MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

This interesting and descriptive story takes place in the early 1940’s through to 2026, and is set in several different areas, the Saskatchewan prairies, Olympia, Greece, and Canada’s West Coast. I really enjoyed traveling with the characters to each of these beautiful places. For Love and Mercy is a powerful story that will tug at my heart for a very long time.

I don’t know why but when I saw this book cover, I didn’t think so much about this being a family book. Don’t get me wrong the cover is stunning, a cover that I would go for first in a bookstore. For Love and Mercy is such a beautifully written story, a story that is so realistic it seems almost impossible that it’s fiction. With all of the twists and turns, it is surprising where the story takes us at times. Writing about all of the ups and downs, the issues of the human life isn’t always an easy task. Through her unique and realistic characters, Ms. Deringer takes readers through lots of different emotions, sometimes it was difficult for me to keep reading, other times I couldn’t put the book down. There was some hide humor sprinkled through that was enjoyable. All in all this is a really good read. I give For Love and Mercy Five Stars. This is a book that everyone should read. It is really that good!!

After Our Castle by Kellyn Roth

About the Book

Book: After Our Castle

Author: Kellyn Roth

Genre: Historical Women’s Fiction

Release date: October, 2022

MY RATING: FIVE STARS⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A year into a blissfully happy marriage, Violet Angel admits to a dose of skepticism. She’s not married, granted—but as the closest friend of the bride and groom, she feels she has a perspective no one but the people directly involved could have. There’s no such thing as a happy ending, and it’s only a matter of time before the castle in the sky plummets to earth.

If only Violet were always wrong instead of just mostly wrong. Ivy McAllen doesn’t believe she and her new husband are out of the honeymoon period—if they are, she isn’t going to admit it to herself—but there are certainly areas of adjustment that she hadn’t expected.

Changes at the village of Keefmore and in Ivy’s life lead to complications, and Violet spirals further and further from reality. When a castle in the sky turns to be more cloud than stronghold, finding a foothold proves to be more than a little difficult.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

After our Castle it a little different from the first five books in the series. Which, by the way is book 6 of an at least the 10 book Alice and Ivy series from Kellyn Roth. I did enjoy this series very much. Roth covers some pretty touchy subjects that some people may not appreciate but I understand why as I continued to read this book. I think these edgy issues is important to the book. Roth does a marvelous job writing this book, and creating characters that were so realistic. I enjoyed
Ivy and Jordy’s story. Roth takes their marriage and shows the ups and downs, but also their faith running throughout the book. The ending leaves you a little bit lost, but is Kellyn’s extras, it seems there will be a book to make this ending work for everyone. I encourage you to check out this book by Kellyn Roth. And while you are checking, checkout the other books in this series. This is a wonderful series to read and I highly recommend them.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Kellyn Roth is a historical romance & women’s fiction author who writes about the empty places where hope has the most room to grow. Her novels include the inspirational Victorian family saga, The Chronicles of Alice and Ivy, and the Kees & Colliers series, which follows a broken family in the tumultuous years of the first half of the 20th century.

Kellyn is a student of the Author Conservatory and a writing coach. When not building her author career, she is likely getting lost somewhere in the Pacific Northwest with her friends, watching period dramas and facetious comedies, or spending time with her husband.

More from Kellyn

After Our Castle was a book I didn’t think I would ever write. Oh, I considered writing a short story or two about the early years of Ivy and Jordy’s marriage, yes, but it wasn’t until last year that I decided that I would write a full-length novel.

Why did I hesitate? I’m writing a family saga, after all, and I plan on covering every stage of my characters’ lives in the 10+ books I’m planning (this being book 6). Well, I didn’t think there was anything to be discussed about Ivy and Jordy’s early married days, as there was with my other book couple, Alice and Peter. Nothing interesting, I thought, happens until 1890, eight years into their union. So why write about anything before then?

Then I realized just how much backstory I was packing into that book. And I realized that, for my writing style, there are so many little things that can add up into a book. And that became the story that is After Our Castle.

The novel wasn’t an easy one to write. It required a lot of subtlety and doesn’t precisely have the most perfect ending. But I knew, if I wanted to set up book 8, I would have to write the novel this way.

So here we go. Another book I wasn’t sure about–but that careful writing and even more careful editing, along with a lot of prayer, have turned into a story I’m actually rather proud of.

I hope you enjoy After Our Castle!

Reunion in Saltwater Beach by Julie Carobini

About the Book

Book: Reunion in Saltwater Beach

Author: Julie Carobini

Genre: Christian Romance

Release date: June 22, 2022

From the author of Walking on Sea Glass … He’s a big city lawyer. She’s the small town beach girl who broke his heart. Any hope for a second chance expired twelve years earlier …

Jax Cooper returns to Saltwater Beach but has no plans to stay any longer than necessary. Once his mother’s estate is wrapped up, he’ll be on a plane back to Chicago—and hopefully to a future as the youngest law partner in his firm.

Addi Barrett never left the small beach town of Saltwater. She chose instead to dote on her ailing mother, help her father’s business, and find new friendships in old places. That didn’t mean she never had dreams of her own …

When a Cooper family member goes missing, a foster dog needs some lovin’, and a long-hidden secret bubbles to the surface, Jax and Addi find themselves thrown together over and over again.

Can they find their way to a second chance at love? Or will past hurts rise up to make happily-ever-after impossible?

MY THOUGHTS THIS BOOK

I thoroughly enjoyed Reunion in Saltwater Beach by Julie Carobini. This book focuses on Jax and the Cooper Family. The family were all together for their mothers funeral. A lot of decisions had to be made among the family, and as they discussed these things, Jax was a little homesick because he realizes how much he has missed his family.

This fabulous addition to the beach series is comforting and interesting. I really like these wonderful characters Julie Carobini creates, and each has a special part in their family as well as this book. I felt like I was a part of the family as I read this book. I like Jax and especially after his times with his old flame Addi were spending more time together. Addi was a sweetheart as well. The author does an amazing job writing this book and I enjoyed the multitude of details that definitely came from a lot of research. I also love and appreciate the faith in the lives of the characters, especially showing that the characters should always put the Lord first in everything the do and depend on Him.

If you enjoy a good beach read that can really be read anytime and anywhere, this would be the perfect book for you to check out! This book is getting Five Stars from me.

