Book Title:  A Lion in the Grass (The Raymond Hatcher Stories/Book One) by Mark Zvonkovic
Category:  Adult Fiction (18+),  333 pages
Genre: Literary Fiction
Publisher:  Dos Perro Press
Release date:  August 2020

Book Description:

Set over the course of six decades, A Lion in the Grass documents the despair and hope of a spy who suffers the murder of friends and enjoys the success of mentoring protégés.

The story is told through alternative viewpoints of Raymond, his protégés, and the French villain. The novel digs deeply into questions of love, self-doubt and hatred, all foisted upon Raymond during a career from which, he discovers, it is impossible to retire.

MY THOUGHTS ON A LION IN THE GRASS

A Lion in the Grass (The Raymond Hatcher Stories/Book One) by Mark Zvonkovic is an interesting story that follows a spy, Raymond Hatcher over the course of six decades. The story is told from mostly Raymond’s point of view, but some of the other characters chimes in to tell their viewpoints as well. I like Raymond but sometimes I had a little problem connecting with him, but maybe because he was a spy and didn’t want anyone connecting with him.

The details of each scene throughout makes the story flow so much better, and the character’s are so realistic, especially when the story is dealing with real life issues. With a lot of the book I felt like I was right there feeling the story with the characters.The writing is phenomenal and I enjoyed the authors writing style, I just wasnt expecting the language that could have been calmed down a little or left out altogether. But that’s my point of view. This is a really good story and I look forward to reading the other two books in this series. A Lion in the Grass is a very well written spy story, and if spy stories is your thing, you will enjoy this one.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

SHINING BRIGHTLY by Howard Brown

SHINING BRIGHTLY

by Howard Brown

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Memoir
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

In Shining Brightly, Silicon Valley pioneer, cancer survivor and interfaith peacemaker Howard Brown shares keys to resilience for successful entrepreneurs, patient advocates and community leaders. He shows us how to reach out through our families, our communities and around the world to form truly supportive connections and friendships. From Howard’s career as a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, to his conquering metastatic stage IV cancer twice, to his compassionate outreach as a peacemaker, to his love of sports—this ultimately is not one man’s story. Shining Brightly is a story shared by countless men and women—and may wind up changing your life as well. With each true story he tells in the pages, Howard invites readers to picture how they might join him in shining more light in our world.

Excerpt Four:

When I landed in Silicon Valley in 1997, people told me: “The math is crazy here. Two plus two equals 200.” As a top salesman for more than a decade, I was used to the roller-coaster ride of chasing big deals. I’d had my share of setbacks as well as breathtaking commission checks when great deals finally were signed. But moving into Silicon Valley was climbing to a whole new altitude. At the same time, I also was evolving from strictly sales to becoming a serial entrepreneur, a life whose ups and downs are less like a roller coaster and more like scaling the Himalayas. Silicon Valley in the 1990s was as disorienting as Alice in Wonderland or The Matrix.

With each passing quarter of the year, old assumptions were turned head over heels. I had come of age when aspiring salespeople, executives and entrepreneurs could develop their skills along comfortable on ramps like NCR’s lavish training programs. There was no Sugar Camp with the implicit promise of a successful career. In Silicon Valley, it was learn fast, move fast and earn faster. Everything was new and speculative. There was no safety net. We were scrambling to find toe holds in startups operating out of borrowed garages, cramped cubicles, dusty attics—wherever we could pitch our tents. We were competing for seats at flimsy card tables where people were hunched over their plans to build the future. I was among thousands who were hooked on this adrenaline rush. I sweated toward my first big success in a claustrophobic basement startup that was overwhelmed with the odor of frying onions every day as the vents of the next-door Mexican restaurant turned on for the lunch and dinner rush.

