Note from the Author

I’m so excited for the conclusion of my American Wonders series! I have always loved the wonder and majesty of our national parks, in part because my father introduced me to them. He would have been tickled with A View Most Glorious, set on Mt. Rainier, because that was his mountain. We hiked or camped on it nearly every weekend when I was growing up, and I live 45 minutes from the gates of the national park today. In celebration of the release of this third volume, I’m delighted to offer this prize pack, with each of the books in the series in paperback, a collection of nine vintage-style postcards from the parks featured (the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, and Mt. Rainier), and a poster that speaks to the heart of the story: The best view comes after the hardest climb. May all your views be glorious!

A View Most Glorious

By Regina Scott
Christian Historical Romance
Paperback, E-book & Audiobook, 368 Pages
October 5, 2021 by Revell

Reluctant socialite Coraline Baxter longs to live a life of significance and leave her mark on the world. When her local suffragette group asks her to climb Mount Rainier to raise awareness of their cause, she jumps at the chance, even though she has absolutely no climbing experience. If she can do it, any woman can do it. And after her mother issues an ultimatum–that Cora marry the man of her mother’s choosing if she is not successful–Cora must do it. But she can’t do it alone.

Noted mountain guide Nathan Hardee initially refuses to help Cora, but has a change of heart when he sees what is at stake. He knows enough about the man Cora’s mother has chosen to know that the headstrong young woman should have nothing to do with him, much less marry him.

Climbing Rainier will require all of Cora’s fortitude and will lead her and Nathan to rediscover their faith in God and humanity. These two loners make unlikely partners in righting a wrong and may just discover that only together is the view most glorious.

Excerpt

Before Chase could put his phone in his pocket, the doorbell rang. He sighed. He opened the door without looking through the peephole. He froze, words sticking in his throat.

Jody stood there.

He hadn’t seen her in over a year and his heart stopped just from looking into her gorgeous eyes. In a green dress and heels she looked more beautiful than ever, grown-up, sophisticated, except there were tiny worry lines around her eyes that hadn’t been there before.

She had a box in her hands and shoved it toward him. “These are some of the things you gave me and I don’t want them in my house anymore.”

He refused to take it so she set the box on the floor by his feet. Her eyes were cold and hesitant as she waited for him to pick it up.

“How did you know I was home?” he asked, ignoring the box.

“I have to go. Just wanted you to have those things back because I know they mean something to you.”

“That’s why I gave them to you. They’re yours.”

She turned to leave as if she didn’t want to get into an argument. He couldn’t let her go. Breathing the same air as Jody was intoxicating and he wanted to keep her here as long as possible, even if they were arguing. It had always been that way with him. He could be in the dumps about a game or something but the moment he heard her voice, it lifted his spirits.

“What are you doing home anyway? Don’t you have spring training or something or another?”

“I just wanted to come home.”

Forged in Fire
(Colton 911 #9)
By Linda Warren”
Contemporary, Romance, Suspense
Paperback & ebook, 288 Pages
September 28, 2021 by Harlequin Romantic Suspense

A simple assignment… turns into life and death…

Is Lila Colton a thief?

Insurance investigator Carter Finch vows to uncover the truth when he visits her gallery. But his temporary mission goes awry when Lila turns out to be incredibly beautiful… and just a bit lethal. A fire engulfs the building, which puts them both in harm’s way. Is Lila his ally or pushing him into a deadly trap?

(Affiliate links included.)

Excerpt

“We have to get out of here,” Carter shouted. “Where’s the exit?”

Lila pointed to the left. Smoke covered the back entrance and they couldn’t see. The fire alarm screeched in their ears. Carter grabbed her jacket and blouse and his jacket and then took her hand and ran into the hallway. “Maybe we can get out the front door.”

Flames clawed at the front entrance like an angry monster, roaring and destroying what it touched. Carter, still holding her hand, rushed into her office. He looked around. “No windows.”

There was one long window at the top but it wasn’t a potential exit. The gallery was fully secured. Without a key, there was no way to get in or out.

“Wrap the blouse around your face to protect it and put your jacket on to protect your skin,” Carter said as he wrapped his jacket around his head and covered his mouth. “Try not to breathe too much of the smoke. I called 911 so someone should be here quickly. Just stay calm.”

“Yeah, right.” Her hands shook and she tried to do as he’d asked, but that was impossible. The fire was all around them and no help was in sight.

Paperback & ebook, 143 Pages

Patient Twenty-Nine, or Jane, is within reach of her heart’s desire: a home outside of Soothing Hills Asylum, where she has been raised.

Her sister Jules wants to take her in, and a man, Mason, is deeply in love with her and wants to care for her. But before Jane can leave, she must be examined by the Board of Lunacy. Jane is still hearing voices and songs from the cornfield outside the asylum, voices and songs that tell her what she must do, and that no one else can hear. So the Board may not allow her to leave.

But the asylum is becoming more and more dangerous. Its lead alienist, Dr. Frost, has disappeared, there have been frightening sightings of a woman in white, running through the corn at night, and perhaps worst of all: lobotomized women from the asylum are turning up pregnant.

Jane is desperate to get away and go to her new home. Mason and Jules only want to rescue Jane from the asylum.

But there is a complication: for Jane, the voice in the corn calls. And she must obey.

Excerpt from Book

Gentile arrives at the chair, his wizened hand lightly touching the halo.

The hair on the back of my neck rises. I understand the need for many of the asylum’s treatments—but this? I cannot come to terms with this idea, nor the outcomes I have thus far borne witness to. Electricity, fed through the chair’s halo, till life is extinguished.