More from Julie

Do you love a good secret? Me too. Some of my favorite books contain secrets just begging to be revealed. Add in a feel-good romance, some family drama, and a heaping dose of faith, and now we’re talking.

In Reunion in Saltwater Beach, Jax Cooper jetted away to college a dozen years earlier and rarely looked back. His best friend, Addi Barrett, stayed in the town of Saltwater, often wondering what might have been between the two of them. She also carried a secret she hoped never to revisit.

But that was before Jax returned home for his mother’s memorial. And his sister had a meltdown. And one of his brothers disappeared …

On a personal note, while writing this novel, I was unaware that my precious father would pass away just weeks before it released. Honestly, those months leading up to this story’s debut were … hard. But God!

I mention this because, during those last few weeks, my own brothers and I found ourselves talking on the phone or texting daily. Hourly at times. It was an intense time that brought us closer together as siblings—and showed our differences too.

Now I have an extra special place in my heart for the wild and wacky Cooper siblings. (Is it possible to feel a personal connection to a fictional family? Answer = yes )

Of course, I also found myself both fretting and rooting for Jax and Addi to, somehow, find their way to a second chance at love—despite the past that got in their way. And that’s no secret.

Thank you for stopping by. I appreciate you!

Julie

The Matchmakers of Holly Circle by Chautona Havig

About the Book

Book: The Matchmakers of Holly Circle

Author: Chautona Havig

Genre: Christian / Romance / Christmas

Release date: November 21, 2014

My Rating: Five Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

They’ve been in love for ten years, but it takes an interfering neighbor with a penchant for poker to unravel the mystery of their persistent platonic relationship.

Flirtation can be an art, or so they say. Well, if so, Ruth and Richard are “the old masters” of the flirting game. Despite their strictly platonic relationship, there’s “something there,” as so many of their friends and families say. Neighbors and friends for ten years, neither seems willing to change the course of their relationship.

Three doors down, at the end of the cul-de-sac, Mason Dickenson has watched his favorite neighbors with an interested eye, but he’s finally had it with the dance. So, with a pack of cards and a few tricks up his sleeve, he’s determined to get them out of the “friend rut” and into romance.

Thanks to Mason’s unique matchmaking scheme, Ruth and Richard concoct one of their own—a deeper, stronger, eternal love and relationship that nothing on earth can match.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

The Matchmakers of Holly Circle is about Ruth and Richard, two people who have been in a platonic relationship for ten years. It seems that everyone on their street knows they are in love except this duo. Finally, a gentleman a few doors down decides to beef up his matchmaking skills to show them their real feelings for each other. But does it work.

I love this beautiful and fun story, and it gets better the more you read. Chautona Havig does a fabulous job writing this sweet romance with a bit of underlying mystery. Mason’s matchmaking skills he uses are exceptional, and very intriguing. The entire story was so well written, the characters, some I really love and some I really didn’t, but we need them all to came the story more colorful and enjoyable. It’s truly a sweet Christmas story you are sure to want to read during the Christmas season. I am happy to give The Matchmakers of Holly Circle by Chautona Havig Five out of Five Stars.

Interview for Love Matters by Neil Tolsma

About the Book

Book: Love Matters

Author: Neil Tolsma

Genre: Non-Fiction

Release date: September 13, 2022

The Bible answers with one word: Love. What am I to do when my love is weak and in short supply? What difference does godly love make in the rush of everyday living? These are questions that Christians ask and need answered.

Love Matters answers these vital questions and others through a careful examination of what the Word of God has to say about reproducing God’s love in the exercise of personal faith. Love Matters is unique in developing this study of love in a redemptive-historical setting.

Love Matters is a biblical study of the divine call to love God and others wholeheartedly and the means by which the believer can overcome deficiencies in that call.

Interview with Author Neil Tolsma

1. How long does it take you to write a book?
including research, it took me six years to write me first book, This Is Love. Love Matters, took six years as well. This doesn’t count the years of preparation behind my considering the subject of love in the Bible. It commanded my attention in biblical study of the subject in preaching, teaching and counseling.

2. What do you like best about writing non-fiction?
it has been the joy of my life to serve the Lord as a pastor and preacher for over 50 years, and to take the knowledge I’ve gleaned and translating it into books that I pray are faithful to the Word of God and bring him glory. After all the chief end of man is to glorify God as the Westminster Shorter Catechism reminds us.

3. What do you hope readers will take away from this story?
Allow me to share a paragraph from the Introduction to my first book, “I pray that this book will enrich your understanding of the love of God… I pray that you will be fired up to read your Bible and read it with a new appreciation… I pray that the love of Christ may be reproduced in your own life. Jesus loved us to the uttermost and calls us to love one another as he has loved us. If you are a stranger to the grace and glory of the love of God, I pray, the by means of this book, God will open your heart to receive that love, so that you too may come to love him, and your neighbor, as Jesus love you.”

4. What is something memorable you have heard from your readers?
One day an unexpected letter came. In it a college coed wrote that my book, This Is Love, changed her life. It was one of several indications of the impact my book has had on my readers by the grace of God. He alone does wondrous things.

5. How do you make non-fiction interesting and engaging while still being informative and writing the facts?
Illustratins tha fit the narrative. I’ve been told by more than one reader how helpful the illustrations have been.

More from Neil

Why Another Book on Love

Walk into any bookstore, Christian or general market, big or small, and you’re sure to be inundated by books on love, both fiction and nonfiction. How to love your spouse or significant other. How to love your children. How to love yourself. Love, love, love. That’s all we seem to hear about today. Love in all its forms, both good and evil.

So, then, why would I write another nonfiction book on love? Aren’t there plenty to choose from already? Well, yes and no. There are many on the shelves. Have your pick. But how many of those talk about what real, biblical love is, why we are to love, and where our one and only source of love is?

So many people today don’t know what love truly is. We have romanticized versions of flowers, chocolates, and violins. We dream of being swept off our feet and spending every waking minute with someone who will cherish us above all else. One of the most popular sayings of the day is Love Is Love.

Is it really? How do we know what true love is? That understanding only comes from God and his word to us. Only through him and in him do we find pure, holy, agape love. Love that sacrificed his only Son for us to give eternal life to us sinners—the impure, unholy, and filthy.

And so that’s why I wrote Love Matters. Because it does. It matters to our lives today, in how we relate to our spouses, our children, our family members, and the world at large. It matters to our eternity in how we view our salvation and how we are to love our Lord. It matters when we’re old and when we’re young, when we’re at home and when we’re at work, when we agree with someone and when we disagree with them.

