A Heart's Gift

Is a marriage of convenience the answer?

Franklin Vine has worked hard to build the ranch he inherited into one of the most successful in the majestic Colorado mountains. If only he had an heir to one day inherit the legacy he’s building. But he was burned once in the worst way, and he doesn’t plan to open his heart to another woman. Even if that means he’ll eventually have to divide up his spread among the most loyal of his hired hands.

When Lorinda Sullivan is finally out from under the control of men who made all the decisions in her life, she promises herself she’ll never allow a man to make choices for her again. But without a home in the midst of a hard Rocky Mountain winter, she has to do something to provide for her infant son.

A marriage of convenience seems like the perfect arrangement, yet the stakes quickly become much higher than either of them ever planned. When hearts become entangled, the increasing danger may change their lives forever.

About the Author

Lena Dooley

Lena Nelson Dooley has been an author for 36 years. Her 51st book released in June 2020. Raised in Arkansas, she married a Texan 56 years ago. They have lived in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex for decades. She is an active member of ACFW and one of the founding members the DFW local chapter. She’s often been a speaker for other writers’ groups and conferences, both as a keynote speaker and a workshop teacher. Her fans love reading her books filled with characters who grip your heart.

A Heart’s Gift is set in the beautiful Colorado mountains, and a very good read. This is my first book by Lena Dooley and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Dooley does an amazing job with the vivid descriptions of Colorado, bringing the lives of the people in the 1890’s Era to life. The rustic mountains wasn’t an easy place to live, a lot if hard work for everyone. These characters were so wonderful playing their parts so well. Their struggles were many, but the perseverance during their trials was real and strong. I appreciate the way this author weaves the Christian life in the lives of her characters, and brings faith to life between them. This is truly a story of forgiveness, faith, redemption and love, a strong and enjoyable couple. And even though we know what the ending will somewhat be, it was still so interesting and enjoyable to follow the journey with Franklin and Lorinda and witness all that happened between them.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

THE STORY BEHIND A HEART’S GIFT

I’ve been a lover of history for decades. In college and graduate school, all my elective courses were history. Of course, I chose the countries and eras I wanted to learn about. When I began writing novels, my first one was a contemporary story. After that at least 75% or more of my novels have been historical, from 1805 through the early 20th century.

I’ve always been fascinated by the relationship between Joseph and Mary the mother of Jesus. The Bible doesn’t give us a lot of information about their relationship. But by his actions, we can assume that Joseph believed the angel and Mary about her baby. He didn’t do the usual thing and put her away quietly. Instead, he protected her, and from the day He was born, he became the earthly father of Jesus. I’ve often thought about what that meant for Joseph and for Mary. When I wrote a story of a marriage between a man and a single mother, I used the emotions that I feel God has revealed to me about their relationship.

The first time I read a marriage of convenience novel, I loved it. And I’ve read quite a few. I’ve also written a few. A Heart’s Gift is one of them. This book was an easy and interesting book to write.

I’m what’s called in the industry a seat-of-the-pants author, more or less. I do have the complete outline of the story in my head. When I sit down to write, I know where I’m going, but I don’t have every single scene plotted out as some authors do. And I pray a lot. During the time I’m writing a book, God drops ideas into my mind. Not just while I’m writing, but other times, too. That’s the exciting thing about writing. This keeps it fresh for me.

During the writing of A Heart’s Gift, there’s a place where I just stopped and said, “God, what am I going to do now?” When you get there, you’ll know what scene I mean, but I don’t want to give a spoiler.

I never dreamed that the book would turn into a suspense novel in the last quarter of the book, but God knew. And it made it a better book.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Malcolm MacGregor and Alanza Cantalamessa are from very different cultures and social standings, but that doesn’t stop the attraction between the two. Malcolm finds himself having  lunch at the Cantalamessa family restaurant  every day, just to watch Alanza, but he never really talked to her that much. Then Malcolm finds he’s getting a promotion that will keep him away from home for six months. So he decides it’s time to move fast and win Alanza’s love very fast so she can go in this trip with him as his wife.

I enjoyed this sweet Christmas story. Malcolm and Alanza are both interesting and intriguing characters that I begin to really like as the story unfolds. And I especially like the closeness of Alanza’s family, and their concern for her. The 12 gifts was an interesting part of the story. I found myself wandering what the next gift would be. And in the end, well that’s where you will need to read the story to find out what the real ending is going to be for these two wonderful characters. This is a sweet cozy Christmas story that everyone enjoying Christmas stories will certainly love. I highly encourage you to check out this wonderful book!

Guest Post from Lena

She took the pan off the burner, dropped tiny marshmal-lows into the waiting over-sized mugs, and filled them with the fragrant hot chocolate. “Do you want to drink it here, or would you rather go in the living room? The sofa is more comfortable.”

“Whatever you want to do.” His honeyed tone wrapped around her like a warm blanket.

She handed a mug to him, picked up her own, along with coasters and two napkins, and headed into the living room. He followed.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I really like Lena Dooley’s books, and I have enjoyed reading the conclusion to the McKenna’s Daughters series! And Catherine’s story was very intriguing because the secret she finds out about her family and her life when she turns eighteen. As Catherine takes out on her journey to find her two identical sisters and the story unfolds, I couldn’t put the book down because I wanted to see what would happen next! The characters are believable and I like they way they tell their story! I highly recommend this book for your reading enjoyment.

ABOUT THE BOOK

When her mother dies, Mary Lenora must grow up quickly to take care of her brothers and sisters. Can love help her to shoulder the burden?

Mary Lenora Caine knows she is adopted. As she was growing up, her mother called her “God’s blessing.” But now that she’s gone, Mary no longer feels like any kind of blessing. Her father, in his grief, has cut himself off from the family, leaving the running of the home entirely in Mary’s hands.

As she nears her eighteenth birthday, Mary can’t see anything in her future but drudgery. Then her childhood friend Daniel begins to court her, promising her a life of riches and ease. But her fairy-tale dreams turn to dust when her family becomes too much for Daniel, and he abandons her in her time of deepest need.

Will Daniel come to grips with God’s plan for him? And if he does return, can Mary trust that this time he will really follow through?

If you would like to read the first chapter of Mary’s Blessing, go HERE.

My Thoughts on this Book

Being adopted made is difficult for Mary to sometimes know who she really was,  and many times there was difficulty in the family that adopted her. But this family always seem to work through their problems, and not be afraid to tackle them, instead of letting the go and not doing anything like so many families do.

Mary’s wishes have been to have a family and be out on her own, but maybe not as soon as she might be. As readers follow this story along the Oregon Trail, we are drawn into the story as Mary seeks to find answers to what she wants in life, and just who Daniel really is.

This was another really enjoyable book my Lena Dooley….and I highly recommend it for your reading pleasure.
