July 27, 2021 by Love Inspired

This cowgirl has wandered back home…

Will she choose her past or her future?

Needing time to heal after a rodeo injury, Kate Rainbolt heads to her family ranch to accept the foreman job her brothers offered her months ago. But the position’s already been filled by her ex-boyfriend, Jess McNally, and the only open job reports to him. With Jess as her temporary boss—and turning into something more—might he finally convince Kate to put down roots?

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Tina Radcliffe has been a favorite Love Inspired author for me for a good while. I love her sweet and clean Romances and I always enjoy reading them. And The Cowgirl’s Sacrifice is another amazing read by Radcliffe. How much fun can you get when Kate Rainbolt is home healing from a rodeo injury and the only job open she can have with her brothers reports to her ex-boyfriend. I love when exes are kind of forced to work together, it makes for an amazing read.

I love the small Oklahoma town of Rebel which Radcliffe created for this wonderful series, a town that would be such fun to live in. The character created by the author are phenomenal, I have enjoyed getting to know them better and now I’m so glad I could read Kate and Jess’s story. Though it does start out a bit touchy. Kate has been traveling with the rodeo for so long, being home is going to be strange, and even more with Jess McNally in the mix. I so much enjoyed the interactions between Kate and Jess as they worked together, and seeing their attractions grow. Even though I knew the ending, it was fun reading the way it happened. If you enjoy a good clean romance that can be pretty quickly read, you will love this one. A Cowgirl’s Sacrifice is Five Stars for me!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I love it when a book captures my attention within the first few pages and that is just what Love Blooms did. Ethan decides to go to Bluestar Island when his mom calls him about his aunt needing help. He has been to the island many times throughout the years and his aunt has been good to him, and after all, he just extended his leave from the fire department after a horrific accident placed him off from work. What can it hurt to go stay at the island for a while? But Ethan wasn’t expecting to meet Hannah there.
In Jennifer Faye’s usual style, she writes another amazing sweet story that will leaving you swooning for quite some time. I love her characters, especially Ethan and Hannah, and the supporting characters make up for a lot of fun in this story. I love Aunt Birdie, even though she is meddlesome! She brings so much fun and humor to the story I am glad Faye thought of creating her. The island is a place I would love to live. Small town, friendly people, the beach anytime you want to go. What’s not to like? If you enjoy a good summer beach read that will keep you laughing and having fun, this is an amazing read for you. Love Blooms by Jennifer Faye gets alive Stars from me!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

This is my first book of Pamela Kelly’s I have read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love the Whitley Hotel and the Whitley family. This grandfather does an amazing job of keeping all of the family working in jobs they are capable of doing. This is why he gives his grandaughter Paula a promotion, because he knows she can do the job. And the cousin there is not doing such a good job.
I found it fun watching the family and they had their ups and downs, their friends that sometimes turned into more than friends. Ms. Kelley create a host of characters to pull this book off and she does a marvelous job of it. I like the grandfather best of course, but the Paula and David were my favorites. I love the attraction there, but neither would confirm it because they were so busy doing their jobs and both thought the other could be interested in then. Could they?
There were a lot if twists and turns. The arrival of a super well known actor brought its own flavor to the mix as well as a little romance to the plate. All in all, this is a very nice clean summer and beach read. If this is the genre you love, then it is a must for you to read. And if you are looking for an enjoyable summer read, I encourage you to pick this one up.
A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Tour and Giveaway for Bound by a Ring and a Secret by Jennifer Faye

  • Bound by a Ring and a Secret
(Wedding Bells at Lake Como #1)
By Jennifer Faye
Contemporary Romance
Hardcover, Paperback & ebook, 175 Pages
May 25, 2021 by Harlequin Romance

A mistaken identity…
…a proposal that changes everything!

Photographer Gianna is done with men. Retreating to her villa on the shore of Lake Como, Gianna is stunned to find gorgeous Dario renting her house! When Dario is mistaken for her long-gone fiancé, they realize a fake engagement could solve problems for them both. Pretending to be in love should be easy, but what happens when very real feelings start to grow?

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Gianna comes home from a Photographer shoot wanting nothing more than to relax and rest, but she wasn’t expecting to find a man in her house, and a handsome one at that. Dario rented a villa to be alone to finish his book and was surprised to find a woman in the house, no notice or anything. He has the house rented for another month and he wasn’t leaving. And then there’s Tito the dog. But then they finally come to a decision they can work with since it was all the realtors fault. They would stay out of each other’s way for a month and it will all be fine. But it wasn’t.

