MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Kate Mallory is pretty much left with nothing concrete in her life after her mom was killed in a horrific car accident. Having to do a job no one wants, cleaning out her mom’s stuff, Kate finds and old love letter. Could this possibly be her dad? The dad mom refused to tell her about? This sent Kate on a journey to see the person who sent the letter, William Wheaton of Bell Buckle, Tennessee. Just what would Kate find in Tennessee?

This is such a wonderful book. My heart hurt for Kate as she tries to find a dad she has wondered about all her life. It wasn’t as easy as she hoped it would be. Kate applies for a job that just happens to be the Wheaton family restaurant. Noah is immediately suspicious of her because he doesn’t trust women so much. But you really need to read this Novella to find out more, and find out if Kate is on the right track to finding her long lost dad. It’s really a quick wonderful read. I highly encourage you to check this one out. I am happy to give A Sojourner’s Solace Five Stars.

I grew up with three sisters and a brother, and although life could be chaotic and a little crowded, I can’t imagine any other childhood. We spent summers camping with my grandparents and great uncles, and holidays with lots of cousins, aunts, and uncles. Being part of a large family was central to my life. I thought about this as I created the Wheaton family for my Bedford County summer novella. Four siblings—two sons and two daughters—who often rub each other the wrong way, but at the same time, would lay down their lives for one another.

Noah is the oldest sibling in the Wheaton clan—retired military who’s been badly burned by a woman in the past. Trust doesn’t come easy, and he’s as loyal to his family as they come. Born and raised in the small Middle Tennessee town of Bell Buckle, he’s not a fan of the big city—or of people from the big city. His family owns and operates a restaurant in a nearby town where everybody knows everybody. He’s suspicious of outsiders, especially those of the female persuasion.

And that’s where our heroine, Kate Mallory, comes in. A native New Yorker, raised by a single mother, she never knew who her father was. She arrives in Bell Buckle on a quest to find what she’s missed all her life—family. What she discovers is far more than she bargained for, and her mother’s words come back to haunt her—“Be careful what you wish for.”

You may wonder why I chose New York City for Kate’s upbringing. My son lived in Tokyo for five years—a city of almost 14 million people. He told me on several occasions that living there, he never felt more alone or isolated. I wanted Kate in A Sojourner’s Solace to experience the same thing. Plopped into Middle Tennessee, she discovers a world as foreign to her as Tokyo was to my son—just in the opposite way.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

In Wish Upon a Star, Jennifer Sienes gives readers a very beautiful story of how we can learn to trust people, even though it is very difficult. I love this story and love following Ryan and Elaina, and especially Eliana and all of her struggles. Ryan was a sweetheart and perfect for Eliana, even though it took her a while. The author does such a fabulous job dealing with such sensitive and harsh realities, and does it in a way it doesn’t defend, but brings those involved closer to the Lord. I love how Jennifer Sienes weaves the Christian life into her characters, and in this case shows that God can forgive and He is the giver of second chances. I didn’t read the previous book with some of these characters but I didn’t have a problem reading this one as a stand alone. If you enjoy a good clean story of love and forgiveness, this is one you don’t want to pass up.

Do you remember what Christmas was like as a child? I do. Some of my fondest memories come that holiday when I was growing up. There was a deep sense of family and tradition that I desperately wanted to instill in my own children. No small part of that was the innocence that came from being protected by the harsh realities of life. I envisioned growing old with the grands and great-grands gathered around a Christmas tree bursting with ornaments and sharing the customary Christmas dinner.

My future didn’t quite pan out the way I’d envisioned it. What was it John Lennon said? “Life is what happens when you’re busy making plans.” Or if you want to keep with the Biblical viewpoint: In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps (Proverbs 16:9)

Although my innocence went by the wayside as I became an adult, I held onto that dream until the Christmas morning my first husband announced he was leaving me. It was then I surrendered my life to Jesus Christ. He anchored me in the following months along with my full-time teaching job, two teenage children, and a mother who was dying of leukemia. It wasn’t until October rolled around when my then seventeen-year-old son burst into my bedroom early one morning and said, “I just realized, Christmas will never be the same” that it hit me. I wasn’t the only one affected. For him, the dream died much too early. He was right—when splitting time between divorced parents, things get rather disjointed and complicated. Christmas was never the same for any of us.