“And how is Old Sparky today?” He speaks to the machine, patting it almost lovingly.

I shudder and bite my lip.

All words die in my throat.

As a boy, I watched our farm animals perish in a horrible barn fire. From that day, the sickeningly sweet smell of charred flesh is seemingly ever-embedded in my nostrils and mind.

Merely staring at “Old Sparky” not only revives this phantom smell but sends an instantaneous rise of bile up my esophagus.

“You do not approve,” Gentile says. It is not a question.

“No. This is one area of practice where we diverge. I… do not believe we should have the power to… snuff life. Not in this fashion.”

Gentile nods. “I am only in agreement in extreme circumstances. The chair was Frost’s, you know this.”

“Yes. But I was under the assumption we were here to discuss ablation. Not this… contraption.”

“Indeed. Walk with me, Jonathon.” He slips a periodical into my hands, the London Medical and Surgical Journal, where I assume I will read of his justifications for “Old Sparky.” Physicks are deluded in the sense that if words appear in a coherent, bound, and published fashion, they must be true and should be replicated.

I myself am a believer in problem-solving and experience.

I follow, just now noticing a huddled group of white coats, new alienists. Their faces are so fresh, they resemble excited schoolboys
rather than newly graduated interns from the College of Physicians and Surgeons.

“No. I sawr him. I’s tellin’ you, I sawr him!” a patient wails.

The young doctor dodges—but is not quick enough.

The young woman clutches and attaches to Dr. Pembleton’s lab coat, shaking him hard enough to send his horn-rimmed spectacles sliding to the end of his pointy nose.

Though her waist is buckled to the chair, the girl halves her body like a contortionist as Pembleton struggles backward, giving a valiant effort to disentangle himself.

I step forward, and all six young coats straighten in attention, parting like the sea for Moses to grant me passage.

I stand before her, bobbing and weaving with her darting gaze. “What is it, Wilhelmina? Whom have you seen?”

Her befuddled expression clears as her eyes fixate on me. She releases Pembleton, and he immediately retreats into the protective huddle of alienists as they close ranks. They circle him like a horde protecting an injured comrade.

“Oh, Dr. Grayjoy.” She grasps my hand, and I squeeze it in return. “I sawr him. IdidIdidIdid.”

I kneel before her. “Who? Who have you seen?”

Her face drains of remaining color, her eyes flicking left and right like an animal trapped.

She leans in, our heads nearly touching—I smell ripe urine and the rot of her teeth.

“Dr. Cloud. He has returned.”

Hardcover, Paperback & ebook, 300 Pages
February 4, 2019 by Burns and Lea Books

Life for Patient 29 is full of medicated day dreams of a life outside the walls of Soothing Hills Asylum. But fantasies are not all that consume her. A monster roams the halls of the sanitarium she reluctantly calls home and three girls have been found dead. The dead girls share one common thread . . . each was 29’s cell mate. As the investigation gets under way, she retreats into her mind, listening to the voices that call to her. She is endowed with the cursed gift of perception. Through it, she hears messages carried upon the notes of music, discerns words hidden among the strokes of paintings, and minds pleadings for help from the corn field outside.

Could the key to the murders lie within 29’s broken mind? Mason, an orderly, does not see 29 as a lunatic and as his belief in her grows so does her self-confidence. The possibility of one day leaving the asylum seems less and less like a fantasy. But the monster has other plans for her. Leaving will not be so easy, at least not while she is alive.

Excerpt

SHE WAS WEARING the necklace.

Seth felt relief and affection mix in this odd way inside of him, like a chemical reaction bubbling over and making him want to laugh. But he didn’t. He’d never want Victoria to think he was laughing at her. Because he wasn’t. It was pure relief. And joy, because he couldn’t help but fixate briefly on the looking forward to things she’d listed. Like their first pizza, first date, first kiss…

Nodding slowly, he tried to process all this information. Good news, mostly. If he hadn’t talked to Henry, he might never have ended up here tonight. He owed Henry huge.

But first, he and Vic needed to clarify a few things. “That is very thoughtful of you,” he said carefully.

“I’m glad you understand.” She gave him a weak smile. “I have a lot of baggage, and that’s not fair to you to have to pack it around with me. It’s better this way. You need to focus on putting on the best performance you can.”

“Hmm. So, if you were to talk to me about all of this, would that somehow take away from you turning in your best performance?”

“No, of course not. The opposite, I think. At least, that’s how I felt…before. In fact, I couldn’t wait for you to get here.”

“Before what?” he asked, liking that last part an awful lot.

“Before I talked to my ex. I was already struggling with feeling overwhelmed and insecure about the show. And then he tells me this thing and, boom, it was like being slingshotted backward to our past. There’s a lot there, Seth. Things I can’t talk about. And now he wants to use Scarlett to help him get what he wants, just like he used me, like he uses everyone. And I can’t be there for Scarlett right now. The timing is so terrible that I would accuse him of doing it on purpose to sabotage me if I thought he was that clever.”

“I see. Well, I still think I should get to decide whether listening to my girlfriend’s problems, supporting her, maybe offering to help or at least provide some comfort, would affect me and my performance.”

“Girlfriend?” she repeated, her expression softening, her body visibly relaxing.

He shrugged. “You put the necklace back on. That suggests to me that you still have feelings for me, right?”

Tears were shining in her eyes. “Seth, I have all the feelings. In fact, I might have too many feelings. The reason I took it off was because I wanted to follow the rules we established and keep everything separate. But I don’t think I can do that, which is why I told you that we should just focus on our Romeo Reels time. When this is over, maybe we can… Try again.”