When people first told me about Silicon Valley’s crazy math, I laughed at the exaggeration. When I landed in the scrambler myself, I realized they weren’t kidding. Within just a few years, Lisa and I were able to buy a beautiful, newly built home and increase our charitable giving significantly with our “found money.” I earned big money via large commissions and stock options originally worth pennies working around the clock to build and sell a revolutionary product in the music industry that wound up failing not too long after it went public. We were ahead of our time in that basement, so our concept quickly fizzled. But in Silicon Valley? We still took money home. And, as surprising as it may seem, most of the investors weren’t complaining. For the most part, they were clear-eyed venture capitalists pouring money into startups that sounded promising, hoping to strike gold on just a few of the many bets they were placing.

What about all that money? That’s the first myth about the heyday of Silicon Valley that I need to bust. Many of us weren’t in this for the money. Sure, we all hoped to strike it rich and make a better life for ourselves. Some of us made big money, often for an all-too-brief time. I know that I personally wanted to become a philanthropist and give back. But the money was not what drove us to work insane hours and to nearly abandon our families along the way. No, what drove us through each day was the heady dream of reinventing the way the world works—the way we all connect and move and interrelate—the way we do our work and the way we enjoy ourselves after work. We were the generation that firmly believed we could make the most fantastic tech dreams come true. And, if that sounds like the plot for a sci-fi movie, then so be it.

Book Series Description:
A GIRL LIKE YOU: Beautiful Henrietta Von Harmon works as a 26 girl at a corner bar, Poor Pete’s, on Chicago’s northwest side. It’s 1935, but things still aren’t looking up since the big crash and her father’s subsequent suicide. Left to care for her antagonistic mother and seven younger siblings, Henrietta is persuaded to take a job as a taxi dancer at a local dance hall. Henrietta is just beginning to enjoy herself, dancing with men for ten cents a dance, when the floor matron suddenly turns up murdered. The aloof Inspector Clive Howard then appears on the scene, and Henrietta unwittingly finds herself involved in unraveling the mystery when she agrees to go undercover for him in a burlesque theater where he believes the killer lurks.

Even as Henrietta is plunged into Chicago’s grittier underworld, she struggles to still play the mother “hen” to her younger siblings and even to the pesky neighborhood boy, Stanley, who believes himself in love with her and continues to pop up in the most unlikely places, determined, ironically, to keep Henrietta safe, even from the Inspector if needs be. Despite his efforts, however, and his penchant for messing up the Inspector’s investigation, the lovely Henrietta and the impenetrable Inspector find themselves drawn to each other in most unsuitable ways.

A RING OF TRUTH: In this second book of the series, Henrietta and Clive delightfully rewrite Pride and Prejudice―with a hint of mystery!

Newly engaged, Clive and Henrietta now begin the difficult task of meeting each other’s family. “Difficult” because Clive has neglected to tell Henrietta that he is in fact the heir to the Howard estate and fortune, and Henrietta has just discovered that her mother has been hiding secrets about her past as well. When Clive brings Henrietta to the family estate to meet his parents, they are less than enthused about his impoverished intended. Left alone in this extravagant new world when Clive returns to the city, Henrietta finds herself more at home with the servants than his family, much to the disapproval of Mrs. Howard―and soon gets caught up in the disappearance of an elderly servant’s ring, not realizing that in doing so she has become part of a bigger, darker plot.
As Clive and Henrietta attempt to discover the truth in the two very different worlds unraveling around them, they both begin to wonder: Are they meant for each other after all?

A PROMISE GIVEN: This third book in the Henrietta and Inspector Howard series provides a delightful romp through the English countryside and back.

Anxious to be married, Henrietta and Clive push forward with their wedding plans despite their family differences, made worse now by Oldrich Exley’s attempts to control the Von Harmons. When the long-awaited wedding day arrives, there is more unfolding than just Clive and Henrietta’s vows of love. Stanley and Elsie’s relationship is sorely tested by the presence of the dashing Lieutenant Harrison Barnes-Smith and by Henrietta’s friend Rose―a situation that grows increasingly dark and confused as time goes on.

