Book Description:

Hooray! Fiona has finally convinced her boyfriend detective Nathan Landry to go on a romantic Caribbean cruise. Unfortunately, their fun on the high seas is interrupted by murder. It isn’t long before they discover a boatload of suspects, who have motives deeper than the ocean for wanting the victim out of their lives.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I was honored to read book one in A Fiona Quinn Mystery series and I couldn’t wait to snuggle up in another cozy mystery where I know Fiona would be on her deceive hunt. That girl can smell trouble anywhere. Well, this time Fiona and Nathan’s cruise is a cruise gone bad from the start. In the very beginning there is what is thought to be an attempted murder and we know Fiona can’t let this one go, fun cruise or not. So here goes her  sleuthing skills, and she and Nathan put their heads together and start checking out what is happening and before they know it, the cruise gone bad it done with! I love this sweet cozy mystery just as much as the first Fiona Mystery I read. Though it’s a series you can certainly read these as a stand alone, but I would like to eventually read them in order because I think it would be more fun.

This time I listen to this one, and the narration by Maren Swenson Waxenberg was such a wonderful pleasant experience. I’m not a huge fan of audio books, they are slowly growing on me, and I am finding out that it is the person doing the narration that makes the audio book. I could listen to Waxenberg for hours at a time and not get tired. I do have another Fiona Cozy Mystery review coming up in a couple of weeks so I hope you will check it out. If you love yourself a good cozy mystery, only now we can’t say by the fire unless we go outside in the heat, this is an amazing choice for you. This Fiona Quinn Mystery gets Five Stars from me.

Genre:  Mystery / Suspense

Publisher:  Milford House Press

Release date:  April 2021

Format available for review:  print and ebook (Gifted Kindle)

Will send print books out:  USA and Canada

Tour dates: June 14 to July 2

Content Rating:  PG-13: There are a couple of murders and mild language (damn, shit)

Book Description:

Someone she knows is watching.

Someone she knows is stalking.

And something hides in the darkness.

With a Category 4 hurricane about to make landfall, boat safety instructor Kate Parks is running out of time. Bodies are piling up–and they’re not from the raging storm. An injury may have ended her career as a Fish and Wildlife officer, but nothing can keep her away from the investigation.

And it doesn’t take long for her to see that the clues have one thing in common: a connection to the recent death of her five-year-old nephew.

In a brewing storm of rage, guilt, and family secrets, Kate fights to protect her grieving sister just as the hurricane threatens everything she knows and loves. But before her world is completely ravaged, she must uncover one final truth:

Run from the water.

Hide from the wind.

Flee from the shadows where a weeper seeks revenge.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I enjoyed any read that is a suspense, so when Darkness Hides came up for review, I had to read it because it just sounded like a very good read and I was not disappointed! This is one of those books that takes a few chapters to get into the story but then you just can’t put it down and it was a sleepless night for me reading this one.

Kate’s five year old nephew was killed in an accident and she is trying to be there for her sister. But in the meantime there is a Category 4 hurricane brewing. People are dying before their eyes and more and more Kate is wondering if it had anything to do with her nephews accident. Kate is determined to find out what is going on in this Florida town.

J.C. Gatlin creates a cast of characters that play their parts so well as the story unfolds. The story was intense since the 5 year old may have been involved. Kate does her best to keep up with the strict details of the story so she could really find out who was murdering these people and why. And why were people watching her so closely. You will find this out and so much more in this intriguing, interesting suspense that will stay with you for quite some time. This one is a Five Stars for me.

Can you tell me about your new book, Darkness Hides?

Darkness Hides is an Amateur Sleuth murder mystery set in Florida. In it, a former Fish and Wildlife officer launches an off-the-books investigation into a string of corpses that appear to have a connection to her nephew’s death. Then the hurricane hits.

What does the title mean?

That’s a great question. The title, Darkness Hides, has several meanings. The obvious connection is to a children’s book that a grieving mother reads to her deceased son titled Where the Darkness Hides. Figuratively, as a murder mystery, the title eludes to one of the characters hiding the darkness inside of him, as he has the capacity to commit several murders.

Who is the main character and is she based on a real person?

Kate Parks is the “amateur sleuth” who gets wrapped-up in solving the murder mystery. She’s a young woman in her early thirties trying to put her life back together after a gunshot injury ended her career with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission. She’s also trying to mend the estranged relationship with her sister and reevaluating where her relationship is going with a rebel-with-too-many-causes boyfriend. She’s not based on any one person but is an amalgamation of many people. There’s even a little of me in the character.

What inspired you to create this character?

There’s a pub where I hang out that has several local police and Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission officers who also hang out there when they’re off duty. Kate was born from my conversations with them. They have a million incredible stories. However, I wanted to keep her as an “amateur sleuth,” so law enforcement became her back story. Now, getting involved in a murder investigation is outside her job responsibilities. Plus, she’s pursuing a murderer without a gun, which added another level of peril.

Why do you write murder mysteries?