“Try again? Is that what you want? Or is that what you think is best for me?”

“Best for you,” she answered immediately. “Because, Seth, look at me, I am a hot mess. That’s not an easy thing for me to admit. I pride myself on always being prepared. Composed. But today was like a perfect storm of everything going wrong, and I… It’s been a struggle, a struggle that I don’t want to drag you into.”

“If that’s all that’s going on, then no.”

“No?”

“I don’t like this plan. I should get a say in this, too. And I want to try still. Not again. I want to be with you whenever I can. I don’t care if it’s five minutes in the evenings, or seventeen seconds in the morning, or touching your hand under the table, or passing you in the hall where I can just look my fill, or texting and calling if that’s truly all we have time for. But I want to know that you’re mine. Because I want to be yours, Victoria. Whatever that means right now. When I said that to you about keeping the time separate, I didn’t know I was going to fall for you as hard as I have. Or that our schedule would be quite so packed.”

“Oh.”

“We can carve out space for some of the things you were looking forward to. We just need to plan, yet also be spontaneous. Take advantage of opportunities that arise.”

She nodded, looking relieved and agreeable and so beautiful that he could not wait any longer to touch her.

“Like our first kiss, for example. Maybe now would be the perfect moment to cross that off your list.”

Altered Helix (Altered Helix #1) By Stephanie Hansen Young Adult Fantasy Novella Paperback, Audiobook & ebook, 96 Pages May 19, 2020 by Hypothesis Books

I didn’t want to take the traditional path. First, I wasn’t ready for college. Second, I was going to live with my best friend, Tiff, and work at the Haunted House. Third, did I mention the hot guy Josh that works there too?

The most exciting thing about Austria’s new job, at a local haunted house, was the fact that the toughest looking people screamed the loudest. But when she meets the boy without a home, Josh, Austria’s life takes intriguing and eventful turns. Up until now, Josh has managed to hang with his Street crowd, but they’re in danger, and so is Austria, the girl Josh recently fell for. The group finds themselves joining forces with previously considered enemies who also now find themselves in danger.

Deeply compassionate and full of twists, Altered Helix captures the struggle of polarized people that must work together for the greater good.

EXCERPT FROM BOOK

I feel bad that Patrice has to work with Matt and Ed now. At least she’ll have Ethan with her. Now I see Ceresa is going to join her too. Good. Tiff’s heading back to Luke and Josh. Before I turn to do the same, I take one last look at Matt and Ed. They’re popping the knuckles on their hands, then they both turn and look directly at me at the same time. Why are they only looking at me? Is it because I’m the new kid? A cold sweat dampens the back of my neck as I turn to walk away.

That’s when it happens. Shadows begin to swarm around me. It’s like they’re circling vultures, and I’m the carcass. The energy makes me as dizzy as if I were dehydrated on a desert. And everything goes black for a second. When it’s light again, I’m hovering above everybody. At first, I think I’ve died and am having an out-of-body experience, but then I hear them. Bill’s over my body on one side checking my pulse, and says that I’ve fainted, embarrassing. Josh and Tiff are on the other side of me and look concerned. Then I hear a voice I would recognize anywhere. When I turn to my right, my voice recognition is confirmed. My father is there. He looks hazy, as if looking at a mirage. He reaches out his hand. I reach out mine. The warmth I feel when I hold his ghostly hand is like a favorite blanket I had as a child. My father looks me in the eyes.

“Be careful, Austria.”

Afraid of being caught by trackers from another world, a young mother abandons her baby boy in a tomato box inside the screened porch of a children’s home. The staff at the orphanage name him Hamelin Stoop, but he grows up longing to learn his real name, find his parents, and thus discover his true identity.
Life is not easy for Hamelin. He belongs to everyone, though in some ways to no one fully. And the people he is closest to leave him one by one. A letter from an older friend advises Hamelin to “keep waiting and keep hoping.” Bitter experiences force Hamelin to wait, but he has to learn how to hope.

Hamelin finally makes it across the footbridge only to learn that his quest to find his parents and learn his true identity will not be quickly done or easy to fulfill. The Great Eagle leads him through the dangerous Waters of Death and Life and into the Land of Gloaming, where Hamelin is thrown into the midst of a war already being waged between the evil Chimera and the mysterious Ancient One. He must help two new friends find a kidnapped princess and recover a stolen jewel, tasks for which they have special gifts that must not be misused: a scarf of sight, shoes of speed, and a sword of death. But these quests are only part of the larger story, a story including Chimera’s plan to use Hamelin—a child of two realms—to seize the kingdoms on both sides of the Atrium of the Worlds.

Excerpt from Hamelin Stoop: The Ring of Truth, Chapter 7

The snake wasn’t still either. Its head, initially facing mostly toward Mr. Kaley and Bryan, stretched up and shook side to side, clearly taking in Layla as well. Then about two feet below the head, its upper body somehow divided into several neck-like cords, and from behind its big head, six smaller heads spread out like a fan, each of them with a two-foot neck that could extend its head in different directions.

Bryan shook his head in disbelief as he saw the new heads emerge, but he continued to move slowly into a crouch, his right foot almost imperceptibly shifting back a little.

“No!” said a strong female voice suddenly and with authority. Hamelin looked straight at Layla, who had also taken another step toward the snake! “No!” she said again, louder than the first time, her eyes fixed on the large central head. The snake then twisted its upper body, and all seven heads focused fully on her.

