BOOK EXCERPT

Into the Fog Excerpt 6

“Hmm.” Kelsey squinted ahead, returning MJ’s attention to the approaching wall of fog and the possibility of falling off the bridge.

“Maybe we shouldn’t go in there.” MJ’s shoulders and gut tightened. She slowed her pace and grabbed Kelsey’s elbow to guide her toward the grass beside the road. “I never saw fog like this in Arizona. Did you experience it wherever you’re from?”

Kelsey shook her arm from MJ’s grasp. “I don’t tell people where I’m from, but I’ve seen plenty of fog. If you’re not used to it, I can see why it might scare you. I’ll see you tomorrow.” She stretched her long legs and sprinted away.

MJ stopped, confused. “I didn’t say I wouldn’t go.” Despite that, the reprieve eased the stiffness in her neck and shoulders.

Kelsey yelled over her shoulder as she disappeared into the fog. “It’s okay. I’m in the mood to be alone with my thoughts. See you tomorrow.”

“Don’t run in the middle of the road, okay?” An image of the bridge flashed through her brain. “Stay on the grass.”

Kelsey shouted something that MJ didn’t understand.

As she shifted toward the dirt path she’d mentioned to Kelsey, a silver sedan passed, followed by a black tow truck.

Book Title: The Way Out (Book 1: Be Careful What You Wish for Series) by Gordon Jensen with Cara Highsmith and Gordon Thomas
Category:  Adult Fiction (18+),  240 pages
Genre: Sci-Fi

My Rating: Four Stars⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Book Description:

When the Alpha Centauri crew returns to earth after a failed mission to explore a distant planet, they quickly learn the world is not how they left it.

Under new global leadership, the planet has managed to
go decades without conflict, except for one major problem. Thanks to a pandemic caused by a mutation in a new strain of GMO corn, the world’s population plummeted to 2.6 billion, wiping out a disproportionate amount of men and leaving the globe run almost entirely by women. The mutation altered the human DNA, making it impossible to produce male babies and increasing Y-chromosome related diseases.

Because of their lack of exposure, the Alpha Centauri crew, especially the men on board, now find themselves in high demand. The Powers that Be think they are the solution, but with that solution comes the inevitable hunger for power and control. As greed, self-interest, and corruption rear their ugly heads, a planet that had found its way to peace is thrust into turmoil once again.

So, the question becomes: Are they really the answer to a seemingly unsolvable problem? The world may soon come to understand that sometimes getting what you wish for isn’t the gift you think it will be.

The Way Out is at once a brilliant and relatable work of post-apocalyptic fiction. Think The Handmaid’s Tale mixed with Netflix’s The Wilds, and a touch of Interstellar, the movie. It’s a uniquely told story that will have you waiting as impatiently as the crew to understand the New World Order of the near future.

Book Description:

Although the reappearance of the Alpha Centauri I crew was miraculous, it was not the celebratory homecoming they expected. Their return to a world reeling from a pandemic that wiped out more than half the population thrust them right into the center of controversy and conflict. Now, three years later, though the tide has turned and the survival of the human race seems to be secure, the survival of human relations is far less certain. The cure should have been the injection of hope the world needed to restore balance and end the chaos of the last four decades. Instead, the complex implications for personal rights and freedom have
fractured the North American territory in such a way that the division may never be repaired. As the crew dispersed to find their place in this new landscape, Hunter Young found himself embedded in the Marshall administration as an agent for the mysterious K Group. What had been a relatively uneventful assignment suddenly becomes a whirlwind of adventure as he is called to a rendezvous that requires a long and circuitous journey.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Two Roads to Paradise (Book 2: Be Careful What You Wish for Series) by Gordon Jensen with Cara Highsmith and Gordon Thomas picks up about three years after the Alpha Centauri I crew landed back to earth. What they find of earth is a lot like what our world is today, especially with the division among the people. Discussion this group had was a little eerie because it is the same things going on in our world today. As they strive to find their way in this new world, it wasn’t as easy as they though. Especially with Hunter and his mission. There is much going on in this book. I encourage you to read the first book, The Way Out first, in order to meet the characters and get an understand of what is in this second book. There are lots of twists and turns in Two Roads to Paradise, and I found myself having to go back and re-read in order to understand what is going on. If you enjoy Sci-Fi and Dystopian books, you will enjoy this one. Again with this second book in the series, the author’s writes a very good book and their writing is exceptional. I’m giving  Two Roads to Paradise Four Stars. I encourage you to check out this book as well as the first book in this series.