I’ve been an avid mystery reader my whole life. As a kid, I read all the Encyclopedia Brown mysteries, as well as The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew mysteries. Those books inspired me to become an author as an adult. Mysteries have all the elements I love: plot twists, compelling characters with secrets to hide, and a good hook. My mysteries go one step further and deliver an unexpected ending. I put a lot of time in creating a suspenseful ending that keeps the reader turning pages.

What do you hope readers take away from Darkness Hides?

I want readers to have that rush that comes with reading a suspenseful book that they just can’t put down. Several people have told me that they stayed up till the wee hours in the morning to finish Darkness Hides because they just couldn’t tear themselves away from it. That’s my favorite type of book to read, and that’s the type of book I wanted to write.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I love it when a book captures my attention within the first few pages and that is just what Love Blooms did. Ethan decides to go to Bluestar Island when his mom calls him about his aunt needing help. He has been to the island many times throughout the years and his aunt has been good to him, and after all, he just extended his leave from the fire department after a horrific accident placed him off from work. What can it hurt to go stay at the island for a while? But Ethan wasn’t expecting to meet Hannah there.
In Jennifer Faye’s usual style, she writes another amazing sweet story that will leaving you swooning for quite some time. I love her characters, especially Ethan and Hannah, and the supporting characters make up for a lot of fun in this story. I love Aunt Birdie, even though she is meddlesome! She brings so much fun and humor to the story I am glad Faye thought of creating her. The island is a place I would love to live. Small town, friendly people, the beach anytime you want to go. What’s not to like? If you enjoy a good summer beach read that will keep you laughing and having fun, this is an amazing read for you. Love Blooms by Jennifer Faye gets Five Stars from me!

Everyone wants to hear the crazy stories. They want to hear about the celebrities, their flaws and their weird, fabulous quirks. They want to know about drugs and sex, and surprisingly little about rock and roll. They want to hear about the late nights, the VIP parties, the swag. Tour and Giveaway for Stealing the First Mate by Tabitha Bouldin

About the Book

Book: Stealing the First Mate

Author: Tabitha Bouldin

Genre: Christian Contemporary Romance

Release date: June 29, 2021

Sometimes, happily ever after is as elusive as a pirate’s treasure.

Darcy Riggins dove headfirst into the online dating pool and sank. Every time.

Her lifelong dream of becoming a wife and mother becomes more elusive every year. So, taking the lack of a Mr. Right in her life as a decided “No!” from God, Darcy gives up altogether.

Single and happy is not an oxymoron. Right?

Nigel Jones has loved Darcy for ages, but her father (his boss, of course) ordered him to keep his feelings to himself, thanks to a stupid mistake that Darcy (thankfully) doesn’t know about.  Too bad her dad does.

Being single and content turns out to be tougher than Darcy imagined, and when she begins doubting everything she’s ever known, Nigel decides it’s time to admit his mistakes, tell the truth, and trust God for the outcome.

In this “forbidden-love-meets-friends-to-more” novel, Stealing the First Mate continues the Elnora Island romances of the Independence Islands Series featuring five islands, six authors, and a boatload of happily-ever-afters.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I have enjoyed the Elnora Island series reads and Stealing the First Mate was another beach story that I enjoyed. It did take me a while to get into the book. Nigel and Darcy were both interesting characters and both had their own issues to work through. The two has known each other for a very long time and Nigel is still haunted by a stupid mistake from long ago that has Darcy’s dad banning a relationship between them but will that last?

It took me several chapters to like this book and really get into the story, but then it opens up and turns out to be a pretty good read. I enjoyed seeing Nigel and Darcy spend new time together and their interactions. The author creates characters that tell the story well as the story unfolds. This has been an interesting read and I can’t wait for the next book in this series. This one is a good Four Stars for me.

More from Tabitha

I love the friends-to-something-more trope. There’s something invigorating about the challenges of stepping into a different kind of relationship with someone you already know and trust. The risk of losing the friendship if things go badly comes to the forefront and each character has to decide if they’ll take the risk or keep things as they are.

For Nigel and Darcy, there’s the added difficulty of Nigel’s unrequited love. They’ve been best friends forever, and he’s loved Darcy all that time. And she’s clueless! How does that happen?

I wish I could say this story came from my own experience, but that isn’t the case. While my husband and I knew each other for several years before we started dating, we were hardly friends. High school social circles are brutal things. Plus, he had a crush on my cousin, and I was dating someone else.

But it all worked out.

And we’re best friends now.

When it came time to write Stealing the First Mate, I knew Nigel and Darcy were friends. It wasn’t until I worked my way through the first chapter that the depth of their relationship started to emerge, and I realized they were best friends. Darcy runs to Nigel for advise (even dating advise, which became really awkward for Nigel).

Darcy has been looking for Mr. Right so long she can’t see the truth staring back at her in Nigel’s eyes.

Writing their story is one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve had in writing.