What is she doing? Hamelin thought to himself. He wasn’t sure whether it was the glare of the sun or something he had just never seen before in her, but her skin, always fair, took on a faint glow. Hamelin glanced back to his left, and the sun was almost midway in the sky. He looked back at Layla. Her lips moved faintly.

Is she talking to the snake?

The low hiss from the snake grew, but Layla in her head heard more. She understood the creature’s words: Are you speaking to me?

Her mind answered sharply: Leave my friends alone.

You dare to tell me no? I have heard of you. The stories of your grandmother and your impudent commands have been passed down. Your family—you’ll never see them again.

Layla laughed inwardly. Your prediction is not only wrong but confused! I’ve never known a grandmother, and my parents are already gone, killed by evil men. And I won’t let you hurt my brother and friends.

The snake’s eyes narrowed, and the edges of its mouth widened slightly, its oval face hinting at a sneer.

Layla raised her right arm to about chest high, her elbow slightly bent and the palm of her hand facing outward toward the snake.

When the children’s home forgets his eighth birthday, he sneaks away at night. He soon discovers that he isn’t just running away — he is being summoned by the Ancient One. Guided by the Great Eagle through a mysterious cave, Hamelin must pass a dangerous test of courage before he can find his parents.
Hamelin’s failures, fears, and hopes become part of a larger story, a story of a great struggle between worlds and kingdoms where the old myths of magic, evil contracts, and enslaved children turn out to be real.

Guest Post: The Storybook World of Hamelin Stoop

A strange portal connects the two worlds of the Hamelin Stoop series. On one side, the portal touches the world at the mouth of a cave outside of Middleton, Texas. The cave is one of many in West Texas, surrounded by small trees and shrubs, at the top of a small hill. Just a few miles away, 8-year-old Hamelin Stoop lives at Upton County Children’s Home, where he was abandoned by his parents as an infant in 1951. The children’s home is tended to by house parents, a cook, and an old farmer named Mr. Moore. Hamelin attends an elementary school in Middleton. He likes some of his teachers, especially Mrs. Eastland, but other people at school, like Mr. Litchie and Patton McBoggerson, make the orphan’s life miserable. The winters blow cold, and the summers are hot with the occasional fast and hard storm. It is one such night, when the rain isn’t expected, when Hamelin decides to run away.

On the other side of the portal, an Atrium with beautiful flowers and light abundant awaits, but it also hides an enchanting darkness beneath healing waters. Beyond the Atrium, there is a medieval world waiting. This world has many kingdoms, including Parthogen, which has been overthrown by an evil commander; Osmethan, where waters of unending life entice the weak-minded; and Periluna, an underground kingdom dependent on a precious jewel for light. These two worlds are connected, and a great evil is attempting to grasp for more power. Nevertheless, the servants of the Ancient One on both sides of the portal have hope.

Guest Post: The Bible, the Pied Piper, and Hamelin Stoop

Do you remember the legend of The Pied Piper? When I was young, I was attracted to many stories of myth and magic, but it was this story that I longed to see finished. It is the story of the lost children of Hameln town. The children were seduced into following the alluring music of a cunning piper (their parents failed to live up to the contract made with the Pied Piper, and he stole the children to exact their unpaid debt and avenge his wounded dignity), who led them into a magic mountain, never to be seen again. Only a few witnesses were left to go back so that the parents would know what they had done, that it was their fault the children were taken.

My childhood mind was troubled. What happened to the children who were taken away? Could they ever be rescued and come home? What about their parents and the pain they felt? Would it ever be relieved? Even today the town of Hameln has an old stained glass window commemorating the loss of the children, as well as historical documents and inscriptions that place the great loss on June 26, 1284, the day of Saints John and Paul. Will Hameln always endure the shame of its treachery? The answers are – nothing will ever be the same until the children are restored to their town and families. But how?

I lived with that painful non-ending until one day the story of the Bible and the legend of The Pied Piper connected in my imagination. The story of the Bible is also unfinished in the Old Testament, and though the beginning of the hoped for ending is picked up again in the New Testament and carried forward substantially through the story of Jesus, it remains still unfinished on the stage of history. I think the stories connected in my mind because both are unfinished, with exiles who have yet to be brought home.

Once I filled out a larger narrative for the world and backstory of The Pied Piper, the Hamelin Stoop series was born.

The sound of the door opening from the mechanic shop interrupted me and I glanced up to see Connor Hunt coming into the lobby.

He nodded at the phone in my hand. “Looking at anything good?”

“A physiology text book.”

“Sure. Good choice for some light reading on a snowy weekend afternoon.”

“I’m learning ways to cause the most pain with the least damage,” I replied in a sugary sweet voice.

He nodded slowly as though I’d just told him I was knitting a doily. “Ah. That would probably come in handy sometimes.”

“Indeed.” I put my phone back in my bag and zipped it closed. “Is my car ready?”

“Yep. Everything went well. Total is the nine hundred I quoted you.”

“Okay. What are your thoughts on payment seeing as you know I’m broke?”

“I have an idea if you’re open to discussing other options for payment.”

My gut clenched and my face warmed. Here we go. He’d pulled the wool over other people’s eyes, but things were about to get real. “Depends on what ‘other options for payment’ you might have in mind.”

His brows lowered. “What are you talking about?”

“I’m not going to pay off my debts by, like, kissing you and stuff.” My face burned, but I kept eye contact with him, knowing it was important to not back down.

“Liv Phelps, does your mother know what kind of thoughts go through that head of yours?” he asked with wide eyes that seemed oddly surprised for someone who’d I’d long suspected of having underhanded dealings.