Skate Cute by Melissa J. Roche

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Contemporary Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Kriss heads home to her small prairie town with 98% of an astrophysics PhD, a load of memories she’d rather not think about, and a survival plan: skate and graduate. Her plan doesn’t include the attention of a familiar admirer from the nearby fire station, one with an impressive physique, a hidden singing talent, and a smile dazzling enough to sweep her off her skates. Before she knows it, she’s falling for him—hard.

Chase has settled into the rhythms of his small-town firefighter routine, but he remembers Kriss from high school: the starry-eyed skater girl on her way out the door of his life. Now she’s back, just as gorgeous as ever, spinning around the next-door rink without a care in the world. Or so he thinks, until Kriss is targeted with mysterious acts of vandalism designed to derail her dreams. Can he help Kriss find the courage to stand up under the attacks and trust herself to love again?

Excerpt Three:

Emmy started counting them off, but Kriss wasn’t listening. The song was starting. She took a sip of her water as casually as possible and watched Chase’s eyes close again as he drew in another steadying deep breath.

Then he opened his eyes and looked straight at her.

“‘Thought I had it all together…’”

She remembered to breathe. He wasn’t quite looking exactly straight at her, more like just above her head.

“‘Life was simple, like the weather…’”

The lyrics. He was reading the karaoke lyrics on the screen, which happened to be right over her head. Her cheeks burned with relief and embarrassment, but her heart was still pounding.

She took another sip from her water and tried to focus on her table’s conversation like she didn’t have a care in the world who was on that stage.

But… that voice. She had only heard it briefly before, but she was already certain she would never forget it all her life. Baritone, that was it. Solid baritone, rich and deep, but light enough to soar if it had to.

She heard it catch a little on a high note and glanced to the stage just in time to see Chase cringe and clear his throat with a quick cough before launching into the next verse. But then he recovered, fixing his attention on the screen like it was his lifeline and starting to pour into the song the confidence it wanted.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Melissa received her first pair of black-and-hot-pink inline skates in fourth grade, a couple of years before she swore her life to the study of the stars (in a fit of sci-fi inspired passion). Two decades later, she has acquired several larger pairs of skates and an astronomy PhD, both of which tend to slip out from under her at the most inopportune moments. She enjoys skating and singing at the neighborhood rink in her small town in Colorado, where she lives with her husband, two boys, and a cozy lap cat. Only one of which is allowed to read her writing over her shoulder.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

#IREADBOOKTOURS

The Way Out is Book 1 in the Be Careful What You Wish for Series by Gordon Jensen with Cara Highsmith and Gordon Thomas. Sci-fi is a genre I don’t read a lot, but this one was quite interesting. It was pretty much fun following eighteen men and eight women as they leave on a mission and ended up staying much longer than expected. They ended up in a deep black hole that kept them for a while. Well, the crew thought it was only a few years, but it was in fact forty years. And they found that the world had changed immensely while they were gone. No conflict in decades? So not like today, but wouldn’t it be nice? But there was one issue that took out an excessive amount of men and now the world is mostly run by women. As the crew continued to find changes in this new world, it was scary to think, it could easily happen today, especially in the light of the pandemic the last few years.

Some of the things were over my head, or maybe it just didn’t interest me. Yet all in all, this is a well written book. The writing style different that any I have read before, and I like it.The Way Out is a quick and easy read, and I am happy to give it Four Stars. If you enjoy a good sci-fi read, I’m sure you will love this one.

 MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

#iReadBookTours

A Midlife Voyage to Transformation by Donna Roe Daniell is written to help women flow through the struggles that life throws to them. When Donna started out, got married, had a child, she never thought she would end up alone trying to raise her boy. And even moving to her mom so she would have help didn’t help. Then her husband wanted a divorce, and it seemed like everything was stacking up on her, and where was she to go? What was she to do?