Throughout my fifty years of in-depth Bible study as a pastor and counselor, I was brought back time and time again to the Bible to discover what love is. Over and over, I returned to the command God gave in Exodus, that we are to love the Lord our God with all our hearts, souls, strength, and minds, and to love our neighbors as ourselves.

Because God is love and love matters to him, it has to matter to us.

Review for Twofer Murder by Glenda Bixler….The book is intense, compelling, as readers follow the story lines for two different books. Yet the humor, family interactions, and loving relationships in Carr’s books keeps reading both entertaining and fun… Carr gets better and better in her humorous scenes, as well as snappy dialogue that comes only from within close-knit friends and family… If you aren’t reading this author, you are missing much more than an average mystery writer. – review by Glenda Bixler, Book Readers Heaven

Lauren Carr’s Twofer Murder is a 2-for-1—making it a must-read for any mystery fan!

MY THOUGHTS THOUGHTS THIS BOOK

Lauren Carr is at it again with another book in the Mac Faraday Mystery series. I haven’t read the book Twofer Murder, but I had the honor of listening to the audiobook. I love this series and this book gives readers a double read two murders to solve this time. And the absolutely fun thing is that characters from two other series are here to help solve these murders. And of course my favorite character Gnarly is back with his usual fun help.

This is such a fun and interesting book to listen to. Husband and wife duo Mike and Anita Alger read this book with such confidence and their voices flow so smoothly. I didn’t tire of listening to them at all. I think they did a wonderful job with the narration.

As usual, Lauren Carr does an excellent job writing this wonderful Mystery book. I enjoying following Mac and Jessica on their journey investigating the murders with non other than the fabulous canine Gnarly, along with those characters helping from the other series. If you love a good clean mystery, you will certainly enjoy Twofer Murder, and if you have never read a Lauren Carr book, now is the time to check out this one and all of her other books. Twofer Murder is getting Five Stars from me, and oh how I would love to give it more.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Guest Post from the Author

Just Like Family by Barbara Casey

NOTE: I was asked to talk about five things people don’t know about me. Rather than talk about myself, I thought it might be fun to tell you something about each of the characters in my novel, Just Like Family. These are things the reader will discover when reading my book.

***

Vince Barnes: Worked in construction his whole life, widower, and self-made millionaire. Opinionated, easy to rile, and totally clueless about how to take care of himself. Since living by himself he has mastered simplicity by using only paper plates and coffee cups and checking out new construction around the area with his friend, Charlie Bullock.

Charlie Bullock: A simple, uneducated black man, raised in the south pruning tobacco until he was old enough to start his own lawn maintenance service. His biggest joy in life is working the soil and growing plants; that, and riding around new construction sites with his friend, Vince Barnes, and admiring the landscaping. His biggest worry, however, is being able to continue working enough at his advanced age in order to pay the increasing rent.

Cora Thompson: Went through a mid-life crisis when her husband of over twenty years divorced her. After a lot of soul-searching and counselling, she relocates to Florida where she tries to live on her own for the first time in her life. That move completely changes her personality from being a subdued, self-conscious wife, totally dependent on her husband, to a large, outgoing personality that matches her physical appearance.

Suong Giles: Originally from Viet Nam, married to a U.S. Marine and now widowed, she lives alone with an old doll that belonged to her mother being her only companion. Suong has a “gift” and uses it to communicate with her dead husband through reflective surfaces. It is her gift that is especially upsetting to her daughter Carol and son-in-law Dave when they move her into their home.

Hallie Marsh: A pretty, intelligent, motivated young woman who was happily married until her husband died of a heart attack. In trying to make it as a single woman in the cut-throat world of high-end real estate, she makes the mistake of falling in love with her boss and moves in with him. When he tells her they will get married just as soon as his son graduates from college, she believes him; that is, until he tells her he loves someone else, and that she must move out of his condo, and that she no longer has a job. She wants revenge, but that is soon replaced by her fascination of the four elderly people she meets when she buys her own home.

Carol Mathews: A co-worker of Hallie’s at the real estate office, and a best friend. She knows Hallie is making a mistake in getting involved with Jeff Darnell, her boss, but there is nothing she can do. She has her own problems in that her mother has just moved in with her and her husband, and she fears her mother is losing her mind.

Gordon Sebastian Cooney: Never married but considered a “good catch” by the single wealthy women living in Palm Beach, Gordon is a talented artist working at the same real estate office as Hallie where he designs all of the brochures and marketing displays. When Hallie first joins the prestigious Palm Beach company, it is love at first sight. As Hallie makes a series of bad decisions involving her boss, all Gordon can do is be there along with Carol to support her.

Thank you so much for your interest in my writing and for hosting me on your blog site. I wish you all my best. ~Barbara

BLURB:

All in one day, thirty-five-year-old Hallie Marsh learns that the man she loves, works for, and is living with has found someone else and that she no longer has a job or a place to live.  She is also involved in a car accident.  She retreats to her parents’ home in the northern part of Florida to be consoled and to decide what to do with the rest of her life only to find out that her mother is planning to leave her father for another man.  Embittered, filled with anger, and wanting revenge, Hallie decides to take a year’s sabbatical and write a novel that would reveal the unethical, if not illegal, real estate business practices of her former boss and lover.

Determined and focused, Hallie buys a house in the neighborhood where her two best friends and former co-workers live:  Carol Mathews and Gordon Sebastian Cooney.  It is through Gordon and Carol that Hallie comes to know four neighbors, one of whom is Carol’s Vietnamese mother who carries a doll and talks into reflective surfaces.  These four neighbors–Cora, Suong, Charlie, and Vince–are all elderly, peculiar, and alone at this stage in their lives until Vince comes up with a plan:  The four of them will form an alliance, buy the old Braswell estate which is located just down the road, fix it up, and live in it almost like family.  Hallie is fascinated by these four people, and rather than write a tell-all book she begins writing about their alliance.  With this new focus and the friendship of Carol and Gordon, Hallie overcomes her feelings of rage, she is able to cope with her mother’s sudden death, and she finds true love.

