Read an Exerpt from One Woman Falling

I nudged Derrick’s arm, and he looked at me quizzically, a small gleam in his beautiful green eyes. I put my head gently on his shoulder, like I used to do, not so long ago—back in the days when he would caress my cheek, or run his fingers through my hair. How long had it been since he had shown me any sign of affection? Nine months? A year? All I wanted was for him to put his arm around me and say, “I love you and I’m sorry.” Those six words could save us.

Derrick pulled back from me, a tight smile on his face, the gleam in his eyes more intense. I waited. Expectant. Hopeful.

“Why don’t you make yourself useful and fetch me another beer?”

I slowly rose to my feet, the weight of a thousand rocks in my stomach. I brought him a fresh beer and set it on the coaster. He kept reading his magazine while I set the empty bottle aside, and carefully picked up the waterfall story. I’d take it away where the water ring could dry. Eventually, the words it blurred might reappear, and it would be whole again. If I was careful and kept it safe.

Because it was important.

Monday evening Derrick would be coming home to an empty house.

Excerpt

Chapter 13        Spring 1942

The train station teemed with soldiers and their sweethearts by the time Jim and Abby arrived. Her heart sank like lead under the weight of all the other goodbyes on the platform.

Jim drew her near. “I can see your aunt’s ballroom full of soldiers for one of her events. I’m jealous already.”

Abby tightened her grip around his waist. “Can’t foresee any competition.”

He stroked her cheek. “Just don’t let them hear you sing, and don’t smile too much.”

They went over the footbridge to the quieter side of the platform, keeping an ear out for the announcement of departure. She reached into her purse and handed him a small tinted photograph of them on her graduation day.

Jim broke the silence. “This is more painful than in January when I left for training.”

She nodded, the specter of separation hovering over them threatened to drain away the joy of the past ten days.

The train whistle blew and she jumped, legs trembling. She’d hoped to be prepared for their parting. But she wasn’t. She hated the Japanese for taking Jim away from her.

He snatched up his duffel bag and with his free arm grasped her hand. As they clattered up the metal steps and along the steel-walled gangway over the tracks, their footsteps echoed. Abby shrank from the cold, hard noise. A cloud of steam rose up and engulfed Jim. She tried to drag him back. He pressed on, pulling her behind him, his head turned away, as if heedless of the silent shriek inside her—please don’t go!

They stood together beside the train. “I wish you didn’t ha-ha-have to go,” she said, clasping his hand to the side of her face. Setting his cap straight, she stepped back and flashed a mock salute, determined to be strong for the sake of others here, all brought together by the sorrow of parting—but especially for Jim.

A tight, desperate embrace and a last kiss before Jim hopped onto the bottom rung. The conductor made an inspection of the platform before giving the “All Aboard.” Abby gripped Jim’s arm. Clutching his hand, she ran alongside the rolling train—taking him hundreds of miles away—until she fell behind and had to let go.

The train wiggled out and away from the platform. Long after it had shrunk to a pale silver dot on the blank horizon, Abby stared down the track, hollow inside and unable to will herself away. The crowd dissolved into its melancholy components, and she flowed out with them to the exit.

On her return home, she pulled the drapes across the window before dusk set in, then curled up in a chair, arms wrapped tight around the cushion. Had they made the right decision to wait until after the war to get married? Many of her former classmates were making wedding plans even now. Long after the first owl announced its presence and the chill of night settled in her body, Abby sat there. Not until the egg-yellow light of a new dawn filtered through the window shutters did she fall asleep.

Selah’s Stolen Dream Blog Blitz

Dream Horse Adventures Blog Blitz

Welcome to the Blog Blitz and Giveaway for Dream Horse Adventures series by Susan Count, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

Hello all! WELCOME to my blog. Today I am featuring book 4 in the Dreams of Adventures, Selah’s Stolen Dream. Hope you enjoy the excerpt.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Selah's Stolen DreamTitle: Selah’s Stolen Dream

Series: Dream Horse Adventures #4

Author: Susan Count

Publisher: Hastings Creations

Genre: Middle Grade Fiction

Release Date: October 13, 2016

One girl’s victory is another’s tragic defeat.