Bound by a Ring and a Secret is such a fun and enjoyable read by author Jennifer Faye. As always, the characters were well created and I enjoyed  their development as the story unfolds. Dario and Gianna didn’t handle things so well, resulting in even more problems for the two, and their growing attraction doesn’t help. Tito the dog doesn’t help the situation either by falling head over heels for Gianna and doesn’t understand when the two decide to go their separate ways. But never fear, Faye, and her excellent writing weaves the situations together and gives readers and ending that will Wow you back for more. If you enjoy a good sweet and clean romance, you will love Gianna and Dario’s story. Don’t miss put on this one.

April 6, 2021 by Burns and Lea Books
Patient Twenty-Nine, or Jane, is within reach of her heart’s desire: a home outside of Soothing Hills Asylum, where she has been raised.

Her sister Jules wants to take her in, and a man, Mason, is deeply in love with her and wants to care for her. But before Jane can leave, she must be examined by the Board of Lunacy. Jane is still hearing voices and songs from the cornfield outside the asylum, voices and songs that tell her what she must do, and that no one else can hear. So the Board may not allow her to leave.

But the asylum is becoming more and more dangerous. Its lead alienist, Dr. Frost, has disappeared, there have been frightening sightings of a woman in white, running through the corn at night, and perhaps worst of all: lobotomized women from the asylum are turning up pregnant.

Jane is desperate to get away and go to her new home. Mason and Jules only want to rescue Jane from the asylum.

But there is a complication: for Jane, the voice in the corn calls. And she must obey.

Excerpt from Book

Gentile arrives at the chair, his wizened hand lightly touching the halo.

The hair on the back of my neck rises. I understand the need for many of the asylum’s treatments—but this? I cannot come to terms with this idea, nor the outcomes I have thus far borne witness to. Electricity, fed through the chair’s halo, till life is extinguished.

“And how is Old Sparky today?” He speaks to the machine, patting it almost lovingly.

I shudder and bite my lip.

All words die in my throat.

As a boy, I watched our farm animals perish in a horrible barn fire. From that day, the sickeningly sweet smell of charred flesh is seemingly ever-embedded in my nostrils and mind.

Merely staring at “Old Sparky” not only revives this phantom smell but sends an instantaneous rise of bile up my esophagus.

“You do not approve,” Gentile says. It is not a question.

“No. This is one area of practice where we diverge. I… do not believe we should have the power to… snuff life. Not in this fashion.”

Gentile nods. “I am only in agreement in extreme circumstances. The chair was Frost’s, you know this.”

“Yes. But I was under the assumption we were here to discuss ablation. Not this… contraption.”

“Indeed. Walk with me, Jonathon.” He slips a periodical into my hands, the London Medical and Surgical Journal, where I assume I will read of his justifications for “Old Sparky.” Physicks are deluded in the sense that if words appear in a coherent, bound, and published fashion, they must be true and should be replicated.

I myself am a believer in problem-solving and experience.

I follow, just now noticing a huddled group of white coats, new alienists. Their faces are so fresh, they resemble excited schoolboys
rather than newly graduated interns from the College of Physicians and Surgeons.

“No. I sawr him. I’s tellin’ you, I sawr him!” a patient wails.

The young doctor dodges—but is not quick enough.

The young woman clutches and attaches to Dr. Pembleton’s lab coat, shaking him hard enough to send his horn-rimmed spectacles sliding to the end of his pointy nose.

Though her waist is buckled to the chair, the girl halves her body like a contortionist as Pembleton struggles backward, giving a valiant effort to disentangle himself.

I step forward, and all six young coats straighten in attention, parting like the sea for Moses to grant me passage.

I stand before her, bobbing and weaving with her darting gaze. “What is it, Wilhelmina? Whom have you seen?”

Her befuddled expression clears as her eyes fixate on me. She releases Pembleton, and he immediately retreats into the protective huddle of alienists as they close ranks. They circle him like a horde protecting an injured comrade.

“Oh, Dr. Grayjoy.” She grasps my hand, and I squeeze it in return. “I sawr him. IdidIdidIdid.”

I kneel before her. “Who? Who have you seen?”

Her face drains of remaining color, her eyes flicking left and right like an animal trapped.

She leans in, our heads nearly touching—I smell ripe urine and the rot of her teeth.

“Dr. Cloud. He has returned.”

YA Historical Urban Fantasy
Hardcover, Paperback & ebook, 300 Pages
February 4, 2019 by Burns and Lea Books

Life for Patient 29 is full of medicated day dreams of a life outside the walls of Soothing Hills Asylum. But fantasies are not all that consume her. A monster roams the halls of the sanitarium she reluctantly calls home and three girls have been found dead. The dead girls share one common thread . . . each was 29’s cell mate. As the investigation gets under way, she retreats into her mind, listening to the voices that call to her. She is endowed with the cursed gift of perception. Through it, she hears messages carried upon the notes of music, discerns words hidden among the strokes of paintings, and minds pleadings for help from the corn field outside.