As Clive and Henrietta begin their honeymoon at Castle Linley, the Howards’ ancestral estate in England, they encounter a whole new host of characters, including the eccentric Lord and Lady Linley and Clive’s mysterious cousin, Wallace. When a man is murdered in the village on the night of a house party at the Castle, Wallace comes under suspicion―and Clive and Henrietta are reluctantly drawn into the case, despite Clive’s anxiety at involving his new bride and Henrietta’s distracting news from home.
Delicately attempting to work together for the first time, Clive and Henrietta set out to prove Wallace’s innocence, uncovering as they do so some rather shocking truths that will shake the Linley name and estate forever.

A VEIL REMOVED: Murder is never far from this sexy couple . . . even during the holidays!

Their honeymoon abruptly ended by the untimely death of Alcott Howard, Clive and Henrietta return to Highbury, where Clive discovers all is not as it should be. Increasingly convinced that his father’s death was not an accident, Clive launches his own investigation, despite his mother’s belief that he has become “mentally disturbed” with grief. Henrietta eventually joins forces with Clive on their first real case, which becomes darker―and deadlier―than they imagined as they get closer to the truth behind Alcott’s troubled affairs.

Meanwhile, Henrietta’s sister, Elsie, begins, at Henrietta’s orchestration, to take classes at a women’s college―an attempt to evade her troubles and prevent any further romantic temptations. When she meets a bookish German custodian at the school, however, he challenges her to think for herself . . . even as she discovers some shocking secrets about his past life.

A CHILD LOST: A spiritualist, an insane asylum, a lost little girl . . .

When Clive, anxious to distract a depressed Henrietta, begs Sergeant Frank Davis for a case, he is assigned to investigating a seemingly boring affair: a spiritualist woman operating in an abandoned schoolhouse on the edge of town who is suspected of robbing people of their valuables. What begins as an open and shut case becomes more complicated, however, when Henrietta―much to Clive’s dismay―begins to believe the spiritualist’s strange ramblings.
Meanwhile, Elsie begs Clive and Henrietta to help her and the object of her budding love, Gunther, locate the whereabouts of one Liesel Klinkhammer, the German woman Gunther has traveled to America to find and the mother of the little girl, Anna, whom he has brought along with him. The search leads them to Dunning Asylum, where they discover some terrible truths about Liesel. When the child, Anna, is herself mistakenly admitted to the asylum after an epileptic fit, Clive and Henrietta return to Dunning to retrieve her. This time, however, Henrietta begins to suspect that something darker may be happening. When Clive doesn’t believe her, she decides to take matters into her own hands . . . with horrifying results.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

#iReadBookTours

MILES AND THE SOLDIER (An Acre Story, Book 2) by G.J. Kemp follows Miles’s journey through the eastern lands in this fantasy series. I have really enjoyed these book and I hope to read more from this author in the future.

Miles will never walk again because of the sword of the Lady cuts deeply into his back. The paralysis is so bad, but Miles is determined to prove everyone wrong tries to work diligently on working his legs to do that. But we will see who is right.

Kemp does another amazing job writing this second book. I definitely advise reading book one and the to novellas before reading this one. In MILES AND THE SOLDIER, the characters were spot on. I enjoyed the way they developed so well throughout the story. Kemp does an amazing job writing the characters, as well as the descriptive writing throughout the book. Each scene was well described so it makes it easier to understand and stay with the story. It was fun visiting with the friends we met in the first books, as well as meeting new friends here in this one. There are a lot of characters to get to know, but the was Kemp writes them into the story makes it easy to get to know them and keep them all straight. Not usually a big fan of fantasy, I sure did enjoy this series. One thing that drew me in are the unique book covers and I especially love this cover to book two. There is so much to this book, you need to read it for yourself. If you love fantasy, this entire series will be great for you.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

#iReadBookTours

PETRA AND THE SEWER RATS is the second Novella in An Acre Story Series. This one is Book 1.2 by G.J. Kemp. This one can be read any time in the story but I enjoyed reading them in order. Petra and the Sewer Rats is a good book to introduce the rats(orphans) and get to know Petra and her personality more. I really like Petra’s character. She came from money, she is so privileged she can get what she wants, anytime. But she chooses to help out these orphans the town calls sewer rats. Will she loose her father over this? What will the town think?

