Smoke-Screen-672x1024One father was murdered, and another convicted of his death. All because their children fell in love.

Nate Beckett has spent his life fighting wildfires instead of the lies and rumors that drove him from his Colorado home town. His mother begs him to come to Carlisle now that his father has been released from prison, but it isn’t until he’s sidelined by an injury that he’s forced to return and face his past. But that means facing Brenna too.

Fourteen years ago, Nate was in love with the preacher’s daughter. When Pastor Strickland discovered Brenna had defied him to sneak out with Nate, the fight between Strickland and Nate’s drunken dad was loud—and very public. Strickland was found murdered later that night, and everyone accused Roy Beckett. When the church burned down, people assumed it was Nate getting even for his father’s conviction. He let the rumors fly and left Carlisle without looking back.

Now, Brenna is stunned to learn that the man convicted of murdering her father has been pardoned. The events of that night set her life on a bad course, and she’s dealing with a brutal custody battle with her ex and his new wife where he’s using lies and his family’s money to sway the judge. She’s barely hanging on, and she’s turned to alcohol to cope. Shame and fear consume her.

As they deal with the present—including new information about that fateful night and a wildfire that’s threatening their town—their past keeps igniting. Nate is the steady force Brenna has so desperately needed. But she’ll have to learn to trust him again first.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Being back in his home town in Colorado, Nate wasn’t especially excited about how the town folks would receive him. But with Brenna living across the street from his brother, with whom he was staying, he was about to find out. Issues between the two families have been strained for many years, with no show for then to ever be any different.

I love, love this story! Terri Blackstock is one of my favorite authors, her books exceed all of my expectations for a book! Smoke Screen is so professionally written, the characters seem like old friends, the plot is so realistic, it’s like a story that can be found in anyone’s town or community. Nate and Brenna quickly stole a piece of my heart, because of the past they could have had, if not for their fathers. Their supporting characters were honest, but sometimes a little difficult on the two.

I was quite intrigued about Nate’s job of being a smokejumper. And I enjoyed the detailed information about the job included in the story. Ms. Blackstock did well in her research. And as far as Brenna, her situation is too familiar these days. My heart hurt for her so much. And her ex was a good for nothing conceded jerk, to put it nicely. With this part of the story, as well as how people acted was very well thought out and described in vivid detail as well.

There really wasn’t anything I didn’t like about this book. The mystery behind who the real guilty person was, the misunderstanding of the people, and the romance added in was enough for a really amazing story and Terri Blackstock did not disappoint at the end either. She gave her readers an Heartwarming ending that will sure stick with me for a while.

Excerpt from Smoke Screen

I woke up in a blinding bright room, my clothes off and something clamped to my face. I tried to reach it, but I couldn’t bend my right arm, and my hand stung. An IV was taped to my other hand, but I moved carefully and touched the thing over my face.

An oxygen mask. I tried to sit up. “What happened?”

T-bird came to my bedside, a sheen of smoky sweat still soiling his face. “Nate, lie back, man.”

“The fire,” I said. “Need to get back. My men.”

“They’re still there. Making progress. But you’re not going anywhere near a fire for a month or so.”

I took the mask off and coughed a little, but managed to catch my breath. “A month?”

“Yep. Second degree burns on 20 percent of your body. Some of the burns are deep.”

It came back to me, the event that had gotten me here.

“The family. Were they injured?”

“Not a scratch or burn. Turns out it was a U.S. Senator from Kansas. He says you’re a hero.”

“You know I had no choice. They were in the path—”

“Take the praise where you can get it, man. We don’t get that much.”

I looked at my right side. My right arm was bandaged, and so was my side and down my right leg to the point where my boots had stopped the flames. Second degree wasn’t so bad, I told myself. Third degree would have been brutal. I’d be able to leave the hospital soon. I’d heal.

“I won’t need a month,” I said.

“Yes, you will. They can’t let you go back. Doctor’s orders. You’re grounded until he releases you.”

I managed to sit up, but it was a bad idea. The burns pulling on my skin reminded me why I shouldn’t. “I can’t be grounded during fire season. Are you crazy? I need to be there. You don’t have enough men as it is.”

