Tour and Giveaway for City of Lights by Kelly Byrd

City of Lights

(Book 1 in the Far from Home Series)

by Kelly Byrd

GENRE: Middle Grade Fantasy

What happens when oh so ordinary Mary Jingo, follows her instincts (and her nose) and ends up in a magical land Far From Home?

In City of Lights, author Kelly Byrd introduces readers to Mary, who is one week away from finishing fifth grade. Mary’s mind is on starting middle school in the fall and finally getting her own phone. But then this ordinary girl notices glimmers of light and meets a strange little man who conjures the best smell she has ever smelled. Before she even stops to consider what she’s doing, she agrees to accompany the man to the land of LeeChee, where our Mary Jingo from the Shadowlands in seen as warrior and a great hope.

Now this very ordinary girl must find a way to help save LeeChee from Thrall and restore the Everything—a magical life- and joy-giving force that somehow connects Mary’s world to LeeChee. How can she face the Void, the foul-smelling Shoeboxians, or the evil Mellie? And how can she do all of the Far From Home?

The sun rose brightly the next morning, shooting green sparks off the grass. The light played games with itself, rolling and tumbling around the campsite in the forms of animals and birds. Bobble and Mikeala jumped up, squealing gleefully to chase the sprinting forms, as pure dawn was one of the few times when the Everything was still able to be clearly seen.

Mary Jingo lay wrapped in a blanket that Van Clare had pulled out of her backpack, in that thin space between sleep and waking. She had laid awake for a few hours the night before, listening to Van Clare’s breathing and Mikeala’s and Bobble’s occasional giggles as they kept watch from the mouth of the cave. She tried to fit the pieces together like a puzzle of everything she had learned so far about this strange place. That a connection exists between her world and this one. She had been chosen by some mysterious force, or she had chosen this mysterious force (that sounded a lot like THE Force, if she were honest) to come help the People of this world. The Everything was shrinking because People wouldn’t leave their houses. The Everything sounded vaguely like Mary’s mom, who constantly complained that everyone spent too much time on their phones, or in front of their screens. Mary’s dad would then agree and head down the hall to his study to do research on the internet about ecommerce.

Mary accepted now that this was not a dream, but that did not mean that she was up to the task in front of her. She could think of seven to twelve of her classmates who were braver or better suited to this task than she was. She had pushed up her pajama sleeve and rubbed her thumb over the purple spot on her wrist. She wondered how she had ended up here, of all places. Someone like her—so ordinary. She had fallen asleep then, her brain overwhelmed by all of it and had whispered to herself that maybe this time she would wake up in her own bed. So, maybe she was still not wholly convinced about the dream thing.

“Mary Jingo?” Van Clare said gently, touching Mary lightly on the shoulder. “You need to get up. We need to move to another camp before nightfall.”
