MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I fell in love with this book as soon as I saw the cover! As I read The Red Fence I loved it even more. This is a wonderful book for your little ones. They will love the sweet story as well as the lovely creations crafted by Illustrator Jenn Polk. The vivid colors and the adorable characters bring this story to life before your very eyes. This book is beautiful and adorable inside and out. And I love the Dr Seuss feel when reading this book, I think I read it four times.

The main thing I love about this story is the valuable lessons it teaches children. Children seem to listen more when reading books and in The Red Fence by Ed Damiano will show kids of all ages how to fit into this world. How to be accepted but everyone, and that everyone is different, and it is ok to be different. I would love seeing this book in public libraries, school libraries as well as daycare. It would be awesome in Doctor and Dentist offices or anywhere else kids may be. I highly encourage you to check this book out. This cute book is a Five Stars for me.

AND NOW JOIN ME IN READING THIS INTERESTING INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR ED DAMIANO

  1. How do you come up with your story topics?

I have a vivid imagination and I use my personal experiences or those of family and friends to come up with my stories.

  1. There are many books out there about diversity, What makes yours different?

I don’t know about the other books about diversity because I don’t research them or compare. My book comes from experiences and using those experiences to share a lesson that can be applied to use in daily life.

  1. What advice would you give budding writers?

My advice to new writers: to paraphrase Field of Dreams, “If it’s in you, it will happen”

  1. Do you ever get writer’s block? What helps you overcome it?

Yes. I get writer’s block. That’s why although they are short stories, they take a long time to write. I worked on The Red Fence for a year. The initial thought, story, and outline is there, then you read and correct, read and change, until you feel comfortable. And you never really do. What helps me overcome it? Relaxing and watching old black and white movies!

  1. Last great book I read.

Norman Vincent Peals – The Power of Positive Thinking

Tour and Giveaway for The Ice Swan by J’Nell Ciesielski

The Ice Swan

About the Book

Book:  The Ice Swan

Author: J’Nell Ciesielski

Genre: Historical Romance

Release date: July 6, 2021

IS cover

Amid the violent last days of the glittering Russian court, a Russian princess on the run finds her heart where she least expects it.

1917, Petrograd. Fleeing the murderous flames of the Russian Revolution, princess Svetlana Dalsky hopes to find safety in Paris with her mother and sister. But the city is buckling under the weight of the Great War, and the Bolsheviks will not rest until they have erased every Russian aristocrat from memory.

Born the second son of a duke, the only title Wynn MacCallan cares for is that of surgeon. Putting his talents with a scalpel to good use in the hospitals in Paris, Wynn pushes the boundaries of medical science to give his patients the best care possible. While treating Svetlana for a minor injury, he is pulled into a world of decaying imperial glitter and underground Russian clubs where drink, culture, and questionable dealings collide on bubbles of vodka.

Out of money and options, Svetlana is forced into a marriage of convenience with Wynn, who will protect her and pay off her debts. It’s the right thing for a good man to do, but Wynn can’t help hoping the marriage will turn into one of true affection. As the Bolsheviks chase them to different corners of the earth, Wynn and Svetlana begin to see they will never be able to outrun the love they have for one another.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

First of all I love the cover of The Ice Swan and its the main reason I wanted to read this book, though I have read others by this author and they were amazing. And I found The Ice Swan to be another amazing read by author J’Nell Ciesielsk. The story is written during World War I, and for me, it started out very slow. But never fear, after a while it spikes and you will not want to put the book down.

The characters were so well crafted and their development throughout the story was phenomenal. The plot flows so well, I love Svetlana Dalsky and Wynn MacCallan’s story. It flows so well, from the time Svetlana leaves Russia on until the end. Historical Paris and Scotland was fun reading about, and Russia history was interesting as well. I’ve only read a few book with the setting in or around WWI so there is a lot of intriguing history for me here. So if you love historical fiction set in this era, I highly recommend this book to you. There are lots of twists and turns, much tension, but the author does a fantastic job of weaving everything together and coming up with a great ending

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

More from J’nell

When we think of the Great War we often only think about events happening right on the battlefield of France, Belgium, and Germany. It was a time of great upheaval for so many people and countries, none more so than Russia. It was during the Great War that the Bolsheviks rose up against the monarchy, assassinated the tsar and his family, and plunged Russia into civil war. The country was in such chaos that they pulled out of the war to deal with their own revolution. The Russian Revolution was the result of centuries of oppression and imperialism that finally boiled over. As the Bolsheviks seized power, nobles and anyone associated or favorable to the monarchy were stripped of their privileges and homes, many killed, and still thousands of others fled in fear of their lives where they became the great wave of White emigres.

The stories of the ill-fated Anastasia and the evil Rasputin are legendary, but it wasn’t until recently when I watched a Russian miniseries called Road to Calvary that I became fascinated with the nobles and their struggle and from all that an idea sparked that would become my upcoming release, The Ice Swan. It’s about a Russian princess fleeing the Revolution to Paris in 1917 where she meets a handsome surgeon who is breaking new grounds in cardiology. We see the plight of the White emigres who have taken refuge in Paris and founded their own little Russia in the heart of the city, the exhausted City of Light after four years of war, the overflowing hospitals, and highly controversial advancements in surgery. Plus, a romance to prove that true love can overcome any difference and who doesn’t need a little more love these days?

Book Description:

Another Readers’ Favorite 5-STAR Suspense Romance. Begin the journey today.

Kate’s destiny has been determined for her.

Hidden out in the country for most her life, Kate Connelly suddenly wakes up, handcuffed to a hospital bed, in the psyche ward of The Academy. Her crime? Being “gifted.” And it’s Officer “Ranger” Nealson’s job to make her adhere to The Academy’s agenda for her. Even though he’s the one who drugged and dragged her in. Kate’s hate for Ranger, and his academy, is at an all-time high. Ranger has his work cut out for him . . . and Kate does too. She has to fight through the rigors of the Cadet-in-Training program, and quickly. If not, she’ll lose the one privilege she’s been given at The Academy—access to her precious little brother.

And until she graduates from the CIT program, Officer Nealson is banned from Missions. When General Weston finally offers a juicy recon to Ranger, he wants to jump at the chance to prove himself again. After all, catching bad guys is his thing. Almost all pros for doing it. One con—Cadet Connelly has to ride along.

The hardened officer finds he’s slowly been growing a soft spot for his mentee. But he’s determined not to end up like his father, and former Elite Cadet Pete Davenport—throwing away their career for a girl (not even a woman). And Kate has lingering feelings for Pete, who risked his life to warn her, and conflicting feelings for Ranger. She has to set both aside to focus on completing her first mission.

When the dust settles, old alliances are broken and new ones are formed. But one thing remains the same: Kate’s destiny has been determined for her by The Academy. Ready or not . . . she’s set for Missions. Will one of the former elite cadets step in to help change her fate, or will she be left to fight the Academy’s agenda alone?

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

After reading the first book in this series, I was anxious to read book two, and it did not disappoint. Again Author C. J. Daly writes an appealing story that will have you on the edge of your seat! I was glad to see even more development of the characters we met in book one, as well as the new characters we meet. There’s a lot of tension, especially after Kate finds herself in the psyche ward of The Academy. Her one mission is to gwt through the Cadet-in-Training program so she will be able to see her brother. I feel bad for Kate but at the same time I don’t. I would like seeing her develop a little more. And as far as team Ranger a d Team Pete, I think I’ll sat back and watch for a while. I did enjoy seeing things through Rangers eyes in this book. There is a lot if drama in this book, more so than book one I think, but all in all it is a great read. I can’t wait to see what book three has to offer. I highly recommend this book, and this series. And especially if you enjoy military reads. This book is Four Stars for me.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

NOW JOIN ME IN AN INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR C. J. DALY

  • In your writing career, what tasks do you not like to do?

Like most authors I know, I’m a natural introvert, so coming out from behind the computer has been a bit of a challenge. But to my surprise, I actually love creating the social media posts, and especially enjoy interacting with my fans. I’d say the nuts and bolts of running the business is my weakest link, and therefore, my least favorite part of my career. Thankfully, I have a small-but-mighty marketing team to help me.

  • What inspires your creativity?

This is such a tough question to answer, because it can be everything and nothing. I’ve always had a runaway imagination, which can be a good thing for a creative career like an author, or a bad thing, because I live in my head so much. And, of course, other great writers and books have inspired me. I’ve always been a voracious reader—everything from the classics to Harlequin romance novels have inspired me. Plus, my boys. I can’t forget my two favorite sparks of inspiration!

  • What do you create & why?

I create sweeping stories or sagas with a healthy dose of suspense, intrigue, and romance. And I create because it’s a compulsion; I simply can’t NOT write. It’s like living in a parallel universe, where it’s sometimes hard to know which reality I’m living in. I’ll try to put the story away to live a “normal” life for a while, but the characters come poking at me at night, robbing me of my sleep. It can be so frustrating, but it’s never boring!

  • What challenges have you faced when creating a story?

I guess the most challenging thing would be when I have an idea or outline in mind, and then the characters come along and do something else. I always go the way of the characters though. Their way is always better. Sometimes I feel like I’m just the portal through which they come. It’s their story; I’m just telling it.

  • How would you overcome obstacles?

I overcome obstacles by using good old-fashioned grit to will myself forward, then get back to work. And I couldn’t live without the support of my family and mom squad. I think every woman needs other women to lift them up when they’re down. To say, “Keep going, even when it gets tough.” Because the road to success is long and tough, I sometimes take a break to watch motivational videos. I like Bishop T.D. Jakes and serial-cusser Gary Vee. I also pray. A lot.

  • When did your creative spark being?