Thirteen-year-old Selah’s perfect life unravels when her beloved horse is stolen. Then ten-year-old Emma buys the dream of a lifetime at a horse auction. When she learns the horse was stolen, even removing her hearing aid won’t drown out the voice telling her to make it right.

But two girls can’t divide the horse they both adore. So will life surprise them with an answered prayer?

Excerpt from Selah’s Stolen Dream

Except for the dreary February weather, life was perfect. Absolutely, fantastically, completely—perfect. Today, my dreams could come true.

Today, Selah would show Sweet Dream in the biggest horse show in Texas.

And today might be the day she signed the movie contract for her and Dream to make a movie about their life. “You’re going to be a star,” she said to her reflection as she finger-combed her blonde hair and fixed a basic ponytail. “And Dream will be a famous horse star.” She imagined people wanting her autograph. She’d have to guard the horse so no one snipped a wisp of her pink mane.

It all started when her instructor, Jordan, made that training DVD of her riding lessons on Sweet Dream. When they posted it on social media, people quickly labeled it Cuteness Overload, and soon, it went viral. Then, after the wife of a movie producer watched Selah and Dream at an exposition, everything got supercharged. “Me—famous. Doesn’t feel real. Pinch me.”

On a day like today, she needed the perfect socks. It was a long- standing family conviction that mismatched socks were lucky. She hummed a happy tune as she tugged on one sock embellished with white unicorns and the other stamped with black horse heads. Balancing on the edge of the window seat, she admired her socks. “Sweet.” She tapped her toes, flipped them outward and together again.

Out her second-story window, two horses slept in the dormant Texas Bermuda grass with their legs tucked near their bellies, and Sweet Dream’s nose rested on the ground. The morning vapor shrouded the trees in wet mist while the sun gently lifted the night’s shade. When a sure sign of spring, a robin, dropped to the ground near Dream, she jerked awake. The glossy black mare threw her head high and lunged to her feet. A snort accompanied her panic.

Dream’s pasture mate, Buddy, rolled to his side and stretched out flat. The brown and white Paint was Grandpa’s old show horse. Less than a year ago, Selah tracked down the gelding and brought him home. She’d hoped Grandpa would ride with her, but he’d gotten remarried instead. It worked out. Selah’s family moved to the farm, and Grandpa and Grandma Katie lived on the farm next door.

Selah smiled at the rumble her two little brothers made scrambling down the stairs to breakfast. Living at the farm ballooned her heart with joy. She blew a kiss through the window to her equine pasture treasures.

The aroma of bacon drew her downstairs. The kitchen had gotten a fresh coat of paint, and, thank goodness, Mom had replaced Grandpa’s ancient, three-tiered puffed curtains. Eight- year-old Davy and five-year-old Michael crowded together on one chair. Their heads tilted back, they dangled a piece of bacon and chomped like alligators. When Dad frowned at them, they turned into little gentlemen. Mom slid eggs from a frying pan with her back to the comedy.

Dad gathered his coat and his keys. “We’ll drive in on Saturday and Sunday to see you show. Have fun, but stay close to Jordan. And please, take it easy on your grandpa.” When the phone rang, he gestured to Selah. “Pick that up, would you?”

“Bye, Daddy. Love you.” She waved at him. “Who would call so early?”

When she heard the movie producer’s voice, her grin widened, and she wiggled her toes in her lucky socks. She held her hand over the mouthpiece and whispered to Mom. “Miss Cindy.” She air-tapped at the phone like a woodpecker going after a beetle. Her mouth stretched wide in a silent scream.

Mom lifted Selah’s chin to close her gaping mouth. “Boys, go find something to watch on TV,” Mom whispered.

“For real?” Davy didn’t wait for her to change her mind. Michael grabbed a piece of bacon for each hand before he raced after his brother. Selah punched the button to put Miss Cindy on speaker so Mom could hear. “Contract! Today!” Selah’s fists pumped the air. Without breath, she could hardly push out her words. “It’s so exciting. We’ll be movie stars.”
“Are your parents available?”
“Yes, ma’am. Mom’s here. She can hear you.”
“Very good. When the contract arrives, your parents need to take it to a lawyer.”