“Sorry, Nate. It is what it is. Why don’t you go home to Carlisle for a while? Take it easy.”

Go home? Pop had just been pardoned, and he and my mom were trying to navigate the reunion. Though she would love to have me home, I didn’t know if I was up to it. My father could be challenging, and fourteen years of prison hadn’t done him any favors.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

When can driver Finn Parrish drove into the driveway of his next client, he sure didn’t know how much his life would change. Neither did he believe he would be doing so much extra for this client. Miss Callie was a special lady, but she needed family to take care of her. Family, Finn finds out it one granddaughter trying to work her job and take care of her grandmother too. And this time, calling a cab to take her grandmother to her Drs appointment was the only options.

I love this sweet story. Miss Callie may be old, but she knew exactly what she wanted. Her medicinal condition just keeps her from doing things on her own, so she decides the cab driver is the person to drive her to where she needs to go!

These amazing characters will capture your heart from the beginning. Miss Callie made the story fun and interesting. And I could tell Finn was a special guy from the beginning by the way he respected her. This was a different Christmas story, at least it was for me, but it is an amazing and wonderful story. A story that will warm your hearts for sure during this Christmas season.

Catching Christmas by Terri Blackstock

chasing christmas

Book Description

The first Christmas story from New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Terri Blackstock.

“The feel-good Christmas book of the year. Blackstock’s tale of love and redemption wrapped in a holiday bow will leave you smiling. Don’t miss Catching Christmas.” —New York Times bestselling author Rachel Hauck

This Year, Christmas Comes Just in Time

As a first-year law associate, Sydney Batson knows she will be updating her resume by New Year’s if she loses her current court case. So when her grandmother gets inexplicably ill while she’s in court, Sydney arranges for a cab to get her to the clinic.

The last thing cab driver Finn Parrish wants is to be saddled with a wheelchair-bound old lady with dementia. But because Miss Callie reminds him of his own mother, whom he failed miserably in her last days, he can’t say no when she keeps calling him for rides. Once a successful gourmet chef, Finn’s biggest concern now is making his rent, but half the time Callie doesn’t remember to pay him. And as she starts to feel better, she leads him on wild goose chases to find a Christmas date for her granddaughter.

When Finn meets Sydney, he’s quite sure that she’s never needed help finding a date. Does Miss Callie have an ulterior motive, or is this just a mission driven by delusions? He’s willing to do whatever he can to help fulfill Callie’s Christmas wish. He just never expected to be a vital part of it.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Sydney Batson thinks she is doing what is best when she calls a cab to take her grandmother to her Drs appointment. But cab driver Finn Parrish didn’t think much of having to do things a cab driver shouldn’t have to do, which was taking a customer inside the Drs office and check her in. Just what kind of granddaughter was Sydney anyway.

I love Miss Callie! She made this story so fun and interesting. And I could tell Finn was a special guy from the beginning. Though he really didn’t want to keep taking Miss Callie around, he did it anyway with much respect for her. Terri Blackstock does an amazing job of creating characters that develop so well throughout the story. Characters that will weave their way into your hearts and stay there. This was a different Christmas, at least it was for me, but it is an amazing and wonderful story. A story that will warm your hearts for sure during this Christmas season.

“Terri Blackstock’s latest offering touches tender places with its quirky characters and stirring plot. Catching Christmas explores what happens when the paths of a disenchanted Taxi driver collide with that of an overworked attorney. Blackstock weaves a compelling, romantic tale that is sure to get you into the Christmas spirit!” —Denise Hunter, bestselling author of Honeysuckle Dreams

“Blackstock’s Catching Christmas is not your average romance. Darling and laugh-out-loud cute, it makes the reader think about the important things in life. I read it in one gulp and wished there was more. Highly recommended!” —Colleen Coble, USA TODAY bestselling author of the Hope Beach series and the Lavender Tides series

Book Description

“If I Live is a grabber from page one, delivering an exhilarating mix of chase, mystery, and spiritual truth. Longtime Blackstock fans will be delighted, and new Blackstock fans will be made.” —James Scott Bell, bestselling author of the Mike Romeo thrillers

THE HUNT IS ALMOST OVER.