Excerpt Three:

Cora served lunch in the dining room the way she had planned, but it wasn’t a very happy occasion.  No matter how much Suong told them it wasn’t their fault, Vince, Charlie, and Cora felt they had let their friend down by somehow offending Carol.  After eating about half of what he normally ate, Vince excused himself, saying he felt a little tired and thought he would go take a nap.  Charlie mumbled something about needing to water the plants in his room and followed Vince up the stairs.  Suong and Cora sat in silence at the table staring at the dirty dishes and uneaten food.  Suddenly they heard Charlie yell.  Cora threw down her napkin and hurried up the stairs with Suong right behind her.  Charlie ran out of Vince’s room waving his arms.

“Hurry.  Somethin’s wrong with Vince!  Oh, gawd,” said Charlie, wringing his hands and hopping from one foot to the other.

Vince was lying on his bed gasping for breath.  His face was an ugly red and his hands were clawing at the sheet.

“Go call 9ll, Suong, and tell them to send an ambulance to the old Braswell home off of State Road 9,” Cora said as soon as she saw Vince.  Suong ran out of the room.

“Loosen his belt and trousers, Charlie,” ordered Cora, and she began feeling inside Vince’s pants pockets.

“Oh gawd,” Charlie kept repeating, and he was trembling all over.  Finally after several attempts he managed to get the snap undone on Vince’s trousers.

“I can’t find his bottle of nitroglycerin pills,” said Cora now fumbling in Vince’s shirt pocket.  “Loosen his tie and open his shirt, Charlie,” she told him and she rushed into Vince’s bathroom.  A few seconds later she ran back into the bedroom carrying a little brown bottle.  Charlie had unbuttoned Vince’s shirt and taken off his tie.

“We gotta do somethin’,” Charlie yelled. “Cora!”

Cora emptied out two small white pills into her hand and tried to open Vince’s mouth.  But his teeth were clenched tightly together, and he was holding his breath.

“Oh, sweet Jesus, Cora, we gotta do somethin’,” Charlie repeated frantically.

Suong, who had gone to get Ngoc Tuyet after calling 9ll, now ran back into the room.  She stood on the other side of the bed crushing Ngoc Tuyet in her arms.

“Charlie, now you listen to me.”  Cora grabbed his arm.  “We must get Vince’s mouth open so I can put these pills under his tongue.  Do you understand?”

Charlie put his hand under Vince’s jaw and poked his thumb between his lips, but he couldn’t get Vince’s mouth open.  Cora stood ready with the two pills in her hand.  He pressed harder, trying to work his thumb between Vince’s teeth.  Still he couldn’t get Vince’s mouth open.  The veins on Vince’s neck and temples started swelling.

“Charlie!” yelled Cora.

“Breathe you son of a bitch,” yelled Charlie.  “Breathe!”

Just then Vince slowly let his breath out, and when he did, he relaxed his jaw muscles.  It was just slightly, but Charlie felt it.  He immediately jammed his thumb between Vince’s upper and lower teeth and held it there until Cora could slip the pills under Vince’s tongue.  In the distance they could hear a siren.  Suong ran downstairs to open the front door.

After several minutes the three members of the emergency crew managed to get a heartbeat and moved Vince from the bed onto a stretcher.  Cora rode with him in the ambulance to the hospital.  Charlie and Suong followed behind in the pickup.  Once they got to the hospital, Cora, Charlie, and Suong had to wait in a separate room while the doctor worked on Vince.  After an hour, the doctor came in and told them that Vince had been taken into surgery for an emergency bypass.

They waited four more hours, sitting and holding hands, and taking turns holding Ngoc Tuyet.  Finally the doctor came back in and told them Vince was out of immediate danger.  The operation had been successful, he felt, but he would know more after a couple of days.  Vince would be kept in recovery for the rest of the night.  They would be able to see him the next day.  There was nothing else they could do for now.

Charlie, Cora, and Suong drove back home too exhausted to even talk.  It was well past midnight when they finally got there.  Wearily they all went upstairs to their rooms.

Cora dressed for bed and crawled between the cool sheets.  She tried to go to sleep, but her eyes wouldn’t stay closed.  She felt so frightened and helpless and weak.  Vince was the strong one of the alliance.  Without him . . .  There was a light tap on her door.  Cora turned on the lamp next to her bed.

“Come in,” she said.

Suong opened the door and shuffled over to Cora’s bed.

“Is fine if Ngoc Tuyet and Suong asleep with you?” asked Suong.

“Of course it is,” said Cora.  “I don’t much feel like sleeping by myself either.”

Suong slipped under the covers, placing Ngoc Tuyet between her and Cora so that the doll could share the pillow.  Cora tucked the covers around Suong and Ngoc Tuyet and turned out the light.  Then she lay there, staring into the darkness.  In a few minutes there was another tap on the door.  Cora raised up on one elbow and turned the lamp back on.

“Come in,” she said.

Charlie opened the door and hovered there, his eyes filled with tears and KittyPussy doing figure eights around his legs.

“It’s all right, Charlie,” said Cora.  “You can sleep in here with us tonight.”

Charlie climbed in next to Cora and turned on his side.  He didn’t want the women to see him crying.  Cora reached over him and once more turned off the lamp. She pulled the blanket up around Charlie’s shoulders and kissed the back of his head.

“Good night, Charlie,” she said, and once again she lay in the darkness.

The Wrong Side of Murder is another wonderful cozy mystery by author Lauren Carr. It has all the elements that draw me in – an intelligent female lead, an equally smart boyfriend who partners to help her, a complicated plot where clues are slowly revealed, people who aren’t what they seem to be, comedic moments to balance the darker ones, and several quirky pets full of personality.

It’s a wonderful book to escape into at the end of the day. And get ready to read into the wee hours as, if you’re like me, you won’t be able to stop reading until the mystery is revealed.  -review by Marilyn R. Wilson, Olio by Marilyn

Nikki’s an intense individual who makes the perfect investigative journalist. She wants answers yesterday and she is willing to dig in to get them. She might get it wrong at the beginning but with the help of her family and close friends, she’ll get the answers she wants and needs. – review by Blooming with Books

MY THOUGHTS ON THE WRONG SIDE OF MURDER

This cozy mystery is such an awesome read. Nikki Bryant is back with her fun and funny dog Elmo. Still investigating murders, and this time, a class mate accused of murdering her mom years ago when she was in high school. Jodi Gibbons has been accused of murdering her mom since that one day when she left home to attend school and her mother was later found dead. Could this teenager murder her mom, and go to school like nothing happened? This is what Nikki and her side kick Elmo is about to find out.