I think my creative spark began on the family ranch back in New Mexico. My seven siblings and I were outside working a lot, doing monotonous chores. It was sometimes lonely, and we didn’t have a lot of resources to draw from but our imaginations. You can’t imagine some of the crazy games we came up with, the scary stories we’d tell. It would definitely keep me up at night, so I would read, read, read! Which was such a bad thing, because we had to rise with the sun the next day, for another round of chores!

  • What is something you’d like to share with your past-self?

So many things: not to try cutting your own bangs, for one thing! But seriously, I’d like to go back and tell myself not to overthink things (except for aforementioned action, LOL!). I always obsess with the minutia of all I have to do, and the time and resources it will take to do it, and it paralyzes me. I’d advise my former self to just take the next step, for it is that series of next steps—no matter how small—that leads to success.

  • If you could change one thing, what would it be?

If I could change one thing it would be going for my dream career sooner. I’d always heard how hard it is to make a living as a writer. Apparently, you have better luck being struck by lightning. So I thought I had to make a living first, then go for it. But now I wished I would have tried sooner. I was just so afraid of being poor that I was too afraid to take the risk until my family was financially stable. Anytime you have a calling, like I did, I think you owe it to yourself to see it through. I still wonder where I would be now if I would have begun right out of college. But I can’t regret those humorous years teaching middle school, or stopping to have my amazing children—really priceless experiences that have helped shape me into who I am today. So now I amend my former regret: I wouldn’t change anything, because the path I’m on now . . . it’s the right one, at the right time. I’m sure of it!

  • What do you hope people can take away from your books?

I hope people take away an amazing story and characters that stick with them, like old friends. Sure, I want readers to be entertained, but I also want them to get swept up in another world, one that changes their worldview, maybe even the direction of their lives. I hope that doesn’t sound too dramatic, because that’s exactly what books did for me—changed the very course of my life. I was able to see other ways of life, outside the protective bubble I was born into. I could easily have stayed where I was and bore the next generation of farmer/ranchers, but I wanted something different for myself. Not that there is anything wrong with that life! I still yearn for the slower pace, the rural peacefulness, and friendly hometown folks. I’m still a small-town girl at heart.

  • Where are you headed?

I’ve been fortunate to hit Amazon Bestseller, but I hope I’m headed for the New York Times Best-Seller list next! Then Hollywood. Everyone says they see The Academy being made into a series, even going so far as to cast the three main characters: Pete, Kate, and Ranger. And I’ve been fortunate enough to already get a writing gig from a movie producer. But whatever the future holds, I just want to put the best product out there I can; something I’m proud of. I refuse to take shortcuts, and I won’t back down from the hard work. I’m definitely in it to win it . . . whatever “it” is. We’ll see what the future has in store for The Academy Saga, the little (big) book series that could.

Book Description:

Readers’ Favorite Suspense Romance

Kate Connelly should be careful what she wishes for.

Just seventeen, she already feels like she’s suffocating. Since her mother’s death, her father’s basically checked out, so she’s stuck raising her brothers by herself out in the New Mexico scrub. All Kate wants is a little distraction from the same-ole, same-ole that is her life.

When two mysterious guys show up at the diner where she works, she thinks her wish has come true, until they start giving her a hard time. Like her life isn’t hard enough. Something about them niggles her, but she brushes it off. She’s never going to see them again anyway . . . right?

Then they appear in an alley one night to either rescue or kidnap her (she’s still not sure which) before disappearing like figments of her imagination.

Kate decides to put the bizarre encounters out of her mind. She has bigger problems to worry about: like that elite military academy that’s been pursuing her gifted little brother. When one of their cadets shows up at her high school, he creates instant pandemonium. And just happens to be one of those mysterious guys. Coincidence? Mama said there’s no such thing. And to always trust her instinct. But that might be kind of hard, because every time she’s around Cadet Peter Davenport, her gut starts flip-flopping on her. And her heart.

Can Kate keep it together long enough to stop Cadet Davenport’s mission? She’s about to find out. And—once again—how neatly life can be split into before and after.

Author C.J. Daly

Meet the Author:

CJ Daly grew up on the scrabbly plains of Eastern New Mexico. When she was supposed to be helping her six siblings with chores on the family ranch, she was really sneaking behind dusty haystacks to read. And dreaming about becoming a writer.

After graduating high school, CJ moved to Big D, where she quickly put herself through college while trying to rid herself of her country accent. She had better luck with college, graduating magna cum laude with a degree in English literature. After teaching a few years and pausing to have back-to-back boys, she began writing in earnest.

A few years later, “The Academy Saga” was born. It instantly earned a Readers’ Favorite 5-STAR seal of approval and became an Amazon best seller.

Author: Carolyn Miller

Genre: Christian Contemporary Romance

regaining Mercy

A mom ready to do anything for her son. A man determined to win the woman he loves. Going on Love at First Glance had seemed like such a good idea. She didn’t care about finding Mr. Right. No, Mindy Murray chose the reality TV show for more mercenary reasons.  A mom’s gotta do what a mom’s gotta do when it comes to feeding her son.

When Mindy returns to Elnora, the girl from the “wrong side of the island” just wants a chance to rebuild her reputation. Too bad the folks at church don’t practice what the preacher preaches.

Enter Dermott Reilly. The interim boss at Greener Gardens has always had a soft spot for Mindy and her son, but with his new responsibilities, an important garden competition, and a few other concerns, he finds it difficult to prove himself to her.

A tropical storm and a missing child prove that sometimes grace appears in the most unusual ways.

Regaining Mercy concludes the Elnora Island romances of the Independence Islands Series, featuring five islands, six authors, and a boatload of happily ever-afters.

The Independence Islands Series: beach reads aren’t just for summer anymore.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I enjoyed another trip back to Elnora as I read Mindy and Dermott’s story. Mindy needs a job to support she and her son, but when self confidence trying to destroy Mindy and any chances she will have holding a job. Of only she wouldn’t have taking the job on the reality TV show, but she does, and it looks like it will haunt her forever. Dermott enjoys being around Mindy and wants to help her if she would let him, but this just causes even more problems for Mindy.

I love anything author Carolyn Miller writes and this one is no different. She does an excellent job creating a cast of characters that you will fall in love with. I really like Mindy and enjoyed watching her character develop throughout the story. I felt so bad for her, the way people treated her, and like that immediately Dermott is attracted to her. I love his strong personality and I would love to have him come and landscape my yard and add all the flowers he likes! I need to stop rambling because there is so much that goes on in this story and I want to tell it all but I can’t. You need to read it for yourself. This is part of a beach read series, but it can really be enjoyed anywhere, anytime. If you enjoy a nice clean read with a little faith element running through it, you will love this one. I highly recommend Regaining Mercy for your reading enjoyment. Thi one gets Five Stars from me.

About the Author

carolyn-miller-HR-4

Carolyn Miller is an Australian author of inspirational romance, particularly that of the Regency era, and loves drawing readers into fictional worlds where flawed people can grow in faith, hope and love through stories that show the truth of God’s grace in our lives.

More from Carolyn

Have you ever wondered what might happen if a failed TV reality star was to return home to her narrow minded community? What if she’s been tarred and feathered with disgrace?

In our world of insta-fame, selfies and fakebook, I find it fascinating that so many people are entranced by so-called reality TV, with its editing and narratives and shiny-eyed hopefuls chasing money, love and dreams. But what if it doesn’t work out? What happens next? How do you resume ‘normal life’ when you’ve been living in a very artificial world?

I enjoy writing fiction that is grounded in reality, with realistic, flawed characters who are on a God journey to find faith and freedom. My contemporary and historical novels often see characters struggle with the choices they’ve made (don’t we all?), which is exactly what single mom Mindy is dealing with.

Combine Mindy’s challenges with those faced by gardening expert, Dermott, a man whose stone wall building skills are better than his way with women, or his inability to hide his attraction to his former co-worker’s younger sister.

Regaining Mercy encourages us to see ourselves as God does, to not let the labels of the past to shape our future. Along the way, readers will enjoy the honest portrayals of family, friendship and faith.

I’m so glad people are really enjoying my new contemporary books, where I can bring my love of gardens (& my horticulturalist hubby’s expertise!) to a new audience. Want to see what’s growing in my garden? Check out my website www.carolynmillerauthor.com – and you might even see some of my husband’s famous stone walls!

If you enjoy stories of hope, heart and humor, then you’ll be sure to enjoy this novel about a prodigal and the patient gardener who helps her find God’s mercy – and renewed hope for her heart.

Happy reading!

Carolyn

Book Description:

“How can I call myself a man of good conscience, when I myself am no better than a slaver?”

It’s summer 1860, and former army Captain Nathan Chambers has returned home to Virginia to claim his inheritance: a large plantation with more than one hundred slaves.  Nathan wants no part of slavery and intends to sell the farm and all its slaves.  But even as he arrives home, enduring fearful and downcast stares from despondent black faces, he knows what he must do … and the price he must pay for doing it.

As Nathan works to carry out his ambitious plans, he is troubled by rumors of succession and war, even as a villainous neighbor plots a violent end to their decades-long family feud.

And then Evelyn arrives … strikingly beautiful, spirited, and intriguing, she is the daughter of an old family friend.  But the more Nathan is drawn in by her charms, the harder she pushes him away …

The Road to the Breaking Series is an epic tale of a young nation seething with debauchery, brutality, corruption, and political intrigue, unwittingly on the brink of a deadly precipice: the American Civil War.  In Book 2 of the series, Nathan Chambers has returned from the violent army life out West, only to face a heart wrenching Enigma at home.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Enigma continues the story of book one in the series, Road to the Breaking, and it’s good to read these books in order because one picks up where the other one leaves off. I enjoyed following the story of Captain Nathan Chambers as he heads to Virginia to claim the inheritance left to him. This could prove a problem because Nathan wants nothing to do with slavery or owning the slaves on the farm. Again Chris Bennett writes an amazing story that will keep you reading till the very last page. The characters from book one as well as new characters introduced are so well creates and tell their story well as the plot unfolds. And I love all of the historical details throughout the book. You historical fiction buffs will have a great time with this series. Every part of it is so interesting and intriguing. And again, the ending kind of leaves readers hanging and waiting for the next book before we really see what’s going on. I look forward to reading book three and I highly recommend book one, Road to the Breaking and book two Enigma for you to read now. I think you will find this a very worthy series. Enigma is a worthy Five stars for me.

