MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

I really enjoyed getting to know Justin and Melody and all of the other characters in Brunch at Bittersweet Cafe. I didn’t expect to like this series so well, but the stories are different than what I’ve ever read and it was a sure delight reading this story, as well as the first in this series. Melody’s love for baking soon found her with her own restaurant. But without the guy she was in love with. Justin was fulfilling a duty to his sister and brother in law.

I’ve only read a few books by Carla Laureano, and I’ve found she’s an excellent writer. I enjoyed the way this story flows, keeping my interest until the last page. I grew to love the realistic characters, especially with Melody and Justin. And the strong sense of making the right decisions, and letting God guide your life was woven within the lives of the characters. This isn’t a fantastic read folks, check this one out!

“Confessions of An Erstwhile Baker”

 

Like most females, baking is encoded somewhere deep down in my DNA. Call it nature or call it nurture, but at the earliest age, I figured out that the cute boy in my English class would talk to me if it involved chocolate chip cookies. Got my heart broken or had a friend betray me? I grabbed the mixing bowl and went for the brownies (even better if they’re served à la mode.) My friend was having a birthday? I made a cake drowned in pounds of buttercream.

I quickly graduated from the boxed mixes to the real thing when I got married and had a kitchen large enough to roll out dough. I would comb magazines for the best recipes and spend my weekends trying them out. I quickly became known for bringing beautifully iced Christmas cookies and delicious homemade cakes to work.

Then my husband and I moved our young family from Los Angeles to Denver, a relocation that was about 1000 miles northeast and 5000 feet up. Suddenly, every recipe I’d perfected in the previous eight years failed. Cookies burned to crisps, cakes fell, and don’t get me started on candy making. Gradually, I adapted my recipes (my beloved never-fail Toll House recipe took eight tries to get right) and even became an avid artisan bread-baker.

Then disaster. Or at least, what a baker would consider a disaster. After developing chronic health problems, I discovered that among other things, I was sensitive to gluten. The horror! In order to heal, I turned to the paleo diet, which eliminates all grains (there goes most gluten free recipes) and all processed sugars (there goes everything else). I’ve tried baking paleo-style, and while I can now make cakes that even my gluten-fiend family enjoy, it’s just not the same.

So what’s a once-obsessive baker do when she can’t eat her creations? She bakes for other people and goes on faith that they actually taste good… considering she can’t taste them herself.

It struck me that there was a spiritual lesson in that, and an obvious tie to Brunch at Bittersweet Café, which deals in large part with Melody’s faith journey. There are times when we have no idea if things are working out the way they’re supposed to, in which case we just have to trust the “recipe” and the input of friends and family who love us. Sometimes our instincts tell us when we’re off track, and sometimes we need that outside nudge from our “taste-testers” to put us back on course.

In any case, what Melody and I have in common is that we both bake to show our love for the people around us. And the process of baking my favorites, even knowing that I can’t enjoy them myself, can still be a selfless way to show people they’re important to me.

Fortunately, macarons, which happen to be made with almond flour, are still on the menu.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK 

I never though a book based on food would be so fantastic to read, but Carla Laureano‘s “The Saturday Night Supper Club” sure fooled me! I was totally hooked on this book after the first chapter. Denver chef Rachel Bishop has accomplished everything she’s dreamed, owning her own restaurant, even winning awards as a chef. Life was everything she wanted until an editorial went viral, written buy someone who didn’t mean for it to happen. But once viral, that was it, and Rachel’s life as a chef was ruined. What Rachel didn’t realize is the Essayist who wrote the article would be so nice, nice and caring enough to apologize and try to fix things for her. Alex Kanin was just that kind of person, and was willing to do whoever possible to help Rachel have her career back.

