MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

What a pleasure to return to Huckleberry Hill and my favorite matchmaking couple, Anna and Felty Helmuth. This time it is a little different with this duo. Instead of helping one of their grandchildren find love, this adorable couple helps one an already married granddaughter with her marriage. And they had to do a little roughing it in order to help.

I love this Huckleberry Hill Series by Jennifer Beckstrand. Each book keeps getting better and better. The story here is a bit of a clever twist on the way Mary Anne leaves her husband. It ends up involving the whole family, and yes, Anna and Felty was right there with them. And poor Jethro has the shock of his life. With a group of the best characters around, this beautifully written story with give you hours if entertainment and enjoyment. The entire book is just plain fun! It is impossible no to laugh at the humor throughout the story, especially coming from Anna and Felty. This couple is hilarious! I highly recommend that you check out Home on Huckleberry Hill, as well as the other books in this series, and join Anna and Felty as they help out their grandchildren. You never know who will be the next one on Anna’s list! I hope you love them as well as I did!

Things at the Petersheim house are getting too crowded for eight-year-old twins Alfie and Benji. As if things weren’t bad enough with three older brothers hogging all the bacon at breakfast and using more than their fair share of toilet paper, Mammi and Dawdi Petersheim have to move in because of Dawdi’s stroke. If Alfie and Benji have any hope of getting their own bedrooms, they have to get rid of their annoying brothers, and the only way to convince their brothers to move out is to make each of them fall in love. What could be so hard about that?

Abraham Petersheim is known as a man of few words. He’s painfully shy and doesn’t see the need to prattle on like other boys in the community do. That’s why he can’t understand his unexpected attraction to Emma Wengerd. For sure and certain she’s pretty, but she also has five or six boys buzzing around her all the time, and she seems to be constantly annoyed with Abraham and his little brothers. Emma would never be interested in someone as boring as Abraham, and he could never set his sights on someone as wunderbarr as Emma.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

With the Petersheim twins, who needs a matchmaker? Alfie and Benji were adorable as they tried to find Abraham a wife. The twins just had to get out of the basement, they can’t sleep on a blow up mattress forever.

The twins are at it again. And they are adorable. They do pretty good for their age, to come up with the plans they come up with. And i link and enjoy the humor they come up with. They will keep you laughing for most of the story. They were pretty smart to figure out how to make Abraham talk to Emma! This gave the plot a lot of depth, and gave Abraham a reason to talk. I really enjoyed Abraham and Emma’s character. Enjoyed watching Abraham come out if his shell and actually talk to a girl. A girl he never thought he woukd have a chance with. All around, this story, and the twins plans ended up working out for the good of everyone.

And in her usual fantastic writing, author Jennifer Beckstrand takes readers on another enjoyable and humorous journey of matchmaking. I don’t really think this series will match up to the Huckleberry Hill series, for me, that one just can’t be topped. But this series is going to be another Fabulous read by this wonderful author. I highly recommend that you check out Abraham, and the rest of the Petersheim Brothers series.

Benji pushed his coffee cake around his plate with his finger. “Maybe we could keep that stray dog.”

Maybe they could keep the dog. Alfie’s heart started pounding. A dog could find them if they ever got lost in the woods. A dog could fetch sticks and bring Dat his slippers. A dog would eat crumbs off the floor. Mamm would never have to mop again.

Bitsy shrugged. “That’s up to your mamm.”

Alfie’s heart sank to his toes. “Mamm would never let us have a dog. She won’t even let me have a goldfish.”

“I have a pet spider,” Benji said.

Alfie popped a small bite of coffee cake into his mouth. “He’s not your pet. He just lives in the corner of the cellar and kills other spiders.”

“You tried to spray him,” Benji said, “and I saved his life. He’s my pet now.”

Bitsy nodded. “Spiders are gute pets. They feed themselves and don’t poop on the carpet.”

Benji sat very still before wrinkling his forehead like he did when he was upset. “We need to help that dog.”

