, foreign wives, follows after their gods, then returns to serve the One True God and write Ecclesiastes and the Song of Solomon.

At its end, is a section I call “Search the Scriptures” that point out and explain the clues that led to its writing. I hope you’ll enjoy it!
