Formula for a Perfect Life By Christy Hayes Christian New Adult Contemporary Romance Paperback & ebook, 323 Pages March 30th 2020

Two practical strangers. One fateful night. Two pink lines.

College senior and obsessive romantic Kayla Cummings’ dreams of a storybook life are spun off course by an unplanned pregnancy after a one-night stand with her secret crush. Devastated, Kayla turns to her roommates and best friends for advice. No matter what she decides, no matter how deeply embarrassed, she has to tell the father.

Ben Strickland’s future is written in stone—as long as he gets a decent score on the Law School Admission Test. Feeling pressure from all sides, Ben struggles to juggle his upcoming finals, another shot at the LSAT, and his needy girlfriend Darcy. When the girl he spent a memorable night with weeks ago shows up at his doorstep pregnant, his already chaotic life spins out of control.

With the clock ticking, decisions to make, and a boatload of people to disappoint, Ben and Kayla embark on a journey neither anticipated—a journey where falling in love might be the biggest surprise of all. But when old hurts and buried secrets pose a greater threat to their future than impending parenthood, will Ben and Kayla go their separate ways or forge a new path to happy ever after?

“This exhausted sick phase is going to pass.” Her mom’s voice was soft and careful. “When it does, your body is going to change. You’ll have ultrasounds at your appointments—probably at your first—and at least one more after that. You’ll be able to hear the heartbeat, see the baby grow, watch it wiggle its fingers and toes, eventually feel it kick and move. There’s an amazing connection between a mother and her unborn child that happens long before the baby’s born.”

Kayla watched her mom’s expression turn introspective, watched her own hand move over her stomach, watched her mom regard her with seeking eyes. “This isn’t helping.”

She placed a hand on Kayla’s arm. “I know you. I know your soft and tender heart. As much as you’d love to wrap this baby up in a neat little bow and present it to a family who desperately wants a child of their own, I don’t see you walking away. Since abortion is off the table—and Dad and I are proud of you for making that choice—his reaction the other night was shock—the only option left is to keep the baby.”

“I know that.”

“You know what?”

“I know I probably can’t give the baby away. I love the idea of it. I’ve looked at some websites. I know there’s a need.”

Kayla played with the hem of her shirt, rolling and unrolling it between her fingers. “I’m going to get attached. Even knowing it’s the right thing to do, I don’t think I can give it away and live with myself. I’d always wonder. I’d always miss it. I’d never recover.”

Jessica’s grip tightened. “Tell Ben. Stop pretending you’ve got options and start talking reality. You’re going to have a baby. You live here. He lives hours away. You’re going to be noticeably pregnant at school. You need to figure out how this is going to work for both of you. The sooner the better.”

Kayla blinked back tears and tried to swallow the grimy grit of regret. “I’m sorry, Mom. I know you and Dad are so disappointed in me.”

Her mother sighed and her shoulders drooped. “We’re disappointed, sure, but we’ll get over it. Right now, we’re worried. Pregnant and unmarried at twenty-one isn’t what we’d hoped for you, but it’s not the end of the world. No matter the circumstance, a child is a blessing. We’ll make do. We’ll figure things out. You’re not alone.” She sat up straight and tilted her head, a sure sign she’d saved the best for last. “But honey, Dad and I are not going to step in and take over. You and Ben got yourselves into this mess, and you and Ben need to come up with a solution.”