Alfie wanted a dog as much as anybody, but they had to be sensible. They’d been asking Mamm for a dog ever since they could talk. “Mamm won’t let us.”

Benji started crying. “But he’s going to get gassed.”

Bitsy reached over and patted Benji’s arm. “He might not get gassed. The pound might find a nice family that wants to adopt him. People like chocolate labs. I’m told they’re cute.”

Benji caught his breath and suddenly stopped crying, as if someone had turned off a faucet. “Do girls like chocolate lamps?”

“Chocolate labs?” Bitsy folded her arms. “Well, I’m a girl and I don’t think he’s cute, but most girls love dogs. Do you remember Vernon Schmucker? Poor fellow had a face like a potato, and the girls ignored him. One night he brought a puppy to the gathering, and he was surrounded by girls all night. That’s how he met his wife.”

Benji jumped from his chair and threw his arms around Alfie, making Alfie spill milk down his new shirt. “Hey. Watch it.”

“Alfie, girls like dogs!”

Benji was a good partner, but sometimes he made no sense. “So?”

“If Emma Wengerd saw us walking our chocolate lamp down the street, she’d run out of her house to pet him.”

Alfie’s heart started pounding. Benji was the best bruder in the world. “We could bring Abraham with us.”

Benji got more and more excited with each word. “And they could talk about dogs and chickens and maybe start kissing.”

Alfie set his milk on the table. “We’ve got to catch that dog.”

Author Jennifer Beckstrand proves she can write more than Amish stories with the writing of Jessie and James! I love this historical western story about Jesse and her family, and James, who is on a mission to find gold for his company. Take this mixture of old time western living, the mighty Gold Rush era and its many miners, stolen money, a holdup, kidnapping and second chances, and Oh My! We have a story that will grab our attention and warm our hearts for many hours to come. I fell in love with these characters very early in the story. It is so realistic, I felt as though I was there witnessing everything. I can’t wait for the second book in this series. Oh and I also love the way Jessie’s parents, especially her mom, was so loving and forgiving. This is truly a story of love, forgiveness and second chances.

Jessie and James is my first published Western historical novel, and I couldn’t be more excited. The first book I ever wrote was a historical Western, and I’ve been wanting to write another one for ten years. (That first Western is still hanging around my house somewhere. I might decide to publish it next. J) For my research, I traveled to a real mining town about two hours from my house. Yes, it really is named Eureka, and it was a boomtown in the 1880s, the period in which my book is set. I met an old-timer in Eureka who told me some fascinating stories about mining then and now.

Did you know that you may own the ground your house sits on, but you only own it to sixty feet deep? So a mining company can come in and dig a mine right under your house, and it’s perfectly legal. Many mines were dug straight down or in any direction that would get them to ore faster. In the 1880s in Eureka, often they’d dig straight down using only picks, shovels, and dynamite. A plumb bob was utilized to make sure their tunnels were straight up and down. They usually dug down 600 feet then drifted horizontally a couple hundred feet, then dug down again. Some mines went deeper than 1800 feet. Nowadays, there aren’t many mines that deep. They’re more dangerous, so they’re too expensive to insure.

In Jessie and James, James is an ex-cowboy turned geologist looking for gold. Jessie is a feisty, independent woman who runs a boarding house with her parents and thinks Eureka needs a little more fire-and-brimstone preaching to keep the incorrigible miners in line. Jessie doesn’t want anything to do with a gold digger, and she’s willing to use her shotgun to run James off. But James doesn’t scare that easy, especially when the woman on the other end of that shotgun might turn out to be the love of his life.

Jessie and James is full of shotguns, bandits, and heart-stopping romance. Don’t miss it!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I am thrilled with this new series by Jennifer Beckstrand. I love the sweet romance with Andrew and Mary. But it wasn’t an easy road for them when Mary first came back to their community unmarried and pregnant. It was Bitsy at the Honeybee farm who gives her a chance. Spending t in me with Mary, Andrew starts seeing something in her that changes his mind about her. And especially since his brothers are so attached to her.