Join me in reading this interesting interview from the author.

What made you write a book about the Civil War? Are you a big history buff?

My grandmother was a high school history teacher (and so was her daughter, my Aunt Gay who has helped me do research for my series), and also very into reading historical non-fiction books. She had a room in her house that had bookshelves floor to ceiling on three walls, and a large portion of these were on the American Civil War. I remember sitting in that room, looking through those books, and asking her questions about them. So the names Grant, Sherman, and Lee (along with Lincoln and Jefferson Davis) were well known to me from an early age. My Dad was also a big history buff, though more into WWII as that had been the big event of his childhood. As you can imagine, I took a lot of history courses in college, along with political science. So, when it came time to write a book, historical fiction seemed a natural fit, and it was a toss-up between the American Civil War and WWII. I had several plots in mind for both time periods, but settled on the Civil War story because it seemed the most compelling and timely with all that was currently happening in the world.

Do you ever get writer’s block? What helps you overcome it?

I have not experienced it yet, I’m happy to say. But I have recently concluded that writing historical fiction gives you a big advantage in overcoming that potential scenario. Each time I have wondered what the plot should be in the next book of the series, I just dive into the historical research (i.e. “What happened in this specific time period in the area where my main characters are located?”) and end up discovering some obscure but fascinating details of things that were actually happening. As they say, “truth is stranger than fiction”, and “you just can’t make this stuff up!” I love including actual people and events in my books, then just weaving my fictional characters in. I think most of my readers would be surprised (if they did the research) to discover how many of the things in my books are factual.

What is your next project?

I’m currently working on Book 6 of Road to the Breaking, and it’s looking like, according to the timeline, it’s going to be a ten-book series to get it to the end of the Civil War.  After that I have a few things in mind:

  • Continuing with Nathan’s descendants through time, with a tradition of attending West Point and being involved in the nation’s major conflicts
  • Writing one of the WWII plots I had originally considered
  • A Road to the Breaking prequal (Nathan’s childhood?)
  • Or a standalone, spinoff novel focusing one or more of the interesting side characters of the original series.

I’m thinking I may ask my readers for input on what they’d like to see next (maybe do a poll?)

Do you snack while writing? Favorite snack?

I like sipping Scotch with a bite of dark chocolate. One of my favorite quotes is from Hemingway, “Write drunk, edit sober,” which has some truth to it, though I think the Scotch works best in moderation!

Is there a specific ritualistic thing you do during your writing time?

Mostly just the Scotch (see above.) Other than that, I tend to write pretty much any chance I get, so I keep a laptop laying around the house that I can use whenever I have a few spare moments, or an idea hits me. Otherwise, the hardcore writing is done at my desk on a regular workstation, with two large monitors (the one on the left is used for doing the research, and the one on the write for actual writing.)

If you were stuck on a deserted island, which 3 books would you want with you?

Lord of the Rings, King James Bible, and Road to the Breaking (can I have the whole series?)

Book Title:  Amal the Thirsty Gamal: A Christmas Tale by Robert Schorr

Category:  Children’s Fiction (Ages 3-7),  38 pages

GenreChildren’s Picture Book

Publisher:  Mascot

Release date:  July, 2021

Content Rating:  G.

Book Description:

The charming tale told in Amal the Thirsty Gamal is for every young person who might be anxious about how they are viewed by those around them (and yes, camels care about that too!). For so long, our little hero has been hearing taunts and jeers and thinking negative things about himself, his looks, and especially his little hump. But—oh, brace yourselves! — because Wise Men are traveling with Amal’s special caravan, and when one of them speaks up around the campfire one night, everything changes for little Amal!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Amal is so anxious. They are at it again. The talk about him being different, and especially his hump and this makes him sad. But things are about to change for our friend Amal, and author Robert Schorr tells all about it in his sweet book Amal the Thirsty Gamal: A Christmas Tale. This adorable book is awesome for children because it teaches the valuable lesson of acceptance, because it is ok to be different, despite what others say about you. Just because we may be different, it doesn’t mean we can’t be valuable and useful. Just like Amal found an important way to be useful, so can you, and anyone else.

I love this story about a sweet little camel with a hump that is different. Robert Schorr does a fantastic job writing this story so it can be read to little ones, and really older kids and adults alike will love and benefit from reading about Amal. And I love how illustrator Kristina Koontz does an absolutely fabulous job of bringing the story to life with her adorable illustrations on the cover and throughout the book. I love how the pictures she creates for each page fits so perfectly with the words to the story. I think this book would be perfect for very young readers, after hearing the story, to look at the pictures and tell the story themselves. I love it when small children do this, and it’s the fabulous illustrations that make it happen. Schorr and Koontz work together so well to make this story happen. Amal the Thirsty Gamal: A Christmas Tale by Robert Schorr will be awesome for daycare and school classrooms as well as libraries where children’s books may be. I highly encourage you to check out this adorable book for your little ones. This one is a sound Five Stars in my book.

🐪🐪🐪

Q: It looks like you had a lot of fun writing Amal the Thirsty Gamal, but were there any challenges along the way? Did you encounter any difficulties?

Robert: Oh, I did have a lot of fun with it, but yes, as a matter of fact, the entire premise of a “lovable camel” is challenging, if you think about it. I mean, we don’t often think of camels as “adorable” or “cuddly.” They’re overwhelmingly large and gangly and they have a rather stern expression on their faces. But my goal was to somehow make my little readers feel sorry for this one — want to hug him and comfort him and take away his sorrows. And that was rather challenging. I remember when I first started in, looking at pictures of camels, thinking “Man! They’re ugly! How am I going to do this?” But they’re not ugly! They’re beautiful creatures! I’ve totally changed on that now. And I owe that to Amal.

Q: Your illustrator certainly helped with that, didn’t she? She really did make him look cute.

Robert: Oh, goodness! Yes! Tina is just marvelous. She is a fabulous artist, as you can easily see.

Q: That’s Kristina Koontz.

Robert: Yes. I’ve known Tina as a friend for years, and I knew she was a good artist, but I had no idea she was capable of doing what she did for me. The story was already written when I asked if she could do a few sketches, and I was just blown away by her very first one. You know, we worked on this during the COVID months, and we had the best time doing it, and—man! I threw some challenges at her! “Can you make Amal look more anxious?” “Can you make him look worried and thirsty at the same time?” “I’d like to have him kicking up his heels on the way into Bethlehem. Do you think you could do that?” She was unfazed! No problem at all.

Q: She made the camel pray!

Robert: That’s my favorite. That and the “Tall/Small” signs on page 7. And the Wise Man’s “Camel Anatomy Chart” on page 21. Honestly, Tina did more to write the book than I did — or to make it come alive, anyway.

Q: It’s beautiful. I don’t suppose you had to do much research for your book.

Robert: Oh, tons of research! Deep, deep stuff, like: “what’s in a hump?” and “is myrrh really a liquid?” Things like that! (it can be either a liquid or a gum, but the liquid form was popular in ancient times). No, seriously, it was all just fun, from beginning to end. I didn’t research it much.

Q: There have been other books about downtrodden animals. What makes yours any different?

Robert: Hmm…yeah. What I find most pleasing about my story are the depths of it. My little readers probably won’t pick up on them—and they don’t have to—but I secretly hope that one day they will, perhaps when they go back and re-read it.

Q: Like what kind of depths?

Robert: Well, the “strange gifts,” for example, that are destined for the Christ-child. “Oh, the gold of course is perfectly fine but incense and myrrh?” One belongs in a temple; the other is used for tombs. And that’s deep! For a nativity gift? That’s deep! The stranger who comes in from the west and proclaims: “A king has been born in a manger of hay, it’s a strange way to come if you ask my opinion, with no palace or splendor or signs of dominion…” Oh, yes, it is strange. And deep! Everything about Christmas is deep, actually. The youngest ones don’t need to “get” any of this, but I’m hoping the story “lasts” a little longer than the childhood years to some degree.

Q: Do you have a favorite children’s book writer these days?

Robert: Oh, Sandra Boynton surely. “The Going to Bed Book” is my favorite, but they’re all priceless. I love her artwork. And her humor—it keeps popping up all over her website: sandraboynton.com. Look for her “motto,” for example. She’s really special.

Q: With your book in mind, what would you like to tell every young reader?

Robert: Oh, that’s easy! “You are perfectly made! And very special! And greatly loved by the One who made you.”

Woman in Shadow

by Carrie Stuart Parks

July 12-23, 2021 Tour

Synopsis:

Woman in Shadow by Carrie Stuart Parks

Carrie Stuart Parks combines her expertise as a forensic artist with her ability to craft a gripping story in this page-turning web of light and shadow.

A woman off the grid.

Darby Graham thinks she’s on a much-needed vacation in remote Idaho to relax. But before she even arrives at the ranch, an earthquake strikes—her first clue that something is amiss. Then when a cabin on the edge of town is engulfed in flames and problems at the ranch escalate, Darby finds herself immersed in a chilling mystery.

A town on fire.

A serial arsonist sends taunting letters to the press after each fire. As a forensic linguist, this is Darby’s area of expertise . . . but the scars it’s caused her also the reason she’s trying to escape from her life.

A growing darkness.

As the shadows continue to move in, the pieces of the town around her come into sharper focus. Can she trust the one man who sees her clearly?