Could the key to the murders lie within 29’s broken mind? Mason, an orderly, does not see 29 as a lunatic and as his belief in her grows so does her self-confidence. The possibility of one day leaving the asylum seems less and less like a fantasy. But the monster has other plans for her. Leaving will not be so easy, at least not while she is alive.

I have really come to love the Harlequin Heartwarming line of sweet and clean romance stories and A Marriage of Inconvenience is one of the best. Sometimes marriage of inconvenience works out, sometimes it does not. In this book, before the bride even got married there were problems! Sophia and Evan meet at a bank robbery of all places. But when Evan shows up for Sophia to plan his wedding, we’ll, so much for the love at first sight.

This was such a fun book to read. With all of the ins and outs, Twista and turns and everything else going on, it was for sure a story that kept me turning the pages. I had to get to the end fast to see how the story would turn out. This is the last book in Amy Vastine’s Stop That Wedding Series and I’m going to miss these fun reads. I enjoyed the characters in this book so much. Sophia was a feisty strong woman that could overcome whatever life hit her with, which was a good thing with the surprises in this book. I love her grandmother, and the firm foundation she brings to the story. I love the way Vastine weaves everything together to create a wonderful ending to the book and to the series. I will be looking for more from her in the future. This one gets a Five Stars from me.

Tips for Surviving the Haunt

In the middle of the 21st century, the devastating Malevolence computer virus has left wide swaths of abandoned homes in the suburban rings around cities. These “Haunts” are stalked by crazed, zombie-like robots that violently attack humans. On most occasions, surviving humans tend to avoid venturing near Haunts. But, if you do need to undertake a mission into one of these dangerous areas (like the characters in my Christian dystopian novel “WoE Is Us”), here are some tips to help you make it out alive:

Tip #1: Travel after midnight. Yes, the Haunt is usually safer in the middle of the night. After ten years without maintenance, many of the bots lurking in the Haunt have batteries that no longer hold a charge. They rely upon solar power to operate and recharge during the day. By midnight, most bots have entered a suspended state to preserve energy and wait for morning. Though stumbling upon a sleeping bot in the midnight shadows of the Haunt may provide an unnerving surprise, it’s far safer than encountering the same waking bot in the daylight. NOTE: Some bots still have strong batteries, so don’t assume every bot you meet will be asleep.

Tip #2: Keep it quiet. Noise attracts bots, which can be problematic for traveling the Haunt. For example, using a gun to defend yourself in the Haunt could bring a hundred bots down on top of your location. Using specialized weaponry like lightning bugs (which fire special electrodes to overload the circuitry of bots to incapacitate them) is highly recommended. If necessary, using a large knife to sever critical components within the bot’s neck and torso can be an effective, if dangerous, option. If you must use a gun, flee the area after firing the weapon as quickly as possible. NOTE: Noise can also wake nearby sleeping bots.

Tip #3: Get in and out. Don’t stay long. Lingering in the Haunt will eventually prove disastrous.

Tip #4: Pray. Seriously. You can use all the help you can get!

By using the tips above, your visit to the Haunt near you has a fighting chance of success. To see how one group’s trip to the Haunt went, check out “WoE Is Us.”

Drew leaned back against the couch and stared at their Santa photo. “This is still one of my favorite Thanksgivings ever.”

“Seriously?” Molly sipped her wine.

“It’s one of the few I didn’t spend with my nose in a law book the entire time,” Drew admitted.

Molly swirled her wine in her glass. “We were good that way, weren’t we?”

“What way?”

“We balanced the school and work with the fun,” she said. “Remember flag football.”

“And trivia nights.” He nudged her shoulder with his. “You always hated when you lost.”

“I still hate to lose.” She laughed and finished her wine. “I don’t miss those late-night burrito runs when we left the library after a study session.”

“Best burritos in town.” Drew touched his stomach. “You always ate half of mine even after you complained you weren’t hungry and didn’t even want a burrito.”

“It always looked better when you were eating it. I don’t know why.”

“Everything is better together.” Drew wanted to swallow those words but it was too late. They were already out. In the sudden quiet, he realized a truth. Things had been better with Molly in his life. What happened to us?

Drew cleared his throat. They’d been friends and grown apart. He wouldn’t mistake the gratitude and respect he felt for Molly now to be anything more than that. But his gaze returned to the picture and thoughts of Molly as something more rumbled inside his chest.