I so much enjoyed this book. And it was fun watching these characters grow as the story unfolds. I have a high respect for Petra watching her do the work she is called to do. The storyline was new to me. I had never heard orphans called sewer rats, but I don’t read a lot of fantasy either. I am glad I chose this series of fantasy books to review.

An Amish Christmas Star

An Amish Christmas Star by Charlotte Hubbard

by Charlotte Hubbard

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Inspirational Romance (Amish)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

The crisp fragrance of pine trees and the warm spice of fresh cookies aren’t the only blessings that Christmas brings, and no one knows more about happy homecomings than three couples who are celebrating the greatest gift of all . . .

STAR OF WONDER

by

Charlotte Hubbard

When Raymond Overholt comes to Promise Lodge, hoping to sell the barnboard signs he’s painted with stars and Christmas messages, spirited young Mennonite Lizzie Zehr is intrigued. But any courtship between them will face fierce opposition from the bishop of Raymond’s Old Order community—unless someone can convince him that at the heart of faith lies love . . .

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
I am reviewing Charlotte Hubbard’s Story in this Christmas book, An Amish Christmas Star. Charlotte Hubbard’s story is Star of Wonder. This is Raymond and Lizzie’s story. They meet in the Promise Lodge bulk store where Lizzie really makes herself feel kind of strange when she goes overboard trying to get Dale, the store owner to hire Raymond to work in the store. Earlier Lizzie had spilled some candy while going overboard looking at Raymond. I think she has a problem. I really didn’t like Lizzie’s character at first, with her being so forward with Raymond. It was a bit embarrassing, to say the least.
But as it goes Raymond does work in the store. But that’s not all. There is a lot happening in the story, with the two living at Promise Lodge and working in the bulk store. There was much discussion about the Lodge and the people there, about the Bishop and his work there. And if I tell you more, it will ruin it for you. And I just don’t like doing that! This story is much to good for that. I encourage you to go grab a copy of An Amish Christmas Star and read Ms. Hubbard’s story, Star of Wonder. I also encourage you to check out the rest of the Promise Lodge Books written by Hubbard. They are a little different, Amish stories with a nice twist, and you will love this series.
Also in the An Amish Christmas Star, author’s Shellie Shepard Gray and Rosalind Lauer also have stories in this book. I will be writing reviews of these later this week and will link them all together so you can read them all. For now, check out the book and read Ms. Hubbard’s story.
A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
Excerpt:
With the girl’s laughter still dancing in his head, Raymond Overholt tried to refocus his thoughts. If he didn’t convince Mr. Kraybill to sell his handmade plaques, his past several weeks of work would be for nothing. He’d have to return home to Coldstream with his tail between his legs, and face a long, dreary lifetime of milking his dat’s cows. Running a dairy was honest, necessary work but Raymond didn’t enjoy spending his early mornings and late afternoons in a smelly barn disinfecting udders any more than the Holsteins liked having him around. Worse yet, if he overslept, his older brothers did the milking and left the hosing down and mucking out of the stalls for him.
“If your customers like these plaques, I can make more,” he assured the steely-haired storekeeper. “I—I really appreciate having the chance to sell them here in your new store. Our bulk market in Coldstream is dim and overcrowded with merchandise, and even if the owner there had display space, he wants nothing to do with artwork. It’s that Old Order thing.”
Mr. Kraybill smiled knowingly. “Jah, Amish stores don’t usually carry much that appears English even if they have a lot of customers come in from outside their community to shop,” he acknowledged. “But your plaques carry a solid Christmas message—‘Wise men still follow His star’ and the lyrics to ‘We Three Kings’ are meaningful reminders about following our Lord’s holy light. Thanksgiving always kicks off the Christmas buying season, so we’ll give it a shot, Raymond.”
He hoped his grateful grin didn’t appear too adolescent—or desperate. Raymond gazed around the store, where a gal in a pleated Amish kapp was stocking shelves in the rear. A few early shoppers were pushing carts into the grocery section. “If you need some extra hands when things get busy these next few weeks, I’d be happy to help, sir,” he offered. “I’ve not worked in a store, but I’m gut at tallying sums and I’m a quick learner.”