Praise for Woman in Shadow:

“Unique, witty, and hilarious, Carrie’s voice shines throughout Woman in Shadow. The perfect mix of intrigue, mystery and danger, this is most definitely a book for my keeper shelf.”

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Forensic Linguist, Darby Graham thinks she is on vacation, but her trip to Mule Deer Ranch in Targhee Falls, Idaho is anything but a vacation. Before she hardly gets there things start happening, an earthquake, a fire, and a mystery that she would soon be trying to figure out. I have only read a few books from Carrie Parks, and I have no idea why. I will surely be looking for more of Parks books to read, as well as follow her future books. Women in Shadow is an amazing read. A read I will not soon forget.

With exceptional characters created by Carrie Stuart Parks, readers are taken on a unique journey that will keep them on the edge of their seats biting their nails!! Mule Deer Ranch is a unique place and perfect for the story setting. I really like Darby, and when Deputy Bram White comes in the picture the story gets more intense as they work together to find out who the culprit is that is starting so many fires, and why it seems they are trying to close the Ranch down. There is a lot going on in this book with tensions flying high, and the dangers lurking in the shadows. Parks does a phenomenal job of writing this story, knowing exactly how to keep the readers attention as the story unfolds. And as for the Woman in Shadows the title talks about, well you need to read the book to find out what that is all about. If you enjoy a good clean suspense/mystery that will bring you much enjoyment. I highly recommend Women in Shadows by Carrie Stuart Parks. It is a story that will pull at your heart strings and stay with you for a while.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a  copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Read an excerpt:

Chapter 1

Targhee Falls, Idaho

“Why are those dogs barking?” I pointed across the wooden picnic table toward two obviously upset canines yelping nearby.

A man staring at a clipboard didn’t look up. “They’re dogs. That’s what they do. Are you Darby Graham?”

“Yes.”

The man checked something on his clipboard. “Good. You’re all here.” He had to speak up to be heard over the commotion.

Before I could ask about the dogs again, he turned and strolled toward the nearby general store.

Although the man seemed unmoved by the dogs’ distress, the other people seated around me on Adirondack chairs or at picnic tables had stopped speaking to each other and were staring. The dogs—a black Lab cross with hound-length ears, and a huge Great Dane mix—both had their tails tucked between their legs and were howling.

The picnic table trembled.

I lifted my hands off the rough pine surface but could still feel the movement under my body. A flock of birds burst from the treetops. Pinecones dropped to the ground from the towering ponderosas.

Earthquake.

I was seated near the general store, just below a plate-glass window. The glass rippled, then rattled.

Heart thudding, I dove under the table. The ground rolled under me like ocean waves. A low rumbling was followed by car alarms going off from the parking lot on the other side of the store.

The black Lab flew under the table and landed in my lap. I wrapped my arms around the quivering dog, feeling the prominent bones of her spine and rib cage. “It’s okay there, girl. You’re safe. Your big buddy isn’t so scared—”

The second quaking dog joined us, his large body pressing against my back.

The earthquake ended.

“All over.” I reached around and scratched the Dane’s chest, feeling more bones. Didn’t anyone ever feed these dogs?

Both dogs seemed content to stay put, but the weight of the Lab—even though she was too thin—was still more than my leg was used to and it was rapidly going to sleep. “Come on, sweet girl, time to get up,” I whispered.

Both dogs took the hint.

On the other hand, here under the table seemed a nice place to stay. Tucked into the shadows, I didn’t need to worry about anyone staring at me. I had room to stretch out and could smell the cut grass. I’d be prepared should another earthquake come. And my assignment was to maintain a low profile. Sitting on the ground under a table seemed to be as low profile as I could get.

Two legs appeared next to me. “Miss Graham?”

Flapperdoodle. Mr. Clipboard found me.

I crawled between the bench and table, sliding onto the seat, then glanced around. Several other people had taken similar action. Only Clipboard had noticed my reluctance to leave my hiding place.

One by one, the car alarms stopped. The slight breeze stirred the fragrance of fallen pine needles.

Mr. Clipboard stared at me for a moment, then turned toward the others. He was holding a number of fabric bags imprinted with Mule Shoe Ranch. “Don’t be worried, folks. The town of Targhee Falls is less than fifteen miles from Yellowstone. The national park routinely has between one and three thousand quakes a year—”

“Excuse me, but I’ve heard most of those quakes aren’t noticeable,” a gray-haired woman in a denim shirt said.

“Obviously some are.” The man gave her a rueful half smile and started handing out the bags after checking the attached name tags. “I’m Sam, owner of the general store over there.” He nodded toward the building featuring a two-story false front and wooden sidewalk. The peeling sign said Sam’s Mercantile. “I provide Mule Shoe with transportation, supplies, and assistance during team-building exercises. Inside these bags you’ll find a great deal of information about your stay at the ranch. The owner, Roy Zaring, wanted you to have these while you’re waiting for your transportation—”

“When will that be?” asked a handsome teen with flawless olive skin and a thick lock of black hair. “I’m not getting any cell service here.” He held up his phone. An impeccably dressed man and woman sitting at the same table gave each other sideways glances.

Sam finished handing out the bags, turned, and looked at the youth. “Those your folks?” His gaze flickered to the two people sitting with the young man.

“Yeah.”

“And I’m guessing your mom? Dad? Both? Told you they were here to take a team-building—”

“Watercolor workshop.”

“A five-day art class in the wilds of Idaho, right?”

“Yeeeaah.”

“Son, the Mule Shoe Dude Ranch is a primitive facility. No Wi-Fi. No cell reception. No television, radio . . . no electricity. You’ll have a cabin with a fireplace, a composting toilet, and a lantern at night.”

The color drained from the young man’s face. “What?” he whispered.

“That reminds me,” Sam said. “I’ll collect your cell phones and will keep them here and charged for when you return.”

I reached into my purse, took out my phone, and placed it on the table for Sam to collect. Whose brilliant idea was it to send me on assignment to a primitive facility when they know I need my computer and electricity? And five days with all these strangers? I wouldn’t even need to unpack.

“Don’t worry.” An attractive older woman sitting on a wooden Adirondack chair grinned at the boy. “There’s plenty of hot water for showers, courtesy of the natural geothermal environment. The water’s gravity fed and the food is world-class.” She looked around at all of us. “I’ve had an interest in the Mule Shoe and was here last summer, although I have to admit, I prefer to visit this time of year. Late September is perfect. You all are going to love it.”

The young man’s lips compressed into a thin line, and he seemed loath to let go of his cell. Sam kept tugging the phone until the youth relinquished it. “But what is there to do?” he asked no one in particular.

“Most of us are here for the art lessons.” Denim Shirt reached into her bag, pulled out a piece of paper, and held it up. “Listen.” She read from it. “‘You’ll find trail rides, fishing, canoeing, gold panning, mineral collecting, archery, photography, hiking, campfires, swimming—’”

“That’s what I mean.” The young man ran his hand through his hair. “There’s nothing to do.”

I tugged out the same brochure. Welcome, honored guests. We look forward to serving you during your stay with us. Your experiences here will be unforgettable for all the right reasons! You should bring to Mule Shoe your mindset for success.

Yeah, right. I’d like to set my mind on getting in, getting done, and getting home. “Sam, you mentioned transportation . . .”

“Horse and wagon.”

I was afraid of that. “Do you have a regular timetable?”

This time Sam actually focused on me. “No. The horse and wagon are available on an as-needed basis, mostly to transport new groups and supplies.”

From bad to worse. I was stuck. Now would be a good time to find a bathroom. Riding a bumpy, horse-drawn wagon would be uncomfortable enough without a full bladder. Besides, if I left now, no one would notice my slight limp. I normally wanted to be invisible, to disappear into a crowd. When Scott Thomas, my counselor, told me not to stand out, to blend in, he didn’t have to say it twice. Your final assignment before leaving us here in Clan Firinn is to check out Mule Shoe Ranch. We’ve heard rumblings that something’s not right. You’ll be registered as a guest. I’ll tell you more once you get there.

I was irritated at being sent out like this with no idea of what was expected. I now know why. Had I known I wouldn’t be able to use my computer programs or the internet, I would have put my foot down. I was fortunate to have a good memory for words.

I’d heard through the Clan Firinn grapevine that those getting ready to leave—“graduate” as they called it—would have a project that would test their progress toward wholeness. I figured they’d find out soon enough that I wasn’t ready to leave.

I rose, picked up my purse, and made my way to the general store. A cowbell jangled as I entered. “‘I got a fever,’” I muttered. “‘And the only prescription is more cowbell.’” The line made me smile. Why worry about earthquakes, lack of electricity, and the inability to do my work when the world needed more cowbell?

“What?” A young, freckle-faced woman with a smear of dirt on her nose stopped replacing items on the shelf.

“Iconic Saturday Night Live line—more cowbell?”

“Huh?”

“Never mind.” The interior had old oak floors, a tin ceiling, and a long counter with a glass display case. The sun through the window spotlighted twirling dust motes. Various cans still littered the floor, courtesy of the earthquake.

“Just let me know if ya need something.”

“Powder room?”

“Huh?”

“WC?”

“I think we’re sold out.”

“John? Head? Loo? Restroom?”

“Toilet?” She nodded to her right.

Fortunately, the primitive conditions did not include the store bathroom. Returning to the store, I picked up a can of soup that had rolled near me. “Do you know anything about those two dogs?” I handed her the can.

“Why are ya asking?” The woman placed it on the shelf.

“They just seem thin, that’s all.”

“Yeah, well.” She adjusted the display. “Sam’s been feeding ’em, but that’s gonna stop.”

My neck tingled. “I don’t understand.” I gave her a steady gaze.