The characters in this story are amazing. Each one is unique in their own way and and add their own interesting personality to the story. My favorite has to be Bitsy, shes something else. I love the humor in this story, it kept me wanting to keep reading to see what happens next. The Honeybee farm is a wonderful and fun place to be. And I even liked reading about the bees there! Each part of the story was wonderfully crafted to make this book an awesome read. I love Jennifer Beckstrand’s books. She has a way with words that grabs you from the beginning of the story and keeps your attention. If you haven’t read any of her books, Andrew is a good one to start with!

If you enjoyed The Honeybee Sisters, you’re going to love The Petersheim Brothers, or the Peanut Butter Brothers as they’re known in their small Amish community of Bienenstock, Wisconsin. The Petersheim brothers work their small farm and make peanut butter. The idea for The Petersheim Brothers series came when two of my friends and I were creating The Honeybee Sisters Cookbook. My friend Alicia suggested I write a book about Peanut Butter Brothers, and the idea stuck.

One of my favorite characters in my Amish romances is Aunt Bitsy, the irrepressible, unconventional woman who raised the Honeybee Sisters, tried to chase off all their suitors, and then lit fireworks at their triple wedding. In Andrew, the first book in the Petersheim Brothers series, Aunt Bitsy takes in a girl who has jumped the fence and wants to come back to the Amish community to have her baby. Aunt Bitsy is still protecting her dandelions and her bees, still dyeing her hair all sorts of bright colors, and still praying to Gotte right out loud.

Andrew is about forgiveness, second chances, and learning to love. It will have you laughing and crying, and you might just fall in love with two of the most mischievous little boys in Wisconsin. Enjoy.

In honor of the Peanut Butter Brothers, I want to share one of our favorite family recipes. These bars are perfect for picnics, parties, and potlucks. They’re easy and delicious!

 

Peanut Butter Bars

Cream together:

1 cup butter

1 cup brown sugar

1 cup sugar

Blend In:

2 unbeaten eggs

1 tsp. baking soda

2/3 cup peanut butter

½ tsp. salt

1 tsp. vanilla

Stir In:

2 cups flour

2 cups quick oats

 

Spread mixture in greased jelly-roll pan or large cookie sheet.

Bake: 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Do not overbake. Remove from oven.

 

Sprinkle on:

1 ¼ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips.

Let stand five minutes.

 

For peanut butter mixture on top, combine:

½ cup sifted powdered sugar

¼ cup peanut butter

2 to 4 Tbs. evaporated milk

Mix well.

 

The chocolate chips will melt on the bars. Spread melted chocolate evenly. Drizzle peanut butter mixture on top. Cool completely. Cut into bars.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

I love Jennifer Beckstrand’s Huckleberry Hill Series! And I am so glad she is continuing with Anna and Felty’s matchmaking skills. A Courtship on Huckleberry Hill continues with Anna trying to bring granddaughter Elsa Helmuth and Sam Sensenig together, but their efforts seem to be blocked at every angle. And Sam Sensenig certainly is not interested in Anna and Felty’s granddaughter. Especially since she is probably 40 years old and nothing close to attractive. Oh, what Sam doesn’t know will sure surprise him!

That Jennifer Beckstrand can write so many books about Essentially the same thing, is in itself intriguing! Each story written about the matchmaking of 80+year old Anna and Felty Helmuth is just do sweet and interesting, full of adventure and faith, you have to love them. And Anna and Felty are the grandma and granddaddy everyone wish for. And I was blessed to have such grandparents, as well as having parents that were such grandparents to our children. Maybe thats why I love this entire series so much!

I love Else’s strong and determined personality and Sam’s storming into the schoolroom to let Else have a piece of his mind was humorous in itself. Sam’s attitude makes me smile because I know several young men with just the same attitude. This book obviously relates to me a lot. These along with the many other scenes, humorous and serious are reasons you want to be sure and read this new installment in the Huckleberry Hill series! You will sure not be disappointed!