I wasn’t sure what this book would be like. Some are really good, some are over our heads, but author Donna Roe Daniell nailed it with her book. Maybe life hits us with different issues, but what turns up in all of the research Daniell does can be for any woman struggling through midlife crisis. I wish I’d had this book a few years ago. A highlight for me what when Daniell decides to climb Mt. Killimanjaro. While climbing, she chose challenges that would push her to her limits. It was on that mountain that her life begins to change. Daniell’s found 5 mid life challeges on her midlife voyage. They as are listed in the book, and these 5 things can and will help you as you struggle through this midlife. I’m giving A Midlife Voyage to Transformation by Donna Roe Daniell Five Stars. I think this would be perfect for any woman, because most women struggle with something during their middle life years, and this can help.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

#iReadBookTours

Mickey on the Move: Farming is about a little boy who loves helping his mom on the farm with the animals, but one thing about Mickey is that he is deaf in both ears. I was excited to read and review the first book about Micky and his Cochlear implants that helps him hear, and this second book is just as exciting. Before Micky couldn’t go outside with his Cochlear implants because he couldn’t get them wet, but now he has the new Aqua Cochlear implants that allow Mickey to go outside and enjoy the sounds, and he didn’t have to worry about getting them wet.

I so much enjoyed this book. I fell in love with this sweet little boy in the first book, and I love him in this new one. And these Mickey books are about a real little boy. It is fun and interesting to read about the Cochlear implants that help Mickey hear the sounds he wouldn’t hear without them. Jenny Phelps does an amazing job bring this story to life with the vibrant and beautiful illustrations that fit the words so well on each page. I love the book cover with the same illustrations as well. This is a special little book that would fit well in any elementary school library as well as any daycare. It would be a fabulous read to help children understand these implants if they are around someone who has them. I love that this story shows how a child living with these Aqua Cochlear implants can enjoy life just as other children do. I encourage parents to pick up this book for your children as well.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

As Jo Fussner keeps the Marketplace humming, her heart dances with a joyous secret. Jo and Michael Wengerd, a shy nursery owner from a nearby town, have fallen hopelessly in love. When Michael buys a courting buggy, Jo is sure a proposal will follow. But she’ll have to work hard to gain her mother’s approval—because the widowed Drusilla Fussner is convinced that marriage will bring her daughter nothing but heartache.

To win Jo’s hand, Michael enlists his father’s help in convincing Drusilla to give the marriage her blessing—and perhaps even open her heart to new happiness of her own. . . . But just as Jo and Michael’s hope for their future grows, an even bigger obstacle looms. The Amish elders vote to forbid any maidel from working once she marries. Now Jo must choose between the beloved store she’s put her heart into, and the man she can’t live without. Conflicted, Jo will have to trust that anything is possible when true faith guides the way.

“What do you think of my new courting buggy, Jo?” he asked eagerly. “I ordered it from Saul Hartzler’s factory in December, and picked it up last night.”

Jo’s jaw dropped. A courting buggy! As they approached the open rig with a seat big enough for only two, her heart skipped like a happy schoolgirl’s. “It’s beautiful, Michael! Look at the way the wood shines. And what a wonderful shade of magenta you chose for your seat fabric.”

Michael smiled proudly. “I splurged on real leather, too,” he confided. “I figured this was the only time I’d be buying such a buggy, so I wanted it to be first-class for you, Jo. Wait here while I fetch my mare.”

Jo ran her finger along the buggy’s black wood, polished to such a shine that she could see her reflection in it. Deacon Saul was known for producing a quality product—and he hadn’t gotten wealthy by undercharging for his work, either. It wasn’t her place to ask Michael how many thousands of dollars he’d invested in his new rig. She and Mamm had considered ordering a new buggy a couple years ago, but when they’d heard what it would cost, they decided to make do with their old one.

“Gut girl—you’re doing fine,” Michael assured his horse as he approached Jo. “Josie, this is Starla, my new buggy mare.”

“Oh, aren’t you a pretty girl?” Jo said as she extended her hand. The mare looked young and angular, not yet in her prime. Her coat was a deep gray, with an irregular white star centered above her eyes. “You can keep her—and your new buggy—at our place!”

“Are you sure?” Michael handed Starla’s lead rope to Jo so he could hitch up his courting buggy. “I wouldn’t want your mamm to think we were overstepping her authority—”

“Starla can stay with us on my authority,” Jo interrupted. “If Mamm makes a fuss, I’ll take the blame. This is quite a surprise, Michael!” she added as she admired the way his black buggy and charcoal-colored mare looked together. Wasn’t it just like Michael to get all the details right?

He helped her up the steps and into his new rig. “I’m glad you see it that way, Josie-girl. I don’t intend to upset your mother, but I don’t plan on tiptoeing around her bad moods, either. We have a whole new life ahead of us—together. Shall we get on with it?”