I didn’t want to put this book down!! I didn’t want to think Jodi was guilty, especially the way the town plagued her guilty. Author Lauren Carr and her phenomenal writing skills had me guessing with the twists and turns with the case. And Elmo always had his quirky say so as well. I love, love this sweet special canine that adds so much to the story. There are quite a few characters, some we know from book one, and some we meet new in this one. Carr creates solid characters, most of them I really love and some I could have put in their place real fast! But they all play their parts so well in each scene, it makes the story seem real.

I felt so bad for Jodi because of the way the people of her town treated her. I was so glad she was finally going to tell her story, but another twist in the story, and  that didn’t happen the way readers wanted either. And then the ending was a shocker for me, I never guessed it, and it was great!! I love how Carr pulls everything together so smoothly and creates the special ending that is  satisfaction for her readers.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

The book is intense, compelling, as readers follow the story lines for two different books. Jeanette’s Gift by Blossom Turner

About the Book

Book: Jeanette’s Gift

Author: Blossom Turner

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Release date: October 11, 2022

My Rating: Five out of Five Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This life wasn’t the one she dreamed of, but happily ever afters don’t always come when and how we expect.

At twenty-nine, Jeanette Williams has watched each one of her four sisters marry and start families of their own. It’s hard not to believe God has forgotten the desires of her heart, especially when most people refer to her as Spinster Williams. Without the beautiful children she teaches, life would be unbearably lonely.

When the handsome widower, Theo Wallace, and his six children move into the Shenandoah Valley, every available woman is atwitter—except for Jeanette. She has no such aspirations that someone as plain as her could draw even a smattering of interest.

As life throws this unlikely couple together, Jeanette can’t help but fall in love with Theo’s children and their soul-wrenching plight. Before she knows it, her heart is far more invested than she could’ve ever imagined. And not just with the children, but with their handsome father as well. Is she headed for another heartbreak, or is it possible God had a beautiful plan in the works all along?

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Jeanette’s Gift is the last book of the Five Book Series, The Shenandoah Brides. Twenty-nine year Jeanette Williams just knows God has forgotten about her when it comes to romance. All of her sisters and beautiful and happily married, and she is the plain one that no man wants. Not being married, she was hired as the school teacher, and she loved her students. This is all her life would be, and she has accepted this as her calling in life. But is it?

I love, love, love this story. Blossom Turner gives her readers another amazing book to read. I have to say I connected with Jeanette more than I have connected with any character in a very long while. She kind of reminds me of myself growing into my teenage years because I have always felt like the plain one. Still do sometimes.

I appreciate so much Blossom writing this story. As I followed Jeanette and her insecurities about her self worth, I appreciate the advice from her dad, her friend, and even Theo. And speaking of Theo, he is such a good guy. I love his sweet children, and felt so bad for them. Jeanette was truly a blessing in their lives. Blossom does such a fabulous job creating these wonderful characters, they were so realistic I felt we were old friends sitting around talking, just as friends do. I learned a lot from reading this book, especially about my insecurities, and knowing there is help, all I need to do is ask. Just as Jeanette was able to overcome her insecurities about her self worth, any of us can do the same. If this is something you deal with, start by reading “Jeanette’s Gift.” You will find this book is full of information that will help you! Not only that, you get to see first hand in Jeanette’s character how God changed her life.

Now I know this book is fiction, but the valuable lessons about self worth you read throughout the book, the scripture, the lessons and the talks about our God are the absolute truth. I highly recommend this beautiful book. I’m giving Jeanette’s Gift Five Stars and I really wish I could give it many more.

Do You Enjoy Romance That Keeps You Thinking Days Later?

Long before I knew I could write, I loved to read. Being a hopeless romantic I gravitated to all romance stories either contemporary or historical. I soon realized that finding clean fiction but still written with the passion God created us to experience, was hard to find. (Song of Solomon is a good example of the expression of passion and love between a man and woman without being explicit.)

Given the gift of a writing career later in life one thing was for sure…I wanted to write what I like to read. Clean romance does not need to be boring. As each story pours out, I realize that writing historical fiction is my passion. I finally know what I was born to do. The Shenandoah Brides is a series of five sisters and their five love stories. Oct. 11, 2022 is launch day for the final book in the series called Jeanette’s Gift.

Each book has a redeeming theme. Katherine’s Arrangement, set in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, post-civil war, speaks on how to love the way 1 Corinthians encourages, even when marriage (Katherine’s is an arranged marriage) has proven to be very disappointing. The second book Amelia’s Heartsong, situated in Richmond, Virginia illustrates how love transcends the pomp and circumstance of class and money and encourages us to view others the way God does. The third book, Lucinda’s Defender unfolds back in the valley, and speaks of how our greatest mistake does not have to define our future. A message on second chances encourages the soul. The fourth book, Gracie’s Surrender once again set in Richmond, speaks of a life dedicated to the ministry of God helping the underprivileged orphans. Gracie learns that God can upset even our best intentions with a better plan.

However, the message for this fifth book, Jeanette’s Gift, is a subject so near and dear to my heart. Growing up in an environment that tore me down instead of build me up, proved to be invaluable in writing on this subject. The theme of this book—healing from low self-worth—is a topic that many will relate to.

Jeanette suffers from low self-worth and believes God has forgotten her. A very valuable process unfolds with truth and techniques that work today. Jeanette learns to accept that how life unfolds is up to the sovereignty of God, and He can be trusted. She also breathes in the truth of how she is, indeed, fearfully and wonderfully made.

My prayer is that as Jeanette grows toward healing in the story, that any reader suffering in this same way will embrace the steps on how to break this vicious cycle. I know from first-hand experience healing is possible, and I long to get that message out there.

Although this book can easily be read as a stand-alone, enjoying the whole series as the family saga unfolds will deepen the experience.

I sincerely hope you enjoy the read as much as I enjoyed the write. I love to hear from my readers. Contact me at http://blossomturner.com

That ornery, but oh, so handsome, charming, and somewhat, wayward angel, Detective Bobby Starr, has returned. This time, he’s back to fulfill his third and, hopefully, his final requirement to get into Saint Peter’s prestigious Guardian Angel Squad. Because if all goes well, she’ll be rid of the menacing angel once and for all. Except, an emergency jerks Alexa back to her own time, and to complicate matters, she’s got a tag-along. Can Bobby solve this last case without Alexa’s help? After all, she’s got her hands full with a life-or-death mystery in the twenty-first century!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Double Dog Dare is the conclusion to C.S. McDonald’s The Owls Nest Series. Again we meet Alexa and Bobby as they try solving Mysteries. There is some time travel going on as they go back to the 1960’s and then return to the current time. I did enjoy the trip back to the 1960’s and the details given of this era. I always find humor in McDonald’s books and this one is no different.