An Alaskan Homecoming
(Northern Lights #8)
By Beth Carpenter
Contemporary Romance
Paperback & ebook, 384 Pages
June 1, 2021 by Harlequin Heartwarming

“Ever after” wasn’t the plan…
Until now!

Rowan O’Shea’s intention was just to visit her family in the small Alaskan town she calls home. Now she’s not sure she wants to leave, given the romantic mess she’s left behind. A temporary fake marriage to gorgeous veterinarian Zack Vogel might be the perfect solution, if she can convince Zack. But Rowan’s marriage of convenience has a seriously inconvenient snag—she’s falling for her new fake husband!

🐎

MY THOUGHTS ON An Alaskan Homecoming

I always love a story where there is a fake romance or fake marriage, and this one is wonderful. Rowan thought it could work until the attraction started for Zack Vogel. A veterinarian is just not suppose to be so gorgeous, is he? Rowen is in a bit of romantic mess and trying to figure out what to do to please everyone, but that doesn’t always work. So now she has to figure this all out, with falling for Zack.

I love Beth Carpenter’s books and have read many of them. In this one, Beth writes a wonderful story in her own unique writing ability, and I love this one so much. Rowan and Zack are adorable. I love the attraction with them as they interact together. The fake marriage was kinda dangerous because it gave them so much time with each other. Maybe now Rowan can stop pleasing others so much and strat doing something for herself. Zack is so adorable and I love his veterinarian care of wild animals and their needs and then that he makes sure they are back in their own habitat. He and Rowan have a lot of issues to work through and figure out, but it’s really fun watching their fake togetherness. I can’t wait to see what Beth Carpenter has for us next. If you love a sweet romance, this is an awesome one for you. It is part of the Harlequin Heartwarming line of Romances and they are the best!

Something Fishy

by Lois Schmitt

June 1-30, 2021 Tour

Synopsis:

Something Fishy by Lois Schmitt

When attorney Samuel Wong goes missing. wildlife magazine reporter Kristy Farrell believes the disappearance is tied into her latest story concerning twenty acres of prime beachfront property that the Clam Shell Cove Aquarium hopes to purchase. Sam works for multi-millionaire land developer Lucien Moray who wants to buy the property for an upscale condominium. The waterfront community is divided on this issue like the Hatfields and McCoys with environmentalists siding with the aquarium and local business owners lining up behind Moray.

Meanwhile, a body is found in the bay. Kristy, aided by her veterinarian daughter, investigates and discovers deep secrets among the aquarium staff–secrets that point to one of them as a killer. Soon the aquarium is plagued with accidents, Kristy has a near death encounter with a nine foot bull shark, and a second murder occurs.

But ferreting out the murderer and discovering the story behind Sam’s disappearance aren’t Kristy’s only challenges. When her widowed septuagenarian mother announces her engagement, Kristy suspects her mom’s soon to be husband is not all he appears to be. As Kristy tries to find the truth before her mother ties the knot, she also races the clock to find the aquarium killer before this killer strikes again.

Read an excerpt:

CHAPTER ONE

“Something bad happened to Sam. I know it.”

Katie Chandler’s sea green eyes filled with tears. A sea lion trainer at the Clam Shell Cove Aquarium, Katie had been my daughter’s college roommate.

“Maybe Sam worked late and forgot to call,” I said.

Katie shook her head, her chestnut hair flying in the bay breeze. “No. He hasn’t answered my texts or phone calls. I stopped by his house twice too. No one’s home.”

Silence. I tried thinking of something helpful, or at least hopeful, to say.

“I called the police, Mrs. Farrell. The officer said being stood up for a dinner date isn’t enough for a missing persons case—that maybe it was Sam’s way of breaking up.”

I shifted my gaze to the whitecaps on the bay while Katie’s statement sank into my brain.  Perhaps the officer was right. I knew from my daughter Abby that the relationship between Katie Chandler and Samuel Wong had hit a rough patch.

The conflict: Katie, who served as executor of her late grandmother’s charitable trust, was donating six million dollars of this money to the aquarium’s expansion project, which included the acquisition of twenty acres of adjacent land. Sam worked as executive assistant to multi-millionaire developer Lucien Moray who wanted to buy the bay front property for luxury condominiums. What started off as friendly bantering between Katie and Sam had escalated into explosive arguments that had become increasingly personal.

But Katie and Sam weren’t the only ones embroiled in this controversy. The community at large had become like the Hatfields and McCoys. Environmentalists wanted the property to go to the aquarium where it would be used for breeding grounds for endangered species, an aquatic   animal rehabilitation center, and a research camp for marine scientists. Local business owners sided with Moray, hoping high end condo owners would bolster the area’s economy. I was writing an article on this for Animal Advocate Magazine. That’s why I was at the aquarium today.

Katie continued, “No matter what happened between us, Sam would never stand me up. He’s my fiancé not someone I picked up a few hours ago at a bar. Besides, Sam came around to my point of view. He had it with Lucien Moray. He hadn’t told anyone but me yet, but he was quitting his job at the end of the year.”