I have a very special place in my heart for teachers. My dad was a high school math teacher. My mother taught second grade for over twenty years. My son-in-law taught choir in high school, and my daughter taught seventh-grade science. Another daughter taught American history labs at the university and still another daughter taught classes for a youth summer program.

Elsie Stutzman is a dedicated teacher who was dismissed from her last teaching job in Ohio and is trying to make a fresh start and a good impression in Bonduel, Wisconsin. Unfortunately one of her students, Wally Sensenig, is making things difficult for her, and Wally’s hot-headed older brother seems determined to get her fired. But Elsie is a dedicated teacher, too stubborn to back down and too steadfast to give up on anybody.

Elsie’s grandparents, Anna and Felty Helmuth, have other plans for her. They want her to fall in love with one of the local boys, but they’re finding it a little difficult to get the two young people together.

Teachers have an immense impact on our lives. We all remember a favorite elementary school teacher who inspired a love of learning or a high school teacher who encouraged us to reach for greatness. One of my favorite teachers was Mrs. Zobell, who taught ninth grade English. I distinctly remember her reading “The Outsiders” out loud to our class. She had a way of making great books and great stories come to life, and she sparked a love of reading (and writing) that I will always be grateful for. The teacher who had the most impact on my life is my dad. He helped me through Calculus in high school and inspired me to major in math in college.

I hope we will take the time this month to thank the teachers in our lives for all they do for us and all they do for our kids.

Do you remember picking out your bride’s dress? The cake? Food? Location? The invitations? Weddings are fun, no matter how simple or extravagant. The marked event fills your heart with joy sharing in the special day with the bride and groom. I remember the day I married Ed, my best friend and soulmate. We planned the details together, and we still talk about what a heartwarming memory it is for us. I’m sure if you and I met for a girl’s chat, we’d enjoy hearing each other’s account of when we exchanged vows with our sweethearts.

Amish brides may not have the flowers, rings, and fancy food and cake, but they have their traditions and share in the excitement like we do. I enjoyed writing “Joshua’s Bride”. I hope you enjoy it to.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

The grandparents are at it again helping another grandchild find their one and only love. Suvie has already fell in love with Aaron, but after loosing his wife three years ago there would never be any happiness for him. But Aaron should have known Anna and Felty better than that!

Another wonderful story about the Huckleberry Hill characters. I just want to keep reading these books over and over again! Jennifer Beckstrand does a marvelous job of developing her characters into the sweetest people that quickly steel your heart strings! Aaron certainly did need help letting go of his deceased wife. Suvie was so completely different from her, but Aaron couldn’t help but like being around her. She did have her share of spunk, and was brave and determined to get what she wants.

If you haven’t met the Huckleberry Hill family, I’m telling you, you are missing out on some fabulous entertainment. Amish Brides is a wonderful way to meet this wonderful family. This is a short story so you will be able to read this one quick! Then I am sure you will go back for the rest of the books in the Huckleberry Hill family. Madeline and Joshua are just not being treated right by their Amish community. Madeline is not responsible for her sister leaving her Amish faith, but everyone, especially Joshua’s family. After all her sister was engaged to Madeline’s brother and they feared the same would happen to their other son. And tensions sour even more when Maddie adopts her sisters abandoned baby.

I felt so very bad for this couple. They were truly in love and neither of them showed any signs of leaving their faith and family. But Joshua’s family was down right rude to Maddie, no matter how nice she treated her. It was when Trouble comes to the family and Maddie was so sweet to help them that the Stutzman’s finally realized Maddie may not be so bad. But would Maddie still wish to free Joshua from marrying her because of his family?

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Reba doesn’t need to find her own husband, her three nieces are quite the matchmakers, after all they did succeed in finding a wife for their dad so they could have a mom. And Abrl is just the husband for Reba. The problem was, neither Reba nor Abel want love in their lives. But the three sisters are determined and will go to great lengths to accomplish what they set out to do.