I so much enjoyed this audiobook version of Double Dog Dare by C.S. McDonald. It was refreshing listening to the story as the wonderful Narrator read the book. Ms. Waxenberg’s voice is one that is pleasant to listen to and I never tired of hearing it. Some of the unique voices for characters didn’t come out as well as others, but all in all it was really awesome. I encourage you to try this audiobook of Double Dog Dare. I think you will enjoy this wonderful cozy mystery

Audiobook Review for Maxed Out. By C.S. McDonald

This review is for Maxed Out

Book Details:

Book Title:  Maxed Out (The Owl’s Nest Mysteries)
Author:  C.S. McDonald
Category:  Adult Fiction, 184 pages
Length: 5 hours, 32 minutes
Genre:  Cozy Mystery
Publisher:  McWriter Books
Release date:  April 2021
Content Rating:  G. C.S. McDonald’s books are appropriate for YA readers as well as adults–no bad language or sexual content.

Book Description:The Owl’s Nest Couturier Shoppe is a huge success! Business is booming and Alexa Owl’s love life is heating up. Yet much to the seamstress’s dismay, Detective Bobby Starr is suddenly back again! Bobby isn’t your everyday gumshoe. Rather, he’s an angel who’s trying to earn a place in Saint Peter’s Guardian Angel Squad. He’s required to solve murders he had left unsettled from when he walked the earth in order to be accepted into this prestigious group. Of course, they will need to return to the time period in which the murder took place, and again, Alexa is a reluctant time traveler. Oh, and there’s one more little problem—this time, Bobby’s brought along a friend, Maxi Krogen, and she’s no angel!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

In Maxed Out, Detective Starr is back, but just as an angel. Though being an angel, he has his work to do, and a lot of cases to solve. This time his new friend Maxi is with him as well. This cozy mystery has a lot of humor in it, that I enjoyed very much. C.S. McDonald does a fabulous job with writing this story with all of the elements needed to keep readers on their toes reading.

I love these characters as was so glad to listen to the audiobook for a different perspective on the book. Ms. Waxenberg does an exceptional job narrating this book. I enjoyed her clear voice, a voice you can listen to for hours with no problem. It only took a short while listening to her voice changing with the different characters to distinguish which  character she was reading about. If you enjoy audiobooks, Maxed Out is a great book to add to your library. And if you haven’t taken the jump into the audio world, Maxed Out is for you as well. This would make an awesome first book for you to listen to.

Author: Lena Nelson Dooley

Genre: Historical Romance

Release date: October 6, 2022

He ruined her life once, but this time the stakes are so much higher.

When Dave Jefferson became a Christian, he determined to become the man God wanted him to be—including making restitution to everyone he swindled. He’s accomplished that daunting task, contacting every one of them and depleting his bank account. All except for the most important person he seeks—the regret he’s carried for ten years.

Margaret Hancock has made a good life for herself as the owner of a boardinghouse in Grape Vine, Texas, far from the terrible event that happened ten years ago. She’s even forgiven the man who once deceived her. But when two mysterious cowboys arrive at her boardinghouse to spend the night, she almost doesn’t recognize Dave. Everything about him has changed except his piercing blue eyes and his voice.

As memories assail her, she’s no longer sure about that forgiveness. Especially when the most important part of the life she’s worked so hard to build flees without a trace. Does she dare trust Dave once more—especially if that’s the only way to recover what means more to her than anything else?

About the Author

They have lived in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex for decades. She is an active member of ACFW and one of the founding members the DFW local chapter. More from Lena

I’ve been a lover of history for decades. In college and graduate school, all my elective courses were history. Of course, I chose the countries and eras I wanted to learn about. When I began writing novels, my first one was a contemporary story. After that at least 75% or more of my novels have been historical, all the way from 1805 through the early 20th century.

One of the hallmarks of my historical novels is the authenticity I write into the stories. Because of the amount of research I’ve done over the years, I’m kind of an expert in 19th century history. My characters and their stories are completely fictional, but the other things in the book are mostly true. I search until I find what I need to know or until I reach a complete dead end.

A Heart’s Redemption has two major settings—Fort Worth, Texas and Grape Vine, Texas, which later became Grapevine.

I’m what’s called in the industry a seat-of-the-pants author, more or less. I do have the complete outline of the story in my head. When I sit down to write, I know where I’m going, but I don’t have every single scene plotted out as some authors do. And I pray… a lot. During the time I’m writing a book, God drops ideas into my thought processes. Not just while I’m writing, but other times, too. That’s the exciting thing about writing. This keeps it fresh for me.

When you’ve finished reading this story, I hope you’ll let me know what you think of it. I really like getting reader feedback.

A Historical Peach Cobbler

8 peaches

1/2 cup brown sugar, divided

1/2 cup white sugar, divided

1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 cup all purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

6 tablespoons unsalted butter (cut in small pieces and chilled)

Pit the peaches, and cut into slices.

Use a large bowl to combine the sliced peaches, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Add in 1/4 cup of brown sugar and 1/4 cup of white sugar and mix so the peaches are coated evenly.

Bake the peach mixture for 10 minutes in the preheated oven.

While the peach mixture is baking, combine the flour, baking powder, salt and the remaining 1/4 cup white sugar, and the remaining 1/4 cup brown sugar.

Add in the butter with and blend with either a pastry blender or your fingertips until the coarsely incorporated.

Stir in the water until combined.

Remove the peach mixture from the oven and top with flour mixture.

Anything But Plain by Suzanne Woods Fisher

About the Book

Book: Anything But Plain

Author: Suzanne Woods Fisher

Genre: Amish fiction

Release date: October 4, 2022

It’s not easy being the bishop’s daughter, especially for Lydie Stoltzfus. She’s not like other Amish girls, as much as she wishes she were. The only thing she does well is disappoint others. Leaving her family and church seems unbearable, but staying might be worse.