Dylan Roberts, the investigator who once hunted her, is now her only hope. Terrifying attempts on Dylan’s life could force Casey out of hiding. The clock is ticking on both their lives, but exposing the real killers is more complicated than they knew. Amassing the evidence to convict their enemies draws Dylan and Casey together, but their relationship has consequences. Will one life have to be sacrificed to protect the other?

With If I Live, Terri Blackstock takes us on one more heart-stopping chase in the sensational conclusion to the If I Run series.

“Crisp dialogue and unexpected twists make this compulsive reading. . .” —Publishers Weekly review of If I Run

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I’ve been waiting to read this last book in this series. Casey has been running for a long time, through a lot of disguises, will it ever end for her? And if so how?
If I Live is a fast paced thriller that you will not want to put down. I only put this book down when I absolutely had to, because I had to find out what was happening. The as in the other books, the characters are amazing, I feel like I know them in real life by now. The author has a unique way of describing each scene in the book with vivid descriptions that will have you on the edge of your seats. One thing I will say is that it is better if you read all three of these books in the series  in order, because you get the plot of the story so much better. If you are looking for a story full of action, this one is for you!

If I Run By Terri Blackstock from Zondervan

If I Run
By Terri Blackstock

CASEY KNOWS THE TRUTH. BUT IT WON’T SET HER FREE.

Casey Cox’s DNA is all over the crime scene. There’s no use talking to police; they’ve failed her abysmally before. She has to flee before she’s arrested . . . or worse. The truth doesn’t matter anymore.

But what is the truth? That’s the question haunting Dylan Roberts, the war-weary veteran hired to find Casey. PTSD has marked him damaged goods, but bringing Casey back can redeem him. Though the crime scene seems to tell the whole story, details of the murder aren’t adding up.

Casey Cox doesn’t fit the profile of a killer. But are Dylan’s skewed perceptions keeping him from being objective? If she isn’t guilty, why did she run?

Unraveling her past and the evidence that condemns her will take more time than he has, but as Dylan’s damaged soul intersects with hers, he is faced with two choices: the girl who occupies his every thought is a psychopathic killer . . . or a selfless hero. And the truth could be the most deadly weapon yet.

MY THOUGTHS ON THIS BOOK

Casey Cox only wants to do the right things, find her father’s killer. But her life falls apart when she finds her good friend murdered, and with her DNA being all over the place, she has no option but to run. Dylan Roberts, the PI hired to find Casey doesn’t think she is guilty of murder, the evidence just doesn’t show it.

If I Run is another fast pace thriller from one of my very favorite authors, Terri Blackstock. It starts our with Casey finding her good friend Brent murdered in his home. Knowing why Brent was murdered, and her blood all over everything, Casey’s only choice is to take off. Casey was a fantastic leading character, with all of her twists and turns trying to stay under the radar, I never knew what was coming next! Casey was such a caring person, she cared more for helping others than she did herself, even if she did put herself in the spotlight. I really enjoyed this story, and I read it through without putting it down.

However, the ending just almost ruined it for me. It left so many loose ends, I felt as though I was hanging from a cliff when I read that last sentence. I sure hope there is a book two, I will be very disappointed if it is not. Can’t wait to find out about another book in this series!

About the Authorterri blackstock
Terri Blackstock is a New York Times best-seller, with over six million copies sold worldwide. She is the winner of two Carol Awards, a Christian Retailers Choice Award, and a Romantic Times Book Reviews Career Achievement Award, among others. She has had over twenty-five years of success as a novelist. Terri spent the first twelve years of her life traveling in an Air Force family. She lived in nine states and attended the first four years of school in The Netherlands. Because she was a perpetual “new kid,” her imagination became her closest friend. That, she believes, was the biggest factor in her becoming a novelist. She sold her first novel at the age of twenty-five, and has had a successful career ever since.