The only sound in the lobby was that of my pounding heartbeats. I wasn’t sure what had just happened. I took a deep breath, playing the conversation back in my mind as I watched his expression turn stony. Oh. Maybe I’d jumped the gun here.

“So,” I cleared my throat and swallowed. “I may have jumped to conclusions.”

“Yep.”

I scrunched up my nose and fidgeted a bit. “Okay. I’m ready to talk about payment options.”

“I’m rethinking what I was going to offer,” he replied.

“Is that him?” Gabby slapped Tessa’s leg like an overexcited Chihuahua. “That has to be him. Tessa, is that him? Tell me it’s him.”

Tessa laughed. “I told you I don’t know what he looks like.”

“Just look,” Gabby begged.

There was no point arguing with Gabby when she got something in her head. Tessa lowered her arms, the balloon bouncing against her thigh as she peered into the dwindling crowd. Her model had to be one of the few pedestrians heading this way.

One couple.

Another couple with two pudge-cheeked kids and a scraggly furred dog.

Another couple.

Tessa couldn’t see any men walking alone. He didn’t mention traveling with anyone. “Are you sure you saw him? Which one did you think…”

Oh.

Soft brown hair; eyes, too far away to notice the color but striking enough to make her heart feel like it was thumping inside of her throat. He wore a tight-cut charcoal-grey suit — more formal than anything her previous models wore — that hinted at hard curves beneath.

He definitely had the body of a model, but not hers.

He was beautiful.

Too beautiful.

Her models were usually elderly, with sagging skin and greying hair; the contours of their bodies made for soft, delicate strokes on paper. This man would be all hard lines and bold strokes.

His gaze found hers.

Tessa’s breath caught in her throat.

After growing up on the South Coast’s sandy shores, she jumped on a plane and settled in the lush green wilderness of the Pacific Northwest. Her new backyard inspired a life long dream to put pen to paper, and Winslow Island was born.

When she’s not scribbling sweet stories full of witty characters and mischievous matchmakers, Chrissy is navigating life as an expat, explaining what fairy floss is and trying to remember that orange-flavored chocolate is not a food group.

Oregon, December 1869

Charlotte Pullard opened her eyes to the gray of dawn, blinking slowly. Gradually, a beamed ceiling came into focus… but it wasn’t her ceiling. Whose ceiling was it? She closed her eyes again, thinking.

She’d kissed her mother goodbye. Something about that felt sad, wrong somehow. Maybe she hadn’t wanted to leave. And her father… her father…

Gasp!

Charlotte’s eyes flew open and she sat up so quickly that her head began to spin. Sinking back down to the pillow, she touched her forehead softly, her breath coming in short bursts. Her father had sent her away, as easily as a load of freight aboard one of his many vessels. She’d placed one foot mindlessly over the other, turning her back on all she’d ever known. It was to be a short trip, no longer than two days until she’d reach Crescent City, California. Then the sky puckered sourly, darkening beyond the shade of rain to something far more formidable.

The storm.

The storm with waves as big as mountains, waves so steep that her stomach would flutter every time the ship slid down the sides of them. The water was icy cold, the thunder as loud as rocks grinding together. Or had that been the ship crashing into protruding basalt?

She shook her head at the nightmare, the terror and tumult of the darkness that seemed unreal, yet too vivid to be fantasy. Then she remembered Woody, that he’d dragged her below deck to her room and shouted at her to stay put. No sooner had the words spilled from the sailor’s mouth than she found herself in the water, so breathtakingly cold and angry that it consumed her every thought and feeling…

A tear ran down her temple.

It was horrible, all of it. Yet here she was, alive, in a quiet room somewhere on shore. No, not entirely quiet, for there were the waves, not villainous and uncaring as she remembered, but rhythmic and steady.

She placed her palms flat against the mattress and slowly, so slowly pressed herself upright. There. That wasn’t so bad. Breathe in, breathe out. The deep breaths made her throat and lungs burn.

What day was it? Where was she, exactly? Where was the rest of the crew? Loud questions filled her head, vying to be first to receive an answer, but she plucked them away.

One thing at a time.

The bedroom was small and bright in the early morning light, containing only the bed she sat upon, a three-drawer bureau, and a washstand, which snagged her attention. Fingers darting to her unadorned neck, Charlotte swung her bare feet to the floor and stood, snatching the golden locket from the washstand. She’d never taken it off, not since he’d given it to her on that chilly, cloudless night last spring. A small smile stretched her lips as she cradled the token in her palms, lost in the memory of his strong hand on her cheek, how he had almost kissed her; how happy she’d been gazing into his blue eyes as deep and stimulating as the ocean itself.

But she knew the tragic ending to that story. Maxwell Tucker had filled her heart and head with his affections, then abandoned her to heartache, confusion, loneliness. Worst of all, she knew wholeheartedly that she could never love another as she’d loved him. It was that small word that kept the golden locket in her pocket always.

Love.

For no matter the pain he had later put her through, he had given her the cherished necklace out of love. The locket – and the memories – were all she had left of those happy days, and each time she opened it, those joyous recollections tumbled out.

Standing tall, Charlotte stretched her hands high above her head, rolled her shoulders, then used her fingers to comb through her tangled copper tresses. Rips and stains covered her dress… and hadn’t she been wearing stockings? She groaned, knowing she must look awful.