Read an Excerpt

Jo Fussner gripped the pew bench in her excitement, thrumming with joy as she gazed across the center of the room at Michael Wengerd. As newehockers, they had front row seats at Molly and Marietta Helfings’ double wedding, which was about to begin now that the church service had concluded. In his black pants and vest, with a white shirt that glowed in the March sunshine that streamed through the window, Michael looked so handsome and elegant that Jo still wondered what he saw in a bulky, big-boned woman like her. But the love shining in his gray-blue eyes as he returned her gaze had the power to make her feel beautiful beyond belief.

Michael might’ve stayed in Queen City over the winter to make things easier for me, but his face still reflects his deep feelings for me—his belief that we should be together. It’s a miracle even more special than springtime, Lord, and for that I thank You!

When Bishop Jeremiah Shetler smiled at Marietta and Molly, the brides rose from the pew bench. In their dresses of deep teal, adorned with aprons made of crisp white organdy, they looked fresh and lovely as they centered themselves before the bishop with their grooms on either side of them. Pete Shetler appeared as nervous as Jo had ever seen him—until Molly’s reassuring smile brought the dimples back into his playful grin. Widowed nearly a year ago, Glenn Detweiler offered his elbow to slender Marietta, who took it with a dreamlike sigh as he placed his hand over hers.

Lydianne Christner, another of the twins’ side-sitters, leaned closer to Jo. “It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for!” she whispered happily. As the bishop’s fiancée, the pretty blond teacher was anticipating her own wedding in May, after school let out.

On Lydianne’s other side, redheaded Regina leaned forward to share her excitement, as well. “And your turns are coming!” she put in. “Last year at this time, who could’ve believed that every one of us confirmed maidels would find the man of her dreams?”

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I was do glad to take a trip back to morning star and see all of my friends there. I feel as though they are family. The Wengerd’s are back again, though Jo’s mamm pretty much ran the father/son duo off her property and out of her dawdy house. Jo’s mom tended to show herself, but it ends up she was hurting and couldn’t help her outburst. But does her attitude get better and does she still shoot off her mouth to everyone trying to help her?

This is an awesome addition to this series. I loved the Amish people and this special small community. I like how the Marketplace better pulls this community together, through their fellowship with each other when the shops are open, as well as the money it brings in to help each family, as well as they money the church fund is getting to help if there is a need. What a fun place to visit on Saturday’s and purchase your favorite items. Too bad we don’t have something like that In our area. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the phenomenally job Charlotte does in researching and writing this sweet series. I hope we are in for more of this series and all of these wonderful characters, but we need to wait and see. If you enjoy Amish reads, Love Blooms in Morning Star by Charlotte Hubbard is a must read for you. And don’t forget to check out all of the series. I’m giving ING this book Five Stars.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

#IREADBOOKTOURS

Semper Fi Brothers: A Hero’s Dangerous Journey for Redemption by A.C. Turner was and interesting read for me. The beginning ot the book was fun because it mentions things that brought back memories for me when I was young. Though I don’t remember when a two-bedroom bungalow could be purchased for $4,400. I enjoyed getting to know some of the characters and others I didn’t relate to that well. The 1940’s and 1950’s wasn’t a time that racial issues were so popular, but it was mentioned in the book about a racial couple and I didn’t have a problem with it. I did like couples child, Shamus. There’s quiet a bit that goes on in this book, with the war, and then the problems they had afterward. I enjoyed the bit of humor in the story, especially when Patrick decides to follow his young son William one night to see why he was so secretive about where he was going. The scene a little bit later was hilarious. And yes you have to read the book to fine out. I think anyone who enjoys stories about Marines or military stories would enjoy reading this one. I’m giving this one Four Stars.

Meet the Author:

A. C. Turner’s writing career began in the 1980s with a focus on screenplays. In that time, and with the help of his agent, Anne Getty, he was able to option two of them, Shoplift and Hercules Down and Out, to major film companies. Unfortunately, neither went into production, but that didn’t stop the Los Angeles Times from featuring him on the front page of their Sunday edition on up-and-coming writers in Los Angeles. He then moved on to write two plays, Chickenscratch and Down and Out in Sioux Falls, which were produced at the Hayworth Theatre in Los Angeles. He achieved all of this while raising three kids and coaching high school and junior college football, predominantly in inner-city Los Angeles. After taking twenty years off from writing, he got the itch back in his mid-fifties. He wrote Semper Fi Brothers as a screenplay and entered it in Final Draft’s screenwriting contest, where it placed third out of nine thousand. The story was inspired by the military exploits of his career-soldier dad and his three overseas tours in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam as well as his Army daughter’s four tours, including one in Afghanistan. The script was given to a large production company again, which was exciting at first, but when Covid-19 hit and the script found itself on the back burner, he decided to run with it and turn it into a novel, feeling the story was too inspirational not to be told.

