Here Burns My Candle takes place in Edinburgh in 1745, with the Kerr family. Marjory lost her husband and is now living with her two sons and their wives, Lord Donald with wife Elizabeth and Andrew with wife Janet. This dysfunctional family has a lot of ups and downs, and so many secrets among them. As the story unfolds, we see the life of this family as secrets come to the surface, and with this, we see what the back of the book describes as……
A timeless story of love and betrayal, loss and redemption, flickering against the vivid backdrop of eighteenth-century Scotland. This was the same with the story of Ruth in the Bible, which is where Here Burns My Candle is drawn from. As the story unfolds, you can see Naomi and Ruth, though some parts are rather loosely told. Sometimes you need to use your imagination to realize its talking about the Story of Ruth.

It took me a while to really get into the story. After the war begins it gets more interesting. The entire book is based on the first 18 verses of Ruth….yes! That’s an entire book on 18 verses, so it is really slow going until about the last one-fourth of the book. It is a lot of background, getting to know the family, neighbors, friends and the Scottish setting.  Just a little bit too slow for my taste. But maybe the author wanted the readers to get that feel of Scotland, and to know the characters, so I can’t fault her for that.

One thing I did enjoy was the Scottish accent and dialect. The author had me reading in the language and with the accent. I only wish I could have heard Rob and Gibson speaking, and kept wishing for a recording of them speaking. Writing the dialect into the story made it much more fun for me to read.

I would recommend this book to anyone, especially those who like Historical Fiction, and those who like fictional stories drawn from the Bible. I can’t wait to read the conclusion. I would think it would flow much faster since it will be about the remainder of the book of Ruth.

Heartwarming story of two guy fulfilling their dream

This book follows the journey of Rick Burgess and Bill “Bubba” Bussey as they fulfill their dream of becoming radio hosts. This mostly true story takes place in the small community of Calhoun County, Alabama where the two live with their families, and how they became very popular host of their radio morning show.

One likeable thing about this book is how it shows what God can do to lives when we depend on Him. Through all of their struggles, Rick and Bubba never gave up. Instead they were determined to persevere, no matter what came their way. Another thing I like is the way they pursued their lifetime dreams because of their love for entertaining people through radio. They weren’t looking to get rich from their show…though they wanted to support their families. They didn’t care about popularity or perfection, they just wanted to have fun and make sure their listeners enjoyed their program.

The one thing I didn’t care for at first was the back and forth from tell Rick’s story to telling Bubba’s story, but then I guess that was the best way to tell about them both. It didn’t take anything away from their story, just had to remember what was going on with each.

I’d never heard of The Rick and Bubba show until I saw this book, and in reading the front cover, I just had to read and review it. The book was not only an easy read, but a very good book, taking only a day to read it. And even though I’ve never heard their show, after reading the book, I felt as though I knew them. They are just two fun-loving people letting God use them for His glory.

I do recommend this book to others. It is a fun Biography to read. You will laugh and cry enjoying this wonderful story of God’s love for us.

Book Review…..The Scent of Lilacs by Ann H. Gabhart

Jocie Brook and her father live in the small community of Hollyhill, Kentucky, along with her Aunt Love. Jocie’s dad David hopes to be called as part time pastor to the little church there. Though David is loved my most everyone there, he still struggles with a marriage that didn’t work. Aunt Love lives with him to help take care of his daughter, but her memory is failing, and she is getting so very forgetful that someone has to watch behind her to make sure she doesn’t burn food, or burn the house down.

Jocie has so many questions about her life. Why did her mother leave her, and never contact her? Did she really love her? Why did no one want to answer her questions about her mom? And what about Aunt Love, why didn’t she ever marry? Why did her scripture quoting Aunt always seem so sad?

As Jocie starts checking into the unanswered questions, she wonders if she really wants to find out what the real truth is.

Join Jocie and her family as they struggle through the truth that comes out, and as an unexpected visitor shows up at their door. Or is it a visitor?

This is a wonderfully told story by Ann Gabhart. I love the way she makes you fall in love with the characters, and you begin thinking about them as real people.  This is my first book by Ann, and will be reading the rest of her books. I highly recommend this book to read.