Selah fanned her hand, imagining a movie star about to faint. “So exciting.”

“How did you get along with the script exploratory team?”

“We had tons of fun. They were crazy nice. They followed me and Sweet Dream around everywhere. Asked a million questions.” She managed to breathe so she could continue. “Interviewed Grandpa too. He doesn’t want to be in a movie but thought I was a natural. They thought Grandpa was a hoot and told me they got some great ideas.”

“You completely charmed them. They said your grandpa was quite the character, but they were enormously leery of the horse.” Cindy’s contagious laugh had a charm of its own.

“Sweet Dream and I understand each other. The team wants the movie to open with a scene about how I found Dream tangled in wire with the buzzards after her. I don’t see how that can work because Dream freaks at even the shadow of any bird—even a robin.” Selah rattled on while wishing her voice didn’t sound squeaky. She was a mature thirteen, but she sounded like a five- year-old shopping at the Breyer Model Horse Fest.

“They wouldn’t do anything to scare or injure her. They have their ways of getting the scenes they need. A stunt horse, trained to do specific things, will handle many of the scenes, anyway.”

She nodded along. “That makes sense.”

“They are working hard on final edits and expect to be ready to roll soon. I’m setting up the screen tests for an actress to play you. Especially excited about two young actresses who are excellent riders. Once this last of winter blows through, I’ll bring them to meet Dream before we finalize the selection.”

“To play me?” Selah’s spirit crumbled like burnt bacon bits. Her head itched right over her ear. “I thought—I would be me.” Once she started scratching, other spots needed the same treatment. “Not just anybody can ride Dream.” She sounded whiny now—worse than squeaky. “We’re buying your story, but I’ll hire a professional actress for your character. Besides, didn’t you tell me when you made the horse training DVD, your nerves were so bad the camera crew had to keep stopping?”

She sagged against the wall. “Well, yeah, but Mr. Cooper scared me before I got to know him. I don’t throw up during filming anymore.” I know I can do it.

Unless thirteen-year-old Selah can convince Grandpa she should live at the farm, her life is ruined. She’ll be forced to move hours from her horse and abandon her equestrian dreams.

Determined to stay, Selah must distract Grandpa from his new sweetheart. She searches for a painted dream horse from Grandpa’s past. But, Selah finds his old equine partner neglected and near death.

Then Grandpa reveals his life changing decision that tramples Selah’s plans.

Will the one thing that stood in Selah’s way become her saving grace?

Excerpt from Selah’s Painted Dream

“It’s so great to be here with you, Grandpa. Do you miss me when I’m gone?”

“Sounds like a loaded question. You’ve only been gone five days, but yes, I miss you.”

She flashed her sweetest perfect-teeth smile as she settled into her spot at the kitchen table. “Dad says our family has to move to Austin.” She dropped on him what she hoped was a shock bomb.

“Yes, I knew it was a possibility.”

Her voice shot up an octave. “You knew?”

“You’ll like living in Austin.”

The milk in her glass sloshed onto her hand. “How could I when it’s so far from you and the farm?”

“You’re going to have to find a way to make the best of it.”

“Why can’t I live here?”

Grandpa choked on his rice. “A girl your age needs to live with her family. Can you see the look on your brothers’ faces if you told them you were not moving with them?”

Ouch. “I hadn’t thought about that.” They would be upset. “But girls my age go off to boarding school and into training camps for the Olympics.”

“I’m too old to raise you. You’re a lot of work, you know.” Grandpa put a forkful in his mouth and stared at her.

“I sure would miss them. But you need somebody here with you.” She waved toward the refrigerator. “There isn’t even any food.”

“I don’t need much, and Katie feeds me dinner most nights.”

She’s the problem. “Katie feeds you.” Selah glared in bewilderment. You don’t need me?

