I have  been through many Bible Studies written by Liz Curtis Higgs, and I have loved them all, and have learned so much from the studies. This is another awesome study. I love that she wants to help women everywhere how to live their fullest Christian life by teaching us how to be the person we should be. Sometimes it takes action in doing what we need to do in order to be in the right relationship with the Lord, and this book will help you will that. After reading Here Burns My Candle, I just had to finish the story with Mine is the Night. To me, I liked this book much better. I enjoyed reading the glorious ending to a wonderful story as it follows the lives of Marjory and Elizabeth Kerr. The mother-in-law, daughter-in-law pair finally makes their way to Marjory’s cousin Anne’s in Selkirk, but Gibson should already be there but he hasn’t shown up, causing the two ladies to worry about him, and it seems no one else has seen him. Living was to be entirely different, with Marjory, Elizabeth and Anne now living in a one room apartment. Anne and Elizabeth had to struggle making the money to survive, leaving Marjory to do the cooking, which was interesting since she was the one that hired help to cook for her. Living by Faith and trusting the Lord was the only thing left to do. They had nothing, no money, home, husbands to take care of them, they had to make it on their own.

It was heartwarming to see the turnaround personality change in Marjory during this time, from the very wealthy to the very poorest of circumstances. She dealt with the change well, being willing to learn to cook and keep the one room house herself while the others worked. Elizabeth is a lady we all want to be like. Her love and care of her mother-in-law Marjory was unbelievable. And God did guide every step of their life, leading Elizabeth into a job as seamstress for the retired and very wealthy Admiral Jack Buchanan. Buchanan is not like most wealthy men, he really cares for his workers, and is especially attracted to Elizabeth, who was still wearing her black, mourning the death of her husband. But what about the 12 month mourning period? Does she really have to wait the entire twelve months? And then there is a twist to the story that makes the story even more interesting as an unexpected visitor/worker comes to town. As the story keeps unfolding, and finally comes to an amazing end, the reader will witness a heartwarming account of redemption and restoration that these ladies never imagined. Truly God loved them and was watching over them the entire time. What he had in store for the Kerr ladies was truly exceedingly, abundantly above everything they could have ask or even thought about. And to have it all take place in a Scottish setting was the icing on the cake! To feel the country of Scotland, the food, cloths, people, atmosphere, and beauty was breathtaking. This was Liz Curtis Higgs at her best!

I recommend this book to anyone liking a good historical fiction playing out a story in Bible times. I received this book free from Waterbrook Multnomah blogging for books program. Embrace Grace by Liz Curtis Higgs
Do you sometimes feel you just don’t belong anywhere, or always feel like you are missing something? Can God really love us after everything we have done, and just how can we really know that He has forgiven us? Does this all seem so overwhelming to you that you just don’t want to talk about it? Pick up a copy of Embrace Grace and see what Liz Curtis Higgs says about God’s Grace, and what it can do for us.
Liz wants us to grab grace and embrace it with both arms. Grace doesn’t come from our doing good works, or trying to live perfect lives. Grace comes from first repenting of the sins in our lives, and giving our lives totally to the Lord. When we do this, and continue to give ourselves to Him, God can use us whereever we are, but we have to allow Him to.
Embrace Grace is about how we can fully know the Grace of our Wonderful God! It would be a great Bible Study for a Sunday School class or Study Group.  I would recommend it to any woman who wants to fully know God’s Grace.

Bad Girls of the Bible by Liz Curtis Higgs Book Review

Bad Girls of the Bible is a study dealing with ladies of the Bible who had problems, secrets, and other bad issues in their past. Liz gives us examples of how the actions and bad choices of these ladies ruined their lives, but also how God changed their lives and healed their past through forgiveness when they gave themselves to Him. She also brings out situations in our lives today that are the same as what the Bible girls faced, and helps us understand what we need to do to follow the Lord and leave our problems with Him.  Join bad girls Eve, Rahab, Jezebel, the Women at the well and others as Liz takes a look at the things in their lives that caused their relationship with the Lord to diminish.

Our Sunday School class went through this study several years ago, and I still think about the Bible gals we studied. I really like the way Liz starts each study out with a fictional account in today’s setting. It helped me to understand more when we started the study. Liz is different from a lot of Christian authors.  One thing, she doesn’t hide the fact that she has a past filled with not so good things including drug use and abusive relationships. And she uses her own past life’s situations as illustrations throughout the book. She’s also a funny lady and uses her wit and humor throughout the study as well, helping to keep your attention. This is especially entertaining when watching the DVD that goes along with the study. I highly recommend this study to study groups and Sunday School classes. It can also be used individually, but being in a group was better for me because of the discussions.

Here Burns My Candle takes place in Edinburgh in 1745, with the Kerr family. Marjory lost her husband and is now living with her two sons and their wives, Lord Donald with wife Elizabeth and Andrew with wife Janet. This dysfunctional family has a lot of ups and downs, and so many secrets among them. As the story unfolds, we see the life of this family as secrets come to the surface, and with this, we see what the back of the book describes as……
A timeless story of love and betrayal, loss and redemption, flickering against the vivid backdrop of eighteenth-century Scotland. This was the same with the story of Ruth in the Bible, which is where Here Burns My Candle is drawn from. As the story unfolds, you can see Naomi and Ruth, though some parts are rather loosely told. Sometimes you need to use your imagination to realize its talking about the Story of Ruth.

It took me a while to really get into the story. After the war begins it gets more interesting. The entire book is based on the first 18 verses of Ruth….yes! That’s an entire book on 18 verses, so it is really slow going until about the last one-fourth of the book. It is a lot of background, getting to know the family, neighbors, friends and the Scottish setting.  Just a little bit too slow for my taste. But maybe the author wanted the readers to get that feel of Scotland, and to know the characters, so I can’t fault her for that.

One thing I did enjoy was the Scottish accent and dialect. The author had me reading in the language and with the accent. I only wish I could have heard Rob and Gibson speaking, and kept wishing for a recording of them speaking. Writing the dialect into the story made it much more fun for me to read.

I would recommend this book to anyone, especially those who like Historical Fiction, and those who like fictional stories drawn from the Bible. I can’t wait to read the conclusion. I would think it would flow much faster since it will be about the remainder of the book of Ruth.