Book Review: When Sparrows Fall by Meg Moseley

Miranda Hanford‘s story sounds like what can happen to a person or family who is involved with a cult. The pastor of the church she attends not only wants to control her life and family, but her possessions as well. Thankfully being the strong women she is, she takes care of that just weeks before she had a horrible fall that landed her in the hospital, and out of commission for a while. The brother-in-law that she hardly knew was the person she thought best to take care of her children if anything happened to her.  So he received the surprised call from Miranda’s oldest son when they weren’t sure she would live from the fall.

With her pastor trying to manipulate her and control everything she has, and this new brother-in-law questioning her way of raising her children and opens up a little of the world to them, Miranda struggles to find the freedom, and safety for herself as well as for her children. All of this while she is still recovering from the almost life threatening fall she has taken. What will happen as Miranda continues to fight for her adorable family?

Miranda’s character is one you just have to fall in love with and adore. Through her character, Meg instills in us the importance of standing strong and being firm in our faith, and what we believe.  Especially when someone tries to make us someone we are not. Personally I think this is just a fantastic debut for Meg Moseley in When Sparrows Fall. Yes there are a very few things that could be different, but over all….it’s an Awesome read and I highly recommend it! I’m looking forward to reading more of her books.

Beverly Lewis: The Secret Book Review and Giveaway

Hey everyone! Since my blog is very new, I need to generate some traffic here, and I need lots of  subscribers to my blog. I want to review Christian Fiction books for as many publishers I can….so I need blog traffic! I appreciate your help!

And to say thank you….I am going to start giving away some of my book collection. These are not new books, but gently read books in very good condition. My first giveaway is the first book in Beverly Lewis’ series “Seasons of Grace”……”The Secret”. To win, all you need to do is leave a comment at the end of the post…..and tell me your favorite Author. I know we all have several…..you can list more than one. Thanks much for reading.

Here is my review:

I really like Beverly Lewis’ Amish fiction books. Usually it doesn’t take so long to get into the books, but this one took a little more time. Maybe it is the switching back and forth between the Amish family and an English family that makes it the story difficult to follow at first. However, after you really get into the story, it is worth the read. And the second and third books are even better.

Grace Byler’s Amish home was like most Amish home’s with the hard work in the fields for the men and their sons, and cooking, cleaning, gardening, canning and such for the women. But the difference in their home and a lot of other Amish home was Grace’s parents. Things were just not right between them, and really never had been. It seems that now, more than ever Grace’s mama Lettie is acting weird and very secretive. She has been seen and heard leaving the house in the middle of the night and roaming the fields, everyone is wondering why. Grace’s dat Judah refuses to admit something is wrong with their relationship. Grace’s Dawdi Jakob and Mammi Adah are acting a little funny too, not to mention the neighbors who have started talking. And neighbors talking and asking question in an Amish neighborhood is not good….news travels just too fast among the Amish.

What secrets could cause Lettie to be acting like this? And why is Judah not wanting to face the fact that something is wrong. And what about Dawdi and Mammi? Why are they acting a little funny, and maybe even afraid? Are there secrets they are not telling? And who is this English family, and why are they so important? And just what is Grace going to do about the situation?

Well….you will need to read the book to find out! It’s a wonderful read, and you will need to read the other 2 in the series as well to get the full story.

Don’t forget to leave a comment to win the book.  And make sure you leave your email so I can contact you. You will have 3 days to notify me after I email you. Contest will end March 26,2011. Sorry not international shipping.

God’s Wisdom for Mothers

I just love this little book of God’s Wisdom for Mothers. The author takes verses throughout the Bible that would have a special interest in the lives of Mothers and organizes them in categories and then sub-categories of the subject so mothers can have the verses at hand when needed.  The NKJV of the Bible is used in this book.

The Categories are: God’s Wisdom; The Crown of an Excellent Mother; God’s Wisdom with Children; God Teaches a Mother to Walk in His Word by; God Delights in Mothers Who Are; God Walks with Mothers; God Encourages each Mother to; God Teaches a Mother How to; God Gives a Mother… There are 3 to 10 subjects in each category, giving a wide variety of subjects to choose from.

Though I would never substitute this book or any other book for the Bible, I do appreciate books like this to help find verses pertaining to what a person is going through quickly. It is very well organized and would be a great resource for any mother.  It would also make a very nice gift!