She paused her work and looked around. We were alone in the store, but she dropped her voice to just above a whisper. “He’s just waitin’ for all of you to leave to the ranch.”

The tingling grew to an itch. My years of training as a forensic linguist kicked in, even though I was rusty. I grew very still and waited, listening for more clues in her language.

She gave up straightening the cans. “It’s like this: The dogs were owned by an old lady. I bet she was, like, at least forty.”

“Positively ancient. One foot in the grave.” I gave her a slight smile.

“Right. Her name was Shadow Woman. That’s what everyone called her. Well, that’s the nice name anyway. She was, like, a hermit, but a pretty good artist.” She jerked her thumb at a drawing on the wall behind the cash register.

Were owned, was. Past tense. I widened my smile to encourage her. “Why did everyone call her Shadow Woman?”

The clerk gnawed on a hangnail for a moment. “I guess ’cause she was weird, ya know, like she lived in the shadows. Creepy. Always showed up here at the store at dusk or when it was dark. Sam said she could sneak right up next to you in the shadows and you’d never see her. And her face was weird.”

“Weird how?”

“Like, really weird.”

“Ah, that clarifies it. Where did she come from?”

“Sam said she ran away from a group home near Smelterville.”

“I can’t imagine why.”

“Right, you know? No one wanted her. Anyway, she owned Holly—that’s the Lab mix—and Maverick, the Anna-toolian sheepdog.”

“Anatolian? From Anatolia in Asia Minor?”

“Yeah, that’s what I said.”

“Of course. I thought the big dog was half Great Dane, half mastiff.”

“Nope. Sam looked it up. Anna-whatevers are super-expensive livestock guard dogs from Turkey or France, I forget which.”

“They are such similar countries,” I murmured.

“Right. So anyway, Sam was surprised that Shadow Woman had one.”

Sam looked it up. Looking for value? Surprised that Shadow Woman had one. Not just a hermit but poor? Broke? “I see.” I leaned slightly against the shelving unit. “You mentioned Shadow . . .”

“Right. Um . . . so Shadow Woman came to town like once a month with her mule, like I said, always after sunset, and bought stuff, like Spam. She’d usually pay her bill about every other month. The dogs always came with her. Six months ago, you know, she stopped coming.”

“Let me guess. She owed Sam a lot of money.”

“Right. Boy-howdy was he steamed about it. Then he, you know, got a check and note from the old woman to pay her bill, but the check bounced higher than a buckin’ bronco.”

“Did anyone follow up, call the police?”

“Not right away ’cause the dogs moved in, first Holly, then Maverick. So, you know, Sam started to feed them. And . . . I think someone changed his mind on what to do with the dogs.”

Cluster of you knows. Sensitive topic. I kept my gaze on her and nodded again.

She glanced down and plucked a piece of lint from her sleeve. “Sam always said he’d get his pound of flesh from her, whatever that means.”

“I’m sure it originated in Turkey or France.”

“Right. Foreign-like. Um . . . Sam finally got close enough to Maverick to see he’d been spayed.”

“Neutered?”

“What?”

“Never mind.” A neutered dog was of zero value, and Sam stopped feeding them. I made an effort to unclench my hands. “How have the dogs survived?”

“You know, folks around town feel sorry for them . . .”

The cowbell jangled.

The clerk straightened and glanced in that direction. Her cheeks flamed and her tongue flickered out to moisten her lips.

I turned.

A sheriff’s deputy charged to the bathroom, disappeared for a few moments, then reappeared and sauntered toward us, replacing fallen items on the shelves. His ordinary brown hair was the only average thing about him. He was otherwise a walking modern-day Adonis, his face chiseled by a master carver. He finally looked up and smiled at the clerk, exposing more teeth than the Osmond family, and seemed to enjoy her reaction to his arrival.

My hand automatically reached to fluff my hair. I stopped and squared my oversized glasses instead.

He looked at me, his eyes widening. “Hello there. I’m Bram White.”

“I’m—”

“Leaving,” the clerk said. “Goin’ to Mule Shoe. She’s a guest.”

“Darby Graham.” I glanced at his holstered pistol, then out the window at the two dogs lying under a tree. Check bounced. Sam’s been feeding ’em, but that’s gonna stop. Pound of flesh.

Deputy Bram glanced at his watch.

My neck was crawling with reasons to scratch it.

“Can I get you a Coke or somethin’?” she asked me. “It shouldn’t be long.” The clerk moved toward an ancient cooler. “I’d bet the wagon got slowed down by the earthquake.”

The two dogs began barking.

“See? I told ya. Betcha that’s the wagon now.” The clerk moved toward the front of the store, brushing past Bram. “Excuse me,” she said. At the window, she glanced out, then looked at the officer. “Yep. The wagon’s here.” Without taking her eyes from Bram, she said to me, “You can go now.”

Sam stuck his head in the door. “Miss Graham? Time to leave.” He spotted Bram and gave the man a quick nod.

I gave in and scratched my neck. This was none of my business. No need to get involved. No reason to draw attention to myself. Low profile. Right. I straightened. “I think I’ll wait here. Catch the next wagon.” The words came out without my thinking, but they seemed right.

Sam moved into the store. “I’m sorry, Miss Graham, there won’t be a next wagon. It’s quite a distance to the ranch and it’s getting late. You’ll need to leave now.” He wiped his hands on his slacks, glanced at the clerk, then at the deputy.

The itch was now a full-scale conviction. “Your clerk here—”

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Kate is too young to be a mom, but when her mother passes away, her father doesn’t leave her much choice except to take care of her brothers. When a couple strangers come to town, it is fast gossip because it’s a small town. Kate got a surprise, however when she finds they are wanting her brother Drew for a boarding school. And one of the guys, Pete seems to have his eyes set on Kate.

This is a really good story, with some Suspense and a bit of mystery. There’s a lot going on, and a lot of detail especially in the first part of the book that makes it kinda slow for a while. But gets better as the story goes on. Author C.J. Daly creates interesting and intriguing characters who develop well as the story unfolds. I really like Kate and her brothers, especially the little one, he is adorable. We learn a lot about the three over the course of the book and I really enjoyed getting to know more about them and their life. I felt bad for Kate because she has to grow up fast. But it was enjoyable as well as intriguing to know them and their purpose. A lot of research has gone into this story as well, and Daly does a fantastic job writing this story in a way that it keeps you on the edge of your seats because you want to find out what is going to happen next. It’s a pretty long book so hang with it, you don’t want to miss a thing that’s happening. If you enjoy a good suspense, you will enjoy this one. This is Four Stars for me.

EXCERPT:

The sun rose brightly the next morning, shooting green sparks off the grass. The light played games with itself, rolling and tumbling around the campsite in the forms of animals and birds. Bobble and Mikeala jumped up, squealing gleefully to chase the sprinting forms, as pure dawn was one of the few times when the Everything was still able to be clearly seen.

Mary Jingo lay wrapped in a blanket that Van Clare had pulled out of her backpack, in that thin space between sleep and waking. She had laid awake for a few hours the night before, listening to Van Clare’s breathing and Mikeala’s and Bobble’s occasional giggles as they kept watch from the mouth of the cave. She tried to fit the pieces together like a puzzle of everything she had learned so far about this strange place. That a connection exists between her world and this one. She had been chosen by some mysterious force, or she had chosen this mysterious force (that sounded a lot like THE Force, if she were honest) to come help the People of this world. The Everything was shrinking because People wouldn’t leave their houses. The Everything sounded vaguely like Mary’s mom, who constantly complained that everyone spent too much time on their phones, or in front of their screens. Mary’s dad would then agree and head down the hall to his study to do research on the internet about ecommerce.

Mary accepted now that this was not a dream, but that did not mean that she was up to the task in front of her. She could think of seven to twelve of her classmates who were braver or better suited to this task than she was. She had pushed up her pajama sleeve and rubbed her thumb over the purple spot on her wrist. She wondered how she had ended up here, of all places. Someone like her—so ordinary. She had fallen asleep then, her brain overwhelmed by all of it and had whispered to herself that maybe this time she would wake up in her own bed. So, maybe she was still not wholly convinced about the dream thing.

“Mary Jingo?” Van Clare said gently, touching Mary lightly on the shoulder. “You need to get up. We need to move to another camp before nightfall.”

Book Description:

Nothing survived “The Breaking” unchanged; lives and fortunes, love and hate, freedom and slavery …

It’s early 1860, and war hero Captain Nathaniel Chambers, commander U.S. Army Fort Davis in the west Texas wilderness, has received shocking news – his father is dead.  He must return home to Virginia and claim his inheritance before a maniacal neighbor can murder his widowed mother and seize the family plantation.

But he’s torn by a terrible dilemma – to stay in the army and turn his back on his fortune, his mother and his beloved childhood home, or become the thing he despises; a slave master!  Is there no other choice?

An epic journey across a young nation seething with debauchery, brutality, corruption, and political intrigue, unwittingly on the brink of an unimaginable disaster; the American Civil War.  Nathan Chambers has left the violent army life behind in Texas, never imaging he’s on the very Road to The Breaking.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Captain Nathaniel Chambers, commander United States Army Fort Davis has difficult decisions to make, mainly on that would take him back to Virginia to his mom and the inheritance he has at home. Road to the Breaking takes readers on a journey that will not be forgotten.

I really enjoyed this book very much. Author Chris Bennett creates a cast of characters that develop perfectly as the story unfolds and the journey continues. I read a ecopy of this book and I couldn’t put my kindle down for long because I wanted to see what was coming next. And I wasn’t disappointed. This book is chunked full off exciting adventure and often hard times but good times as well. I highly recommend Road to the Breaking to all of you history buffs out there! This one a Five Stars for me!