“I’ve an interview later this morning with Moray,” I said. “I’ll check around and see what I can find out. Someone in Moray’s office may know Sam’s whereabouts.”

“What if no one does?”

“Let’s take it one step at a time.” I glanced at my watch, then pushed myself off the rock where I’d been sitting, a task that would have been easier if I were ten years younger and twenty pounds lighter. “Speaking of interviews, my appointment with your aquarium director is in five minutes, so I better head inside. I’ll call you tonight.”

Katie sighed. “Thanks. I should get back to my sea lions too. We’ve a show at eleven.” She rose and stretched her small wiry body. “After the show, I’ll stop at Sam’s house again.”

Katie, shoulders slumped, wandered off in the direction of the outdoor sea lion amphitheater. I stood for a moment, inhaling the salt air while watching a seagull dive into the bay and zoom back to the sky with a fish in its mouth. As the autumn wind sent a sudden chill down my spine, I wrapped my arms around my body, thinking back to when Katie and my Abby attended college. Abby often acted impulsively, out of emotion, but Katie had always been levelheaded, never someone to jump to conclusions. What if Sam is really in trouble? The thought nagged at me as I trekked up the sandy beach and stepped into the building that housed the indoor exhibits.

I made my way down a long corridor, surrounded by floor to ceiling glass tanks housing ocean life from around the world. I paused at the shark tank and marveled at the grace and beauty of these fearsome predators gliding silently through the water, causing hardly a ripple. I would be back here soon. In addition to my article on the land expansion, I was writing a story on ocean predators.

I veered down the administration wing. When I came to a door marked  DIRECTOR, I glanced again at my watch. Ten-thirty. Right on time. I knocked.

“Enter,” a booming voice responded. I pulled open the door and stepped inside.

Standing in front of me was a man who appeared to be in his mid-fifties. Noting his polished wingtips, sharply creased trousers, navy blazer, crisp white shirt, and perfectly knotted tie, I wished I’d dusted the sand off my shoes.

We stood face to face. Actually, it was more like face to chest. I was only five feet tall and this man towered over me by at least a foot and a half.

“Commander Conrad West,” he said, extending his arm. His handshake was firm and strong. “You must be Kristy Farrell, the reporter from Animal Advocate Magazine.”

Conrad West stood ramrod straight, probably a throw-back from his military training. A former naval commander—the youngest African American to be appointed a commander in the navy’s history—he had started his career as a medical corpsman. He had been director of the Clam Shell Cove Aquarium since his retirement from the navy last year.

He walked behind his desk and positioned himself in a large swivel chair.

“You may sit,” he said, pointing to a straight back chair facing him.

I slid into the chair, suppressing the urge to playfully salute.

He went straight to the point. “I understand you’re writing about the land acquisition. Have you seen our expansion plans?”

“Yes, and they are impressive. But how will the aquarium come up with the money to buy this land?” I asked, fumbling through my bag for my pad and pen. “You’re competing with the bottomless pockets of Lucien Moray.”

Commander West leaned forward, his hands clasped in front, as if praying that what he was about to say would come true. “The current property owner, Stuart Holland, is a business man who’s not about to forgo a profit. But he’s also an active conservationist and a lifelong resident of this area who would like to see the land used in an environmentally friendly manner. He’s kept it vacant until recent financial loses forced him to put it up for sale.”

The Commander leaned back. “There’ll be no bidding war. He set a price—ten million dollars. The land is worth more, but Stuart wants it to go to us, so he set a price he feels we can reach. If we can raise the money by next summer, the land is ours.”

“Ten million is a high goal.”

He nodded. “More than half of the funding will come from a trust set up by Alicia Wilcox Chandler. We also have one million in reserve that we accumulated during the past few years. Of course, we’re still three million short, but our new development officer is planning an aggressive fundraising campaign with—”

A loud knock on the door interrupted the conversation.

Commander West scowled. “Enter.”

A plump woman with a bad case of acne barged into the room. She wore jeans and a light blue shirt with an aquarium patch on the upper left pocket identifying her as Madge.

“Commander,” she said, slightly out of breath. “We have a problem. The sea lion show is in ten minutes, and Katie just ran out.”

“What do you mean she ran out?”

The woman shrugged. “She took a call on her cell phone, then flew out of the amphitheater.

“Didn’t she say anything?” The scowl hadn’t left his face.

The woman paused, furrowing her eyebrows as if deep in thought. “Oh, yeah. But I don’t know if it had to do with why she left.”

“What did she say?” He appeared to be talking through gritted teeth.

“She said two fishermen found a body floating in the inlet.”