“I bet you never knew you were my only real friend.” Molly scooted into Drew’s side, set her head on his shoulder and traced her finger over the picture. “I’ve really missed you.”

He had to admit it. “I’ve missed you too.”

Here we met Finn Cornelius Smith, a spritely young lad who isn’t afraid to answer a good question. We found Finn to be just as wild and majestic as the Scottish Highlands from which he hails. And we know you will too!

QUILL: Hello, Finn Cornelius. Thanks for sitting down with us today. I always like to start with a good ice breaker. What did you have for dinner last night?
FINN: Is my Nanny here?
QUILL: Your Nanny?
FINN: Aye, my Nanny, the old dear that brought me here.
QUILL: I think I saw her on the couch out front. But what does that have to do with what you had for dinner last night?
FINN: So…she’s in the house?
QUILL: Yes. Last I checked she was here.
FINN: On the couch?
QUILL: Correct. But it looked like she was, well, she was snoring.
FINN: Oh, okay. So, she’s asleep?
QUILL: I think it’s safe to say that, yes. She’s out for the count.
FINN: Right. That makes sense. It is her nap time, after all. Okay, I’ll tell you what we had for dinner last night. We had liver and parsnips.
QUILL: Liver and parsnips? That sounds…interesting. Did you like it?
FINN: Oi! Are you serious? I hate liver. But don’t tell my Nanny I said that. It’d probably upset her to know that I never eat it. You see, she thinks I do….she thinks that I like liver and parsnips.
QUILL: Oh, and how’s that?
FINN: I hide it in my napkin when she’s not looking, and then later, after she’s gone to bed, I take it out back and chuck it over the garden wall.Don’t let on that you know that, though. She gets the liver special from the butcher all the way in town. She’d skin me alive if she knew I wasn’t devouring every last bite.
QUILL: Don’t worry, I won’t tell her. It sounds like you really don’t like liver. Although at least it wasn’t haggis, right?

A Divine Conspiracy

(A Divine Conspiracy #1) By Tom Bruner

Christian Young Adult Fiction

Paperback & ebook, 297 Pages

February 15, 2021

It’s a new world for the first fifty, ever-created, Angels.

They have been brought to life for one reason. To fight evil. But no one knows what evil is or where it’s going to come from. The story takes place in Heaven another newly created estate, under construction as the Angels begin training, under the watchful eye of the Archangel, Michael, to become Guardians on a yet to be created planet called Earth. Heaven is something to behold. The Angels are mystified as they take their first tour through the new city. Incredible architecture (Skyscrapers made of seashells and white sand), birds of every color (Golden Eagles), and a city made of libraries (For those who like to read), are just a few of the sights the Angel’s experience.

We follow Adlay, one of the Angels, from his first breath, through extensive physical training, his Humanities class with Jesus, and his Worship class with a beautiful Angel named Lucifer, who immediately gives Adlay a foreboding feeling. The Angels work hard for months to improve and graduate from training. Adlay excels above everybody else in training but quickly discovers Lucifer is planning something. What he finds out, makes him question if he actually knows what is right or wrong. As the Angels near their big day, Adlay must make a difficult choice. Does he care only about graduating and moving on or does he risk everything to discover if Lucifer and evil are synonymous.

Chapter 1 Creation, continued

“Excuse me, excuse me.”

A tall, light blue, glowing cloud-like life form took shape in the middle of the room. It hovered there, slowly spinning as if looking at everybody, though it did not have any eyes. It was close to three feet tall but had no discernible shape. I can see through it! thought Adlay. Everyone stopped what they were doing and stared at the smoky, blue creature with no face.

Adlay slipped off his table. What is this?

“I’m so sorry, I know this has to be confusing, but that couldn’t be helped,” the smoke quipped in an aristocratic English accent. He paused and turned, seemingly looking around the room. “My name is Thalzn. I am what we call a Spirit, and I will be your host for a brief period.”

Where is his mouth?

The apparition paused, waiting for some sort of feedback. None came.

“Yes, well,” Thalzn finally said, “You, my friends, are what we call new creations. Your job will ultimately be one of Protector or Guardian. For a little while, you will be students. You don’t know what that means yet, but you will. Believe me; it is quite an honor you have. Not quite as honorable as what I do, but not much is!” Thalzn bragged. Nobody looked like they cared, but Thalzn wasn’t put off in the slightest. He continued, “Look around you and be proud. You are the first fifty of your kind ever created.”

Adlay felt a warm, extremely pleasing sensation roll through his body and settle in his heart. A feeling, a sense of camaraderie. That was the word. Why? He looked around the room. Because these people were just like him.