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

The Cowgirl’s Sacrifice
(Hearts of Oklahoma #4)
By Tina Radcliffe
Inspirational Romance
Paperback & ebook,  224 Pages
July 27, 2021 by Love Inspired

This cowgirl has wandered back home…

Will she choose her past or her future?

Needing time to heal after a rodeo injury, Kate Rainbolt heads to her family ranch to accept the foreman job her brothers offered her months ago. But the position’s already been filled by her ex-boyfriend, Jess McNally, and the only open job reports to him. With Jess as her temporary boss—and turning into something more—might he finally convince Kate to put down roots?

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Tina Radcliffe has been a favorite Love Inspired author for me for a good while. I love her sweet and clean Romances and I always enjoy reading them. And The Cowgirl’s Sacrifice is another amazing read by Radcliffe. How much fun can you get when Kate Rainbolt is home healing from a rodeo injury and the only job open she can have with her brothers reports to her ex-boyfriend. I love when exes are kind of forced to work together, it makes for an amazing read.

I love the small Oklahoma town of Rebel which Radcliffe created for this wonderful series, a town that would be such fun to live in. The character created by the author are phenomenal, I have enjoyed getting to know them better and now I’m so glad I could read Kate and Jess’s story. Though it does start out a bit touchy. Kate has been traveling with the rodeo for so long, being home is going to be strange, and even more with Jess McNally in the mix. I so much enjoyed the interactions between Kate and Jess as they worked together, and seeing their attractions grow. Even though I knew the ending, it was fun reading the way it happened. If you enjoy a good clean romance that can be pretty quickly read, you will love this one. A Cowgirl’s Sacrifice is Five Stars for me!

About the Book

Book: Catch Me If You Can

Author: Carole Brown

Genre: Romantic Suspense with a touch of quirkiness

Release date: August 5, 2021

The big cat sat on the oversized rock, ears pointed toward the sky, every muscle taut, every sense at the ready.

“S-s-shut up and f-f-forget it. You’ve s-seen nothing and know nothing. I won’t warn you again. G-g-got it?”

The cat’s head swiveled, his ears twitching as if catching the hint of threat in the whisper. A soft hiss slid from his open mouth and reinforced the overtone of evil pressing in upon the scene. Within hours, lies and dark secrets are slithering all over the campground.

Coaxed into finding the animal killer at Jamieson’s Outfitters, Tara Layne, with her sidekick, Boet, is welcomed by a threatening whisper and the unfriendly eyes of a rugged and devastatingly handsome manager. Wesley Clarke, both interesting and frustrating, holds an attraction for Tara that is primitive and exasperating.

Intermingled with her search, Tara deals with her own heartbreaking buried secrets. When a strange old Native American probes into the recesses of her heart, he encourages her to face her bitter feelings.

As Tara closes in on her search, she finds herself—and Boet—the target of someone who’s determined to outrun and outsmart her. Someone determined not to get caught.

His theme:

Run as fast as you can, you can’t catch me.

The question:

Book Title:  To Every Page a Turning: One Life’s Journey by Carl Buccellato

Category: Adult Fiction (18 +),  284 pages

Genre: Historical Fiction

Publisher:  Mascot

Release date:   April, 2021

Content Rating:  PG. Content not suitable for young children.

Book Description:

A parallel to Buccellato’s own life, the main character in To Every Page A Turning: One Life’s Journey considers the trials and tribulations throughout his life, beginning in the 1950s. Traveling through hope, a great cause, disenchantment, hopelessness, discovery, and rebirth, the novel also recounts the travel of a generation as they move through time.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

To Every Page a Turning: One Life’s Journey by Carl Buccellato is a sweet historical fiction that follows the life of a young boy as he journey’s through life. The main character parallels the authors own life and the goods and the bads of that life as his journey unfolds. I love the opening of the book with the old man and woman sitting on their porch drinking coffee. This sets the mood for the story for me. The journey of this man was interesting, entertaining, fun at times, but there are many times it was the harsh reality of living life and the difficulties he faced along the way. This is a somewhat different historical fiction that will grab your heart and keep it for a while.

Carl Buccellato does such a good job writing this book. For those of us born in the 1950’s it was interesting to think back through those times and years. The main character as well as the supporting characters were well crafted and thought out and their development throughout the story was spot on. I appreciate the references in his faith in the Lord and it was really nice as well as encouraging the way he didn’t back down from what he bbelieves. There is a lot more in this short book that will have you laughing and sometimes in tears, and I highly encourage you to check this book out. This one is a firm Five Stars for me.

NOW JOIN ME IN RREADING THIS SPECIAL INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR CARL BUCCELLATO

Q.  What made you write this book and where did you get the inspiration for the characters in this book?

A. I have been journaling and keeping notes for over 50 years to address issues that I had during my youth, having grown up in a home with an alcoholic parent. These journals helped me come to answers for repressed feelings and emotions that I had for a long time. Recently after re-reading these journals, I concluded that there were many items in there that could assist other people in their journeys through life and quest for wholeness. So, I was determined to write this novel. All the characters in this book are real and all the events that took place did happen.

Q: Why didn’t you identify the name of the key character?

A: I believe that the book represents a generation rather than an individual. While it closely resembles my life traveling through the latter half of the 20th century from World War II through 1996, it also mirrors, I believe, the lives and issues of most people of my generation. There are 17 million surviving war babies in America, and 75 million baby boomers. All these people live with the changes and the paradigm shift of the 20th century, with all its dilemmas and radical change — and there were many. They all lived through similar experiences — maybe not the same, but similar experiences to those that I did and have reflected here in this book. The changes of coming of age, education, the changes imposed upon us by political change, economic change, and certainly the war years, were very difficult to endure. Raising a family, starting a business, dealing with drug addictions, alcoholism, divorce — all these things came into play. Perhaps the lessons I learned and the travels I took depicted in this book will help others in their journey through life. I certainly hope so.

Q: Where did this book take place, and were you there?

A: The book opens in New York City in the 1940s and 50s, continues through Vietnam in the1960s, back to New York, and then globally. All these events took place where they were depicted, and I was present for all of them. The memories and emotions depicted in the book come directly out of the journals and notes which were written and saved for almost 50 years, so they reflect the honest emotions of the moment.

Q:  In your opinion what is the book about?

A: This book is not a story of war, nor is it a love story. This book is a representation of a person’s life through all the dilemmas, high times and the low times, and what life is about. In many cases, this book reflects change, growth, awareness of God’s presence in my life, and the surety that with God’s direction, life gets better, and I would hope many people will find the same surety when reading this book, to assist them in their growth and then change in addressing their needs.

Q:  Where and how do you write?

A:  As I have said before, this book is a compilation of old journals and notes that were taken over a long time. Many of them written on yellow pads, mostly by hand, later on a laptop, and then compiled into a novel on a computer. Today I write in my office, and I try to write early in the morning. It is a good time for my memories to come back very smoothly and easily.

Content Rating: PG + M. My book is rated PG+M for a brief attempted rape scene. The main character, male, is laying down in a field on a ranch, with his eyes closed. A male worker comes up to him and turns him over but before anything more can happen someone saves him. One other scene where Tucker is accosted by someone with a knife briefly…but is then saved by Robert. The man with the knife yells out “ bastards” to them.
.
Book Description:

Desperate times. Danger on the rails. A journey to save a family.

It is 1933 inside a sweltering courtroom in Macon, Georgia. Fifteen-year-old Robert sits on a bench awaiting sentencing after being picked up for vagrancy and spending a night in jail. He left his home in Illinois with a neighborhood friend to ride the rails and find work to help their families. The friend turned back, too afraid to face the perils ahead. But going back empty-handed isn’t an option for Robert.

THE ONLY WAY HOME is the story of one boy’s determination to survive loss and hardship to help his family — and how fate and a violin touch the course of his life.

Fans of Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens and Sold On a Monday by Kristina Morris will love this story set during the Great Depression of a fatherless boy fighting to keep his family together..

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Afraid his family needed money to survive during the great depression, 15 years old Robert strikes out on his own to work and make money for his family. His journey was not a very good one, though he did find some nice people along the way to help him. He ended up going through several states, and also found a friend to join him on his journey. Robert is trying to find his way back home to his family, and the only way of transportation is hopping trains, so this is what he and his friend did. It was fun reading about the train hopping. I grew up very close to a train track and it was a place trains always stopped so we had our share of guys hopping trains come to our house looking for food. And my mom always fed them and my dad sent them on their way. A hobo is the name they had back then, may still have the name.

Author Jeanette Minniti does a lot of research to get the historical facts right, as well as creating characters that very well tell her story. I love Robert, he is such a sweet strong and caring young man. There were many troubling times that I was scared someone would grab him and take him for purposes that were not good. A few times I even feared for his live, but it was so reassuring to see the nice people he met along the way that will willing to overlook a few things or help him on his way. The Only Way Home by Jeanette Minniti is a fantastic historical fiction that you history buffs out there will love. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a few hours of entertainment and enjoyment. This one is Five Stars for me!

NOW JOIN ME IN READING THIS INTERESTING INTERVIEW WITH JEANETTE MINNITI

1) How long have you been writing?

I have been writing in one form or another for thirty-five years. My journalism background includes published news articles and magazine articles. In public relations work, I created newsletters for businesses and wrote the articles within them. Once my schedule allowed, I began focusing on creative writing, where my novel The Only Way Home began.

2) What comes first, the plot or characters?

This is an interesting question because it is tricky. For example, some writers have a plot in mind and then create characters to fit the story. But for my novel, The Only WaHome, I began with a protagonist in mind and then outlined the plot—both work.

3) Is there lots to do before you dive in and start writing the story?

My genre is historical fiction, so I did extensive research first. The early 1930s era included reading non-fiction books and academic articles, watching videos, and reviewing historical photos, newspaper headlines, and maps. The exploration of specific details of the period continued as I wrote each chapter. My writing method is a panster versus a plotter, so I spent much more time researching than outlining. Also, creating upfront at least a rough outline of the story and identifying the protagonist’s characteristics is critical.

