MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I was so excites to have the honor to read another Pepper Basham book, and this one did not disappoint. This book takes readers back close to where Basham grew up when Cora Taylor travels from England to these Mountains to find her brother, after her father planned her marriage to a man she certainly would never marry. She soon meets Jeb McAdams, a man that has a past of not so good baggage, but the two have an interesting relationship.  

I love, love, love this story. Pepper Basham has a way of writing that draws you into her stories and you just can’t leave. I love that she writes her home town in the Blue Ridge Mountains, as well as her family as inspirations for her stories. I have a soft spot in my heart for the Blue Ridge Mountains and along the Blue Ridge Parkway because it is close to where I live, and we have made many, many trips down the Parkway, stopping along the way, getting to know the people. This makes this book so much fun. I really appreciate the cast of characters and the way they grow and develop along the way. I felt I was right there in the story with them, and I Love’s that! Basham deals with some tough issues in Jeb and Cora’s story, and she handles these issues like the professional she is. Readers are sure to see the love, forgiveness and redemption through Jesus in this story, but never fear, it is written in such a subtle way its fits well as part of the story. I Always love they way Basham weaves the faith and the Christian life into the lives of her characters.

If you love a good historical fiction that is post WWI, you will love this one I am more that happy to give The Heart of the Mountains by Pepper Basham Five Stars!

It’s so interesting how one idea can influence an entire series, or…how one person’s story can.

The idea for The Heart of the Mountains started in Laurel’s Dream with a hint of a family history story about a girl named Kizzie. (Someday, I hope to bring Kizzie’s story to the pages of a book). From there, the idea began to grow out of a love for my Appalachian culture into a series of books which highlighted (and fictionalized) stories from my family history.

The main story in The Heart of the Mountains is about Jeb and Cora, two different people with similar servant hearts, but the secondary story that touched me so much was the one based on my great grandfather’s life. I write about it in the Author’s Note at the end of the novel, so I won’t go into detail about it. However, what I loved getting to do is bring the truth of God’s redemption in my great grandfather’s life…to life again.

I never knew “Papa Rat”. I only knew the stories handed down to me by my granny and my mama, but in writing this story, I feel as though I had a tiny opportunity to “meet” him in these pages. He was a gruff mountain man with a broken past which led him to make a whole lot of broken choices, but his story is incredibly encouraging, because it points to the God of broken people. My great grandpa wasn’t left in his brokenness, but, after years of running away from God, he would later recount that God pursued him. The beauty of Sam McAdams’ journey in The Heart of the Mountains is only a little glimpse into what I imagine my great grandpa’s redemption story looked like.

Because my great grandpa was forever changed when Jesus saved him (as any of us should be).

I think that’s what my granny and her siblings (and even “Papa Rat” himself) would want most -that his story would point to Jesus. I hope that’s what you see when you read about Sam McAdams in The Heart of the Mountains.

I love Pepper Basham’s books and this is one of my favorites. The split timeliness from 1915 was interesting as well as The Biltmore Estates settings. I love the beautiful Biltmore and love it even more that this story shines a historical light on not only the beauty of the estate, but the beauty of life within the home. Sadie was only a helper, a servant, but boy did she leave a lasting story behind for those who would find and know her beautiful story decades later.

Ms. Basham does such an amazing job with researching her story and creating characters that tell the story so perfectly. I loved reading every single page of this book. And I can’t wait to read what’s next from Pepper Basham. This one is a Five Star for me, I wish I could give it more!

Books are a uniquely portable magic – Stephen King

Appalachia is known for having a high illiteracy rate. A place of beautiful scenery and rugged landscapes, the people of the mountains developed stories through oral storytelling much more than “book learning”.  As a young girl growing up in this world, I loved hearing my granny share tales from up to five generations ago, filling in the narrative gaps between a birth date and a death date on a tombstone – giving flesh and breath to the stone-etched names.

It’s no surprise then, with a heart cultivated from rich oral stories, I fell in love with reading. Books became that “portable magic” that took me places my little Appalachian community couldn’t provide. I fell in love with the Boxcar Children and Nancy Drew. Wept through the end of Bridge to Terabithia and Old Yeller. Traveled to the plains with Sarah Plain and Tall and fell in love with horses with The Black Stallion. But when I was in seventh grade, I read my very first “British” novel, The Secret Garden. In that one introduction, my world expanded into mysterious English manor houses and British classics. Before long, I’d consumed Jane Eyre, Austen’s classics, some Dickens, Dracula, Frankenstein…and the list goes on! And then…I found Tolkien and Lewis – and the ‘real’ world swelled into OTHER worlds.

I’m grateful for true stories of book-loving pioneers traveling into the world of Appalachia to provide books and literacy training to “my people”, because I know some of those books made their way to my tiny elementary school library…and not only brought me the chance to discover stories, but to write them too!

Isn’t it amazing how books can do that?