“I’ll keep it in mind,” Kraybill said with a nod.
Raymond heard probably not in the storekeeper’s words, but he’d dealt with people’s dismissals before. If he’d dressed in dark broadfall pants with a plain shirt and suspenders—and if he’d chosen glasses with conservative frames—Kraybill might’ve taken him more seriously. But until he had no other choice than to submit to Old Order ways and join the church, Raymond was determined to wear clothing he liked.
“I’ll be back in a few days to see how my signs are selling,” he said. “Denki for giving me a chance.”
MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
#ireadbooktours
Inside Your Heaven: Inspiring Stories of the After Life by April Natale is a book that Ms. Natale has written about what she believes about our loved ones and friends who have passed away, and what she believes about contacting those people we have lost. Natale has some interesting stories about people she has connected with who have left this world. I know there are a many different beliefs about this subject, so it’s really interesting to see others opinions. And I am not here to downplay anyone’s opinions or belief’s, we all certainly have the right to what we believe. For me, I chose to read and review Inside Your Heaven: Inspiring Stories of the After Life by April Natale, because I wanted to see what the author had to say about the afterlife. I have always been taught, and still believe that according to what the Bible says, this is something we should not practice, so therefore I don’t. But this really doesn’t have anything to do about the author’s writing ability writing this book. I think Natale does a really nice job writing this book so that readers can understand what she is trying to relay to her readers. And I know a lot of research was put into this book, as well the knowledge of this author over the years as a nurse and then the years of being a Psychic medium. If this is a subject you are curious about or want to know more about, this would be a great book for you to read. Natale has a wealth of information here in this book.
A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
MY REVIEW OF ROCKY RED-A LITTLE ANT WITH A BIG DREAM
#iReadBookTours
Queenie was yelling at Rocky Red to stop playing and help lift a whopper hamburger someone left, but Red wanted to continue practicing with his Lucky Bug Band. But Queenie was boss so Red said ok he would help. But Red ran across a few issues, and what he thought would be a disaster turned into the most fun he had every had. Join Rocky Red and his friends and find out where Rock Red got his name. And find out the surprising ending to this story.
Cheryl DaVeiga and Dave Gibson is a book full of ants. But these ants are not pesky ants we have at picnics. These are fun ants and friends that love music. I think they make a pretty good band as they have fun playing together. And Remesh Ram does a superb job creating and painting the animals and the background. I love the band instruments and the cute little players. I play the piano so I love that tiny piano you created. The words of the story and the pictures created by this illustrator fit together perfect! Authors Cheryl DaVeiga and Dave Gibson and Remesh Ram work very well together. Can’t wait for more of their creations. Parents, your child will love this book read to them and it’s perfect for their library. Teachers, every elementry classroom and library should have a copy of this book in their library.
If you look at the picture above my review you will see that there is a workbook that goes with Rocky Red. There are tons of activities in this book for probably 6 and above age child. And in the back of Rocky, you will find lots of information that shows you how to go online and there is even more things online. Take advantage of these free resources available to you.
Fallout by Carrie Stuart Parks September 12 – October 7, 2022 Virtual Book Tour
My Rating: FiveStars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
ABOUT THE BOOK
Her carefully crafted life is about to be demolished.
After a difficult childhood, Samantha Williams craves simplicity: jigsaw puzzles, lectures at the library, and the students she adores in her role as an elementary art teacher in the dusty farming community of LaCrosse, Washington.
But when an SUV crashes into the school where she teaches, her entire world is upended. She manages to keep all of the children safe, but her car isn’t so lucky. Oddly, her purse—containing her driver’s license, credit cards, and other identification—is missing from the wreckage.