Recent books include her acclaimed Intervention Series (Intervention, Vicious Cycle, and Downfall). Other recent favorites include Shadow in Serenity, Predator and Double Minds, and the Restoration Series, the Newpointe 911 Series, the Cape Refuge Series, and the SunCoast Chronicles series.

In 1994 Terri was writing romance novels under two pseudonyms for publishers such as HarperCollins, Harlequin, Dell and Silhouette, when a spiritual awakening prompted her to switch gears. At the time, she was reading more suspense than romance, and felt drawn to write thrillers about ordinary people in grave danger. Her newly awakened faith wove its way into the tapestry of her suspense novels, offering hope instead of despair. Her goal is to entertain with page-turning plots, while challenging her readers to think and grow. She hopes to remind them that they’re not alone, and that their trials have a purpose.

Terri has appeared on national television programs such as “The 700 Club” and “Home Life,” and has been a guest on numerous radio programs across the country. The story of her personal journey appears in books such as Touched By the Savior by Mike Yorkey, True Stories of Answered Prayer by Mike Nappa, Faces of Faith by John Hanna, and I Saw Him In Your Eyes by Ace Collins.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Terri Blackstock is just awesome, and her new book, Twisted Innocence just proves it! I loved this story. It starts out with Holly, trying to settle down and make a life for herself and her new baby. Then she finds out that the father of her baby is wanted for murder. The only thing she wants from her daughters father is for him to be as far away from the two of them as he can get. But taking the law into her own hands gets her and her baby kidnapped and on the run.

Though this story will keep you the edge of your seats because of the intense suspense, it is also very heartwarming. A precious little baby can do that to a person. I have to admit, I was scared for Holly and her daughter, and then for all of the main characters because of the danger their lives were in. And when I thought I had it all figured out, another twist happened and the story took another drastic turn. Can this story have a pleasant ending, or will everyone involved end up dead? Find out when you read this latest thriller from Terri Blackstock!

Distortion by Terri Blackstock from Litfuse and win a Kindle

Distortion

by Terri Blackstock

DistortionJuliet Cole’s life has been dismantled by the murder of her husband. She doesn’t know who—or what—to trust when everything she has believed to be true about her marriage has been a lie.

A husband’s lies can have deadly consequences.

When Juliet Cole’s husband of fifteen years is murdered before her eyes, she thinks it was a random shooting. Devastated and traumatized, she answers hours of questioning, then returns home to break the tragic news to her boys. But a threatening voicemail takes this from a random shooting to a planned, deliberate attack.

Juliet realizes that she and her children are in danger too, unless she meets the killers’ demands. But as she and her sisters untangle the clues, her husband’s dark secrets come to light. The more she learns, the more of her life is dismantled. Was her husband an innocent victim or a hardened criminal?

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

When Juliet Cole’s husband was shot down before her eyes, she wasn’t expecting the dramatic change her life would take because of his death. It seemed that ever hour, and sometimes every minute she was finding out some new and different about him, and none of it was good! She now feared for the life of herself and her two sons because it was clear that none of them were safe. All thanks to Bob’s secret and deceptive life.

When a book has ‘Terri Blackstock’ as the author, I know I am in for a real treat! And Distortion was certainly not a disappointment. This second book in the Moonlighters Series was even better than the first book, and the good thing is that even thought it is a second book in the series, it can easily be read as a stand-a-lone!

This was an awesome read, full of secrets and deception, thrills and excitement, and love and togetherness of family. I enjoyed how Juliet’s family, Michael and Max joined together to help her in everyway possible. And I was kind of excepting a dirty cop somewhere, but I didn’t figure that one out until almost the end. There are so many twists and turns taking place in this story that I was so nervous, and the more nervous I got, the faster I read! This is why Terri Blackstock is on my favorite author’s list, and I have all of her books!

Book Description

Cathy Cramer is a former lawyer and investigative blogger who writes commentary on local homicides. When she finds a threatening note warning her that she’s about to experience the same kind of judgment and speculation that she dishes out in her blog, Cathy writes it off as mischief … until her brother is caught in the middle of a murder investigation—the victim is his ex-wife. As her brother is tried and convicted in the media, and bloggers and commentators like her have a field day, Cathy wonders if she should have taken the threat more seriously.