Adlay peered at the glowing spirit again, then around the room as the others were doing the same. This doesn’t seem so bad. I’m one of the first. But of wh…

“I expect you have many questions, as would I, but it is not my place to answer them, and I really don’t have the time. We are tremendously busy. Michael will escort you from here in a few minutes. He will give you all the answers to your questions, I’m sure. I am only here to give you a quick overview of what is happening right now, okay?” Okay.

“Know that you are in a place of infinite joy and happiness. Or at least we will be once we start getting customers. For now, we are still “under construction.” This will be a bit confusing, but I promise, soon, you will begin to feel better, and your thoughts will be clearer the longer you are here. You have been created for many reasons, most of which I will let Michael tell you, but I will say that you will be very much needed, from the little I know. I apologize again; I don’t know what any of that means, I was just told to say it.”

A rumble of murmur came from the Angels. Not helping, Thalzn.

It’s all about the story is what he believes. Tired of the same vanilla spoonful every time he opened a Christian Fiction book, he decided to write, A Divine Conspiracy. This book is set in the newly created estate of Heaven. It tells the story of the creation and training of the first Angels ever to be. We follow Adlay, a newly created Angel from his first breath, through physical training and classes with Jesus and Lucifer until the day Heaven falls apart. It packs a punch. There is not a dull moment.

Tom considers taking a motley group of boys from the 7th grade through the graduation of high school with Lifegroup a church program to be his greatest accomplishment so far. That and U.S. Air Force Basic Training. That and fraternity initiation. Oh, and running a marathon without training. The boys and Tom met once a week throughout each school year. Spending six years with the same boys going through that period of their life a great adventure. Tom, an avid Christian, volunteers on Sundays at his church in the junior high ministry. Please pray for him.

I really love the Heroes of Shelter Creek, By Claire McEwen. I have read all of them except one. So I’m getting that one to read as well. Second Chance Cowboyο is another from this series and it didn’t disappoint. These characters quickly found their way into my heart. Wes and Emily were adorable. Even though there wasn’t much to be adored about them at first. Even though Wes was the perfect man for the job, Emily didn’t trust him, since he had broken her heart once. I enjoyed their working together and their slowly trusting each other and tensions lowering as the attraction grew. Author Claire McEwen does a fantastic job of weaving these two loves together and creating a story that will stay with me for a long while.

Second Chance Cowboy is part of Harlequin’s Heartwarming line of Romance. Romances that I love reading because they are clean, sweet and just what you expect in a Romance. And this just describes Second Chance Cowboy to a T. All of you Romance buffs out there, this one is for you!

Excerpt

SHE WAS WEARING the necklace.

Seth felt relief and affection mix in this odd way inside of him, like a chemical reaction bubbling over and making him want to laugh. But he didn’t. He’d never want Victoria to think he was laughing at her. Because he wasn’t. It was pure relief. And joy, because he couldn’t help but fixate briefly on the looking forward to things she’d listed. Like their first pizza, first date, first kiss…

Nodding slowly, he tried to process all this information. Good news, mostly. If he hadn’t talked to Henry, he might never have ended up here tonight. He owed Henry huge.

But first, he and Vic needed to clarify a few things. “That is very thoughtful of you,” he said carefully.

“I’m glad you understand.” She gave him a weak smile. “I have a lot of baggage, and that’s not fair to you to have to pack it around with me. It’s better this way. You need to focus on putting on the best performance you can.”

“Hmm. So, if you were to talk to me about all of this, would that somehow take away from you turning in your best performance?”

“No, of course not. The opposite, I think. At least, that’s how I felt…before. In fact, I couldn’t wait for you to get here.”

“Before what?” he asked, liking that last part an awful lot.

“Before I talked to my ex. I was already struggling with feeling overwhelmed and insecure about the show. And then he tells me this thing and, boom, it was like being slingshotted backward to our past. There’s a lot there, Seth. Things I can’t talk about. And now he wants to use Scarlett to help him get what he wants, just like he used me, like he uses everyone. And I can’t be there for Scarlett right now. The timing is so terrible that I would accuse him of doing it on purpose to sabotage me if I thought he was that clever.”

“I see. Well, I still think I should get to decide whether listening to my girlfriend’s problems, supporting her, maybe offering to help or at least provide some comfort, would affect me and my performance.”

“Girlfriend?” she repeated, her expression softening, her body visibly relaxing.

He shrugged. “You put the necklace back on. That suggests to me that you still have feelings for me, right?”

