In this powerful retelling of the Book of Esther, blonde, blue-eyed Jewess Hadassah Benjamin feels abandoned by God when she is saved from a firing squad only to be pressed into service by SS-Kommandant Colonel Aric von Schmidt at the WWII transit camp of Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia. In order to maintain her false identity as his secretary, Stella Muller, she must stand by and watch as her own people are sent to Auschwitz. Suspecting her employer is a man of hidden sympathies, Stella cautiously appeals to him on behalf of those in the camp while she secretly takes her own risks to save them. As Aric’s compassion gives her hope, she fights a growing attraction to a man she should despise as an enemy. When her bravery finally brings her to the point of ultimate sacrifice, she has only her faith to lean upon. Perhaps God placed her there for such a time as this. MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
For Such A Time is a very good read, but sometimes it was difficult to read because of the situations that were happening. I’ve read many of the hateful things said about this book in other reviews, but I really enjoyed this book. It is very well written, and it’s clear Ms. Breslin did a lot if research on these topics. Writing about World War II, the Jews and Nazi’s, it was a lot of dark moments in this story. But this author was able to bring many lighter moments to the story as well. These main characters were well thought out and developed well in the story, and the scenes were so vividly described, I would close my eyes and imagine being there. If you are in for a good WWII read, give this one a try.