Dream Horse Adventures Blog Blitz

Welcome to the Blog Blitz and Giveaway for Dream Horse Adventures series by Susan Count, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

Today I am featuring Book 2 in the Dream Horse Adventures, Selah’s Sweet Dream

ABOUT THE BOOK

Selah's Sweet DreamTitle: Selah’s Sweet Dream

Series: Dream Horse Adventures #2

Author: Susan Count

Publisher: Hastings Creations

Genre: Middle Grade Fiction

Release Date: December 15, 2015

Twelve-year-old Selah’s quest to be equestrian superstar is impossible without a horse. Then she spots buzzards circling in the grasslands behind Grandpa’s farm. They’re stalking a horse trapped in wire and Selah is its only hope. But the mare she rescues might be a bigger challenge to her dream than not having a horse at all.

An old friend of Grandpa’s and a world renowned horse trainer offers to work with the wild and defiant mare. Selah jumps at the opportunity. She trains with a fierce determination to equal the equestrian talent of the deceased grandmother who instilled the love of horse in her. But when the horse causes mayhem at the trainer’s facility, he sends them home. Selah must gather her courage and face up to the trainer or watch her dreams gallop away.

Excerpt from Selah’s Sweet Dream

Clouds slipped over the moon as if a child was playing with the lights of the world. One second it was dark like coal tar, and then almost bright enough to read a book. The clouds held no promise of rain, only beauty and entertainment. The whistle of the northbound train traveled crisply through the woods.

Selah sat curled up in a folding camp chair, just outside the stall but near the hay bucket. Her eyes were the only thing moving as she sucked in every detail, every movement, and every twitch of the black mare. Skunk slept soundly at the foot of the chair.

The mare stayed an easy, comfortable distance away from Selah all evening. Still, the horse’s eyes, and at least one ear, remained riveted on her new little friend with cream-colored hair.

“She is watching me, thinking carrots could appear at any time.”

Grandpa stared at Selah from the house and sighed. Stepping out on the porch, he tried to draw her into the house without putting his foot down too hard. “Selah, it’s time for bed. Come on in now.”

“Okay, Grandpa. I’m coming,” Selah answered without moving. “Just a few more minutes with my dream.”

From deep inside Selah, a yawn started and engulfed her whole being. With a Texas-sized exhale, she slipped from her chair onto the barn floor, where she nestled next to Skunk. Selah gathered under her head some of the hay that had filtered down from the net. The sleeping dog dreamed in the soft sand beside her. In spite of Selah’s great effort, she was losing the battle to stay awake. “What should I name you? Hum… You feel like a song in my heart,” she whispered as her eyes curtained.

Grandpa brought a small blanket out of the house for his sleepy girl. Selah kept her eyes closed and pretended not to hear him coming. Skunk raised her head as he approached. He rubbed under her chin, and then draped the blanket over a curled-up Selah. Selah’s cat, Pearl, drifted soundlessly toward the pile of sleepers in the sand to take her rightful place next to Selah. “Sweet dreams for now, girls. I’m afraid you’re in for broken hearts tomorrow.”

Mary’s Song Blog Blitz plus Giveaway

Dream Horse Adventures Blog Blitz

Welcome to the Blog Blitz and Giveaway for Dream Horse Adventures series by Susan Count, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

Today I am featuring book one of the Dream Horse Adventures, Mary’s Song

ABOUT THE BOOKS

Mary's SongTitle: Mary’s Song

Series: Dream Horse Adventures #1

Author: Susan Count

Publisher: Hastings Creations

Genre: Middle Grade Fiction

Release Date: October 13, 2016

A young artist falls in love with a foal that is lame, just like her. The expensive surgery the foal needs has little chance to correct the problem. Still Mary plots and conspires to raise money to save the horse, even as time runs out. She sacrifices what she holds dear – the trust of her papa, to gain her heart’s desire. But she could lose everything in her struggle to save the foal.