Dangerous Beauty by Melissa Koslin

Dangerous  Beauty

Author: Melissa Koslin
Genre: Mystery/Suspense
Release Date: September 6, 2022

My Rating: Five Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What is the price of freedom?

Liliana Vela hates the term victim. She’s not a victim, she’s a fighter. Stubborn and strong with a quiet elegance, she’s determined to take back her life after escaping the clutches of human traffickers. But she can’t stay safely in America–unless the man who aided in her rescue is serious about his unconventional proposal to marry her.

Meric Toledan was just stopping at a service station for a bottle of water. Instead, he becomes the key to Liliana’s rescue. If he can keep his secrets hidden, his wealth and position afford him many resources to help her. But the mysterious buyer who funded her capture will not sit idly by while his prize is stolen from him.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

When Meric Toledan stopped at a service station for water, he didn’t expect to rescue a woman from men who were going to hurt her. Neither did he expect to ask the woman to marry her. But he did. No what is he suppose to do? Liliana Vela was glad to be rid of the guys who abducted her, she’s not sure about living with the guy who saved her from a future that was sure to be devastating. Not sure about her future, she has no choice but to follow along with what her new husband has planned.

I am always so touched by stories of human trafficking, because it really happens, and probably much more than we know. And my heart goes out to the children and teens that are pulled into this tragic lifestyle. Liliana and Meric were such good characters, and though they both had baggage in their past, it was unique situations and I have no idea if I would have handled things as they did. I like Meric’s kind heart, and especially when it came to helping people. Thus why the marriage, its the safest way to make sure Liliana is safe. He does seem to have some dark secrets he can’t expose, which makes Liliana wonder what he does. I really like Liliana as well, she’s feisty, determined and independent, and will do whatever it takes to stop the people who abducted her. There are so many twists and turns in this book, as well as many secrets, but I do like the way Koslin pulls it altogether in the end. The ending brings a few surprises, as well as as a comfortable ending that you will enjoy. If you enjoy a.good suspense thriller that will keep you awake for many hours, this is one you need to try. Melissa Koslin is a fairly new author, and I encourage you to give her a try.

GENRE: YA Dystopian

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Just when Areum – daughter of a privileged family in the totalitarian state of Choson (North Korea) – thought she was free from her personal prison, her world collapses around her as her family is taken away in the middle of the night to a hell-like camp in the mountains where people who have strayed from the righteous path are brutally re-educated through blood, sweat, tears, and starvation.
There she has to fight for survival together with the family she hates and is forced to re-evaluate every aspect of her life until then: her deep resentment toward her twin sister; her view of her father in the face of mounting evidence that he is a traitor with the blood of millions of fellow countrymen on his hands; and even her love and affection for the Great General – the eternal savior and protector of Choson, whom she had always considered her true father.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Note from the author:
Have you ever wondered what the world looks like when seen through an indoctrinated mind?
This is a topic that has intrigued me for as long as I can remember, so when I came up with the idea to write a book many years ago, I decided to create it from the viewpoint of a victim of indoctrination… which in the end became Areum (the protagonist of the story).
What I try to explore in this story is how deep the indoctrination of a 14-year old girl can run and how much “reality” it can be exposed to before breaking… if it will break at all. As a comparison, the defectors from North Korea who arrive in South Korea are isolated for three months in a de-programming facility called Hanawon before they are allowed to join society where they go through this process in a more controlled (and less brutal) way than Areum.
I hope you will enjoy this slightly different take on the dystopian genre!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Background of the book