Knowing Lydie is “between” jobs, the local doctor asks her to fill in at the front desk for a few months. To Lydie, this is a boon. It gives her time to figure out how she’s going to say goodbye to her neighbor, Nathan Yoder–the main reason she needs to leave Stoney Ridge. Nathan claims he’s in love with her, but she knows she’s not good enough for him. If in doubt, Nathan’s father reminds her frequently.

As Dok spends time with Lydie, she recognizes symptoms of an uncommon disorder among the Amish. She offers treatment for Lydie. But will it be enough to make her stay? Or has help come too late?

Suzanne Woods Fisher is a Christy finalist, a Carol Award winner, a two-time ECPA Book of the Year finalist, and the Publishers Weekly, ECPA, CBA, bestselling author of more than thirty books. Her genres include contemporary and historical romances, Amish romance, and women’s fiction. She and her husband live in a small town in California, where everyone knows everyone else, knows what they are doing and why. Most folks act a little nervous around Suzanne because they usually wind up in one of her novels. She has four grown children and enough grandchildren to keep her young. Visit Suzanne at www.suzannewoodsfisher.com

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I have been reading books by Suzanne Woods Fisher for a long time and have loved every one of them, just as I love this one. I felt so bad for Lydia because she never felt she belonged. She didn’t feel she was good enough for her Beau, and she just didn’t want to be in the community anymore. But when she started work for the local Dr., the more time Lydia spends there the more the Dok recognizes her symptoms. Will Lydia take the treatments she needs in order to help her condition?

I like that Ms. Fisher deals with a very difficult issue, that doesn’t happen with the Amish so much, but still here it is. Fisher does am amazing job with crafting her characters and writing them into the story so well. The Sweet Amish community was well detailed and I think the new medical issue made a difference in Lydia and her family. I’m always excited to read a Suzanne Woods Fisher and I am honored I can read and review this one. If you enjoy a clean Amish fiction with the Christian faith running through its characters, you will love this one. I’m giving Anything But Plain 5 Stars. And doesn’t that name fit the story so well?

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Easily Distracted? 8 Strategies to Help Stay Focused

Anything but Plain is a story about a young Amish woman with undiagnosed ADHD. Lydie Stoltzfus feels like a square peg in a round hole. She just doesn’t fit in and, to make matters worse, she’s the bishop’s daughter. At this point, the only path forward she can see is to leave Stoney Ridge. Leave her church, her friends, her family, her neighbor Nathan Yoder. It’s better to leave, Lydie decides, than to keep disappointing everyone she cares about. I won’t say anymore so that I don’t spoil the story for you.

ADHD is not a common diagnosis among the Amish and many might assume it’s not a real thing. Of course, they’re mistaken. ADHD is a real thing. While I don’t have ADHD, I do have many friends and family members who have been diagnosed. It’s challenging! And something we should all take seriously. Here’s why:

Evidence is mounting that a growing dependence on digital devices could be giving all of us some ADHD-like symptoms. Have you wondered if distractibility is becoming a problem for you? Or has a spouse or child or friend remarked on how often you pick up your phone to check a text message or scroll Instagram? You might remain physically present but your mind has wandered away. For me, the answer is, regrettably, yes.

There’s a recurring phrase in Anything but Plain that comes from an old-fashioned farming term: Walking the beans. Literally, it means weeding by hand. Figuratively, it means paying attention to our priorities. To pull the weeds before they take root.

One of the takeaway lessons of this book is to “walk the beans” of technology’s role in my life. So…I’ve been working on a few strategies. When I practice, I see a difference. Life is calmer. More manageable.

So…I wanted to pass these tips along to you. (If you have little children, these might not work for you. Not when your little ones are awake, anyway.) Hopefully, you’ll find them to be useful, and maybe spark some strategies of your own.

  • Make a plan. I start the day with an index card and write down the day’s priorities. And I check off tasks as I finish them!
  • Go off-line. Create an environment that helps you stay focused. Turn your cell phone to silent. If working on the computer, close your email app. Put yourself in distraction-free mode until you’re accomplished what you need to do
  • Finish one task before moving on to the next. Even little tasks.
  • Distractibility is at its peak during transitions. Build in margin. For example, arrive a few minutes early instead of rushing in a few minutes late.
  • When distractions are high, make tasks smaller and break down your large projects into smaller tasks to help you concentrate and give you a sense of accomplishment and progress.
  • When I’m facing a big task, I’ll break it down into smaller, more manageable pieces.
  • Set a deadline for a task. Beat the clock! Use a timer.
  • Rewards! When I beat the clock, I’ll take a break from computer work and pop up to the garden, text a friend, walk the dog. Something that feels good.

Some memories are best forgotten…

The Wyoming Territory is rife with lawlessness and disorder, something Annie Ledbetter and her parents discover when their wagon train is robbed. When he falls in love with the new Willow Falls teacher, he doesn’t realize they’ve met before—under much different circumstances. MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Forgotten Memories is such a sweet romantic read, but it takes a good while to actually get to the sweetest part. Annie Ledbetter and her family were traveling with a small wagontrain to The Wyoming Territory to start a new life. On the trail they were robbed, with one man shot and Annie’s pregnant mom going into early labor. It was a miracle a Dr came by at the right time to save their lives. The rest of their trip was uneventful. Caleb Eliason lived with his pa (the town preacher)and their family. No Longer a life of a lawman, but now as a follower of the Lord. When these lives are brought together, will they recognize each other from seven years ago?

I love love this story, and the town of Willow Falls and its people. There are  many different flavors of characters making up this small town. I love how these people loved each other and was always willing to lend a hand, specially Caleb. He is such a sweet guy and I love his caring heart. Annie fit right in being the new school teacher, and her love for the children. I was hoping the two would forget their past, but then there wouldn’t be a story would it? Penny Zeller does a fabulous job with the characters and the historical details so vividly told in each scene, which tells her amount of research. Her excellent writing skills show from the begging to the end of this book. The characters are realistic and I was happy to feel like I was in each setting with them. I can’t wait for the next book in this series. If you enjoy a clean Christian fiction with character that will stay with you for a long time, you really will enjoy Forgotten Memories by Penny Zeller. This is a book I highly recommend. This book is Five Stars for me.

The Inspiration Behind Forgotten Memories

I am often asked how I come up with ideas for my books.

Many different things inspire my plots. One inspiration comes from real-life stories. For instance, today our local librarian told me how her family homesteaded in our town in 1881. Of course, I had a million questions. I am also inspired by photographs, people-watching, and sometimes I will hear from readers about a story they’d like to read. I have often joked that I will need to be at least 102 to write down all the stories percolating in my mind.