Excerpt for Mary’s Song

Twelve-year-old Mary waved and sailed a few carrot offerings over the fence to the gathered herd. They rushed to grab the bribe. With ears flattened, the horses jostled, shoved, and charged at one another to gobble the carrots. When the treats were gone, the mares went back to grazing. As the foals cavorted in circles around their dams, Mary inhaled the delight of being in their company. To draw a foal, she took a snapshot with her mind and sketched it in a great flurry. After capturing the likeness, she fussed with the details and the shading. A twine-wrapped portfolio she kept in her library bulged with sketches. Each sketch was a secret wish to ride, wild and free, someday.

She imagined herself cantering across a meadow polka-dotted with pink flowers. Her hair streamed behind her. Her arms held wide as if to soar. Her dream horse moved in response to her thoughts. A smile lifted and softened her face.

Mary shifted her useless legs to balance the sketchpad better. “It’s not just a dream.” The filly cocked her feminine head to the side and peered at the curiosity in the grass. Mary stared back, hoping the filly would hold the pose long enough for her to soak in every detail. The dark graphite pencil seemed to flow on its own, and soon the rough outline of the curious baby splashed across the paper.

“I will sketch you every minute until Papa comes home with my surprise. It might be—could be—a horse.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Susan Count

Susan Count is a life-long equestrian and owned by a Rocky Mountain Horse that is kind hearted enough to take her on long forested trail rides. She adores grandchildren, horses, and bunnies.

Instilled with the need to create, she loves building projects and writing adventure stories. She writes at an antique secretary desk that occupies a glass room with a forest view. Fittingly, it once belonged to the grandmother who introduced her to the love of reading via Walter Farley’s horse books. That desk has secret compartments which hold memories, mysteries, and story ideas.

Susan has published four books in an equestrian series. As a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, American Christian Fiction Writers, and Texas Association of Authors, she takes studying the craft of writing seriously. Revision is her super-power.

She says the only thing more fun than riding might be writing horse adventure stories and she invites you to saddle up and ride along. You can learn more about Susan’s work by visiting her website!

the brave art of motherhoodTitle: The Brave Art of Motherhood: Fight Fear, Gain Confidence, & Find Yourself Again

Author: Rachel Marie Martin

Publisher: WaterBrook

Release Date: October 9, 2018

Genre: Christian Living/Women’s Interest

Full-time FindingJoy.net blogger, speaker, marketer, podcaster, and single mom of seven, Rachel Marie Martin presents a wake-up call to those of us who have found ourselves stuck in the ‘I’m just a mom’ phase of life.

Yes, this book is about motherhood . . . but really, this book is about finding yourself again and following your passion WHILE being a mom. Inspired by her incredible story, Rachel’s words always come straight from the gut; they are visceral, real and soul searching. She challenges you to find the courage to break cycles, to take off masks and not let fear take control. This book is a balance of tough, “no excuses” ways of approaching life, while allowing breathing room and grace for yourself, for as we all know, life and mothering are not perfect.

After inspiring and conversing with thousands of women, Rachel has surmised there is always a reason to hope, to move forward and a reason to dare doing what you thought was impossible. (Yes, including what you are skeptical of accomplishing right now). She encourages you to say yes to your dreams and stop waiting for “someday” or “one day” or “when something happens”.

Prepare to change the way you think about yourself and your life. This will be a book you read over and over armed with a highlighter in one hand and a journal for introspection in another.

Nutfield, New Hampshire, is as good a place as any to hide from the murderer Harper left behind in Maryland. All she has to do is lie low and make enough money to keep herself and Red alive until she can figure out who her enemies are.

Jack Rossi is mystified by his beautiful new tenant and her confused grandfather. Something’s not right, but the love he sees between them and the care she takes of the old man convinces Jack they’re trustworthy. As drawn as he is to Harper, she’s his tenant, so she’s off limits.

Derrick, Harper’s ex-boyfriend and Red’s grandson, needs to find his grandfather and get his hands on the old man’s money before Derrick ends up with a bullet in the skull. And when he gets his hands on Harper, she’ll be sorry for what she’s put him through.

Author: Robin Patchen
Publisher: JDO Publishing
Genre: Romantic Suspense

Her beauty once opened doors, but the felony conviction now slams them shut.