Cathy and her two sisters, Holly and Juliet, moonlight as part-time private investigators, working to solve their brother’s ex-wife’s murder. Juliet, a stay-at-home mom of two boys, and Holly, a scattered ne’er-do-well who drives a taxi, put aside their fear and lack of confidence to learn the art of investigation.

But will it be too late to save their brother from a murder conviction, or his five-year-old son who’s the killer’s next target?

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

The evidence was so strong against Jay that he has no hope of anyone believing is bazaar story that a clown leaves his ex-wife’s house just before he goes in and fines her dead. But Jay’s three sisters know Jay not murder his ex and they are not happy with the police investigation, so they take the investigation into their own hands. Since sister Cathy is a former lawyer and also has a blog that she writes about high profile cases, they have enough experience to pull it off.

I always love a Terri Blackstock book, and I was thrilled to read Truth Stained Lies, her newest novel. I enjoyed this book from the first page to the last. On thing that was so interesting for me is the way the sisters strike out to protect their brother, the scenes of them moonlighting together, plotting with the evidence they have, and just the entire investigation they were doing was intriguing and I just wanted to keep reading! There were many twists and turns, and it took me a while to figure out whoddidit. This was just an all around good, clean, enjoyable read that I highly recommend. If you are a fan of suspense/thrillers, this book is for you!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

terriblackstockphoto1[1]Terri Blackstock is a New York Times best-seller, with over six million copies sold worldwide.

Her latest series is the acclaimed, award-winning Intervention Series (Intervention, Vicious Cycle, Downfall). Other reader favorites include her books Predator and Double Minds, as well as the Restoration Series, the Newpointe 911 Series, the Cape Refuge Series, and the SunCoast Chronicles series.

 Synopsis:

Despite Emily Covington’s sobriety, she can’t escape her past. Her years of active drug addiction have made her the scapegoat for everything, including a murder. Now she has to identify the real killer to clear her name and protect her family. From the explosive first pages, Terri Blackstock rockets the suspense level to new heights in Downfall, the third book in the bestselling, award-winning Intervention Series.

Description of the book

Emily Covington has turned her life around after a drug addiction, but her family still has trouble trusting her. Though Emily has committed herself to a year-long treatment program and has been sober for almost a year beyond that, even her mother walks on eggshells around her, fearing she’ll relapse. After her behavior during her drug years, Emily realizes she has a lot to prove.

When police discover a homemade bomb under Emily’s car, and she then learns the wife of one of her friends was murdered that same morning, she knows things are deadly serious.

But who wants Emily dead? And why?

A conversation she had with two men, an Alfred Hitchcock movie, and a plan for a double murder all conspire for one explosive ride … and Emily is the only one who can identify the killer and save the life of the next potential victim.

As she frantically works to solve this ever more complicated puzzle, Emily finds herself playing right into the killer’s hands.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Terri Blackstock is such a gifted writer. I love everything she writes including “Downfall.” I appreciate that Terri deals with tough issues that people deal with everyday, and always finds a workable solution, including trusting the Lord with their lives and letting Him work in and through them.

Emily Covington wants to prove herself to everyone, assuring them that her life with drugs is over. But when things start happening to her, and since it looks like someone wants her dead, her family still had doubts about Emily’s past life.

In “Downfall,’ Terri Blackstock writes another suspense/ thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seats until the very last word. When I put the book down, all I could think about was what was gonna happen, so I would pick it back up. From the people we loved to the villains we could do without, the character were so real and true to life it was like reading something in the newspaper. And with an intriguing plot that had the many twist and turns, it was difficult to solve the mystery until it was all revealed in the end.

If you’ve never read a Terri Blackstock book, you are missing a real treat. And for those fans who always come back for more of her stories, you will love the words penned in Terri’s new book, “Downfall.”

This book was provided by Zondervan Publishers through The Suspense Zone. I appreciate Susan and all of the work she does to promote Edgy Christian Fiction and thrillers like “Downfall.” I was not expected or required to write a positive review. The opinions in this review are mine only.