After authorities discover that the driver in the school accident was shot seconds before the crash, Samantha quickly becomes entangled in increasingly strange events that have her looking over her shoulder.
Samantha has long tried to forget the tragedy of her past, but the twisting maze she discovers between the murdered driver, a deadly secret government project, and an abandoned town can’t be ignored. Those involved are determined to keep these secrets buried, and they’ll use any means necessary to stop Samantha’s search for truth.
Praise for Fallout:
“An intriguing story based on events around a part of Washington. Tight timeline with tons of action. Twists and turns that will keep readers engaged and guessing. I enjoyed this book and recommend it to those who want a whisper of romance included with the mystery.”
MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
When Samantha sees the SUV that’s about to crash into her classroom all she can think of is to yell for her students to get out.and thankfully her quick thinking saved the lives of all the children. But her purse didn’t pan out do well, in fact it’s gone! And the SUV driver didn’t make it out of the crash.
Wow! Carrie Parks sure does start off with a bang with her new novel Fallout. Samantha wasn’t sure what to think, especially when she finds her purse is gone, so no keys to her house, but she couldn’t go there anyway. When things started happening that couldn’t be explained, Samantha started getting a little uneasy. And after a while she downright fearful. Where is this fear coming from? Does Samantha have a secret past? I guess reading the book will tell you. And the twists and turns had my head spinning so much, by the time I had one thing figured out something else is happening. I was having a hard time figuring everything out. But I love it!! I always love a good suspense that will knock me off my feet abd this one did. I was so glued to Fallout that I couldn’t stop reading. It’s difficult to give any more information out because I’ll end up telling you something you don’t need to hear until you read it. So I’ll just say check out this book!! Carrie Stuart Parks does an awesome job writing suspense novels. I don’t get to review many of her books but I love it when I can. Hope you will enjoy this one as much as I did! For me, this is Five Stars!
MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
#iReadBookTours
The Prickly Problem: Dr. Pete the Porcupine by Cheryl DaVeiga is such a cute book. Dr. Pete Porcupine loved his desert neighbors, and was glad when he could solve their problems. One day Dr. Pete had a good day in the office, but all of his friends were waiting on him as he came out of his office. There was a problem with Cactus Jack, he was so mean and rude. But could Dr. Pete help Jack?
This is such an adorable children’s book. You child is sure to love Dr Pete and all of his desert friends. There’s Rhonda the Roadrunner, Liz the Lizard, and more as Dr. Pete solved their Prickly problems. And Luis Peres does an amazing job with the illustrations in this book. The colors of the animals match the animals and each one is so adorable. Who would think desert animals could look adorable, but these are! I think your child will love this book for their library. This is also an adorable book for any elementary school library as well as in any daycare. And it would be perfect for Dr. offices!
But… there is hope. A lost legend now awakened.
A set of dormant orbs lay in the gnarled hands of an old man. One by one, the dull orbs spark and swirl to life. Somewhere within the City of Lynn, the scroll of equals remains hidden. It’s text, supplied by the gods, awaits the chosen who may one day save the land of Acre.
Or so the legend says.
Tour & Giveaway Improbable MD by Dr. Derek J. Robinson
This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotoins. The Literary Lobbyist will be awarding a $25 Amazon GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.
In Improbable MD, Dr. Derek J. Robinson traces his unlikely journey from fishing on the bayous of Louisiana, to an ER and helicopter flight physician in Chicago, to leadership in some of the US’ largest health care organizations.
The grandson of a sharecropper and son of a single mother, Derek grew up in a working-class neighborhood in Shreveport, LA. A graduate of the city’s public schools, he saw first-hand the difference that access to quality education and health care made within his own family. He shares how his dream of being a doctor became a reality, despite the odds, and why he believes mentoring and investing in young people is vital to the health of our nation.