5) What is the most surprising thing you discovered while writing your book?

Being a panster versus a plotter in style, I was amazed at how characters just showed up on the page, leaving me to figure out what role, if any, they would play as the story progressed. It was definitely an interesting experience.

6) Where can readers find out more about you and your book?

My website, JeanetteMinniti.com, provides background information about the novel, an excerpt from a chapter, where to buy, links to purchase, and how to contact me. I would love to hear from readers!

7) Who is your favorite author, and why?

John Grisham because he never disappoints.

Book Description:

Bentley and the Magic Sticks follows this extra-large canine as he finds out that his favorite sticks have magical powers, thanks to a wonderful Fairy Dogmother called Tia! Because other dogs are afraid of his large size Bentley has no one to play with. However, with his magic sticks he manages to make new friends and he also discovers the special

secret of why he is so big.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I have always loved the name Bentley for a dog so I was especially excited when I was able to read and review this amazing book about a big dog named Bentley. He is such an adorable dog, but lonely because he is so big. But his human loved him. And Bentley loved to collect Sticks. And the Sticks is the amazing thing in this story for Bentley. They are so very special to Bentley and he is no longer lonely.  But, in order to find out about Bentley’s special sticks,  you will have to read the story to find out why he likes them so much.

Claire Eckard does an awesome job writing this story, it is one children are not to forget. Every child loves dogs and can learn from them, just as the valuable lessons in this book. I love Bentley and his human. Bentley is so adorable even though he is so big. It makes you want to give him a big Ole hug looking at his pictures. And the illustrations by Anne York are just as awesome. I love the cover of the book and each page in-between. The colors are so bright and vibrant and the pictures are adorable and fit with the story perfectly. The pictures do an awesome job of bringing this story live before your eyes. Claire Eckard and  Anne York are the perfect duo to write and create this precious little book. I believe this book would be a wonderful addition to any library, home libraries as well as school classes and libraries. This is one book that will stay with your child for a while. This one is Five Stars for me!

Now join me in this very interesting interview with author Claire Eckard

What inspired you to write Bentley and the Magic Sticks?

In December of 2019 I adopted the biggest, shaggiest dog you can ever imagine from The Humane Society of Yuma. He was underfed, his coat was dull, and he flinched when you went to pet him. He had obviously had a rough life, even though he was only around two years old. As a long-time volunteer and former Board President I know a lot about what some of these animals have been through prior to finding their forever homes. Watching Bentley thrive, and grow into the healthy, fun-loving family member he became inspired me to put pen to paper to honor this dog that remained so kind, despite everything he must have been through.

Where did you find your illustrator, Anne York? She did such a fantastic job!

Yes! She did an amazing job. Everyone raves about her illustrations! Luckily, I knew Anne before I became an author because we both own horses and enjoy the sport of endurance riding (where you ride horses cross-country for distances of 25 to 100 miles in one day.) Anne is also an amazing artist in other ways and so it was a natural fit that I should ask her to do the illustrations for me. Even though I knew how talented she was she still blew me away with what she did for this book.

What time of day do you write?

I tend to write early in the mornings. Really early! I get up around 4.30am and try to get a few hours done before my day begins to get crazy. If I do anything later in the day it’s not usually new material, but I often review and rewrite/revise what I wrote earlier.

How many animals do you have?

Oh my Gosh! Quite a list! I have 3 dogs, 10 horses, and a miniature mule!

Have any of those animals featured in your books, other than Bentley?

Yes! One of my horses, Flash, is featured in a book series I have coming out later this year called Gallant: The Call of the Trails. He’s the bad guy, which I feel a little bad about as he’s really very sweet! Most of the dogs in the Bentley book are dogs I know. Rex and Freddie belong to my son and daughter-in-law, Zeus belongs to my other son, and Stetson belongs to a neighbor. The Fairy Dogmother, Tia, belongs to my stepmother in England! The only dog we made up was Rachel, the pink poodle!

Finally, what has excited you most about writing Bentley and the Magic Sticks?

I have absolutely loved seeing the children’s faces when we do book readings at schools and camps. They always have some good questions afterward as well! And then being a Mom’s Choice Award Winner and getting five-star reviews from Readers Favorite has been such an honor! I’m thoroughly enjoying the life of an author!

Run Time: 5 hours
Genre:  Cozy Mystery
Publisher:  McWriter Books
Release date:  May 19, 2020

Book Description:

Mysterious notes are showing up in Fiona’s kindergarten classroom, claiming a suicide from 2005 was actually a homicide. Detective Landry maintains the messages are too vague, possess no integrity, and do not warrant a review of the old case.

Fiona’s not convinced. She’s determined to find the author of the enigmatic notes and uncover the truth about a man who had many secrets and countless enemies, including Fiona’s mother and former suspect Nancy Quinn!
Can Fiona crack this cold case, and what will it take to get Detective Landry involved? Don’t miss taking notes on this murder!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I have read several of the Fiona Quinn Cozy Mysteries and they have been so very good, and Taking Notes on Murder is that same so very good! Fiona is always finding herself in the middle of a murder case, and this time someone is leaving notes on her desk in her kindergarten classroom. Could someone be so brave?

So the search is on and Fiona is trying to pull her now husband (shhhh nobody knows she’s married), Detective Nathan Landry into the case. Nathan really tries to keep Fiona from taking the case but it didn’t work so here both of them are with a case that’s re-opened and going strong, if they could just get some good clues. And I don’t want to give anything important away so I’ll stop at this. If you enjoy a good clean cozy mystery, you will be delighted to listen to this fun, interesting and enjoyable read.

This was an audiobook that I reviewed and I enjoyed the voice of Maren Swenson Waxenberg as she so expertly reads the narration. Waxenberg has the perfect voice for this cozy mystery. Her expressions and voice changes for the characters kept the interest in wanting to finish listening to this book. If you have been wanting to try an audio book, this is a great one to try. You will enjoy several hours of reading fun. I give Taking Notes on Murder Five Stars!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Christmas on Breakers Point is the first book introducing the new Independence Islands Series from Celebration Lit publishing. I had the honor of reading the book with it was first published, and now I am reviewing the Audiobook. I am just starting to listen to audiobooks, I enjoy them but I wouldn’t want this to be my only way of reading books. I did very much enjoy this one. Christa DelSorbo does a fabulous job of narrating this book. Her voice is easing to listen to and she reads in a way you can understand and enjoy.

Chautona Havig is a wonderful author and I love this story. While is isn’t the story I was expecting as a beginning of a series, with the sadness and emotions so tight, Havig does an amazing job of weaving it all together and creating an ending to carry on the series. If you are looking for a book to try as an audio book, I highly recommend this one. Audiobooks need stellar narrators, and Christa DelSorbo is just that!

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Book Title:  Finding Family in a Far-Away Land: An Adoption Story by Amanda Wall

Category:  Children’s Fiction (Ages 4-10),  44 pages

Genre:  Children’s Picture Book, Adoption

Publisher:  BookBaby

Release date:   March 29, 2021

Content Rating:  G for everyone.

Book Description:

Every adoption experience is uniquely different but the yearning to have unconditional family love is universal. Two Indian sisters, Priya and Ari, experience what it’s like to be adopted into a multi-cultural, interracial family. Walk alongside these two charming, dynamic girls as they journey through the adoption transition to a new country full of new experiences!

“Finding Family in a Far-Away Land” is a pensive and sometimes comical book that demonstrates how children can experience the same journey quite differently. A glossary of cultural terms is included so that all can learn and enjoy what Ari and Priya cherish about their Indian roots. This story is meant to be a resource to those hoping to learn about one family’s adoption experience― and may even help a child process their own adoption story. The intended audience for this book is children ages 4-10.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Finding Family in a Far-Away Land: An Adoption Story by Amanda Wall is such a precious book written about the author’s experience adopting two daughters from India. The story is told with Priya, the oldest day and her point of view. Priya was old enough to remember their life in with their parents and then in the orphanage after they lost their parents, so we get a little of India’s culture mixed in as well.

I enjoyed this story very much. I know of families that adopted children from other countries and always wanted to do that, but God didn’t have that for me. But I have always admired people willing to give children a home that otherwise may not have one. It was fun and interesting as the two cultures mixed and the issues with each side as they learned their new way of life. Author Amanda Wall does a very nice job writing and illustrating the story. The illustrations are a little bit different than a lot of children’s books, but yet they work well with telling the story. I love the front cover, I think it fits the story perfectly. This is a very well thought out and written book, and tells a story that needs to be in many families. I think it would be a good library book for schools as well. It would be an awesome resource when needing something to read to children who have been adopted, and because it is a true story I think I would be more meaningful. I highly recommend this sweet book and it is Four Stars for me.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Now join me for an interesting interview with author Amanda Wall

  1. How do you get into a good mode for writing?

Noise cancelling headphones are not just for the airplane! I have a busy household, so I make the most of real or induced quiet moments.  I hunker down in a room with natural light and get a relaxing music playlist going. Music, coffee, and salty peanuts are as essential to me as my computer.

  1. What are your favorite topics to write about?

Personal memories and experiences are my favorite topics because there is much emotion behind the words. I especially enjoy writing about my kids because their imaginations are active. They transport me back to being a kid again especially with their varying personalities. This past week I retasted Lucky Charms for the first time in 25 years. Still amazing! I hope to induce a relatability in my writing or provoke a thought. If a reader feels like they are there with me then I have done a proper job.

  1. There are many books out there about adoption. What makes yours different?

My children’s story about adoption is different because it is a true story and is told from the perspective of my daughter Priya. She was almost 5 once adopted and remembers moments in her life in India quite vividly. I chose to write about their experience in India, the moment we met, and the transition home because adoption doesn’t just begin once you get home.  Many children who have been internationally adopted can relate to Priya’s feelings and experience.