This was such a sweet read. I loved these sweet sisters, they were so cute in deciding how to bring Abel and Reba together. Not that Abel and Reba enjoyed the situations they were put in. Especially when the two didn’t meet in the best of circumstances. I love Amy Lillard’s books and A Summer Wedding in Paradise was one of her best. The characters were so well developed they seem like family! I enjoyed everything about this book.

AMISH BRIDES is a book of three short stories by three of my favorite Amish authors. Each story is different but each of them will be a few hours of some of the best entertainment you will find to enjoy. I highly recommend this sweet book of three Brides that find the love of their lives.

Christmas is the perfect setting for “A Christmas Bakery on Huckleberry Hill” because Titus is one character who seems to have the spirit of Christmas in his heart all year long. When Katie Rose is homesick, Titus does his best to make her feel welcome and comfortable on Huckleberry Hill. He delivers her Christmas goodies, writes poetry for her, and sings Christmas songs. When he finally realizes he loves her, he’s going to have to use both Christmas goats and every trick in the book to convince her to marry him. MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

The first story is Kelly Long’s Baking Love on Ice Mountain which was just an ok story for me. Its a story of a young widow and her deceased husbands friend. They were both good at making cookies, and seemed to want to be the best cookie maker.

The next story is Jennifer Beckstrand’s  The Christmas Bakery of Huckleberry Hill

I love The Huckleberry Series, and was delighted to have another visit with this sweet family through The Christmas Bakery on Huckleberry Hill. Titus is the grandson in this book that Felty’s wife Anna decides needs a new wife, and of course she has just the right one picked out for him, they just don’t know it yet.

I love this couple and enjoy each story in this series. Felty is a sweet old man that everyone has to fall in love with, and Anna is just as adorable. Anna’s idea of a Christmas goat was hilarious, and as usual, I love how Felty goes along with everything his wife suggest. Titus coming to the house to feed that goat had him spending more time with the granddaughter, Katie Rose. The question is, who will Katie choose as a husband, the boy her father sends her there to get to know better, or will it be Titus, who treats her like she wants to be treated. Jennifer Beckstrand gives readers another wonderful story to love and enjoy. If you haven’t read any of this series, I would certainly read this book, and go back and read the others. You will have as much fun as I did reading these, I promise you!

The last story is about a little boy that needs heart surgery and his teacher organizes a fund raiser to pay for the surgery, and even though he is Amish, the story goes to the media and everyone is routing for his little one. It enjoyable to read how the Amish community and all around them came together for this little one.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Huckleberry Hill is sizzling again as the matchmakers choose another grandchild to help find a mate. This time Anna and Felty Helmuth takes in their grandson Aden. Maybe time spent with his grandparents will keep Aden out of trouble. And Anna has just the right young lady in mind for Aden, and it is Lily Eicher. Of course Lily and Aden know nothing about Anna and her mission, making this story much more interesting. Lily is so shy, the last thing she needs is someone like Aden the lead her astray, but don’t tell Anna that, because she already has her mind made up!

I love how Anna and Felty bring out the best in people. Aden wasn’t really a bad guy, but he always got in trouble trying to help someone out. He couldn’t help himself because he wanted to do what was right, but what he was doing was not the Amish way. It took the calm, understanding and wisdom from Felty and Anna to help him understand what was right. Sometimes thought Anna was very sneaky, and I just loved it! Throughout both of the books in this series, I have learned so much from the wisdom of these two adorable and precious people! Again in this book, Anna and Felty reminded me so much of my grandparents and their wisdom when talking to me. I cherish those times so much!

Again Jennifer Beckstrand gives her readers and outstanding story to read! This is such a delightful, enjoyable and fun read, one that you will think about a long time after you finish reading the book! Anna and Felty have a special place in my heart and I can’t wait to read what they have in store for us in the third book of this series! And oh, about the couple, you will surely enjoy the little details by Anna to place these two young people together, making sure they spent time together. The romance is oh so sweet! I know you will love it as much as I do!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND HER BOOKS

I grew up with a steady diet of William Shakespeare and Jane Austen. After all that literary immersion, I naturally decided to get a degree in mathematics, which came in handy when one of my six children needed help with homework. After my fourth daughter was born, I started writing. By juggling diaper changes, soccer games, music lessons, laundry, and two more children, I finished my first manuscript—a Western—in just under fourteen years.