In Hope Between the Pages, I wanted to bring the same awe and discovery I felt as a child (and continue to feel as an adult reader) to the story of two people whose words had seemed small. Stories stretched their worlds, but the stories also gave them wonderful imaginations and positive perspectives. It’s still amazing to me that ink-and-paper words can make such a lasting impact on hearts and minds. They can lead us to dream, teach us new things, encourage our hearts, help us to think outside the box, swell our imaginations, broaden our horizons, and encourage our hope.

Books are not a replacement for real adventures and relationships, but they certainly provide a beautiful “door” into other lives and worlds that we may never have a chance to experience in real life. Sadie, my historical heroine, and Clara, my contemporary heroine, both have kept close to home but traveled greatly through books…and BOTH are given the opportunity to reach beyond the bindings to discover real-life adventures. I’d like to think that their love for stories helped them have the courage to step away from the page and into their own tales even more prepared than they would have been without stories.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

I really enjoyed The Thorn Keeper! Catherine is desperately trying to overcome her past and is trying to live the life that God wants her to live. And Dr. David Ross is just the person who wants to help her with that. But can this relationship work, with David’s life so different than Catherine’s.

Pepper Basham has created the perfect cast of characters to tell this wonderful story of love, forgiveness and second chances. And Catherine’s story is told so beautifully, I wanted to be there with all of the characters as the story was told. I love the historical setting. Ms. Basham does an amazing job of researching the setting of the story, and I love each detailed scene written so beautifully. Catherine has a lot of doubts, especially with David, she thinks she is just not good enough for him, but I Pepper does and really nice job of weaving everything together to show how faith  in God changes a person.

I didn’t read the first book in this series, but the author did a really good job from the beginning introducing readers to Catherine, as well as enough information about her past life that it is ok read as a standalone. Though I do plan to read the first book as well soon.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

Emma Mitchell was so busy trying to find a match for everyone else,  she didn’t think about needing the man of her dreams. And her long time friend Jon Noble just surprised everyone by moving back to Randsom, so she can resume her friends relationship with him. But their journey doesn’t exactly as planned.

Thought this book started out a little slow for me, but then the story gets better and better. I really like Emma’s character,  she just so full of life and enjoys helping others. And her matchmaking skills are really, good, that is until she made a mess of one couple. And Jon is a sweetheart! But I did get annoyed at him for being so secretive sometimes. But that all said, Pepper Basham does an awesome job of writing this book to make people keep reading it until it end. She deals with several different issues that are realistic, describing each scene so vividly it seems like reading about my neighbors. There are a lot of characters in this small town of Randsom, and the way the  author introduces them to the story, they are easy to remember and soon felt like old friends. There is a lot of love in Randsom, but theres sometimes a lot of tensions flying around sometimes too. And all in all, it is a great third book in the Mitchell’s Crossrodes Series, and even though I didn’t read the first two stories, this one was fine for me as a stand alone. This is a good clean read. If this is what you like to read, it’s an awesome story.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

Wow, author Pepper Basham does it again in her book Charming the Troublemaker.  Another classy but sassy contemporary romance that will curl your toenails, yet Ms. Basham has a way of writing that gives readers a most clean and enjoyable read! This story has two main characters, Alex and Rainy. Alex, ever the charmer and big flirt, has issues of his own, but is unwilling to tell. Rainy is loveable, loyal and deeply loves her family and friends. And then there is Mama Mitchell. I absolutely fell in love with this lady and her sweet personality. And her wisdom was not only good for the Alex and Rainy , it is good for any of us today! Reading this book a second time is a must for me so I can really get a full grip of these amazing characters as well as their supporting characters and everything else in this wonderful book. A read has made sure the characters knows the Love of Jesus. I love and appreciate the way Ms. Basham weaves the Christian life into her characters in this exciting romance with a touch of suspense added in!

I have a thing for underdogs.

Misfits.

Lots souls who desperately need to find where they belong.

I can’t help it! Call it a ‘fix-it’ mentality or an awareness that God rescued me and now I want to rescue other people…even fictional characters, but I’m definitely a softy for those characters that people are less likely to root for. Catherine from The Thorn Bearer/Keeper became my first rescue…and I just HAD to find another.

I guess that’s how Charming the Troublemaker came into existence.

Dr. Alex Murdock desperately needed to be rescued.

In a bad way.

If you’ve had a chance to read my first book in the Mitchell’s Crossroads series, A Twist of Faith, you’ll know that Alex doesn’t seem to be made up of much hero material. He’s a flirt, a little arrogant, and…well, kind of like a lost puppy.

As book 1 grew and came to a close, I knew Alex and Rainey’s story would be next…but I immediately ran into a real problem.

Who in the world was Alex Murdock? We really didn’t get to know him very much in book 1. He zoomed in a few times, ruffling feathers and then finally showing off some interesting kindness/compassion in the end, but…he was still a big-time flirt.

So the question emerged: Can a flirt be a hero?

What is Alex hiding behind that ready smile and sense of humor? Why does he seem so lost?

The answers were surprising!! Just wait.