Genre:  Juvenile fiction/social themes or animals/birds
    Publisher:  Sage Green Press

Book Description:

Mia and the Hummingbird is the story of a young girl who immigrates to a new country and learns to accept a new life. She sees the hummingbird building her nest for her babies and thinks that she and the bird are similar as they learn to adapt to their new homes. Mia and the

Hummingbird includes information about environmental and social reasons for immigration, the struggle to adapt to a new home and information about hummingbirds. Included is a glossary about these issues, a bibliography, and references.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Mia and the Hummingbird is not only a sweet children’s story, it is so much more. This book talks of Mia, who had no choice but to leave her county and move to the US. There are so many issues to deal with when you move to a different country. One very important issues is sometimes learning a new language. Then there is meeting new people and finding new friends, the foods are probably different. I felt so bad for this sweet girl. Then Mia saw a Humming bird outside her window as she is trying to build a nest for her babies, and as Mia watched, she learn a lot from this about her new move. This cute Hummingbird was full of great valuable lessons for Mia to learn and do. Mia sounds like a smart little girl and I know you would love reading this book to your child. This book deserves to be everywhere a child is. Whether it be a library, Schoolroom or library or daycare. This one is Four Stars for me.

AND NOW AN INTERESTING INTERVIEW WITH THIS AUTHOR!

  1. What got you interested in children’s books?

I have always loved nature and the outdoors, I like to draw, and I want to inspire kids to find beauty in nature and work to improve our environment. Several years ago, I saw the traveling exhibit called “Washed Ashore, where artist Angela Pozzi, took ocean trash and turned it into sculptures of imaginative sea creatures with the hopeful message that everyone can do something to help the problem with plastic in the ocean, I decided that I wanted to help also by writing hopeful books that address serious environmental issues. My first book addressed the ocean plastic problem.

  1. What do you hope kids take away from the book?

I want kids to learn to love nature and to be hopeful and resilient and persistent. I also want them also to treat all people and the planet with respect and think about issues tied to justice and equity.  Maybe that is a lot to hope for, but I am optimistic and have a lot of faith in the next generation.

I also hope that kids and parents enjoy the text boxes and glossary because they provide some facts and vocabulary that can aid in stimulating a rich book discussion.

  1. Why does the story start off with pages going back and forth between Mia and the Bird?

Many of the books that I enjoy, start off by first describing one character, then a second character and so forth. As a reader, I find this is a good way to engage me in a story because just as I start to get to know one character, the story jumps to someone else. I thought it would be fun to try this approach in a much simpler format for a kid’s book.

  1. What got you interested in hummingbirds?

Several things: first, I was hiking, and a hummingbird kept flying close to me because I got too close to its nest.  The birds constant flying made me stop and look for the nest which I found.  Next my neighbor noticed a nest in his tree and set up a step latter so that I could walk up and peak in the nest and watch the baby bird hatch and grow. I took several pictures of the little birds in the nest. Third during the pandemic, I, and all my neighbors, put out feeders and all became avid hummingbird watchers.

  1. What is your favorite part of the story?

There are several parts of the story that I like.  I like the scene where Mia rode her bike through the neighborhood, and nothing looked familiar. This was based on my experience walking in France one day when I got lost and didn’t know a lot of French.  Like Mia, I approach a nearby women and with a shaky voice and tears in my eyes, asked for help. At the time I was about 50 years older than Mia.  The woman was very kind and got me home.  I also like the scene where the branch snapped, and the nest is carried off by the wind because where I live we have fierce thunder storms so this scene seems so real to me.

GREAT INTERVIEW FROM AUTHOR KIM PATRICK

What made you want to write a children’s book?

Children take in information at such a phenomenal rate compared to adults. Learning to love yourself is something that once you learn it, you never forget it. Why not start with the very young?

In this book you focus on self worth and loving yourself. Why?

I wanted to write a book that would be interesting and funny, but also offer more than just a good giggle. Maybe if more kids learned to appreciate their uniqueness instead of trying to conform, then we’d have much happier adults in the world.

How do you decide what to write about for a children’s book?

I can’t speak to what other writers do, but for me it starts out as something that has really caused an emotional reaction in me. Watching kids on a playground bully another kid kicked off this book. Luckily, the parents stepped in and the situation was diffused, but I always wondered about the poor kid that was picked on. How did he feel? How did his mother deal with the fall out from that?

How do you make time to write?

I have to schedule it in or it never gets done! Some of the biggest writing distractions for me are movies, my animals demanding playtime, and having to stop and eat.

Will you be writing another book?

After I finish writing a book I usually give myself time to reconnect with the world and my family. Then, when it’s time I’ll know it and another book will happen.

AND NOW AN INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR Nabila Khashoggi

What is Land of the Midnight Sun all about?

This is the fifth book in the Spartan & the Green Egg series and it is set in Greenland. The gang of kids, along with their helpful alien friend, named Egg, must help rescue a film crew and their guides from an iceberg that has broken away from the mainland. It tells a great story, IMHO, but also uses climate change and its impact as a backdrop.

Do you have a favorite among the books you’ve written?

Actually, it’s always the one I’ve just finished. Probably because it is the one that is freshest in my mind!

How did you get started writing children’s books?

I got started on a whim. I used to tell my son, Spartan, bedtime stories that involved his favorite toy (a green egg). It kind of took on a life of its own and I took the leap into making them into a graphic novel.