Her rumbling stomach drew her out of self-inspection and through the little cottage. Good heavens, but it was a mess! The furniture, though in good condition, lay in heaps about the sitting room, and the kitchen looked like it hadn’t had a thorough cleaning in ages. Whoever it was who lived in this grimy little place must be dreadfully slovenly. Then she noticed the staircase at the back of the house and couldn’t keep herself from wandering towards it. Curious, she climbed one set of stairs to a low-ceilinged garret and gasped in pleasure, lacing her hands together. The single window let in soft, muted light, perfect for reading one of the books from the rows of shelves filling the narrowest wall.

Thrilled as she was to have found the library, she quickly forgot about the books, for the shelves continued around the entirety of the room and displayed the most wonderful collection of seashore knickknacks she’d ever seen! Sea shells in every shape and color, the largest as big as her head, the smallest as little as the fingernail on her pinky; white sand dollars and chunks of coral; bright green and blue sea glass, smoothed by the ocean. Oh, she could spend a week in this room examining each and every piece! It would only be fair to amend her earlier hasty assessment of the occupant, she decided. Whomever this charming cottage belonged to must be utterly fascinating.

Pursing her lips, Charlotte remembered herself and her situation and backed out of the room. She should be mindful of her host, not traipse around his or her personal space as though it were a public museum. And where was this person, anyway? Perhaps she’d find him or her at the top of these stairs. Up she climbed, bewildered by the number of steps.

Finally, she came upon another room with a closed door, but after peeking inside to find it dark and devoid of persons, she continued her ascent, fighting lightheadedness. Next came an open, round room with a padded chair and writing desk topped with an ink pot and book, and some sort of mechanical device in the very center opened to the room above. Suddenly, the random tower made sense. I’m in a lighthouse!

Rungs of a ladder rose to access the top of the tower, and on that ladder, two legs in soiled men’s trousers. Charlotte cleared her throat loudly.

The man stilled but did not come down.

“Excuse me, good sir,” Charlotte began, thinking maybe he was hard of hearing. The silence was getting a bit awkward. “I’d like to thank you for bringing me here after that awful storm. Do you know where the others…”

Her sentence trailed off as the man descended, as she began to recognize his trim waist and broad shoulders. He stood at the bottom of the ladder, hesitating to turn around. He didn’t need to – she knew exactly who he was.

Fiona groaned. “Now I have to go back to dating.”

That moment, Simon recognized later, was his undoing. Specifically, that sound, the heart-wrenching sound of Fiona’s sadness, weariness and despair. It dug right into him and precipitated his final descent into foolishness. That, and the idea of watching her continue to waste time on these mismatched “matches” via her bogus family-influenced profile. What if she grew so tired of the process that she gave up and settled on someone? He couldn’t handle it if she ended up with some guy even weirder than Drew or as domineering as Gary. If she was going to go through with this husband search, she deserved one worthy of her. He needed to make sure of that.

“No, Fiona, you don’t.”

“Unfortunately, I do,” she countered.

“You don’t even like this internet dating stuff.”

Fiona gazed quickly and impatiently skyward before focusing back on him. “That’s not exactly news, Simon. I’ve already told you I don’t. On paper, however, it should work.” She executed a theatrical air punch and forced a smile, and added, “It will work. Trying to stay optimistic here, but it’s getting difficult. I’m beginning to think I’m the problem.”

“You are most definitely not the problem.”

“Yeah? Well, so far… Never mind, I hate being negative. Ugh. Did you hear that? I just did it again. I’m usually not a negative person, but since I’ve moved to Montana things have not worked out like I thought they would and…” Her eyes widened as if surprised by her comment. “You know what? You don’t need to hear this. I’ll figure it out. I always do.”

“Maybe I can help.”

“That is highly unlikely.”

“Neg-a-tive,” he crooned in a singsong voice. “We’re not doing negative anymore, remember?”

“Right.” Twitching and extra cute, her mouth barely resisted a smile.

“I have a dating proposition for you.”

“Very funny,” she returned drily.

“I’m not talking about me,” he said. Just gathering the words felt painful, but he forged on, “Shut down your dating profile, and I’ll find you a guy.”

Her eyebrows darted up as her mouth opened and then snapped shut, leaving an expression that reflected the pure bizarreness of the suggestion. “You are going to find me a guy?”

“I know a lot of people around here.” Ned and Val knew even more. He would enlist their advice, he decided, growing more encouraged by his suggestion. “Let me be your matchmaker.”

“Why would you do that?”

“Because I care about you. I can’t stand to see you on these dates, disappointed over and over again.” If that gave away more of his feelings than was wise, he didn’t care.

When she didn’t answer, he posed it another way. “How is my setting you up with a guy I think you’ll like, and who I think is worthy of you, any different than your family helping you fill out your profile to attract a certain type of guy?”

“Are you saying that you think you can do a better job of finding me a potential husband than my own family?”

“Well, I know you and I know the guys. So…” He shrugged one shoulder dramatically. “What do you have to lose? I’ll be leaving in a few weeks anyway. If it doesn’t work, you reactivate your profile and go back to doing it your way.”

Chase settled his arm around her shoulders and pulled her against his side in a brotherly hug. “You know we love to have you anytime you can visit.”

“I do know that and am grateful for the standing welcome.” Ashley smiled up at her cousin while a tiny tornado swept into the kitchen.

Corkscrew curls the color of straw bounced in every direction as the little girl launched herself at Wyatt. He swung her into his arms and kissed her rosy cheek. The little one looked like a miniature replica of Sarah.

“Hi!” the child greeted with a broad smile that showed off a missing space in her front teeth.

