MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I have certainly enjoyed reading the first five books in the Gone to the Dogs Mystery Series. Today’s dog is a retired military working dog and his breed is Belgian Malinois. I’ve never heard of this breed so I looked him up. They are stubborn, yet friendly and alert, hardworking and confident. I can see why these are trained for military. It’s a beautiful dog. When tornado hits, a Belgian Malinois is seen several places around town where explosions are seen. Air Force veteran Dr. Lane Bishop and Nora Hernandez strikes out to find out who is behind these horrific issues.

I enjoyed Lane and Nora and their inneraction as they looked for the culprit. Even though their relationship was put on hold, you can tell their love for each other. Nota found more than she wanted to know about the strange dog and who it belonged to, but she is glad the person is found doing the harm. I love these characters, as well as the animals. We are animal lovers so I always enjoy a good book that animals have major parts. If you love a good sweet clean read that includes fur babies, this is a good book for you to read. I highly recommend this one. I am giving New Leash on Life Five Stars.

You’ve most likely seen military working dogs (MWDs) on television shows or in the news. Maybe you’ve seen police dogs in action or read about them. They’re often fierce looking and always well-trained and intelligent. Along with their handler, the MWD is a brave and not so secret weapon in the military and law enforcement world. And did you know that an MWD always outranks his or her handler? It’s true.

I was very aware of all of this, but I had no idea what happened to these dogs when they were too old or perhaps physically unable to continue in their roles. People retire from their careers, so it makes sense that MWDs would as well.

I first learned about retired MWDs from watching my friend Ronie welcome a gorgeous Belgian Malinois, Vvolt, to her family. Anyone who knew the family or came to know Vvolt through social media fell in love with that dog. With his ears cocked just so and his bigger-than-life personality, I knew I had to write about him someday.

When I was given the opportunity to co-write a cozy mystery series with my dear friend, Janice Thompson, I knew one of those books would have to include an MWD. Because MWDs are used in so many situations, from military police work to bomb sniffing to PTSD care and more—I had to narrow down the choice of what my dog would be doing. I won’t give anything away, but I can tell you that Pal, the fictional Belgian Malinois in NEW LEASH ON LIFE is very good at what he does. He also loves a good Whataburger when his regular kibble isn’t available, but I digress.

When I set out to create the personality for Pal, I looked to what I knew and loved about Vvolt. Big personality, toothy grin, and the ability to run and jump like a champ were all included in my dog’s version of the MWD. And like Vvolt, my MWD develops a strong bond with his handler and the family who welcomes him into their home. Pal is loyal, friendly, and apt to stand between his people and danger at the slightest provocation.

Pal’s person in NEW LEASH ON LIFE is Dr. Lane Bishop, a Texas A&M University research veterinarian and Air Force veteran. Lane deals with nightmares that came out of his military experiences. As you can imagine, this causes an issue or two with Nora Hernandez, the woman Lane adores but has not shared his worries with.

Then along comes Pal, a stray (or is he?) with a habit of disappearing and then turning up at the most unlikely places just when he’s needed. I won’t give away the story, but let’s just say that sometimes it takes an animal to show the humans what needs to be done.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

Of Rags and Riches is a collection of none novellas from nine amazing authors. Set in the mid to late 1800’s, each story is of poverty as well as luxury during this Guilded Age in our history. My review focuses on the first story in this book, Jennifer Uhlarik’s Union Pacific Princess. And as I read each of the other stories, each one is so well written, going a little deeper than a lot if the novellas I have read. This Of Rags and Riches is truly one of the best books in the Barbour Publishers Collections I have read…..

In Union Pacific Princess, Dara is headed to the Dakota Territory to see her father, who is working to get the railroad through the territory. This is definitely not the life she is use to living in Boston, but when Gage injures himself while protecting Dara and her cousin Becca, Dara is determined to help him until his injuries are healed. However, this does not sit well with Gage, since he is in the Dakota Territory to stop the railroad Dara’s dad is trying to build. This is not sounding too good for Gage!

I love Dara. She is sweet and caring, but her father, his attitude did much to hurt Dara even more. But Dara could stand her own very well, and her feisty attitude proved it more than once! Author Jennifer Uhlarik does a really nice job of creating characters and writing them into her story on a way we all can love. I love how she writes so many different angles to this story, then weaves them all together in the end. If you love historical fiction, especially Christian and clean reads, you will love this story. And you will love all of the other Stories in the Of Rags and Riches Romance Collections from Barbour Publishers!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Each of these stories are centered around a precious Cameo given to Letitia Newton by Queen Victoria in 1851. At the time, Letitia thought herself an old maid,  but her mind changed quickly when she fell in love just after the Cameo was given to her. Letitia believes the Cameo is the reason she found her true love, so she wants to share it with others.

Each of the stories were written in a setting with many years between each of them. The Cameo would go to three more people in Letitia’s future family. But it was not always an easy task finding that person. Each story takes readers on an interesting journey to find just the right person for this Cameo!

I really enjoyed this book. With four different stories, I was able to read each one at one setting. The characters created to tell each story were wonderful, and developed so well throughout each of the four stories. It’s hard to pick a favorite, though I did love the one featuring the Pinkerton Agent, because I love any story with Pinkerton Agent’s involved. But they are all such great stories that you don’t want to miss a one if them. So I encourage you to pick up a copy of this book and read for yourself. It will give you many hours of enjoyment.

I really liked and enjoyed this story. I fell in love with the two children, Maribel and William that were on the ship. Two very intelligent kids that were more than able to take care of themselves.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I have really come to enjoy Kathleen Y’Barbo’s books. I enjoy her writing style, and the fact that she writes historical fiction so well. I really like Millie and the strong character that she played, as well as the other characters so well created. This is the second book in this series, so I think it is better reading the first book, at least for me it was a lot easier knowing the background, story and characters from book one.