Why did you choose to write your book as a graphic novel?

I decided that using a graphic novel format would make the book more accessible to a wider range of children, especially those readers who maybe weren’t fans of reading. I also am a comic book fan and grew up loving them.

What’s next?

Well, I’m working on Book 6 in the series as well as working as the spokeswoman for The Children for Peace. It’s a nonprofit organization that helps children in impoverished places around the world to obtain equipment, books, desks, and so forth for their schools.

Meet the Author:

When her eldest son was a toddler, Nabila used to entertain him with made-up stories about a boy who traveled the world inside a live green egg that just so happened to be an alien from another planet. She turned the tales into a colorful children¹s graphic novel series, Spartan and the Green Egg, with the intention of introducing children to environmental and cultural themes around the world.

A portion of all proceeds from the Spartan and the Green Egg book series, toys and accessories is donated to The Children for Peace ONLUS. Based in Italy, this non-governmental organization helps young people worldwide who are living in challenging circumstances obtain their essential needs such as food, medical help and educational opportunities. Nabila currently lives in New York and has two sons.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Finding my Sunshine is about Shannon Leith McGuire life. About the difficult issues she has had to face pretty much as long as she remembers. She has a learning disability, which is devastating trying to learn with other people your age that never have problems, and that’s enough to throw anyone down. This lead to alcohol, being kicked out of school and finding her own way. It was working in a nursing home that brought Sunshine to her life. Those sweet older people were full of wisdom and love and showed Shannon what she has needed and is missing. Shannon not only found her SUNSHINE in the nursing Home she found a love of the residents there. She was able to find taking care of these lovely people was healing to her life. I love that Shannon found healing in such a place. We sometimes forget the wisdom of older people.                                                Shannon’s story is unique and I love the way she is so straightforward open and honest in what she has written in her book. A lot of people would be too ashamed, but if this book can help one person it would be worth it. This book can be so much help for so many people. This one is truly a Five Stars for me. Sometimes it is difficult rating a book when reading a book so different from your normal reads but this book wasn’t a problem at all. Knowing how much Finding my Sunshine will be such a help to others gave me my rating. I strongly encourage you to check out this one.

Meet the Author:

Shannon was raised in a small town in Eastern Montana, where you leave your car keys in the ignition and your front door unlocked all the time. The kind of place where sunsets and sunrises can be seen for miles on the horizon. Where the spring crickets and frogs resting in the irrigation ditches helped transition the days into a calm resting night. Where the winters can get so cold, air can freeze. It was only after she was academically suspended by the college she was attending, that she became a Certified Nurses Aide (CNA). She did her training in Billings, Montana and it was there she learned how to take care of others and bonded with the geriatric population. For over five years, Shannon worked in the same nursing home where she received her training. The work was hard, but it grounded her and helped her find balance in what had become a deeply unbalanced life. It was not until she was a CNA, at one of the hospitals that she had a dream-three nights in a row-that she was going to become a nurse. She currently resides in Tampa, Florida, where you may hear her laughing with her husband of over 10 years,  scuba diving in the ocean, taking walks with their rescued pit-bull dog- Darby, or dancing together to life’s music.

Faith in the Mtn Valley

This epic journey is the only way to leave her secrets behind.

After eleven years spent looking for the girl who stole his heart, Jean-Jacques Baptiste—better known as French to his friends—is tempted to give up. Until the day he spotted the flaxen-haired stranger traveling the wooded path with Blackfoot Indians. He never imagined he’d find his childhood friend masquerading as a man in this Rocky Mountain wilderness, hundreds of miles from the Canadian town where he last saw her. No matter her reasons, he can’t let her go this time.

Colette Mignon’s life has become a cacophony of lies, including the fact that her Blackfoot Indian companions believe she’s a man. She’s willing to live the taxing life of a trapper in these desolate mountains as long as it keeps her secrets hidden. When her childhood friend and first love discovers her, his determination to help might put everything at risk.

As the worst of her past threatens to catch up with her, the hope for Colette’s new life shatters. But no matter what, she must protect the one good thing that came from all her mistakes. Though French is determined to stay at her side, she can’t let him become entangled in the perilous consequences of her actions. If only it wasn’t so painful to push him away. More from Misty

Ever Played Dress-up?

I’ll bet most of us played “Let’s Pretend” when we were kids. Maybe you dressed up as a princess, or a knight, or a soldier. When we were little, my grandmother had a secondhand wedding dress she let us play with. It had the long train and veil that dragged several feet behind a grown woman. We spent so many fun hours dressing up and pretending. And of course, there were all the times my older brother and I played cowboys as we rode our horses.

With so much experience playing dress-up and “let’s pretend,” I thoroughly enjoyed writing the story of a heroine who pretended to be a man! And not just a fellow around town. She joined up with a group of five Blackfoot braves and attempted to pass herself off as a man for weeks while she lived in their camp, trapping alongside them!