I immediately liked Rachel and Alex. Their characters were solid, and I could easily relate to them. In a corporate world, people like Alex are not easy to find, and it was enjoyable reading this book with such a character. And even though Rachel had made her way to the top chef position, her struggles are still those that many face in everyday life. And Ms. Laureano has a really wonderful way of describing their lives and former lives in detail that I could easily understand! And I was in awe of her vivid descriptions of each food dish she made. Of course me not being familiar with all of the expensive dishes, made me even more interested in each dish Rachel made. I was clearly given an insite into a world of menus and restaurant life I’ve never known. And I also loved that Alex was so willing to be Rachel’s taster of the new foods she tried so hard to master for their Supper Clubs. I could definitely not be that person because my food taste doesn’t spread that wide. Alex and Rachel are characters that most everyone loves, at least I do! The romance part of the story was interesting, keeping everyone wondering just if and how it would all work out.

Overall, this was such a fun and entertaining book to read. One I hope you will enjoy just as much as I did. If you are looking for a clean, interesting (because I found the food part very interesting) and entertaining read, this is a book you definitely want to check out. It will not disappoint!

I’ve got a confession to make: I have a cooking problem.

It started early and innocently enough, flipping through my mom’s cookbooks and marking things I wanted to try. Making cakes and muffins from a mix. Flipping frozen steak patties. Doctoring canned spaghetti sauce.

It wasn’t long before I got into the hard stuff: muffins from scratch, slow-cooked marinara, cast-iron seared and oven-finished rib eyes. Over the years, I tried to kick the habit numerous times, but every time things got tough, I found myself falling off the wagon and heading back into the kitchen. Even hosting dinner parties. Yes, dear reader, I pulled my hapless friends into my madness. To my shame, I even got some of them hooked with their own addiction.

Before I knew it, my obsessions started creeping into my day job. No longer was it enough to write contemporary romance about normal people who order take-out. No, I had to write chefs and passionate home cooks and describe the food in the books just as lovingly as I did a first kiss. And then the final straw—a book series centered entirely on food and the culinary profession, beginning with The Saturday Night Supper Club.

All joking aside, cooking really is an addiction that I haven’t been able to kick. As a writer, I spend hours locked in my own imagination, creating things out of words and ideas. And while it’s immensely fulfilling, it’s a long, painstaking process that takes months, even years, before I can release the final product into the world. While there’s a large amount of planning and analysis involved in creating a book, the work is still mostly in my head.

Which is why I find cooking to be such a relaxing creative pursuit. Dicing a pile of vegetables into perfectly uniform cubes may take the same concentration and precision, but it’s concrete and measurable. It becomes a personal challenge to do something better than last time, improving by tiny, nearly imperceptible increments. It’s the closest to meditation that my always-on brain ever experiences, clear of all thought except for my activity at the present moment.

And yet, simultaneously, food is ephemeral. Mistakes last only as long as it takes to eat them or toss them directly into the trash can, depending on the nature of the mistake. If a sauce breaks, I toss it and start over. If I burn something, I either cut off the burned part or I order takeout and try again the next day. There’s an element of experimentation and instinct and whimsy that isn’t hampered by the pursuit of perfection. Let’s face it, a mediocre chocolate chip cookie beats a perfect celery stick any day of the week.

It was natural, then, to write a chef heroine who had dedicated her entire life to the pursuit of culinary perfection and explore all the ways that food makes our lives and relationships richer. How it anchors our memories. How we nurture others by feeding them. How a simple meal becomes meaningful not because of the food, but because of the connections we form with others over the dinner table.

In the end, I guess my cooking problem isn’t that much of a problem after all. If you need me, I’ll be in the kitchen.

I studied literature and criticism at Pepperdine University and earned a degree in English in 1997. Since then, I’ve worked in a number of different industries as a salesperson, marketing manager, copywriter, and small business consultant. In addition to my work for corporate clients, I wrote for publications produced by the World Health Organization.

I love the history, culture, and mythology of Ireland and Scotland, which form the settings for most of my work. I also enjoy incorporating my background in martial arts and fencing into the action elements of my stories.

I’m a member of American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) and Romance Writers of America (RWA). I was selected as a finalist in ACFW’s 2012 Genesis contest in the speculative fiction category. My debut novel, a contemporary romance entitled Five Days in Skye, was released by David C Cook in June 2013 and went on to win RWA’s 2014 RITA Award for Inspirational Romance. My three book young adult fantasy series, SONG OF SEARE, is being released from NavPress in 2014 and 2015.

I live with my husband and two sons in Denver, Colorado.