Tears were shining in her eyes. “Seth, I have all the feelings. In fact, I might have too many feelings. The reason I took it off was because I wanted to follow the rules we established and keep everything separate. But I don’t think I can do that, which is why I told you that we should just focus on our Romeo Reels time. When this is over, maybe we can… Try again.”

“Try again? Is that what you want? Or is that what you think is best for me?”

“Best for you,” she answered immediately. “Because, Seth, look at me, I am a hot mess. That’s not an easy thing for me to admit. I pride myself on always being prepared. Composed. But today was like a perfect storm of everything going wrong, and I… It’s been a struggle, a struggle that I don’t want to drag you into.”

“If that’s all that’s going on, then no.”

“No?”

“I don’t like this plan. I should get a say in this, too. And I want to try still. Not again. I want to be with you whenever I can. I don’t care if it’s five minutes in the evenings, or seventeen seconds in the morning, or touching your hand under the table, or passing you in the hall where I can just look my fill, or texting and calling if that’s truly all we have time for. But I want to know that you’re mine. Because I want to be yours, Victoria. Whatever that means right now. When I said that to you about keeping the time separate, I didn’t know I was going to fall for you as hard as I have. Or that our schedule would be quite so packed.”

“Oh.”

“We can carve out space for some of the things you were looking forward to. We just need to plan, yet also be spontaneous. Take advantage of opportunities that arise.”

She nodded, looking relieved and agreeable and so beautiful that he could not wait any longer to touch her.

“Like our first kiss, for example. Maybe now would be the perfect moment to cross that off your list.”

Altered Helix (Altered Helix #1) By Stephanie Hansen Young Adult Fantasy Novella Paperback, Audiobook & ebook, 96 Pages May 19, 2020 by Hypothesis Books

I didn’t want to take the traditional path. First, I wasn’t ready for college. Second, I was going to live with my best friend, Tiff, and work at the Haunted House. Third, did I mention the hot guy Josh that works there too?

The most exciting thing about Austria’s new job, at a local haunted house, was the fact that the toughest looking people screamed the loudest. But when she meets the boy without a home, Josh, Austria’s life takes intriguing and eventful turns. Up until now, Josh has managed to hang with his Street crowd, but they’re in danger, and so is Austria, the girl Josh recently fell for. The group finds themselves joining forces with previously considered enemies who also now find themselves in danger.

Deeply compassionate and full of twists, Altered Helix captures the struggle of polarized people that must work together for the greater good.

EXCERPT FROM BOOK

I feel bad that Patrice has to work with Matt and Ed now. At least she’ll have Ethan with her. Now I see Ceresa is going to join her too. Good. Tiff’s heading back to Luke and Josh. Before I turn to do the same, I take one last look at Matt and Ed. They’re popping the knuckles on their hands, then they both turn and look directly at me at the same time. Why are they only looking at me? Is it because I’m the new kid? A cold sweat dampens the back of my neck as I turn to walk away.

That’s when it happens. Shadows begin to swarm around me. It’s like they’re circling vultures, and I’m the carcass. The energy makes me as dizzy as if I were dehydrated on a desert. And everything goes black for a second. When it’s light again, I’m hovering above everybody. At first, I think I’ve died and am having an out-of-body experience, but then I hear them. Bill’s over my body on one side checking my pulse, and says that I’ve fainted, embarrassing. Josh and Tiff are on the other side of me and look concerned. Then I hear a voice I would recognize anywhere. When I turn to my right, my voice recognition is confirmed. My father is there. He looks hazy, as if looking at a mirage. He reaches out his hand. I reach out mine. The warmth I feel when I hold his ghostly hand is like a favorite blanket I had as a child. My father looks me in the eyes.

“Be careful, Austria.”

Guest Post: The Storybook World of Hamelin Stoop

A strange portal connects the two worlds of the Hamelin Stoop series. On one side, the portal touches the world at the mouth of a cave outside of Middleton, Texas. The cave is one of many in West Texas, surrounded by small trees and shrubs, at the top of a small hill. Just a few miles away, 8-year-old Hamelin Stoop lives at Upton County Children’s Home, where he was abandoned by his parents as an infant in 1951. The children’s home is tended to by house parents, a cook, and an old farmer named Mr. Moore. Hamelin attends an elementary school in Middleton. He likes some of his teachers, especially Mrs. Eastland, but other people at school, like Mr. Litchie and Patton McBoggerson, make the orphan’s life miserable. The winters blow cold, and the summers are hot with the occasional fast and hard storm. It is one such night, when the rain isn’t expected, when Hamelin decides to run away.