But our God is a God of redemption. He takes our brokenness and disappointments and uses them for our good and His glory. Wish Upon A Star isn’t the traditional Christmas story you might find on the Hallmark channel. It’s about a broken family in need of a merciful Savior, and one woman in need of a white knight.

Just like Elaina Hensley, the main character, God had a more perfect plan for my life, too. Without the brokenness we cannot be made whole through Him to be who He calls us to be. In the years since that fateful Christmas morning, He’s given me my own white knight, a godly husband who loves to serve, and the opportunity to follow another childhood dream—to write the stories He’s laid on my heart.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

This is my first read from author Jennifer Sienes and I enjoyed it much. Faith just can’t get over her past, and uses her flower arranging to help cope with the hurts she has faced. When her sister ask Faith to be her wedding planner, she tried everything to get put of it but it seems everyone else is in agreement that she should help her sister out. She was not expecting how it out turned out for her good.

Jennifer Sienes does a very nice job of creating likeable characters that develop well as the story unfolds. Faith was a flawed character with a tough background, and maybe that’s why I like her so well. And I enjoyed the interactions between she and Michael. I love how God brought these two together. And even though this is fiction, the same thing happens in real life all of the time. I love and appreciate how Sienes weaves faith into the lives of her characters, and how she shows love, faith, forgiveness and redemption through our Lord.

I enjoyed this story so much, it is the first I have read from the Apple Hill series, and now I’ll go back and read the others as well. But I will say that Saving Faith reads ok as a stand alone. If you haven’t read any books by Jennifer Sienes, this sweet romance is a great book to start with. And don’t forget to check out the other books in the Apple Hill series. I give Saving Faith Four Stars. Hurry put and get your copy.

Where does inspiration come from? When I wrote Illusions and Providence (books 2 and 3 of my Apple Hill series) it came from real-life tragedies I’d lived through. The characters and stories were pure fiction, but the inspiration was heartfelt and dark—just where I needed my emotions to be in order to write redemption stories. When I wrote Surrendered (Book 1) in the series, the inspiration came from one character that was eventually deleted in the second draft of Providence. Are you confused yet? Just to set the record straight, although Surrendered was the first book published in the series, it was the last one I wrote. Why they were published in the order they were is unimportant.

Saving Faith is unlike any other book I’ve written. It was the first novella I wrote in the series, although it isn’t the first to be published (are you sensing a pattern?) I’ve since written two Christmas novellas, both based on side characters introduced in my novels. All That Glitters released last November starring two characters from Surrendered—Julia and Marty. Wish Upon a Star will release this coming November, and the main characters are Elaina and Ryan from Providence.

But the characters in Saving Faith were created from thin air. Well, mostly. Although Addie Jacobs is a side character, she was inspired by a little girl in my Sunday School class—adorable, precocious, intelligent, and headstrong. Once I had her in place, the rest of the novella came together. It was also the first book I’ve written without plotting it out in advance, which was quite disconcerting for a control-freak like me. It was as if the Holy Spirit introduced me to the story as I wrote it. I’ve heard of those pantsers (they write by the seat of their pants rather than outline the plot), but until Saving Faith, I’ve never been successful at winging it. To be perfectly honest, I wasn’t the main writer; I was just the co-pilot. I believe the story of Faith, Michael, Chloe, and Addie is better for it.

Another first for me was writing a story where romance was the main genre. I write women’s fiction with an element of romance. But Saving Faith is a romance with an element of women’s fiction. This set the bar for my other novellas. It’s these shorter books that allow me to delve into the world of romance, although it’s not the typical boy-meets-girl kind of story. It’s more boy-knows-girl and loves her anyway kind of story. Because truth be told, none of us are loveable without the redemptive work of Jesus Christ.