I have always been fascinated by the Amish way of life and now write Inspirational Amish Romance. I am drawn to the strong faith of the Plain people and admire the importance they put on enduring family ties. I have visited and studied Amish communities in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin where I met with a bishop and a minister as well as several Amish mamms, dats, and children. It has always impressed me at what salt-of-the-earth people they are. My interactions with these kind people have been some of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I have a dear Amish friend with whom I correspond in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. She helps me keep my facts straight and gives me inspiration for my stories.

My goal is to write uplifting, inspiring stories with happy endings and hopeful messages. If my books make readers want to give themselves a big hug or jump up and down for joy, I’ve done my job. I am a member of Romance Writers of America and American Christian Fiction Writers and am represented by Mary Sue Seymour of The Seymour Agency.

I just love Moses’ grandparents Anna and Felty Helmuth and their matchmaking! They are so adorable, with Anna trying her new recipes and Felty singing and checking out license plates to find all of the states! These two elderly people make their home a pleasant and comfortable place for their family to visit. Lia was a sweet young lady and Anna seemed to see her for who she was. Lia’s parents are jerks, or so I think they are because they think the sun rises and sets in their daughter Rachel, and for Lia, she is treated like a maid, and treated like she is worthless! I got so irritated at them!! But that aside, I loved the calm and warming home of the Helmuth’s and the things they did to encourage Moses and Lia! Reading this made me miss my own grandparents and all of the sweet memories of staying at their home. Author Jennifer Beckstrand is an amazing writer and I love reading her stories. I can’t wait to read more of this precious couple and the other grandchildren that are in line for their sweet matchmaking. I highly recommend the Matchmakers of Huckleberry Hill Series and this first book, Huckleberry Hill!

After all that literary immersion, I naturally decided to get a degree in mathematics, which came in handy when one of my six children needed help with homework. After my fourth daughter was born, I started writing. By juggling diaper changes, soccer games, music lessons, laundry, and two more children, I finished my first manuscript—a Western—in just under fourteen years.

I have always been fascinated by the Amish way of life and now write Inspirational Amish Romance. I am drawn to the strong faith of the Plain people and admire the importance they put on enduring family ties. I have visited and studied Amish communities in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin where I met with a bishop and a minister as well as several Amish mamms, dats, and children. It has always impressed me at what salt-of-the-earth people they are. My interactions with these kind people have been some of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I have a dear Amish friend with whom I correspond in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. She helps me keep my facts straight and gives me inspiration for my stories.

My goal is to write uplifting, inspiring stories with happy endings and hopeful messages. If my books make readers want to give themselves a big hug or jump up and down for joy, I’ve done my job. I am a member of Romance Writers of America and American Christian Fiction Writers and am represented by Mary Sue Seymour of The Seymour Agency.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Kate’s Song is such a heartwarming story because Kate struggles between her singing and her Amish faith. Her main interest is God’s will for her life, but just what is His will? Is it her singing career or at home in her Amish community? And the Ordnung will not allow her to have both. Kate’s journey is a difficult one as she struggles to make a decision.

Jennifer Beckstrand is a new author for me, and I am very glad I had the opportunity to read and review Kate’s Song. I love how each author of Amish fiction has their own twist on their stories, and I love the writing style and the new twist on Amish fiction from Ms. Beckstrand! I really enjoyed getting to know the characters in this story, though some of them were frustrating at times! Kate was a sweetheart and of course I wanted the best for her, whatever it was! I love how the author weaves the story together with the Amish faith, worldly lifestyle with Kate’s music, the love of family, her struggles and difficulties, along with her faith in God, and the happiness she finds through following what God’s wants for her life. Kate’s Song is writing at it’s best, and I look forward to reading more books by author Jennifer Beckstrand!