The idea for Forgotten Memories came from reading about a mail-order bride named Eleanor. Eleanor answered an advertisement from a man named Louis, and after a time of written correspondence, they eventually made plans to marry. During the journey to meet her soon-to-be husband, Eleanor’s stagecoach was robbed. After obeying her request to hand Eleanor her trousseau, the robbers blew up the stagecoach and rode away with their loot.

When the time to be wed arrived, Louis recognized Eleanor immediately. Only later, when Eleanor and Louis were preparing to sign the marriage license, did Eleanor recognize him as the robber due to his voice and a discernable scar. Louis fled and rode off without a word, leaving Eleanor with a broken heart.

After reading Eleanor’s story, my imagination wandered and what-ifs filled my mind. What if something similar happened to a character who, years later, fell in love with a man who robbed her? What would happen when the truth was discovered? Was there any hope for a happily-ever-after?

Thus, Annie and Caleb’s story was born.

Tom Boy by Shelley Blanton-Stroud

Join Us For This Tour from Oct 3 to Oct 21, 2022

MY RATING:

Four of Five Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

BOOK DETAILS:
Book Title Tomboy: A Jane Benjamin Novel by Shelley Blanton-Stroud
Category:  Adult Fiction (18+), 308 pages
Genre Historical Thriller
Publisher She Writes Press
Release dates:   June 2022
Content Rating:
PG-13 + M. The F word appears exactly once in the book. There is a completely non-explicit sex scene. There is a suicide.

Book Description:

It’s 1939. Jane Benjamon’s got five days at sea to solve the murder of a Wimbledon champion’s coach and submit a gossip column that tells the truth. If not the facts.

On the brink of World War II, Jane wants to have it all. By day she hustles as a scruffy, tomboy cub reporter. By night she secretly struggles to raise her toddler sister, Elsie, and protect her from their mother.

But Jane’s got a plan: she’ll become the San Francisco Prospect’s first gossip columnist and make enough money to care for Elsie.

Jane finagles her way to the women’s championship at Wimbledon, starring her hometown’s tennis phenom and cover girl Tommie O’Rourke. Jane plans to write her first column there. But then she witnesses Edith “Coach” Carlson, Tommie’s closest companion, drop dead in the stands of apparent heart attack, and her plan is blown.

Sailing home on the RMS Queen Mary, Jane veers between competing instincts: Should she write a social bombshell column, personally damaging her new friend Tommie’s persona and career? Or should she work to uncover the truth of Coach’s death and its connection to a larger conspiracy involving US participation in the coming war?

Putting away her menswear and donning first-class ballgowns, Jane discovers what upper-class status hides, protects, and destroys. Ultimately—like nations around the globe in 1939—she must choose what she’ll give up in order to do what’s right.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

@IREADBOOKTOURS

I didn’t read the first book in this series, but I had no problems getting to know Jane and what was taking place in this book. She is trying to master raising a toddler as well as her job as a tomboy reporter while dressed in her finest young man’s clothes. And even when her boss found her out, she was so good at her job, he keeps her on as his employee. That’s a bit to say in the 1930’s. She masters at several interesting things, including a trip across the ocean and back. But will she get the big jobs she wants to make a good life for she and her toddler?

This is quite the journey to follow this character throughout the book. Jane is definitely not the perfect person, but she strives yo do what need by to survive.  The author does a very nice job of writing with so much detail that it is easy to follow the story. The characters are well written into the story, and I enjoyed their development throughout this story, although the adventures of Jane and sometimes Tommie as well were kinda wild and truly adventurous. Tomboy is getting Four Stars from me. If you like Hidtorical Thriller type books, you are surr to like this one.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Splashes of Joy

Collaborating with an audiobook narrator

I had no way of knowing, when I first met audiobook narrator, April Doty, how she would influence Tomboy and the Jane Benjamin Trilogy.

April worked out of her home studio in Spain, so we met at a mutually convenient hour over Zoom. (This was excellent preparation for the many Zoom meetings we would all later have while accommodating the pandemic.)

I knew the first time I heard a recorded excerpt of April’s narration that she was the perfect Jane for me. Her voice was almost exactly what I heard in my head as I wrote Copy Boy, my first novel in the trilogy. Now, because of that audiobook, I completely heard April’s voice as I wrote Tomboy. So her voice was a godsend. But that’s not all.

April had questions about my novels, things she needed to know before narrating. How much does Jane know about the truth when she narrates this scene? How confident is she in what she’s asserting in this scene? How completely should her hidden accent slip out when she’s emotional? How earnest should she be in this scene, how cynical? What should be revealed in the sound of her voice when she talks to or about her mother?

I loved those questions because they reminded me that even a brilliant, careful reader cannot know everything I know about my characters. It was a reminder to provide the information I really need a reader to know, so they are not left guessing.

On the other hand, it has been a delight and joy to hear April find something in my own character that I didn’t recognize. April located joy and wonder in Jane where I didn’t see it, and that improved the way I continue to write.

One of the greatest gifts of this writing life, in addition to conversations with readers, are the collaborations with other creatives—the narrator, the cover designer, the editor—who help me refine my story, getting it closer and closer to the truth of that character, who now lives like family in my mind. I hope you’ll love April Doty’s narration as I do.

Excerpt

I’d like to say that life improved, but I’d be telling you a lie. Elwood Bledsoe continued to bully Aarush. While Aarush constantly cautioned me to rein in my reaction to him, I could not. It landed me in two more detentions, and the last one finally cost me my job at the supermarket where I bagged groceries.

“You’re coming for dinner,” Aarush informed me one afternoon.

I shook my head. “Can’t.”

Aarush neatly packed his brown bag with unfinished food and said, “You have to come over. You’re not working. Tonight they are announcing the winners of the Find My Power Essay on television. Devon Neely has to win. Imagine losing your sight and learning— ”

“Aarush, they’ll never accept a blind kid.”

“They took that girl Lydia,” he blurted.

They had indeed.

“She’s not blind,” he retorted.

I raised my eyebrow. She hardly looked like someone people expected to make it into the Temple. All I could recall was she seemed most unremarkable. Most of the kids who were accepted had a rare talent. They could run the fastest or do math without a pen or paper. I couldn’t remember what made her special.