Harper Cloud used to love the gilded glamour of Las Vegas, but on the far side of prison, she sees the cracks in the veneer. These days, she keeps her head down and focuses on the elderly patients in her care. Even her new wealthy east-coast boyfriend, Derrick, can’t entice her away. She’s trusted men before, andlook where that got her.

She tries to brush off the feeling that she’s being watched. She won’t allow a baseless paranoia to derail her life. But when she’s followed home one night, her pursuer gets within a hair’s breadth of grabbing her. She knows it’s time to get away from Las Vegas.

Maybe Derrick can be trusted. Maybe his job offer—to care for his aging grandfather in Maryland—will be the second chance she needs.

But Derrick has secrets of his own, secrets that could take him down–and take Harper with him.

Can there be a second chance for someone like her?

EXCERPT FROM BEAUTY IN FLIGHT

What about Derrick? He’d sworn he didn’t have expectations for their relationship, but she’d never met a man who didn’t give without expecting something in return. What would he expect from her?

Right now, he acted as if she were his lifeline. He called her every night before bed and again on his way to work every morning. Flew to Vegas to visit her every chance he got.

“You’re my anchor,” he’d told her. “My salvation.”

The words worried her. She could barely take care of herself. How could she be another person’s salvation?

And what did he need to be saved from?

Blog Blitz/Giveaway A Most Inconvenient Love

a most inconvenient love blitz

Welcome to the Blog Blitz & Giveaway for A Most Inconvenient Love by Ruth Logan Herne, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

ABOUT THE BOOK

A Most Inconvenient Love - Front CoverTitle: A Most Inconvenient Love

Series: Prairie Brides #1

Author: Ruth Logan Herne

Genre: Historical/Western Romance

Release Date: February 26, 2019

Sober businessman Seb Ward may have come from a wealthy lumber-baron family in Minnesota, but he knows that appearances can be deceiving, and that his illustrious family is pretty dysfunctional. Being in another state has provided the buffer he sought from his father’s misdeeds, but when a little boy shows up on a train… a little boy who looks enough like Seb to be his own child… Seb’s faced with a dilemma. Raise the boy as his own, or let his mother suffer the embarrassment of “a brother by another mother.” And when the boy takes a shine to the Rachel Eichas, the newly contracted school teacher, Seb can’t help but do the same.

But Rachel was raised by an unloving, business-first father and there’s no way she’s looking for those same qualities in a husband. Can she see through Seb’s focus and drive to find the loving man within?

EXCERPT

Seb’s next thought sprang to his father’s long list of indiscretions. Were there more children out there?

His temples throbbed at the thought. His mother, such a good, caring woman, always ready to help others. Did she suspect his infidelity? Did she care? Or had Cedric used up her sympathy over the years?

He looked up as they reached the corner. He paused, drinking in the sight before him. Rachel Eichas was talking to Nellie outside her brother’s wagon shop.

Simple beauty.

Nellie’s good looks flashed with her quick moves, her blond hair and bright dresses.

Rachel’s beauty shone in its more demure fashion, like the morning star. Not “notice-me” sharp, but warm and enticing. Peaceful.

She caught sight of him, watching her.

Fingers, long and tapering, went to her throat, as if unnerved.

She swallowed, and when Nellie followed the direction of her gaze, she smiled wide, as if surmising.

But there was nothing to surmise or expect. He knew that. He understood what wasn’t said. He’d set a name for himself in this town, he’d kept himself apart with grave intent, and the image he’d put forth was done with purpose. A businessman couldn’t be successful and easy-going. If he was, he didn’t stay in business long, especially in the cut-throat business of lumber these days. Tens of millions of board feet of lumber came out of Minnesota, with thousands of loggers cutting year-round. It was a business enjoying a huge upswing, but that upward arc of the pendulum wouldn’t last forever. Rising trends never did, and Seb had to be prepared for not only the seasonal rise and fall in sales, but the annual fluctuations. And now, a boy that looked just like him, added into the mix.