“Hi, Livy.” Jessie smiled at the little girl. “Are you keeping your Uncle Wyatt busy while he’s here?”

“Yep! We watched a movie last night about the bear ’cessities. It was awesome! But Uncle Wyatt said he’s missing some of the ’cessities. I told him he needs a wife and babies.” Livy wiggled against Wyatt, so he set her on her feet.

She rushed over to Ashley and took her hand in hers. “Hi! I’m Livy. Wyatt’s my uncle, and that’s my mama, Sarah. My daddy is washing up, then we can eat. I’m starving to death! You’re pretty and smell nice, too.”

The little imp turned toward Wyatt. “Did you smell her, Uncle Wyatt? She smells good. Maybe she’d be your wife, and you could have babies, Uncle Wyatt.”

Grand Finale for Seven Ways to Kill a King By Melissa Wright

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

We hope you enjoyed the tour! If you missed any of the stops you’ll find snippets, as well as the link to each full post, below:

Launch – Note from the Author

Princess Myrina is done hiding. Determined to remove each of the seven kings who stole her mother’s throne, she has every intention of setting things to right, king by murderous king. Her final mark waits in the castle of Stormskeep where her captive sister–the rightful queen and heir to the kingdom–is held by the worst of the kings. . .

Hallie Reads – Excerpt

“What are you playing at, Miri? You know we’ll never get past the guards. We can’t just waltz into the nearest castle and—” He made a vague gesture Miri supposed meant kill a king then shrugged a shoulder. “We should return to Smithsport. You should get on that ship and sail to somewhere safe.”

Any grace he’d earned the night before was forgotten. Miri leaned close. “My sister is captive to those murderous kings. If you think, for one moment, I prize my safety over hers—” Her words cut off at his look, because Miri knew all too well the sacrifice Cass was willing to make. He’d only wanted to save her and make her see that the path she was taking would be the death of them all. “I release you from your duty,” she said.

DEEKAY | Daily Dose of Reading – Review

“I had so much fun reading this book and following the journey of Miri and Cass in this wonderfully-written fantasy story. As a standalone fantasy book, it was done excellently and no wonder it wasn’t a series or part of a series. The way the author wrote this amazing story proved that this book is good without having to have any continuation. I highly recommend this to those who love reading fantasy books with strong protagonists, plenty of good actions, and memorable story that will always stay with you.”

Locks, Hooks and Books – Review

Seven Ways to Kill a King is the first book I have read by Melissa Wright. It will not be the last. I found the writing and plot to be unique and refreshing. I really enjoyed Cass and Miri’s story. I admired the bravery and courage of Miri. The whole book was non stop action and adventure.”

Andi’s Young Adult Books – Excerpt

Cass leaned down to blow on the flame, and when the light flared, it caught his expression. Miri had thought him angry, and certainly, he was, but something else simmered beneath his displeasure. Terric was a queensguard and had been his friend. Miri hadn’t just risked cost to herself. If Terric didn’t make it, it would cost them both.

Wishful Endings – Review

“I seriously loved reading this! I loved that it was a standalone, which is still rare these days (especially in fantasy). Great characters, an intriguing plot with all the feels, plenty of danger and action, and a sweet romance made for an excellent read. I’m excited to see what comes next from this author!”

Getting Your Read On – Review

“This was definitely a plot driven book. . . . The best bits of the book for me were the sneaking, assassin attempts and the fighting. They author did a great job of creating tension with those. I was definitely interested in how the events would play out and the last third of the book was great as far as a climax of events.”

Christy’s Cozy Corners – Excerpt

“Chickens. Maybe a doe.” He met her stare. “It’s not the same.”

“It’s not different.” It was. Killing to eat was not killing to kill. Wild game was no man. It was only a meal.

Cass was trying to scare her because of what she’d done and because they were getting closer to Pirn and the nearness of executing her plan. But there was no turning back. She had no other choice.

Rockin’ Book Reviews – Review

“This is a great action filled story. Miri and Cass are on the move throughout the entire story. I liked all the characters who were backup help to them. I liked the ending because it wasn’t at all how I was predicting it to be. . . . I highly recommend this book to others who like a good adventure.”

Bookishlifetime – Review

“I highly enjoyed this book! It was well-written, and highly entertaining. The story is awesome and it has an interesting plot! I also very much enjoyed the characters.”

Rincón de Joss – Review

“After getting to the end, I was so satisfied with the story and with the ending, something I liked a lot on this book was the detailed descriptions on it, you could actually imagine every place and every situation, so that made you get very immerse in the story from very early on.

It was an awesome fantasy with lots of drama and a little romance along the way.”

Splashes of Joy – Excerpt

Miri had never killed a man. Of course, she’d imagined it. Countless times, she’d envisioned holding each of those kings by the scruff of his neck, tugging his head back, and holding a blade at his throat as she whispered, “The Lion Queen sends her regards.”

She deserved to be scared. But she would not be turned away.

Caffeine Addled Ramblings – Excerpt

“They’ll do it at the festival,” Miri whispered to the air above her bed. “They’ll drag her into the square dressed in Lion silks. They’ll draw her braid behind her shoulder and wrap her wrists in leather and chains.”

She felt the stillness of Cass and that he did not seem to even draw breath. She wished she’d never spoken, but she couldn’t seem to stop. The kings were only holding Lettie hostage to use as leverage against the sorcerers who were tied to queen’s blood. Once she rose into her full power as heir, Lettie would have to be removed from their game.

