Sarah Esh’s peaceful life turns upside down one afternoon when a parachutist crash-lands on her family’s farm. The stranger insists his life is in danger and begs her to keep his presence secret. Sarah’s promise tangles her in a web of deceit that endangers innocent people, ruins her best friend’s reputation, and tears apart the Amish community. After she discovers the man’s true purpose, Sarah must confess her mistake and repair the damage she’s done. But how can she admit the truth to Jacob Zook knowing it will end their relationship?

Although he was jilted by Sarah’s older sister, Jakob finds himself attracted to Sarah’s kindness and honesty. Her innocence and gentle spirit encourage him to open his heart. Then he discovers the deep secrets Sarah’s been hiding—secrets that destroyed his family and now threaten their love.

Im dead

This Amish story starts off quite different than most I have read. A Gift From Above is the second book in this series and it features Sarah, the more shy one if the Esh family. But when a flying man lands on their property near Sarah, her life certainly makes some drastic changes. For one, this stranger wants Sarah to keep it a secret that he is there. But that proved to be the wrong thing to do.

I love Rachel Good’s Amish books because they take a twist from other Amish stories I have read. This one captured my interest from the start, from the parachutist landing in the Esh yard, to the lies that were told, to the real answers, this story takes readers on a journey that will keep you on the edge if your seats and keep you guessing until the end.

And though I enjoyed all of these amazing characters created by Ms. Good, Sarah and Jakob are my favorite. Sarah has such a kind and caring heart that shows throughout this book just as did the super nice guy Jakob is show. Overall this is a sweet Amish read with twists that make it quite the mystery. If you enjoy Amish, you will enjoy this one.

A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Snippet from the Book

Edlyn worked down a swallow and forced herself to ask the one question she dreaded most. “Maddock, you do not…I mean, do you suspect the reason for the teenagers’ absence is…

“Because of Raelin?” Maddock removed his hand from her shoulder and set it on the hilt of his dagger. “As I said, we need to leave for the capitol without delay.”

A shudder ran down Edlyn’s spine. “I will meet you at the end of the lane in thirty minutes.”

Snippet 2

All was silence. Maddock released Edlyn’s hand and began turning slowly in a circle to survey the clearing. Edlyn dropped her hands to her knees and bent at the waist, working to catch her breath. Harper collapsed shakily against a tree, her face pale and her eyes wide. Peyton wearily wiped the perspiration from his brow with one hand while placing the other on the hilt of his axe.

After a long time, Edlyn stood up straight and joined Maddock in taking in the sight of the unknown forest that encircled them. She shivered as the reality of their situation sunk in.

They were alone. They were lost. And they were fleeing from a cursed army that they could not fight and did not know how to defeat. The final war against Raelin had begun.

Author Interview for Library Lady’s Kid Lit

1. When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

I first knew I wanted to be an author in early elementary school. I loved writing stories, and I was always filling up pages and pages of notebook paper with my tales. My elementary school teachers were very kind to frequently invite me to read my stories to the class. I’ll always be grateful for those teachers’ influence and encouragement.

2. When you are not writing, what other hats do you wear? What do you do for fun?

When I’m not writing, some of the things I enjoy are playing the piano, singing, riding my bike, talking my dog on walks, spending time with my husband, working in the garden, stargazing with my telescope, reading (of course!), and traveling as much as I can.

3. Who did you have in mind as you wrote the book?

With THE KEEPER OF NERETH, and the entire Nereth trilogy, I was writing for early teen and mature tween readers. I remember being that age and getting swept up in wonderful books, such as the Chronicles of Prydain, Anne of Green Gables, and The Phantom Tollbooth. One of my main motivations for deciding to write professionally, in fact, was to provide that age group with the same types of wholesome, wonderful stories like I grew up with. It’s something that’s important to me, and it truly makes my day when I hear from a young reader who loved one of my books.

4. As a former K-12 school librarian I have to ask – what is your favorite children’s book?

Tough Question! I don’t know if I could pick an all-time favorite children’s book! Some of my favorites over the course of my elementary school years include those mentioned above, such as anything by LM Montgomery, the Phantom Tollbooth, and the Chronicles of Prydain. I also loved The Westing Game, Beverly Cleary’s books, and Matilda. I could go on and on!

5. What advice would you give to a child or teen who wants to be a writer?

Do it! Don’t be shy. Write down the stories that are in your head, and have fun. And keep writing . . . like any other skill or talent, the more you do it, the better you get!