On the other side of the portal, an Atrium with beautiful flowers and light abundant awaits, but it also hides an enchanting darkness beneath healing waters. Beyond the Atrium, there is a medieval world waiting. This world has many kingdoms, including Parthogen, which has been overthrown by an evil commander; Osmethan, where waters of unending life entice the weak-minded; and Periluna, an underground kingdom dependent on a precious jewel for light. These two worlds are connected, and a great evil is attempting to grasp for more power. Nevertheless, the servants of the Ancient One on both sides of the portal have hope.

(Hamelin Stoop #2)

By Robert B. Sloan

Young Adult Fantasy, Christian

Hardcover, Paperback, Audiobook & ebook, 304 Pages

February 7, 2017 by 12 Gates Publishing

Hamelin finally makes it across the footbridge only to learn that his quest to find his parents and learn his true identity will not be quickly done or easy to fulfill. The Great Eagle leads him through the dangerous Waters of Death and Life and into the Land of Gloaming, where Hamelin is thrown into the midst of a war already being waged between the evil Chimera and the mysterious Ancient One. He must help two new friends find a kidnapped princess and recover a stolen jewel, tasks for which they have special gifts that must not be misused: a scarf of sight, shoes of speed, and a sword of death. But these quests are only part of the larger story, a story including Chimera’s plan to use Hamelin—a child of two realms—to seize the kingdoms on both sides of the Atrium of the Worlds.

Guest Post: The Bible, the Pied Piper, and Hamelin Stoop

Do you remember the legend of The Pied Piper? When I was young, I was attracted to many stories of myth and magic, but it was this story that I longed to see finished. It is the story of the lost children of Hameln town. The children were seduced into following the alluring music of a cunning piper (their parents failed to live up to the contract made with the Pied Piper, and he stole the children to exact their unpaid debt and avenge his wounded dignity), who led them into a magic mountain, never to be seen again. Only a few witnesses were left to go back so that the parents would know what they had done, that it was their fault the children were taken.

My childhood mind was troubled. What happened to the children who were taken away? Could they ever be rescued and come home? What about their parents and the pain they felt? Would it ever be relieved? Even today the town of Hameln has an old stained glass window commemorating the loss of the children, as well as historical documents and inscriptions that place the great loss on June 26, 1284, the day of Saints John and Paul. Will Hameln always endure the shame of its treachery? The answers are – nothing will ever be the same until the children are restored to their town and families. But how?

I lived with that painful non-ending until one day the story of the Bible and the legend of The Pied Piper connected in my imagination. The story of the Bible is also unfinished in the Old Testament, and though the beginning of the hoped for ending is picked up again in the New Testament and carried forward substantially through the story of Jesus, it remains still unfinished on the stage of history. I think the stories connected in my mind because both are unfinished, with exiles who have yet to be brought home.

Once I filled out a larger narrative for the world and backstory of The Pied Piper, the Hamelin Stoop series was born.

EXCERPT

The pastor clasped his hands. “Are you passing through town or new to the area?”

“New.”

The handsome worship leader walked past, leaving a spicy lingering scent.

The greying pastor grinned when Chantelle turned back and finished her sentence.

“I moved in this weekend.”

He chuckled. “That’s Andrew McCarthy, by the way.”

“Pardon?” She wrinkled her brow in confusion.

“The guy in the red-chequered shirt—our lead singer, guitarist, set up and pack up guy, maintenance man, elder, the list goes on—his name is Andrew.”

“Oh. Good to know.” Her cheeks heated.

Pastor Bradley smoothed over his beard. “Would you like me to introduce you?”

Her eyes bulged. “No. I don’t think I need any maintenance service or whatever he does.” She swallowed. “How about I meet your wife? I want to find out more about the craft group she mentioned in the announcements.” Her words tumbled in a fluster.

“Certainly.” He winked at the same time as his mustache twitched. Pastor Bradley gestured with a wave to follow him.

Country churches often have interesting folk. If the pastor was any reflection of the people, then she was in for a colorful afternoon. His lame dad-jokes at the beginning of his sermon made her laugh. He seemed like a down-to-earth-type minister. Relatable. Oh, she should ask to meet the youth leader—if they had one. Hopefully, not the drop-dead gorgeous worship leader who seemed in her age bracket. He did everything else, surely not youth work as well.

As Chantelle followed the pastor, she scanned the crowd for teenagers. Two tall girls hovered near their mother. Perhaps they were fifteen and seventeen. Three boys crammed near the snacks, piling up their plastic plates—maybe Noah’s age or younger.

With another glance of the room, she summed up that was all the youth present today—plenty of little children too. That was a good sign of a healthy church. She assumed the small town might have only elderly folk in their churches. This one seemed quite contemporary.