She had a good reason for attempting the ruse, and you can find out if she pulls it off in Faith in the Mountain Valley. This might be my favorite of all the books in the Call of the Rockies series. I pray you enjoy it too!

My THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I was so thrilled to read book Five in this series and was even more excited to read Jean-Jacques and Colette’s story. Jean-Jacques has waiting a long time to finally find the woman he loved so much. Eleven years he has searched. I bet that wouldn’t happen in America! Faith in the Mountain Valley is such a wonderful book, and I love all of the humor throughout the book. Misty Beller does such an amazing job of creating characters that you are sure to quickly fall in love with. And it’s been nice to hear about the characters from the previous books.

If you enjoy historical books about trailing through the mountains of Canada, living off the land, this would be an amazing choice for you. And I would encourage you to check out the first four books in this series. I can not wait for the sixth book in th9⁹0⁰is series. I will not be happy to put these characters to rest to I really hope Ms. Beller keeps them in her future books.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

About the Author

kathy

After the passing of my parents, I evaluated at what I was doing with my life and my contribution to others. I’ve always had a heart for teaching kids. I’ve been a classroom teacher, a homeschool mom, a tutor, and a substitute for many years. I’ve written, illustrated, and published the Bandana Acres series of Early Reader Chapter Books with solid moral lessons that fill a genre gap between picture and chapter books. Fellow teachers say, “Great! Keep it up. We need more of these.”

As a twelve-year-old, I identified with a fictional orphaned girl and was so impressed with her cleverness and honesty that I wanted to be like her. It was this story that inspired me to write Emeline – A Journey — a story that will educate, encourage, and inspire your tween or teen to find their way as a confident young adult.

A companion book, a consumable guided journal entitled My Journey, will challenge your young adult to important questions and give them lots of room to process their thoughts, hopes, and dreams.

.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I enjoyed reading this short historical fiction. It’s a little scary for a father to ask his child to travel so far alone. I can see why, but it is scary. Emeline took readers on an interesting journey to the different towns and the people she met. Many people she loved and were like family. I’m glad she found a family she could call her own, and felt comfortable enough to leave her horse.

All in all this is a fun book for anyone, but your teen or tween daughter would really love this story of sweet Emeline. I really like the journal she keeps and three scripture throughout the book that this young girl read and depending on the God of the scriptures to protect her. This is something else that is good for teens to learn. Emeline – A Journey would make a great gift, and the journal that goes with the story is amazing and a great tool to have on your walk with the Lord. I highly recommend this book to the younger generation, but I think any teen tween or adult will enjoy it.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

More from Kathy

Research for Emeline’s story gave me such joy. It amazed me how much I learned about life in 1890 from internet searches, YouTube videos, and library books. Some topics, however, were more difficult than others. I purchased a book about 1800s printing for lithography details. I later gifted this beautiful book to my printer brother-in-law.

With new technology bursting at the seams of the fabric of our lives, could your young adult have an interest in such a time as 1890? Fantasies and futuristic books claim attention and provide an escape from our time and place. But the 1890s was a fascinating time, too, with inventions that would change how we live forever — inventions that we take for granted today. Regardless of the external factors, people then had the same personal issues. People remain people, no matter when or where they live.

I hope that from reading or listening to this book, your tweens and teens will internalize the important character qualities vital for confident, successful adulthood. The companion book, My Journey, follows the same values shown in Emeline’s book and provides a place for personal evaluation and self-discovery.

About the Author

Award-winning author Caryl McAdoo prays her story brings God glory, and her best-selling stories—fifty-nine published—delight Christian readers around the world. The prolific writer also enjoys singing the new songs the Lord gives her; you may listen at YouTube. Sharing four children and twenty-one grandsugars (three greats), Caryl and Ron (her high-school-sweetheart-husband of over fifty years) live in the woods south of Clarksville, seat of Red River County in far Northeast Texas. The McAdoos wait expectantly for God to open the next door.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

First off, I love the cover of this book. It gives such a warm feeling and it is simply beautiful. It makes me want to dig into the book. Ruth is a wet nurse for Logan’s son, and traveling on a wagon train for out west as well. This had to be a difficult task for Ruth to do. I have read many wagon train stories, and I love them, but some of those trails are rougher than rough! I enjoyed following these people as they traveled together to their new land and homes.

I really liked Ruth and Logan and Caryl McAdoo’s writing is again phenomenal. I enjoy her writing style and enjoy laying back and just enjoying the ride. The characters were special and developed well. I so much enjoyed Ruth and Logan. Logan was so nice and caring. And so was Ruth but having turn him down for a marriage proposal, that made for a little bit of a strain but their story none the less Their sweet story is a very good, and enjoyed reading it so very good. I want to read more of the wagon train stories when I get a chance, and I highly recommend this one, especially if you enjoy historical reads.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

More from Caryl

I’ve loved the premise of RUTH for seven years now, that’s when the beginning of this story was first written, way before its time! Its title was Evelyn’s Redemption back then, but I’ve since had a favorite character named Evelyn in COVERING LOVE and MIGHTY TO SAVE (books eight and nine in the Texas Romance Family Saga series), so my heroine needed a new name.

