Book Description:

“IT TAKES A DIFFERENT KIND OF THINKING TO SOLVE A PROBLEM THAN THE KIND OF THINKING THAT PRODUCED THE PROBLEM.” —Albert Einstein

JJ had a devastating problem. At age fifty-one, he was diagnosed with stage four cancer and given three years to live. Rather than accept that outcome, JJ did what he always does: he set out to find a solution. Desiring to look beyond traditional treatments and their often harmful side effects, he put his unconventionally wired mind to work. JJ was relentless as he investigated alternative therapies and pursued global trailblazers in cancer research. Moving from the role of patient to patient-researcher, he became a trailblazer in his own right, being sought after for his latest findings. Ultimately, JJ brought together the most innovative international minds at the Rethinking Cancer 2017 conference in Paris. Together, they found common ground, and they continue to create integrative, synergistic approaches to treatment. Today, almost a decade after his diagnosis, JJ has defied the odds and is cancer-free. Recently retired from his career as a commercial airline captain on the Airbus A380, he now devotes himself to sharing his ongoing research with scientists and patients. JJ’s story illustrates how looking at things differently often enables us to see them in a whole new light.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

In this book, FLYING AGAINST THE ODDS authors Jean-Jacques Trochon with Heather Whitehall-Trochon tell of the plan Jean-Jacques Trochon Discovers after he finds he has cancer and only a few years to live. Trochon was determined to find a way of healing, and he shows us he did just that in Flying Against the Odds.

There are a lot of interesting things in this book. Like going twelve days with nothing to eat and only water to drink. I would like to try this, but getting to day five seems like it’s rough. But I still may just try it. Trochon finds access to a ton of people that has helped him in his research along the way. But a lot if it is just trial and error, just like the 12 day fasting to be free of tumors, which was shocking to his Dr. And all throughout this book you will find interesting things that Trochon has found along the way as he keeps researching. I also enjoyed him telling about his career as an airline pilot and how he got started. I encourage you to check this book out. If you have had cancer or know someone who has, this book may be a big help to you. But if you haven’t had to deal with the C word, you will still find this book interesting and helpful.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

And now lets hear what the author has to say!

  • You have had a distinguished career as an airline pilot. If you had chosen a different career path, what would it have been?

Biology was my favourite subject at school. I have always had a mind that likes to explore topics in greater depth. I would probably have been a researcher, had I not followed in my father’s footsteps. However, I feel privileged to have had an incredible career as an airline captain, finishing up by flying the Airbus 380, the world’s largest passenger plane. I am one of very few pilots to have experienced such an aircraft. Recently retired, I am now able to devote my time to helping other cancer patients via my website: https://jeanjacquestrochon.com

I feel lucky to be able to pursue a second rewarding career, one in which I am able to collaborate with some of the leading doctors and scientists from the world of alternative medicine.

  • You clearly had a very powerful bond with your father. How do you think he would react if he knew about your book?

Dad was very supportive of everything I did. I know he would have been unbelievably proud. I dedicated my book to him because he was my mentor throughout life. As well as being father and son, we had the bond of flying. One of my most valuable possessions is the gold ring that dad received upon graduating from the American Air Force. He gave it to me as he was dying. This ring now sits proudly upon the third finger of my right hand, just as it once did upon his. As I describe in Chapter 17, Flying High Again, I often ‘spoke’ to my father during those long, lonely hours in the cockpit. It was there, up above the clouds, that I most strongly felt his presence, guiding me safely home in that big silver bird.

  • Name one famous person who you would have liked to have met and why?

In reading my book, it will become clear that I have a deep-rooted love of South Africa and its people. The one person whom I would have loved to have met is the country’s former president, Nelson Mandela. There is much to admire about this great man, who was even able to show compassion to the very people who had held him captive. He was an incredible leader and an inspiration to all those who have suffered injustice.

  • You live in Biarritz, in the French Basque Country. What do you enjoy most about your chosen place of residence?

Biarritz is often referred to as French California, on account of its magnificent surfing beaches and relaxed way of life. We are walking distance from the ocean, a short drive from the mountains and just a stone’s throw from neighbouring Spain. I feel privileged to call this unique part of France my home. Proximity to the ocean definitely lifted my spirits whenever I came home from hospital following surgery. This experience is described in Chapter 7, Together we are an Ocean, in which being able to surf marks a turning point in my healing journey. Something very powerful happens to me at the end of this chapter, some kind of spiritual experience. However, I don’t want to give too much away!

  • You finished your schooling in America. What do you remember most about this time in your life?

I have fond memories of my time in America. The educational system placed a lot of importance on sport, which is not the case here in France. This approach really suited me, since I wasn’t the most academic of students. Back then I was good at soccer and was even chosen to captain Ohio’s All-Star team. It was here that I learned the value of teamwork, and forged friendships that I still have to this day. Oh, and l also remember eating the best donuts ever. Happy times! 😉

Meet the Authors:

Jean-Jacques Trochon (or JJ as he is more commonly known) spent thirty-two years as a commercial airline pilot for Air France. A French national, he enjoyed an early childhood in Tahiti before finishing his schooling in France and the USA. In 2003, JJ was diagnosed with aggressive kidney cancer and subsequently underwent the removal of his left kidney. In 2012 and 2014, he underwent further surgeries following the discovery of multiple metastases in both lungs. Despite being given a slim chance of survival, JJ again returned to work in 2016. He captained the world’s largest commercial aircraft, the Airbus A380, until his retirement in spring 2020. Today, Jean-Jacques devotes his spare time to helping other cancer sufferers and spreading the word about his revolutionary approach to the disease. He was the initiator of Rethinking Cancer 2017, a groundbreaking conference held in Paris on September 21, 2017, at Institut Gustave Roussy, the leading cancer center in Europe.

Heather Whitehall-Trochon is a lover of languages and translator of French and German into English. A British national, she completed studies in fashion journalism at the London College of Fashion before moving to Munich, Germany, where she worked in public relations for fashion and film. After relocating to Vienna, Austria, she had a brief stint as an editor at the Associated Press, prior to becoming a freelance translator and seasoned backpacker. Heather met JJ in Paris in 2007, marrying him the following year. The couple, together with their cat, Zulu, have now settled in Biarritz, France.