A flaming red-haired pastor’s wife met them halfway. “Hello! I saw you there at the back of the church. Welcome to Boyup. I’m Whitney.” She clasped Chantelle’s hands and wrist.

Chantelle beamed a smile back. This lady had spunk. Delicate freckles decorated her cheeks that appeared round with her blazing bob.

“My name is Chantelle. I’ve moved into Lee-Steer Drive.”

Her eyes lit up. “Fantastic. A beautiful part of town. Some of our members live out that way. If you need anything, you only have to sing out.”

“Lalala.” Chantelle croaked and laughed at herself. “Like that?”

Witney swung her head in a dramatic nod and slapped Chantelle’s shoulder. “You’re gonna fit in just fine, darling. Just fine.”

The Eagle, the Cave, and the Footbridge (Hamelin Stoop #1) By Robert B. Sloan Young Adult Fantasy, Christian Hardcover, Paperback, Audiobook & ebook, 332 Pages November 15, 2016 by 12 Gates Publishing

Afraid of being caught by trackers from another world, a young mother abandons her baby boy in a tomato box inside the screened porch of a children’s home. The staff at the orphanage name him Hamelin Stoop, but he grows up longing to learn his real name, find his parents, and thus discover his true identity.

Life is not easy for Hamelin. He belongs to everyone, though in some ways to no one fully. And the people he is closest to leave him one by one. A letter from an older friend advises Hamelin to “keep waiting and keep hoping.” Bitter experiences force Hamelin to wait, but he has to learn how to hope.

When the children’s home forgets his eighth birthday, he sneaks away at night. He soon discovers that he isn’t just running away — he is being summoned by the Ancient One. Guided by the Great Eagle through a mysterious cave, Hamelin must pass a dangerous test of courage before he can find his parents.

Hamelin’s failures, fears, and hopes become part of a larger story, a story of a great struggle between worlds and kingdoms where the old myths of magic, evil contracts, and enslaved children turn out to be real.

Excerpt

The snow had stopped falling, she saw as she ventured outside. Like muslin, white sheets draped tree and field. Their gardener had swept the snow off the pond, and the ice glittered darkly under the heavy sky. She pointed one group toward the sleigh that stood waiting, the horses’ breath fogging the air, and another group toward the lawn, where two industrious youths were already fashioning snowballs. Though he remained at her side, Julian kept glancing toward the pond. Skating, then. Gliding along, arm in arm, their steps matching as they used to do when they were younger. How romantic. Another shiver went through her.

“Cold?” Julian asked, taking a step closer.

Not with him so near. Those eyes were all encouragement, his mouth turned up and head cocked as if he were ready to listen to anything she cared to impart. He was going to be an excellent solicitor. Already she wanted to confess her hopes.

“It will pass,” Mary assured him. “Would you care to skate?”

“Delighted.” He offered her his arm again, and they walked over to the wrought-iron bench overlooking the pond. Already another couple swept past on the ice. Grooms stood by to strap the steel blades onto footwear. In moments, Mary was out on the glassy surface with Julian at her side. The cool air nipped her cheeks as they set off.

Oh, to always feel this free. It took the merest pressure to sail along. The evergreens alongside the pond flashed by, dusky against the silver of the pond and sky. Julian matched her stride, though he kept his hands behind his back, as if for balance.

“Was it last year you raced me to the end of the pond?” he asked, a twinkle in his eyes.

“And won,” Mary reminded him.

“You’ve changed since then,” he said.

Perhaps not as much as she’d thought, for the urge was impossible to resist. “I could still beat you.”

“You’re on.”

Charlotte Pullard opened her eyes to the gray of dawn, blinking slowly. Gradually, a beamed ceiling came into focus… but it wasn’t her ceiling. Whose ceiling was it? She closed her eyes again, thinking.

She’d kissed her mother goodbye. Something about that felt sad, wrong somehow. Maybe she hadn’t wanted to leave. And her father… her father…

Miss Suzanna Spencer smoothed her slightly dirty work apron and checked the state of her unruly dark blonde bun. At the edge of the plot on a stone bench sat her sickly, coughing father, who dutifully inspected his radishes.

She sat down a few yards from him and sunk her trowel near a carrot, unearthing a rock. Chocolate-colored soil flew all over the tidy linen cravat of Mr. Lacy, her father’s studying vicar, who followed directly behind her, weeding the beds as she continued her story. “You see,” she said speaking quickly and with such animated hand motions that Mr. Lacy had no choice but to submit to the barrage of soil now covering his vest.

I’ve managed to remove my mic, which was a feat all its own, and now I’m wrangling with my Timothy leggings. With an almighty effort, I pull them up to my thighs, my dress bunched up under my chin.
