Pound Foolish | Book Four in the Windy City Neighbors series (Castle Rock Creative, October 2014)

Greg Singer coordinates consumer sports shows for powerboats, four wheelers, snowmobiles, and jet skis-macho toys for outdoor men like himself. But the job puts tremendous stress on his marriage with Nicole, who for the first time notices the handsome lawyer at the end of the block. “Greener pastures?” When the recession hits Greg’s industry, he thinks the crisis is merely an opportunity for God to bless him with unmatched prosperity, a promise he hears preached each Sunday, and he steps out in bold faith . . . But is he being “pound foolish”?

The fourth in the Windy City Neighbors series, Pound Foolish explores the economic upheaval and uncertainties challenging every family. Intersecting with Penny Wise (book three), the Jacksons employ the innovating storytelling technique of “parallel novels.” Though each book follows its own drama and story arc, the characters’ lives become intertwined and affect one another. Pound Foolish returns us to Beecham Street-a typical American neighborhood . . . where a growing friendship brings new meaning to prosperity.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I hadn’t read any of Dave and Neta Jackson’s books until I started the Wendy City Neighbors Series, and the more I read from these two, the more my love grows for their writing. In Pound Foolish they deal with real like characters in real life situations, and at times it is impossible to put the book down, because you wanna see where it is going next. Greg could get on your nerves if you let him, in the really questionable decisions he was making, his marriage wasn’t getting along so good, and he was just, well,  foolish. As I kept reading, I realized how much this couple’s struggles were like some of my own, and I am sure a lot of people can say the same thing. It was interesting to see how God worked in their lives, despite their struggles and wrong decisions. I always enjoy reading books like this because they are so encouraging, and you will sure find Pound Foolish a super encouraging book to read.

Penny WisePenny Wise | A Windy City Neighbors bookMichelle Jasper doesn’t have much time to hang out with her neighbors—not with thirteen-year-old twins, another teen with hoop dreams, a full-time job as a caseworker, volunteering at a crisis pregnancy center, and heading up the women’s ministry at Northside Baptist. Her husband’s constantly changing shifts as an air traffic controller at the world’s busiest airport—Chicago’s O’Hare International—and responsibilities as a trusted deacon at Northside only add to the juggling act at the Jasper household. Her new neighbors, Harry and Estelle Bentley, mean well with their friendly efforts to bring people together, but how can she deal with neighborhood concerns—like Greg Singer, who lost his job and is now trying to recruit sales reps from the neighborhood for his new venture—when she’s confronted with tragic family situations daily in her job? Like little Candy and her baby brother Pookey, victims of neglect . . .

With the “tyranny of the urgent” crowding out the important, Michelle is blindsided by danger involving her own kids—and a personal crisis that calls into question the very values she holds dear. How could this happen? Does God even care?

 MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

In Penny Wise, we are back in the lovely neighborhood of Beecham Street and their interesting neighbors. We have visited some of the neighbors in the first two book, and this time we visit the Jasper family as they go about their every day live. This family is no different than families today, with three busy and active teenagers, and a husband and wife with a schedule that doesn’t leave a lot of extra time for family. I think I enjoyed this book a lot because it reflects modern day families and how they struggle daily to balance their life. The Jasper family surely had their share of difficulties and problems, and some of the craziest schedules anyone could have. And I love the way the Jackson team writes this story in a way that definitely keeps your attention. I couldn’t seem to put the book down for long because I just had to find out what was happening to these neat family members.

I love Neta and Dave Jackson’s book because they are good clean, enjoyable and interesting books written in the setting of a really nice neighborhood. Penny Wise is a a book that anyone can enjoy and one I highly recommend. I hope you will give this book a try, and I hope you like it as much as I do. As a husband/wife writing team, we are enthusiastic about books, kids, walking with God, gospel music, and each other! Together we are the authors or coauthors of over 120 books. (You can see our Publication Record by clicking HERE.) In addition to writing several books about Christian community, we have been privileged to coauthor numerous books with expert resource people on a variety of topics from racial reconciliation to medical ethics to ministry to kids in gangs.

