EXCERPT

They stepped outside and descended the stairs down to Alex’s small, private porch. Dia was just coming out the front door with a pitcher of lemonade and a basket sure to contain homemade sweets she set on her antiqued patio table. Tonight was the weekly knitting get-together she hosted. She’d invited Alex more than once, but there was nothing like the thought of joining a knitting club to make her feel like a spinster.

“Alex,” she said cheerfully when she looked up. Her gaze drifted to Riley and then back to Alex, sparkling with curiosity.

Alex paused with Riley at her side. “This is Riley Conrad. We work together and . . . he’s my boyfriend. He’s taking me out to dinner tonight.” She shared a quick smile with Riley.

Dia looked positively delighted. This would certainly dominate tonight’s conversation with her friends.

“How wonderful! I’m very pleased to meet you, Riley. I’m sure you’ll take very good care of that young lady.”

Alex had no idea if she said it in a completely innocent manner or if it was actually more of a challenge. She almost giggled to think of Dia giving Riley a subtle threat behind that pleased smile of hers.

Very seriously, he promised, “Yes, ma’am.”

Her smile turned to one of satisfaction. “Enjoy your evening.”

“You too,” Alex replied.

She and Riley walked to the street where he’d parked his truck. He opened the door for her, just as he did whenever he picked her up for work. She had been positively thrilled to ride with him the first time. There was just something about old trucks that couldn’t be beat.

When Riley got in, he said, “I have an idea your landlady could be dangerous if provoked.”

Alex laughed outright. “You caught that then? I’m thinking the same thing. I could just see her gathering up her friends and coming after you with brooms and knitting needles if you break my heart.”

He glanced over at her, his smile teasing, yet serious at the same time. “I’ll have to make sure not to break your heart then.”
