An Ivy Hill Christmas is a novella continuing the Tales from Ivy Hill series from Julie Klassen. I was glad to once again enjoy more from this series. This book is about Richard, the wayward son coming home for the Christmas holiday, bringing not only a friend, but his new fury friend as well! It took me a while with Richard, he had such an obnoxious attitude it was difficult to like him at first. But he did grow on me and turned out to be a pleasant character. His trip home turned out to be quite different than what he thought.

I loved the olde fashion Christmas feel of this story, bringing back memories of when I was young. I enjoyed the characters and again Ms. Klassen does a wonderful job of bringing back characters we already know and adding a few more me meet for the first time. Even though this is a shorter story, I enjoyed this one so much, and as always was excited to read more from Julie Klassen. I encourage you to get a copy of this book and enjoy a wonderful and exciting great read for this Christmas time.

My fascination with England began as a girl when I read The Secret Garden and Jane Eyre, and watched A Christmas Carol. I have now been to Great Britain several times, and my affection for the place has only grown. I love the country villages with their stone buildings and thatched roofs, the narrow, winding roads (though not driving on them), the ancient churches, friendly people, plummy accents, and history. Writing fifteen novels set there has been a real pleasure.

An Ivy Hill Christmas includes all the elements of an idyllic Olde English yuletide: A charming village setting, snowfall, mistletoe, caroling, gifts for less fortunate neighbors, and festive gatherings of friends and family. I thoroughly enjoyed researching 19^th century Christmas traditions and weaving them into this novella.

In the story, a confirmed bachelor is determined to remain aloof from the celebrations going on around him—and from his mother’s matchmaking schemes. But divine hope, friendship, and unexpected romance change his heart…and his mind.  I love a transformation story; don’t you?

If you’ve read the TALES FROM IVY HILL series, you will enjoy returning to the village and spending time with favorite characters. But rest assured, the novella is a standalone, meaning you can enjoy it whether or not you’ve read the other books, as these reviews attest:

Sophia Dupont assists her father in his studio, keeping her own artwork out of sight. In private, she paints the picturesque north Devon Coast, popular with artists—including handsome Wesley Overtree, who seems more interested in her than the landscape.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK   

Wow! This is one of the best books I have EVER read! Yes! The Painter’s Daughter is really that good! Sophia’s story is so heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. Sophie Dupont’s father was an artist, and though Sophie spent so much time in his studio setting up his supplies and painting his backgrounds for him, she knew she would never be the painter her father was. But when Wesley Overtree shows up in town, he conveniences Sophie that she is a beautiful lady to paint. But was painting Sophie the real motives for this new artist has in mind?

At first, I liked Wesley and didn’t realize his ‘faults’ but as I kept reading, its clear where his heart is. Steven showing up brought an interesting twist to the story, and though the situation is not a normal one, I found it heartwarming and grew to have a special respect for Steven. The characters were easy to attach yourself too, and especially Sophie. Her situation was difficult handle, and with in-laws like Steven’s parents, my heart was aching for her. She clearly didn’t give herself the credit she deserved.

Sometime out life take a drastic change from what we thought or wanted it to be. But the God has different plans, and creates situations that change our life for the better. This is what happened with Sophie here in this story. Even though no one agreed with the twists and turns of her situation, I was really happy with this ending. And I am sure Sophie was too!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

This was my first book about a Dancing Master and I found it quite entertaining! When reading The Dancing Master, I found myself being taking back the Regency England, and I was surrounded by the people and atmosphere, the rich and those with not so much money. Julie Kasslen weaves together a story that will sneak into your heart and steal your attention, and won’t let go, even when you finish reading. I love the masterful way Julie Kasslen has of telling a story. When I saw the cover of The Dancing Master I knew I was in for a wonderful and awesome treat.

Julie was pretty much treated like a queen, but she surely didn’t feel like one. Her mom was so strict she would barely let Julie out of her sight, and the memories of her dad were ice cold and impersonal. It was only when she met the Dancing Master that she started feeling cared for. But the lady of the house was going to make sure the Master stayed as far away from her daughter as possible, and she sure wasn’t going to allow any dancing anywhere near her home. But things start falling apart when Julie started snooping in the attic and asking questions. And since I don’t like giving anything away, the rest is for you to find out when you read this really awesome book by Julie Kasslen.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Emma Smallwood and her dad have been invited to the Weston family’s Cornwall estate to tutor their two young boys. They tutored the two oldest two years before, but the new Lady Weston didn’t want to send her boys anywhere, so her husband decided to hire the Smallwood’s in house. The Smallwood’s were surprised on arrival that they were not expected, that Mr. Weston failed to let anyone know about them coming. And with the unwelcome they rec’d along with the secrets that seemed to pop up around every corner, well this was turning out to be an eventful stay.

I really enjoyed reading The Tutor’s Daughter. The characters were well created and they all seemed so real life all throughout the story. The plot keeps readers reading because there is so much going on. Starting the action with a big misunderstanding between Mr. Weston and Lady Weston, causing friction between everyone. Then all of the mystery and secrets that seem to be going on, and were there really ghost? Where else would all the night noises be coming from? And I loved the interaction between Phillip and Henry and Emma. Is it Phillip that is attracted to Emma, or would it be Henry? Or could it be the person sneaking into Emma’s room at night? Questions, questions! And they can all be answered in Julie Klassen’s new book, “The Tutor’s Daughter.” I highly recommend this book to you historical readers out there. And really, if you just want a good read, make this one your choice!

My Thoughts on this book!

This was my first book of Julie Klassen’s and I loved it! At first I thought it was just another story of the rich and famous, but then the surprising twist with Nora was humbling, and I was so intrigued that I couldn’t put the book down until it was finished. Needless to say I didn’t get a lot done that day! I will be watching for more of her books in the future.

I loved the characters created by Julie and the roles they played in the story made it so interesting and real! Lewis was the typical spoiled rich brat, where Nathanial had a head on his shoulders. Circumstances had also mellowed Nathanial and made him appreciate his home and family as well as not feeling better than the servants and help around the estate. Margaret/Nora was just a jewel! I was just on edge throughout the book wanting a rekindled romance between the two of them.

I was also intrigued with the insight of the maids and other servant’s jobs and responsibilities Julie so professionally wrote into the story. Her research defiantly comes to life in the pages of this book. All in all, it’s just an awesome book to read. A nice get-a-way back to the early 1800’s.

I also appreciate and enjoyed how Daniel, Margaret and other characters strived to look to the Lord for guidance in their everyday lives, depending on Him for everything they wanted to do. Though they struggled at times, they still had a heart for God.

I highly recommend this book for you to read and enjoy. You will NOT be disappointed at all. If you love historical fiction, and especially Christian  books, then this is the book for you to read!