But over the years the we have especially enjoyed writing for children and young people! This includes our award-winning TRAILBLAZER series, historical fiction about great Christian heroes and heroines for young people ages 8-12, and the four-volume HERO TALES: A Family Treasury of True Stories from the Lives of Great Christians, and the companion book, Heroes in Black History.

Somewhere along the way, our own children grew up! Son Julian is Director of Experience Design for the Alder Planetarium in Chicago where he “provides the experience of exploring space” for visitors. He has two sons, Liam Isaac and Elijah David. Daughter Rachel graduated from Eastern Mennonite University and after working in the field of rape-crisis prevention went on to earn a Masters Degree in counseling from the University of Illinois. She is now a counselor at “Uni High School” in Champaign, Illinois. She is the loving mother of Havah Noelle (our first grandchild!) and Noah Zion, our youngest grandchild. The Jackson family also includes a Cambodian foster daughter, Samen Sang, who has four children.

We live in Evanston, Illinois, where for twenty-seven years we were part of Reba Place Church, a Christian church community. We are now members of a multi-racial congregation in the Chicago area.

ABOUT THE BOOK

…But Hope May Be Just Across the Street

Grace Meredith is a beloved contemporary Christian recording artist whose career–and personal life–hits unexpected turbulence. She feels grounded–in more ways than one.
Grace s fiancé, bothered by her outspoken stance on purity and her near-constant travel, has broken off their relationship. Exhausted and unable to continue her current concert schedule, Grace returns home to Chicago, where she is soon stranded in a major snowstorm. Facing new questions about her future and her faith, Grace finds herself connecting for the first time with the residents of her neighborhood. What she discovers in these unexpected relationships could change everything.

Welcome to the Neighborhood
The first in the Windy City Neighbors series, Grounded is an uplifting, contemporary story about ordinary people wrestling with the spiritual and practical issues of real life. The series employs the innovative storytelling technique of parallel novels, each with its own drama and story arc, but whose characters lives become intertwined and affect one another. Grounded welcomes you to Beecham Street–a typical, isolated American neighborhood that might just be a place of hope.

LUCY COME HOME

By: Dave and Neta Jackson

About the book:
Lucy Come Home

Dave and Neta Jackson
Fifteen-year-old Cindy worked long days beside her migrant worker family in Michigan’s sugar beet fields in the early 1940s — the “war years” — until she met a dashing young man from a traveling carnival, bringing some joy and fun into her hard-scrabble life. But a tragic twist of fate — and a dead field boss– sent the two young people on the run, leaving behind family and everything she’d ever known.
Lucy Tucker, the crotchety old bag lady from the popular Yada Yada House of Hope series, is a veteran of Chicago streets and not about to give up her independence, even as she approaches her 80th birthday.
Until, that is, a young displaced woman with her gentle aging mother and a dog named Dandy seem to need her — unsettling the secretive Lucy, who doesn’t let anyone get too close. But just when it seems her past is catching up with her to bring her in out of the cold… Lucy disappears again. How these two tales intersect and intertwine between past and present gradually shines light into the dark corners of Lucy’s murky past. But… why won’t Lucy come home?

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Lucy Comes Home by Dave and Neta Jackson

Wow, what a wonderful heartwarming story about Lucy Tucker.  We learn about Lucy’s life by the flashbacks she has of her life starting in the 1940’s and her life as it is now. We see how she handled the very difficult situations she was forced to be in, and how she is handling life today and a homeless woman. Her live was definitely not the best life from the beginning. Lucy lives in the Manna House Shelter, and seems to like it there just fine. I really grew to love Lucy as I read her story. She is a unique lady, even though living in a Shelter, no home of her own, she was always helping others. What it would be like to have a friend like Lucy!

I have heard of the Yada Yada books but never read any of them, but if they are anything like this one, that have to be wonderful! Dave and Neta Jackson created a cast of characters that the readers that grip your heart, and especially Lucy and Cindy. I enjoyed the trip back to the 1940’s even though times were rough just after the Great Depression. I think part of my interest here was that both my parents were teenagers during this time, and heard them talk about the tough times their families went through. This made me reconnect with both of them and the flashbacks I have of the stories they told.

I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting a wonderful, good ole read! You will not be disappointed!