The Mitchell family draw him right in, as they did with Dee, and his world is forever changed.

And then there’s Rainey. Strong-willed and independent, she is deeply wounded by her ex-husband’s betrayal. Though she gives off all these ‘confident’ vibes, she hides her insecurities behind a tough exterior in a desire to keep people at a distance – well, everyone except her family.

Alex rocks her world with his ready charm.

And she sees beyond the plastic grin to recognize another wounded soul.

Throwing them together into a book has been a hilarious and heart-stirring adventure, I wasn’t prepared to encounter. They’re so much fun!

AND…he’s ADORKABLE!! Seriously!! He is SUCH a dork, but makes me grin. And…he looks like Armie Hammer 😉

My Thoughts On This Book

 Oh my, what a read! Eisley is a single mom living in the Appalachian Mountains with certainty no thoughts of romance. Wes is a British movie star that’s been staying with his parents for a while trying to get his life back together, and romance is the last thing on his mind. But totally unbeknown to these two, they have family with great matchmaking skills and thus the story begins!

Little did Eisley know that when she takes a trip across the pond to do some family research for her uncle, that her life would change forever. And from the scene at the airport with Eisley and Wes’s dad, I laughed and I cried throughout the rest of the book! All of the characters are so well thought out and created. I loved each family, they both so sweetly pulled me into their homes and lives. I will have to say, Wes was sure tested as he met Eisley’s family, I totally respect him for that!

If you are looking for a fun, hilarious read, with Bible principles and quotes that are sure to help you in your everyday life. I highly recommend Just The Way You Are. This book has me looking for more Pepper Basham books to read. I plan to read this one again in the near future because this is one of those books that you just can’t get the whole gist of the story in one read!!

Thank you so much for featuring my newest novel, Just the Way You Are, on CelebrateLit. I am THRILLED to be a part of this and to share a story that is very dear to my heart.

Just the Way You Are is my first ‘true’ Britallachian romantic comedy. Even though I’ve written comedy in some of my other novels and included elements of both Appalachia and Britain, this one embodies the tag #britallachian to the core. For those of you who’ve read some of my previous books, you know I’m a big fan of my native Blue Ridge Mountains and the Appalachian culture. You may also know that I’m a proud Anglophile.

Those two loves met in Just the Way You Are – and I tossed lots of other things I love best into the mix. What are those ingredients, you might ask?

Well, let me just tell ya! Just the Way You Are is a blend of Blue Ridge Mountains, Appalachian culture, big (hilarious) family dynamics, matchmaking, Britain, a swoony English hero, a quirky, magnanimous heroine, a bunch of adorable kids, Scooby Doo and Indiana Jones references, lots of humor, a historical mystery, a devious villainess, stately manor houses, secret rooms, love letters, and matchmaking all rolled into one…oh, and did I mention brain-numbing romance?

(Did anyone else feel the need to add “fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, miracles, true love….” From the Princess Bride?) I don’t think I included torture, giants, or monsters in Just the Way You Are…but I may have the other elements in this novel.

Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating about the brain-numbing, but I do have a tendency to err on the side of overly dramatic.

Within the pages of Just the Way You Are, you’ll meet people from my own family, people from my imagination, and some people who stepped into the story without one ounce of my planning to ever meet them. This story came out of my desire to write something I love reading – spicy romance, clean humor, culture clashes, the big love of family, and redemption.

How did my heroine Eisley Barrett evolve? Out of thin air. I was washing dishes one afternoon and staring out the window into our small backyard with the Blue Ridge Mountains painting a purplish-blue frame on the horizon when I closed my eyes. Into my imagination came this ginger-headed woman walking through Heathrow International Airport pulling a hot pink bag behind her…and then, she tripped and fell. That was it. That’s how I was introduced to my insecure, hilarious, romance-loving, single-mom heroine.

And the dashing hero? Okay, this may sound ridiculous, but I was watching an interview about Richard Armitage (Thoron Oakenshield, Guy of Gisborne, etc) regarding his lovely costume drama North and South where he plays a very dashing British hero. Anyway, he was SUCH a gentleman to watch during the interview. So polite. Kind. Funny, in a sweet way, and then, out of the blue, he said the word ‘gosh’. I know, that may not be a big deal to anyone but me, but after watching celebrity interviews where every other word needed a censor, the very fact that this elegant man used the word ‘gosh’, sent my writing brain into motion. My first internal question? What if a movie star with a tender heart had been burned by the pretension and expectation of celebrity status? What kind of woman could touch a heart who’d lost his faith in love’s authenticity?

Enter my red-head single-mom toting her pink bag through Heathrow and you have the very beginning of Just the Way You Are – a story of forgiveness, second chances…and a little bit of movie magic.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

This is my first book by Pepper Basham, and WOW! It was wonderful! When I started this book, I could not put it down! The characters were so well developed, the plot was written in an amazing way to keep me interested!! I am so glad to have a new author to follow, and I will be looking for more Pepper Basham books!