Robinson takes the reader inside the ER, where he has treated victims of gun violence and shares how spilt-second clinical decisions and the trust of his patients, shaped his appreciation for being a doctor, But, even with many years of training, he exposes how it feels to reach the limits of what he can offer patients and even shares the pain and lessons he has learned from the illness and loss of family members. Beyond the walls of the ER, Dr. Robinson explains how we became a business leader in health care and influential voice in boardrooms.
Through sharing his inspirations and tribulations, Dr. Robinson inspires readers to push beyond both self-doubt and external obstacles to pursue their dreams. In telling his story, he shares the roles that faith, friendship, love, and fatherhood have played in his life, and he hopes to motivate readers to chart their own journeys to successful and fulfilling lives.
About the Author:
Derek J. Robinson is a board-certified physician in Emergency Medicine. He is vice president and chief medical officer at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, a division of Health Care Service Corporation – the nation’s largest non-investor owned health insurance company. Now, he has only hours.
Excerpt :
This was a storm     with everything on it
This was a storm with everything on it.
Rain? Thick billowing sheets of it sweeping over the landscape.
Wind? Lots of it, making the rain fall at something like a 45-degree angle. If you went out there with an umbrella, it’d be inside out before you could get to shelter.
Thunder and lightning? There was so much of both, there wasn’t any point trying to do that one-banana two-banana thing for figuring out how far away the lightning was. You couldn’t tell which thunderclap belonged to which lightning stroke.
The only thing missing was hail. Lock tried not to think too much about this, in case he jinxed it and big chunks of ice starting falling from the sky.
Ultralights weren’t meant to fly in the rain. Lock wasn’t too clear on what would happen if you tried it. Heather had never even tried to teach him how. The planes could handle a slight drizzle, but this was not a slight drizzle.
Lock turned and went back down the stairs. Just past the door to the attic, he met Luther.
“What are you still doing here? Go!” said the detective.
Lock ran back. I didn’t actually tell him about the rain. Maybe I should have. Another failure to communicate. He’d hoped he was done with those.
Then he thought And if I had, what would he have said? “So much for that, let’s all go home and try again tomorrow?” This isn’t a track meet, this is a heist. You can’t just reschedule it.
  • About the Book
Book: Freerunner
Author: Kathy Cassel
Genre: YA
Release date: March, 2022
Set against the backdrop of the sport of freerunning, Kia must decide whether she will continue running or face her past abuser in order to save another child.
Night is Kia’s favorite time, when she freeruns to outdistance the memories of abuse she suffered as a young child. But when former reality television star Terrence Jones arrives at their school as the new head track coach, things begin to change in unpredictable ways. Kia tries out for the team to fit in, but just as she’s gaining a new sense of normal, her abuser steps back into her life. Not only that, but being on the track team causes even more turmoil. Why does the assistant coach, Cassandra Clark, dislike Terrence Jones so much, and even more troubling, why does Coach Clark dislike her so much? As the pieces of the puzzle begin to come together, Kia realizes she has to choose between running from her past or saving a child from the same sort of abuse she suffered. But will she have the courage to do so?
And now an Interview with the author
1. Why choose the genre you are writing?
I love YA books, but most of the books I was checking out from the library had themes of depression, suicide, death and so on. I quickly realized the books didn’t offer any real answers or hope, and I felt a strong call to switch from devotion books to fiction that would reach teens with the message that no matter what has happened in their lives God has a plan for them. There is always hope. And there is healing. If they walk away from the story with any sense of hope or that God cares, then my book has succeeded in its mission. But to keep them reading, I try to create interesting characters and add action and a little suspense to each story.
2. Why fiction instead of non-fiction?