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The JUCHE series, which so far consists of four books, is set in North Korea at the onset of the famine that ravaged the country between 1994-1998. It follows a brainwashed and bratty gymnast who lives a privileged life in the capital and whose biggest problem in life is that she hates her family. That changes quickly, however, when her entire family is arrested and sent to a ruthless re-education camp in the mountains and they have to join forces to survive the starvation, hard labor, and constant executions.
I chose to write on this topic because all of this is still happening in North Korea today, and I chose to make the protagonist a victim of the state propaganda so that the reader can experience her transformation through her eyes and her mind. I got the idea for this when doing research for the series. In one of the documentaries about North Korea that I watched, there was a young woman who had succeeded in escaping to China but had to leave her family behind. The documentary team then helped her to get her sister out as well, but when they had their happy sister reunion in the apartment in China, the younger sister was so indoctrinated that she didn’t believe anything negative the older sister said about North Korea, its regime, and the Kim family. It ended with her getting on a bus and going back to the border to sneak back in. This really astounded me because I had never seen indoctrination trumping family in that way before, and I decided to make that the theme of my story.
I think this is an important topic to write about because I believe it’s just as important now as it ever has been to understand the destructive power of indoctrination. It’s happening before our very eyes in Russia in regard to their invasion of Ukraine where people who tell the truth risk 15 years in a Siberian prison camp. And it’s happening within Qanon and other conspiracy theory groups. What’s dangerous – which is the same for my fictional protagonist, Areum – is that no indoctrinated person knows that they are indoctrinated. They firmly believe that they are the defenders of the truth – and many would do anything to fight for it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt One:

Cranes sang songs of joy from the mountain tops.

Double rainbows appeared in the sky.

The aggressors from the west were defeated. The invaders from the east were expunged. The traitors from the south were put at bay.

The people of Choson were finally free to create their own destiny, and so a hermit kingdom of people’s rule rose from the ashes, and the doors to the enemies of the outside world were closed, never to be opened again.

The world around them moved on. Years passed. Decades passed. Peace and prosperity spread throughout the world, and nothing was heard from the secluded hermit paradise.

Then one day, people started emerging from its closed borders. The stories they brought with    them were, however, not of a paradise on earth. Instead, what they depicted were horrors so vile and cruel that they almost exceeded human comprehension.

Little had the people of the kingdom known when they closed its doors to the outside world, that the vilest beast of all was still lurking among their midst, and as soon as the curtains had been drawn, the beast unleashed its reign of terror upon the people, not stopping until it had crushed and enslaved every soul within its reach.

The beast now rules the kingdom from a throne of human misery and agony.

No one alive has ever encountered this beast, but everybody knows its name.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Adria Carmichael is a writer of dystopian fiction with a twist. When she is not devouring dystopian and post-apocalyptic content in any format – books, movies, TV-series and PlayStation games – she is crafting the epic and highly-addictive Juche saga, her 2020 debut novel series that takes place in the brutal, totalitarian nation of Choson. When the limit of doom and gloom is reached, a 10K run on a sunny day or binging a silly sitcom on a rainy day is her go-to way to unwind.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Off Broadway, A Marriage Drama by William A Glass centers around Dave and Cindy, a married couple who live in a Manhattan appartment during the 1970’s and 1980’s with a lot of history and fun facts I remembered as I read the book. The old cigarette machine was fun, it’s been years since I’ve seen one of those. But the pressures of life and demands of their jobs kept the stress and emotions running high. I liked and connected with some of the characters, others I didn’t. I think it’s because I was a bit put off at the unexpected (for me) first pages of the book and it set the tone as bad for me and I just couldn’t really getting into the book. I did follow Dave and Cindy, in hopes their marriage would make it. And you have to read the book to find out. If you enjoy books with a lot of drama throughout, I think you would like this one.