  1. You mentioned you enjoy traveling with your family. How has travel influenced your writing?

Travel has a way of heightening senses. You become more aware of your surroundings and those involved.  It also helps you see the world outside of yourself and your norms which is healthy. There is always something to learn from someone or a new culture. I think because I absorb travel experiences in a more present state of mind, I remember details in a deeper sense. Those memories translate well when writing because I can be more descriptive when describing the smells at a market or the emotion involved when wiggling toes in the sand or sharing a staring contest with a white-faced monkey.

  1. If there is one thing you want readers to remember about you, what would it be?

I am a reflective yet evolving human just like everyone else. Being a parent in a transracial adoption is a journey of learning, from my children and many credible resources, of how to be a more aware, educated parent every day!

Tour and Giveaway for A Lady in Attendance by Rachel Fordham

A Lady in Attendance

About the Book

Book:  A Lady in Attendance

Author: Rachel Fordham

Genre: ChristianHistorical

Release date: June 1, 2021

A Lady in Attendance-Book Cover

Will the Past Destroy Her Future?

Ada, Mi.—Rachel Fordham’s historical novels have received high praise for their warm and engaging story lines filled with romance, adventure, and happy endings. In A Lady in Attendance, Fordham beautifully blends these same great features in a novel about overcoming obstacles in the past to make room for a better future.

After spending the last five years in a New York state reformatory, Hazel is desperate to begin life anew, but she knows that a tarnished name could ruin her chances. She accepts a job as Doctor Gilbert Watts’ lady in attendance but does so under an alias so she can hide her shameful past.

Dr. Watts has come to enjoy the pleasant chatter of his new dental assistant, but he senses her sadness and wonders if there is more to her story than she’s shared with him. As their friendship deepens, Hazel must grapple with her desire to trust him.

Can Dr. Watts and Hazel’s friends help expunge her record? And can Hazel possibly find hope and love along the way?

About the Author

Fordham_Rachel1_MAINjpg

Rachel Fordham is the author of The Hope of Azure Springs, Yours Truly, Thomas, and A Life Once Dreamed. Fans expect stories with heart, and she delivers, diving deep into the human experience and tugging at reader emotions. She loves connecting with people, traveling to new places, and daydreaming about future projects that will have sigh-worthy endings and memorable characters. She is a busy mom, raising both biological and foster children (a cause she feels passionate about). She lives with her husband and children on an island in the state of Washington.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

When I first started this book, I didn’t realize what ‘A Lady in Attendance’ was all about. This is a fun, interesting historical read that I hated to see end. I kept going back re-reading parts just to prolong the story. Hazel was in a bit of trouble, and spent several years in a New York state reformatory, but she was innocent. But aside from this, she had to make her way in the world and find a job. She nailed one with a dentist, being his assistant, but not before she changed her name to cover her past issues. Will her past meet up with her before she can come clean and clear her name once and for all?

I loved this historical fiction. Author Rachel Fordham does and excellent job of creating beautiful characters that I grew to love. Hazel was a beautiful character inside and out and everyone loved her, and her personality made a nice change in the dentist office. And her name is adorable, but I could be bias since this is my new granddaughters name. It was difficult for Hazel to trust anyone, but finally she was able to trust a few people and tell her story and find help. Fordham does an amazing job with this story, the historical details show the deep research she does before writing the story and her writing is phenomenal. I can’t wait to read what Rachel Fordham has next for us, her readers. If you love historical fiction, with a bit of whodunit mystery, you will love this story. This one is a Five Star all the way for me.

More from Rachel

Ten behind the scenes extras from A Lady in Attendance:

  1. This book takes place in Amherst and Buffalo New York, places I lived for four years. Buffalo has had some rough years but if you ever visit the area you will see gorgeous old buildings, beautiful parks and cemeteries and understand why it was once a booming and prosperous city (and why I love it still). Gilbert and Hazel both grew up in the area (though, they did not know each other until the story begins). Two of my children were born in Buffalo and though they aren’t being raised there, I tell them stories.
  2. Hazel spent five years in a New York State reformatory. Reformatories were basically the first juvenile delinquent facilities (the ages of who could be sentenced there was different from today). Reformatories were a new idea. There were still a lot of people who believed in “bad blood” and that a criminal could never be anything but a criminal. There were some heroes who fought hard to convince the public, that people could change. Because of this book’s storyline, I could not go too deeply into this subject, but it is fascinating!
  3. Gilbert Watts is this book’s leading man. I gave up on being able to use the name Gilbert on one of my own kids and instead gave it to a character. I adore the name Gilbert and everything about this character, hope you do too!
  4. There is a joke at the end of the book about a graveyard (don’t worry, it’s not scary) and it’s a nod to my mom who used to use this joke on us every time we passed a cemetery. I really love sneaking in things into my stories that will make my kids, family and friends smile when they read it. I often think of my books as love letters from me to others and the best kind of love letters are personal.
  5. My husband is a dentist and as a result, we tend to notice dentist in media. They are often portrayed as villains or comic relief. I decided it would be my goal to write a romantic dentist that would change the image in readers minds.
  6. Gilbert tells Hazel that being a dentist is really being an artist. When my husband was first trying to decide on a career path, he shadowed a dentist. He didn’t really think it would be for him, but he was open to exploring options. He came home and told me that the cool thing about dentistry was that you were essentially making art that was functional, every day. Little sculptures that helped people eat and smile better. Gilbert from the book is very different from my husband, but it was fun sneaking in little pieces of him in there.
  7. One of my favorite scenes from this book take place at a corn husking. There is a tradition that says, if a red ear of corn is found, the finder gets a kiss. Sigh, I love that scene!
  8. Without always meaning to, my books end up having messages woven into them. I believe one of the messages in A Lady in Attendance is forgiveness. In this case, it’s forgiving of one’s self. I believe this message is one that we all need at some point in our lives (or many points!).
  9. My books are coming out in a different order than they were written in. I actually wrote this book before Yours Truly, Thomas and after A Life Once Dreamed. This story has been waiting a long time to be in print! During that time, it has been reshaped in little ways. It gained a prologue and lost an epilogue, it was tamed down in places and intensified in others, but the heart of it has always been the same!
  10. One last piece of A Lady in Attendance trivia—several of my books have had their titles changed. It’s part of the writing process. The books get a working title and later a title that the rest of the world knows it by. The Hope of Azure Springs was originally just Azure SpringsYours Truly, Thomas was originally Dear, Azure SpringsA Life Once Dreamed was originally The Belle of PenanceA Lady in Attendance began as A Lady in Attendance and stayed A Lady in Attendance. Not only is this title fitting because dental assistants were knowns by this or as an attending lady, but also because Hazel wrestles with her worth. In a society that believes a mistake made once can leave a mark forever, it takes the right eyes and open heart to realize that there truly is a lady in attendance.

Tour and Giveaway for I Miss School by Ryan Reaves

Join us for this tour from July 6 to July 26, 2021!

Book Details:

Book Title:  I Miss School by Ryan Reaves

Category:  Children’s Non-Fiction (Ages 3-7),  24 pages

Genre:  Children’s Picture Book

Publisher:  Dawn Reaves

Release date:   Feb 2021

Content Rating:  G for everyone.

Book Description:

“I Miss School” is written by a child, for a child. In this heartwarming and honest story, kids will understand that their feelings about the pandemic are normal and it is perfectly acceptable to feel a range of emotions related to not going to in-person school. The book instills hope for kids that brighter days are ahead.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I Miss School by Ryan Reaves is an adorable book by an adorable six year old little girl. It’s more of the thoughts the little girl missing school. The cute and vibrant colors of the illustrations tell the story along with a bubble in the middle of the illustrations with a little girl’s thoughts on her wishes to return to school after a long pandemic cause by a deadly virus. Children everywhere can relate to the feelings of this child, because so many children had the same feelings while they were at home. As the world heals and the restrictions are lifted, this little book can be a reminder of what we faced during that difficult time. This is a good book to have on hand to encourage children to strive to learn even more now that they are back in the classrooms, and it will be a great reminder of 2019 and 2020 and what the country faced. This one is four stars for me.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Now join me for this interview with the author with the help of her mother.

Do you have another profession besides writing?

School! I go to school silly. But I also love to dance. I dance on my own, I was a member of my school, Ivy Hill Prep, theater dance club, and I dance every Saturday with Jamel Gaines Creative Outlet.

Favorite travel spot?

Mexico. We can get there fast and there’s a beach. Beaches are the best even though my mom hates the sand in my hair. I think I will live on the beach when I’m older.

In today’s tech-savvy world, most writers use a computer or laptop. Have you ever written parts of your book on paper?

I wrote I Miss School on the computer. A lot of people gave me notebooks and journals to use to write my next book. I started writing in the notebooks and drawing my thoughts in them. Then I type everything on the computer. I’m using the computer to change things around now so they sound better or make more sense.

Do you snack while writing?

Yes! I love chips. BBQ and the blue Doritos are my favorites! I make a lot of crumbs that I have to clean up but who cares. They taste the best!

What is your next project?

Well, it’s a story about being a princess and how it’s not just tutus and tiaras. I’m having fun writing it and my mommy is teaching me how to type fancy too!

What’s the funniest thing that ever happened to you?

My mom and dad don’t think this is funny but when I was 1, I was running down the street trying to get away from my mom and being silly. I tripped and fell and rolled forward over my head and did a headstand for a little bit in slow motion. I scraped my face bad but the way my mom tells the story, I can’t stop laughing at how I rolled. How do your feet just stick in the air while you stand on your head? I was just 1 year old… man that’s funny to me lol.