I believe in the healing power of story. My stories are issue based. If the reader isn’t going through the same thing as my main character, then it can simply be an escape to another place for a while. If they are facing that issue, the story gives the reader a character to relate to and lets her know she is not alone. It’s also a springboard to discuss what is happening in the reader’s life.
My goal is that Freerunner will be a good resource for girls who have been molested or worst. That by reading the book they will find the courage to speak out and get help.
3.Where is your favorite setting for a story you have written?
I have three YA stories and am currently working on an underwater crime scene investigation book.
4. Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?
I know the milestones we need to reach, but the characters often decide how to get there themselves.
5. Which scene, character or plotline changed the most from first draft to published book?
This is an easy one because it happened fairly recently. I had almost finished A Thousand Lies, a story where a girl runs away to NYC to try and find her birth mother. Her father had died in prison. Then I sent my fiction coach this message, “What if Bailey’s birth dad didn’t die in prison, but comes after here?” I had to revise the whole story, but it’s a much stronger story now.
6. If I write a review of your book, what do you want to hear?
Move over John Green, here’s an issue-based, faith-based book that not only has realistic characters, a solid plot, action, and suspense, but it also offers hope and healing.
7. Where is your favorite vacation getaway?
New York City with my kids. There are so many different kinds of things to do that it’s a different experience every time. But we also like Bryson City where we tube, raft, and just hang out.
About the Author
Internet_20220907_222343_3
Kathy Cassel is author of more a dozen fiction and non-fiction titles for preteens and teens, including 2021 Selah Award finalist Freerunner and the iParenting award winner Christian Girls Guide series. Kathy has lived on three different continents with her USAF husband, has eight children, five adopted from Haiti and the United States, and six grandchildren. To better relate to her characters, she enjoys learning their skills such as whitewater rafting, scuba diving, and riding a motorcycle, but draws the line at sky diving.
More from Kathy
For many years I wrote devotion books for preteens and early teens. I tried to make the devotions both fun and interesting. I wanted preteens and early teens to see that the Bible is relevant to them today. But I realized that the readers I most wanted to reach weren’t likely to pick up the Bible or a daily devotion book. But they might read a story. These are the teens who are hurting inside. Those who have been abused, neglected, bullied, abandoned, or who  face challenges. Those who may have lost hope and who need healing. Those who need to realize that God still has a plan for them no matter what has happened.
So I turned to writing faith-based, issue-based young adult books. It hasn’t been easy. There are a multitude of issue based books in the general market, but these can be graphic and offer little hope or healing, yet they are snatched off the shelves and are some of the most popular books. Mine are not graphic and mention God throughout the book. They are not likely to reach library shelves. So the challenge is to get them into the hands of the readers who most need them.
Freeerunner is about a 15-year-old girl who is sexually molested/abused (I never give details so readers can interpret what happened based on their own knowledge and experiences) by a family member when she is only six. She doesn’t get help. No one talks about it. So when the abuser walks back into her life now that she’s 15, she has a lot of unresolved feelings. For adults reading this book, the story may trigger negative feelings or bring up a painful past. But don’t let that turn you away from the book because it may be a powerful resource for those experiencing what Kia did. For teens, the book gives them a character they can relate to. The story lets them know they are not alone and don’t need to suffer in isolation. Like Kia they may find the courage to finally speak out and get help. And they may come to realize that God has an amazing plan for them no matter their past.
So for some the book may simply be an entertaining sports story, while for others it can be a springboard to talk about their own problems. I am hoping this book will become a resource for parents, counselors, pastors, youth leaders, Sunday School teachers, and librarians to share with teen readers.
And above all, I hope the story is a source of hope and healing to those who need it.