EXCERPT:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nothing. Clean as a whistle. Until my massive hand grasped hold of something, something which must have blended into its background so perfectly that I hadn’t even spotted it. Something alive, nestling under the co-pilot’s seat. I couldn’t believe it. A live gromeline. Trembling, possibly with fury, and trying in vain to squeeze back. Grabbing my trophy – I could feel its hot little heart throbbing like an injury against my palm – I hopped out of the plane so fast that my wound protested.
‘Bully!’
Bully raised one eyebrow. Two would have been overkill.
‘Bully, you are not going to believe this. I found a gromeline!’ The gromeline – only about fifteen centimetres – bit my finger, hard, even though I could have easily crushed its entire body with my fist – and probably would have, had I been a tester, and not merely disguised as one.
Feisty little gromeline. I flicked it lightly with my sausage-sized finger. When it protested, I growled, ‘Cheese it, munchkin,’ though I could feel it struggling obstreperously against my palm.
Bully was intrigued. ‘Is it genuine?’ ‘Of course it’s genuine. It just bit me, didn’t it?’
Bully probably considered this no proof. But they’re rarer than clean air these days and his fascination was obvious. Now gromelines come from the farthest galaxy so far discovered, can speak any tongue and own enviable mental powers. They are also brave to the point of stupidity and ludicrously small. This one was mouse-coloured – they can be spectacular – with tiny red eyes. Few humans have ever seen one.
MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
#iReadBookTours
Star loved to play outside with nature. One day a she met little Butterfly that was her friend, and she named him Twinkle. Star and Twinkle always played together outside until one day Star went outside and Twinkle wasn’t there. This made Star so sad, and I was actually sad for Star too! Star kept watching for Twinkle each day and was so sad, until one day she receives something that makes her happy again.
This is such a sweet story. Star is a beautiful little girl and it was watching her play with her friend Twinkle. I like that author Melissa Stuart encourages children to respect and play with insects such as a butterfly.
Adding to the book are the beautiful and wonderful illustrations by Kate Solenova! I love the beautiful colors, like colors of butterflies and the Sunflowers, and all of the illustrations on each page. Kate Solenova, you did an amazing job bringing this story to life! I would love seeing this book in any elementary school library or daycare library.
Movie Review: A Case for Heaven
#CaseForHeavenMIN #MomentumInfluencerNetwork
My Rating: Five Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
THE CASE FOR HEAVEN is based on the new book by best-selling author Lee
Strobel, who wrote The Case For Christ.
Featuring interviews with best-selling author John Burke, world-renowned pastor Francis Chan, the late Evangelist Luis Palau and more.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

THE CASE FOR HEAVEN will be exclusively on Pure Flix starting July 15th!