Though my son is now grown, I enjoyed reading the verses, and look forward to using this book many times in the future. I think it is a book that would be used by any mother, or even grandmother of any age.

I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze.com book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 55.

Book Review: Head in the Clouds By: Karen Witemeyer

This was my first book by Karen Witemeyer, and I LOVED IT! I love her fun style of writing. I just couldn’t help falling in love with Adelaide and Gideon. Adelaide was fun, and spunky, but when she set her mind to something, she was bound and determined to do it! She was a gal that knew what she wanted, and wasn’t afraid to go after it, even though she might be a bit clumsy in the going. Going after what she thought was her man didn’t turn out like she thought it would. That’s what landed her at Gideon’s Sheep Farm interviewing for a job as Governess to his 5 year old daughter. Her mouth also seemed to get her into a lot of trouble too…..like in saying before you think! But it always seemed to turn out for her good.

Gideon…..well he was just adorable from the beginning. I loved him from the first time he saw Adelaide  in the barn. Though his and Adelaide’s first few meeting were kind of awkward, he seemed to adore her from the beginning. I just loved Karen’s way of bringing them together in a fun enjoyable way that made you just want to keep reading to see what would happen next. But would Gideon hire Adelaide over the two older and more experienced ladies that were also at the farm for the interview? Even though Adelaide had taught school for a few years, was she capable of taking care of this 5 year old that couldn’t speak?

I admired both Gideon and Adelaide’s relationship with the Lord, and their willingness to seek Him in every decision they needed to make. The way they trusted the Lord when Isabella’s uncle came to claim the child and her inheritance.

This was only Karen Witemeyer’s second book, but I had to check her website again to make sure she had only written 2 books! She truly writes like an experienced writer, and I will sure be reading her first book “Tailor-Made Bride” and also her third book “To Win Her Heart” coming in April 2011.

You can find Karen here:   http://www.karenwitemeyer.com/books.html

Book Review – Sister of the Quilt By: Cindy Woodsmall

First of all, I fell in love with the characters in this book, and though its been a while since I read it, I still think about them!!  I plan to read these books again soon.

Hannah Lapp found herself in a tragic situation, with no help or support from her Amish family. Her boyfriend thought she was lying to him, she had nowhere to go or turn to, forcing her to leave her Amish town into a lifestyle she knew nothing about.

Hannah’s brave and courageous attitude helped her to survive life in the outside world. With the new people she met, and one long lost family member, she was able to find a job, support herself and make it on her own.

But was she happy? Did she miss her plain Amish lifestyle? Did she miss her family, and would they have her back if she came back?  What’s happened to her boyfriend? Did he go on with his life and forget about her?

Well you will just have to read the book to find out!!

These 3 books in the Sister of the Quilt Series are truly one of the best series I have ever read!!  Cindy Woodsmall has a real masterpiece in this series. She is a fairly new author, and her books are awesome!  I love her writing, and will be reading her other books and reviewing on this site as well!

If you haven’t read this series, and if you like Christian Fiction, this is a must read for you. And if you like Amish Fiction…..well you just gotta get them now!!

Thanks much for taking your time to read my reviews.

Thomas Kinkade/ Katherine Spencer…Cape Light Series

I decided to do a Review on all of the Cape Light Series since there are so many already. I had so much fun reading these books! Hope you enjoy the review. I also list some places you can purchase them at the end of the post

I first heard about this series through Crossings Book Club. The pictures on the book cover are enough to make me purchase the book. Of course you would need to like Kinkade’s paintings to say that!

The series takes you to a little seaside town of Cape Light, where everyone knows everyone,  neighbors help neighbors, it’s just a likeable town with likeable people…….and then there’s  Lillian. Lillian is the mother of Emily the Mayor or Cape Light, and Jessica, who has returned to help take care of an ailing mother. There’s always a Lillian in all little towns, and Cape Light really needs this character to spice up the book a little. It all can’t be perfect!

You can’t help but fall in love with the character in the series. There’s Emily the town Mayor and her sister Jessica who can never please their mother.  And of course there is Sam Moore, the drop dead gorgeous handyman that has an eye on Jessica. Is she too high class for him? And there is the Mayor’s secret……will people forgive her when they find out about her past? And there’s Lucy and Charley, The Potters, Molly, Rev. Ben and wife Carolyn, Dan, and more that have lived in Cape Light most are all of their lives.