Ruth was my maternal grandmother’s name and Mama’s middle name  (Naomi Ruth), and though Ron doesn’t like me to name characters after family members, he let me have my way . . . as my heroes usually let my heroines. 😊 So, she became Ruth.

I pulled up the ten thousand words already written back in 2014, caught up-to-date to refresh the story in my mind, then took off writing! In a month and a day, I finished this story that I just love! Never knowing where it’s going—or exactly how it will end when I start—I so enjoy the tale as I write it just as you do when you read it! God gives me the most awesome stories I’m so thankful for!

My hero’s thirteen-year-old daughter Hannah is one of my favorites in this story. Her great character created such an example of taking up an offense that is hard to put down. I think we’ve all been there, and to me, it’s especially hard to forgive and get over it when the offense is taken up on behalf of someone we love. The loved one like gets extra grace to forgive, but not so for the offended-on-their-behalf!

I love that God helps me weave scriptural lessons into my stories, lessons that I’ve learned in walking with Him for more than sixty years—and I’ve learned a lot! Besides praying my stories give Him glory, I also pray they help those who read them draw closer to Him—or learn ways to live more purely for Him.

We serve a mighty God indeed, and it’s my honor to help advance His Kingdom here on earth through writing these stories! Also, I enjoy singing the new songs He gives me! Check out ‘Caryl McAdoo’ on YouTube! I have a few songs up there and need to video more.

So, have a blessed day, y’all, and may God’s joy and peace encompass you everywhere you go!

Blessings!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Bobos Babes Adventures: The Missing Egg is an adorable story about Scarlett the angel, Cora the fairy, and Daphne the princess and how the help daddy Russell the Swan find a missing egg before the mama Swan comes home to her little far away and so much fun town of Harmony. Wow those characters are a mouthful, but I love each one of them. Your child has a surprise in store for them when you read this precious book to them. I bet you won’t read it just once! I love the story as well and there’s even a bit if a mystery to it. It’s all so much fun.

I fell in love with the sweet characters in this book created by Illustrator Emily Hercock. The front cover is beautiful and will have children grabbing this book from the shelf first. The colors and so pretty, and the words on the pages and the pictures created work together so perfectly. This beautiful book would be great for your little girl’s library or it would be perfect for any younger children’s classrooms, or in daycare. I highly recommend this one and give it a Five Stars!

Book Description:

A dash of whimsy and a dose of wisdom for our times.

If you like stories that call to mind a simpler era and words strung in lyrical ways, this collection will take you to a wondrous world where ordinary rules do not apply.

Podcasts, blogs, movies, vlogs—people spin yarns in many ways. But nothing dazzles like a story told in person. In the right teller’s hands, a simple narrative has unfathomable power. Such is the case with Aunt Truly, a spellbinding character in Laura McHale Holland’s novel The Kiminee Dream. She is old, but no one knows her age; she travels, but where she goes is a mystery. One thing is certain: she collects stories.

The ten tales in this book present traditional and original stories Aunt Truly might tell you if you happened by her home, Windy Wood, where snow falls from November through April, and reality is open to interpretation. In her tales, you’ll meet a determined frog, clever seamstress, wise handyman, stolen wife and more unlikely heroes who face daunting trials. Some succeed; others do not. In the process, they are all transformed.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Aunt Truly’s Tales: Enchantment for Story Lovers by Laura McHale Holland is a wonderful collection of ten adult short stories that was a pleasure to read. I love short stories, especially to read at night when you don’t want to stay up half the night reading. I read these, one or two at a time and truly enjoyed them. Aunt Truly is a character in herself. She may be old, but she’s independent and does what she wants. You will love all of the whimsical characters in Aunt Truly’s Tales.  And you are in for a good old dose of fun while reading them.

I like that Laura McHale Holland describes her book as “a dash of whimsy and a dose of wisdom for our times.” Because that’s what it felt like to me. The homey feeling in Aunt Truley’s home is sure to be a trip not soon forgotten. I encourage you to pick up this short story book for many hours of enjoyment. This one is a Four Stars for me.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Kayla

Kayla: A Modern-Day Princess: Dishes, Dancing, and Dreams by Deedee Cummings is the second book in A Modern Day Princess Series. This time Kayla meets a new friend when she spots a boy in the tree in her families yard. Trying to make him come down, he finally does and she finds he is her neighbor but she also finds out more about why he moved in next door. Tommy volunteers to help Kayla do the dishes and they make fast friends.

This is another sweet book by Dee Cummings that I really enjoyed. This one teaches children that it is ok to be different, but most importantly even though things are not going your way, you can dream and do what you want to do. Kayla and Tommy are such cute characters which were created by Illustrator Charlene Mosley. I love the beautiful vibrant colors and the unique characters throughout the book. Mosley does a fantastic job of capturig the moment on each page of this story. This book would make an excellent choice for your child’s library. This book is a Four Star for me.
