Book Description:
The Wilderness Spa brings people from three quite different sources together to survive catastrophe in the Alaskan wilderness. They amaze themselves in their ability to coalesce and work cohesively in the face of hunger, injury, insecurity, and possible death. With that on their minds, they explore statistics, logic, social justice, and challenges to philosophies and social norms.

After rocky starts when new members enter the group, they learn to find the best in their fellow travelers, how to help, follow, and lead when necessary. Nothing is ever easy. Without attacking each other, they dig deep to reconcile their differences.

Join the group as they make the best of what they have. Struggle along with them and reconcile your own philosophical belief systems with logic and science.

In The Wilderness Spa Jim Halverson takes readers on a unique journey through the Alaskan wilderness. An earthquake throws together a unique group of people from all walks of life, struggling to survive. I was intrigued by the way these people steps up to the plate and strives to help each other out. This is truly an interesting group of characters. I love the Alaska setting and the vivid details of this part of Alaska. I’m not so sure I would enjoy being in their situation, but the scenery is beautifully described and give readers a feeling they are right there with the characters as their story unfolds. I think perhaps my favorite character here is Tom, because he does such an awesome job of leading this group to survive. This was not always an easy task because of the group of people involved. All in all I find The Wilderness Spa an intriguing read that I feel anyone can enjoy. This one is Four Stars for me. If you love books full of outdoor adventure I encourage you to check this book out. I think you will find Wilderness Spa a very interesting book to read.

Author Interview – Jim Halverson, Wilderness Spa

You obviously have some knowledge of the Alaska wilderness. How did you do the research for this book?

The most valid research for Wilderness Spa came from a lifelong quest to understand human psychology. Regarding the physical environment, I spent two weeks on a river rafting trip in the Alaskan wilderness, climbed on several glaciers, and hiked in Denali National Park.

One line in the book states, “It’s got to be about breaking the cycle of ignorance.” How is that germane to survival in the wilderness?

The subtitle of the book is, Where physical survival meets psychological survival. The travelers did not leave their civility and intellectual quest for truth in the garage when they left home.

In addition to Wilderness Spa, I know of your first book Trials and Trails. Do you have any upcoming books?

My next book will be released soon. Ponce – What actually happened at the Fountain of Youth is a satirical look at the life of Ponce de Leon. Ponce is a book I always wanted to write since I was in grammar school.

Many books question religion. One of your fireside discussions centers on religion. Is this book another attack on religion?

On the contrary, some participants question the scientific origins of Christianity. When one participant objects and asks, “What if I want to believe . . .,” he is provided with a legitimate method to maintain his beliefs without rejecting scientific facts.

Most of us have a desire to return to a place or time in history. Let me put a twist on that. Do you have a place or time that you think is highly overrated?

That’s interesting. Let me give you a place I would go first. That would be the Golden Age of Greece where critical thinking developed. To answer your question; there are plenty to choose from – the Dark Ages, wars, conquests, and plagues. However, I think the most overrated period belongs to us right here in our own wild west. Between the end of the Civil War and the Gay Nineties many of us visualize an unrestrained open range with buffalo roaming the prairies where independent men and women worked hard and tamed the wilderness. The truth is that the Native populations were being subjected to horrible conditions. Bank robbers, gun fighters, rustlers, and horse thieves, many of whom suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, made the American West a horrible place to live during that period.

Black Flag Journals: One Soldier’s Experience in America’s Longest War

by Dennis Woods

GENRE: Memoir

The story of America’s longest war is complicated and difficult to convey, unless you were there. Dennis Woods was there. By following his stories in Iraq and Afghanistan, we can sense the enormity of his combat experiences. Originally written for his daughter, Black Flag Journals is taken from the author’s nine battle book journals. It covers his time from the fall of the Twin Towers through his last combat tour.

Black Flag Journals contains not just stories from the first war of the new century, but a day-by-day record of events that other veterans may use to relate their own experiences. All who enjoy real life stories, and followers of history will connect with this first person account of America’s longest war.

INTERVIEW 11 Dennis Woods, Black Flag Journals, one soldier’s experience in America’s longest war

What are your favorite TV shows? It was House, now Law & Order SVU

What is your favorite meal? The married man’s answer is whatever she makes. The reality is that I’m easy to please so everything’s good.

If you were to write a series of novels, what would it be about? The series I’d like to do was already written. So, for this question it’s screenplay scripts for the book series titled Casca. It opens on a scene of the crucifixion of Christ and the Roman Legion soldier named Casca who runs a spear into Jesus becoming covered in his blood. The act makes him an immortal soldier until the second coming of Christ. As a writing foil the author, Berry Sadler was able to place the character in any historical event he chose.

Is there a writer you idolize? If so who? That’s a shifting target as it scrolls from, Tom Clancy to Hemmingway to Bill Oreilly.

How did you come up for the title of this book? I chose the words Black Flag as in Islam black is the designated color for Jihad. That’s why a black flag is so prominent in many extremist execution videos. The line Journals was taken from the fact that my battle experiences were recorded in a series of 9 battle book journals that I kept for my daughter. The subscript One Soldiers’ Experience in America’s Longest War represents lawyer speak. I was still on active duty when I published so I needed clearance. While the process redacted a few things, it helped clear some legal obstacles.  In full the title is Black Flag Journals, One Soldier’s Experience in America’s Longest War, Koehler Books publishing available on Amazon, B&N online, Books-a-million, Wallmart.com. Hard cover, soft, eBook & audioBook. As the books have been out for a while one can also find 1st and 2nd editions in thrift bookstores.

Excerpt One:

The flight we were on this morning was an ordinary, run-of-the-mill resupply operation. Its purpose was to service Afghanistan’s numerous small camps and bases. What it carried, though, was not ordinary or run-of-the-mill. What we were delivering was an unusual allotment of artillery ammunition and GELON mounts. Part of my mission on this trip was about to be completed. However, once in the air, I was given a new defensive challenge to solve.