Along with the old time characters, Kinkade and Spencer continually brought in new characters throughout the series that added to the town of Cape Light. Some didn’t stay so long, others fell in love, married and made their home there. The authors just have a way of keeping the story moving and interesting in each book. I love all of them! They are must keeps for me, either to lend out or read again if the notion hits me!

If you are looking for a nice comforting, relaxing, calming read…..these books are for you. Some of the story lines might be predictable, but ok, we can stand that too!

One of the best things about this series is, it shows that books can be awesome reads without the violence, sex, crime, and craving material things. I like the way that they authors show that our relationship with God is the most important thing. And that even though life doesn’t always go the way we think it should, we can depend on God to get us through.

If you haven’t read this series, I highly recommend them. They are great reads as the Christmas Season begins. Just calms you down a bit during  the rush and hassle.

Busy Times

I really started this blog in the middle of busy times for me. We lost our mom Sept 16, 2010…and its been so difficult getting use to being without her. She was not only our mom, but our best friend! She’s now in Heaven with her Lord…and that’s just what she told the Dr. the night of the 15th when he told her she wouldn’t live through the night…that she would wake up with her Lord. What a testimony for your last night on earth! She’s also reunited with our dad and many other family that is now with the Lord.

We have been going through her things, cleaning out, and cleaning up for the past few weekends. This is a bitter-sweet time. Its sad, but yet it gives us a peaceful closing in going through her earthly things. I was able to get a Bedroom Suite which I am loving. But its been a trial getting my extra room cleaned out and getting everything of her’s in the room.

For these reasons, I’ve not been able to post a lot on my blog. I will try to post some book give aways…and add sites to the sidebar so you can find some good Christian Fiction.

Until then….Hope you have having a great time reading!

Blessings to you…..Joy

My Soul To Keep spotlight By:Davis Bunn

Product Description

An entrepreneur from Poduncksville with a vision teams up with an actor just out of prison and a has-been scriptwriter–is their effort truly inspired or doomed from the start?

A true star in every sense of the word, Brent had arrived–more enthusiastic fans with each new movie, a host of friends among Hollywood’s elite, and more money than he could spend. He didn’t even notice the signals of the downward spiral that ended in a terrible accident…and six long years in prison.

But God finds Brent, and it is in prison he is transformed. On release, he sets himself up with a small lawn service business and volunteers his experience and acting skills with a local theatre group.

Celia had thought the inner and outer scars left by the accident were far beyond forgiveness–how could she ever find it in her to absolve Brent simply because he asks?

A Christian businessman, Bobby Dupree has a string of entrepreneurial successes behind him. Then he is challenged with another venture–one that puts him squarely in the middle of an industry totally foreign to his experience. How can he make this story into a film when he doesn’t even know where to begin?

Thus begins an odyssey bringing some very unlikely people together to do something bigger than any of them could have imagined on their own. Their endeavor pits faith and vision against unlimited money and power thrown against this new upstart company from Nowhere called Shoestring Productions.

From Publishers Weekly

In this page-turner reminiscent of The Devil Wears Prada, Bunn alternates between the story of Brent Stark, an Oscar-winning actor and recovering addict who has converted to Christianity in prison, and Shari Khan, a Hollywood underling looking for her big break. When a Nashville-based businessman decides to start a film company, he asks Brent to direct the first movie—a Daniel Boone biopic that eschews political correctness and returns Boone to the pedestal. Conversely, Shari uses knowledge of this independent venture to catapult herself to the upper echelons of the major studio where she is a lowly personal assistant. Soon enough, she is spearheading efforts to get the studio’s own Boone biopic, one that vilifies Boone and sympathizes with Native Americans, released first. Bunn’s treatment of the ensuing David and Goliath drama is well-paced and entertaining. This novel, like the Christian film at its center, provides an alternative for conservative Christian audiences looking for entertainment that reaffirms both their political and theological values. The Hollywood insiders here are self-serving criminals who cynically promote liberal values in their films, while the Christian filmmakers are stratospherically successful, wealthy, and the beneficiaries of many miracles, all of which affirm that God is in their corner. While not to all tastes, this novel is sure to please fans and increase Bunn’s readership. (Sept.)