“Viewers will be surprised, captivated and encouraged by ‘The Case for Heaven,’ a beautiful and compelling film. It will dispel many of their misconceptions about the afterlife. I’m thrilled with the enthusiastic reception the documentary has received so far – and I can’t wait for an even wider audience to experience it.” –Lee Strobel.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Synopsis: We all want to know what happens after we die. In THE CASE FOR
HEAVEN, best-selling author and investigative journalist Lee Strobel explores the evidence for the afterlife in order to address man’s biggest fear: death. Inspired by his own brush with death, Strobel searches for answers to the most profound questions we all have, about heaven, hell, and Near-Death Experiences. Featuring interviews with experts and skeptics, THE CASE FOR HEAVEN will challenge, encourage and inspire as Strobel dares to probe the most important question. If there is a heaven, can we prove it?
We are curious by nature. Taking on the big questions about heaven, hell and the afterlife, The Case For Heaven—a documentary based on the best-selling book by Lee Strobel—invites you to carefully investigate the knowable and respond with faith to the unknowable.
ONE LINE DESCRIPTION
From the best-selling author and former atheist turned Christian apologist Lee Strobel, uncover the next investigation: What happens after we die?
Documentary from best-selling author and former atheist turned Christian apologist Lee Strobel. He examines near-death experiences and tries to determine what happens after life on earth.
REAL-LIFE STORIES / INTERVIEWS
  • A documentary based on the new book by Lee Strobel
  • Harry Broom
  • Howard Storm – emergency surgery required, atheist and had a near-death experience in a “dank, dark hallway” where individuals became increasingly violent. He suddenly remembered the song “Jesus Loves Me” when was a child. When he asked Jesus to save him, a light appeared and he was brought back to life.
  • Eric Owyoung – musician – wrote the music for “The Case for Heaven.”
  • John Burke – author of “Imagine Heaven” – interviewed people with lots to lose and nothing to gain from discussing their experiences.
  • Pamela Reynolds – brain aneurysm surgery
  • Steve Caballero – professional skateboarder – atheist to believer
  • Jon Steingard – Hawk Nelson band member – believer to atheist/agnostic
  • Francis Chan – author, pastor – “Erasing Hell: What God Said About Eternity, and the Things We’ve Made Up.” His mother died in childbirth and his father blamed him for that.
  • Luis Palau – lifelong evangelist, dying of stage four cancer – Lee visited and interviewed him before his death.
Synopsis / Background
  • Lee Strobel had a medical emergency and a near-death experience
  • What happens next? What happens if I close my eyes and don’t open them again in this world.
  • Quest for Immortality: fear of death, the pursuit of a legacy through “immortality project.” People will commit heinous acts in an attempt to be remembered forever.
  • Search for the Soul: does the soul survive physical death? What is the evidence we have a soul and that it can survive?
  • Lee talks about attending a Rolling Stone and Tina Turner concert in the 1980s and comes to the conclusion that “you just had to be there” because words can’t describe it.
  • Lee admits that he was skeptical about near-death experiences.
  • Near-Death Experience: interviews with people who went through them and have researched them.
  • The commonality in accounts is a life review where individuals get to relive portions of their lives or see what is happening during the time they were dead.
  • Lots of dissenting voices in the Christian community on near-death experiences.
  • The pursuit for proof of God – would a loving Father really hide Himself and require blind belief from children He loves so much?
  • Concept of hell – heaven is a gift only if we are willing to receive it. Consequently, being separated from God during life means you will be separated from Him for eternity.
  • Hell is not a torture chamber, it’s torment to live an eternity without God’s presence in our lives.
  • What is faith? Biblical faith is taking a step in the same direction that the evidence points in – it’s very logical and rational.
  • Jesus has the answers about the afterlife because He experienced it.
  • The Case for Christ: the 4 E’s that support the case for Christ: Execution, Early Reports, Empty Tomb, Eyewitness. Execution (Christ was truly dead after the crucifixion); Rose from the dead (Early reports within months of execution from those who witnessed it); Empty tomb (opponents of Jesus even admitted it was empty, tried to explain away why it was empty); Eyewitness (9 ancient sources, inside and outside the New Testament, about the encounter with Risen Christ).
  • Edge of Eternity: Luis was anxious to go and he wasn’t afraid of death. Loss of contact, loss of the relationship, those of us who are left behind.
  • Attacks by Satan at the very end of your life tempt you to question the decisions you’ve made throughout life.
  • Natural to mourn the loss of physical, earthly life.
Themes
  • People fear death and try to compensate by leaving a legacy
  • Distractions of this world help people avoid thinking about death
  • Can science and belief in God coexist? Does free will exist?
    • “To be a thinking person is to live out what it means to be made in the image of God”
  • How do these near-death experiences intersect with what the Bible says?
  • Christian leaders hesitate to discuss hell because it creates a lot of fear
  • Doubts whether we are actually loved and every person wants to be loved – it’s up to us to open our hearts to God to let His love in and reveal that to others
Bible Verses
  • Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” – Luke 23:43 (NIV)
  • We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. – 2 Corinthians 5:8 (NIV)
  • Jesus wept. – John 11:30-40 (NIV)
MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
The Case For Heaven – Movie – Lee Strobel – MY REVIEW
The movie, The Case For Heaven is based on the book by the same title by Lee Strobel. In this movie/documentary, Strobel will answer the fearful questions on most of the minds of everyone today. Is there life after death, and Is Heaven real? Lee Strobel explores the evidence on the afterlife, as well as interviewing experts on the subject, and people who have had near death experiences. Through in-depth study in God Word and through his interviews, Lee Strobel finds substantial evidence that there is a real Heaven where those who know the Lord will go when they die. And we don’t have to fear death and what will happen. God has it all under control. We trust Him.
I have read several of Lee Strobel’s books but this is the first movie I have had the honor of watching. I thoroughly enjoyed The Case for Heaven. I learned so much watching this film. I’ve never feared or wondered about Heaven, but it was sometimes fearing death and what it would be like the moment you breathed your last breath and entered Heaven. I am so glad that this movie gave me insights into so many things I’ve always wondered, and helped me understand why I was fearing Heaven. I want this movie and book because it will be an awesome resource to keep going back to.
Probably my favorite part of the movie was the recording of the last words to Lee Strobel from the late pastor and evangelist Luis Palau. Palau was in his last stages of life on earth, and he was ready for Heaven, no fear of death because he knew he would meet the Lord in Heaven. And the most important part of the movie was when Strobel, and the others pointed those watching to Jesus. Explaining that the only way to go to Heaven to meet Jesus when we die is through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and we must believe in Him for our salvation. I am giving this wonderful and so much needed film Five Stars and I wish I could give it more.
This is a well thought out and produced movie, one that I feel is so important to our world today, and I plan to make sure everyone I know and others around the world that I can reach understand that Heaven IS REAL and we can think about death without the fear of the unknown. I am pointing everyone I can to this amazing movie and the clear details it teaches. I want to encourage everyone who reads my review to check out this movie for you and your family, then pass along the information so that others will watch this as well.