Library Lady’s Kid Lit – Review

“There is much to like in Melissa Wright’s latest book Seven Ways to Kill a King. You have mythical lands, evil kings, and a princess who wants to make it all right again. There is also fighting, mystery, and romance. Melissa Wright has crafted a well-written fantasy that will draw in many readers. It is action-packed and will keep readers reading.”

Teatime and Books – Excerpt

“In a few days, they would pass near Stormhold, named for the first queen of the realm. Miri couldn’t recall the first time she’d seen the gate, but she’d been in awe without exception since. A massive structure stretched so high that one could barely make out the guards at the top, and carved into the stone of the archway was a relief of the Storm Queen herself.”

The Reading Corner for All – Review

“The author had a great capability to convey the intricacies of Miri’s plot and how she would execute them along with Cass, a bloodsworn soldier whose devotion to Miri suggests a more amorous bond. I loved the premise of the story and the foundation that centered on a young woman who took command of her own story, sought justice for the death of her mother, and strove to reclaim her birthright.”

A Note from the Liz Flaherty and an Excerpt

It has been a staycation of sorts, in this summer of sheltering in place and worrying everywhere and regretting—bitterly sometimes—the inability to go on a real vacation. Since the 14 of us are writers, how else would we spend a staycation than writing stories? And what better place to write about than Last Chance Beach: Summer’s End.

I’m here to say we had a lot of fun, these women who like and respect each other and appreciate everyone’s talents and…er…shortcomings. We hope you have fun, too, reading our stories. There’s a free add-on, too, called Cocktails on Last Chance Beach, that we had even more fun with. It’s recipes, you see, which must be tested. Sometimes more than once.

My story from Last Chance Beach is Something New, the story of Hass Applegate and Zeke Merriweather, who have their lives together all planned out. Until they’re not sure that what they’ve planned is what they want, or that being best friends is enough to build a marriage from, or that something new is necessarily the right something.

An excerpt from Something New:

Their lives are all planned out—until they’re not.
***

When she came back outside, he got up, and they took their drinks and went down to walk along the splashing shallows as if by design, although neither of them had mentioned it. She’d never answered his question, and he didn’t reach for her hand as would usually have done. He felt less certain of her and their relationship than he had since the first time she ground the gears in the truck.

“Do you remember—” he began.

“Did you ever—” she started.

They stopped, standing still with the water slapping their feet and ankles and staring at each other in the encroaching darkness.

“You’re the best friend I’ve ever had,” she said softly, raising her hands to his cheeks.

“Me, too,” he said, reaching up and taking her hands in his. Sometimes he forgot how strong she was, but her hands always reminded him. “There’s a ‘but’ there, though, isn’t there?”

She nodded. “I can’t explain it, Z.”

Zeke didn’t know how to answer, how to say he had his own “but” when it came to their relationship. Because he didn’t know how to explain it, either. There was one thing, however, that he knew. “Maybe,” he said, “we should think about putting off the wedding.”

Happy 50th Book Release to Regina Scott with THE ARTIST’S HEALER! #Regina50

On Tour with Prism Book Tours
Regina Scott On Her 50th Release
When my first book, The Unflappable Miss Fairchild, was published, I never dreamed I’d have the chance to publish 49 more books. It was enough to know a publisher had taken a chance on me, that the story in my head and my heart would reach readers. I have loved the Regency period for years, so it’s not surprising that many more stories set in that time period would urge me to tell them, culminating in the publication of The Artist’s Healer, the third book in my Grace-by-the-Sea series. Over the years, I’ve been blessed to be able to delve into other eras and locations as well: pioneer Seattle, turn-of-the-century Texas, the old West. Many, many thanks to all my readers for allowing me to be a part of their lives. 50 books! Who knew? Here’s to many more adventures ahead!
—Regina

The Artist’s Healer
(Grace-by-the-Sea #3)
By Regina Scott

Paperback & ebook, 175 Pages
June 29, 2020

Grace-by-the-Sea: Where romance and adventure come home.

Spunky artist and entrepreneur Abigail Archer is determined to see her friend, Jesslyn Denby, restored as director of the spa at Grace-by-the-Sea, even if that means ousting the news physician who took her place. A shame she was recently injured and requires him to dance attendance on her. But if he thinks she’ll meekly accept his orders, he’d better think again!

Doctor Linus Bennett came to the little coastal village with his young son to escape a troubled past. He’s not about to lose his post to some crusader, but the pretty painter awakens feelings he’d thought long buried. When it appears the French are about to invade, Abigail and Linus must work together to save the village. In doing so, the doctor may just find that falling in love with the outspoken Abigail is the best prescription to heal his wounded heart.

This sweet, clean Regency is the sequel to The Heiress’s Convenient Husband.

About the Author

Regina Scott started writing novels in the third grade. Thankfully for literature as we know it, she didn’t sell her first novel until she learned a bit more about writing. Since her first book was published, her stories have traveled the globe, with translations in many languages, including Dutch, German, Italian, and Portuguese. The Artist’s Healer marks her fiftieth published work of warm, witty romance. She loves everything about England, so it was only a matter of time before she started her own village. Where more perfect than the gorgeous Dorset Coast? She can imagine herself sailing along the chalk cliffs, racing her horse across the Downs, dancing at the assembly, and even drinking the spa waters. She drank the waters in Bath, after all! Regina Scott and her husband of 30 years reside in the Puget Sound area of Washington State on the way to Mt. Rainier. She has dressed as a Regency dandy, learned to fence, driven four-in-hand, and sailed on a tall ship, all in the name of research, of course. Learn more about her at www.reginascott.com.
