Smitten Book Club

by Colleen Coble, Kristin Billerbeck,

Denise Hunter, Diann Hunt

Smitten Book ClubThe century-old Gentlewoman’s Guide to Love and Courtship is no ordinary book club choice. But for the little book club in Smitten, Vermont, it might be their best pick yet!

The thick, leathery tome Heather pulled out of the dusty cardboard box was definitely coming home with her. Not only was The Gentlewoman’s Guide to Love and Courtship an appealing curiosity by virtue of its title; it was also written by Smitten, Vermont native Pearl Chambers, a local gentlewoman from three generations back.

Little did Heather know the repercussions this little curiosity would have on her and her friends’ romantic exploits.

When Heather and her fellow book club members begin passing the book around, their respective interpretations are unleashed on their respective love lives . . . for better or for worse. Is it a mystery? An idealist fantasy? An intimation of Jane Austen? As romantic love finds its way to each woman, the Guide proves itself both surprisingly prescient and hilariously irrelevant.

What’s more, a handwritten inscription indicates that the arcane book might hold the only extant clues leading to buried gold—exactly what one of the members needs to keep her house. How could they not go treasure hunting?

In this remarkable collaborative novel, besties Colleen Coble, Kristin Billerbeck, Denise Hunter, and Diann Hunt tackle the tale of the Gentlewoman’s Guide by writing for one book club member apiece. Smitten Book Club is a hopeful, hilarious story of friendship and healing, written by friends for friends.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Another collection of Smitten stories, and another great book by four really awesome writers! Smitten, Vermont is a romantic little town and from it comes four really awesome romantic, mysterious stories.

Heather finds an old romantic advice book written by a one time famous Vermont Resident at a yard sale. This book, The Gentlewoman’s Guide to Love and Courtship, had a note in it saying that there are clues to lost gold within its pages. As the ladies in this book, Heather, Abby, Lia and Molly find romance in their own lives, will they take advise from this old forgotten book?

The four Novella’s in this book;  Love by the Book.. by Colleen Coble, Shelved Under Romance.. by Kristin Billerbeck, A New Chapter.. by Diann Hunt, Happily Ever After.. by Denise Hunter, are just a really fantastic read! I thoroughly enjoyed following the romantic lives of each of these four ladies. I loved each character, and I really don’t have a favorite! They are all good, and I really want to encourage you to pick up a copy of Smitten Book Club, and also check out the first two books in this series as well!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Is your life perfect? Yeah, mine isn’t either, and neither is anyone elses! And that is why we all need this book by Holly Gerth! Holly guides us through chapters such as: Who You Are Is Still the Same; You’re Stronger Than You Know; Your Mind Is A Powerful Gift; Your Heart Is Worth Guarding and You Can Keep from Sabotaging Yourself. And this is just some of the topics Ms. Gerth teaches us in this wonderful book. This would make an awesome individual Bible study or a study for a small group of Sunday school class. I didn’t go through it this time as a study, but I plan to do that to get the full effect of this book.

I highly recommend this to every woman out there because every woman can find something here to help them in some way! Join thousands of woman as they study through You’re Going to Be Okay! Shadows of the Past

ABOUT THIS BOOK

While she’s stalking the truth . . . someone is stalking her.

Psychology professor and criminal profiler Taylor Martin prides herself on being able to solve any crime, except the one she wants most desperately to solve–the disappearance of her father twenty years ago. When she finally has a lead on his whereabouts, Taylor returns home to Logan Point, Mississippi, to investigate. But as she works to uncover the truth, someone else will do almost anything to keep her from it.
Nick Sinclair pens mystery novels for a living, but the biggest mystery to him is how he can ever get over the death of his wife–a tragedy he believes he could have prevented. Now that his estranged brother is the only family he has left, Nick sets out to find him. But when he crosses paths with Taylor, all he seems to find is trouble.
Join the chase as Taylor and Nick search the murky shadows of the past for the keys to unlocking the present–and moving into a future they never imagined.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Looking for her father ends up landing Taylor Martin into situations that she never expected. Taylor couldn’t find closure about her father walking out on his family until she had a chance to ask him why. But someone is trying to stop Taylor from finding her dad. And meeting Nick Sinclair makes Taylor’s life even more interesting. Especially since Nick’s brother is Taylor’s number one suspect.

This is an awesome debut novel from author Patricia Bradley. After reading the first few pages, I was captured! The characters were solid and believable, and I could truly feel the emotions Taylor felt when she talked about her dad. Tensions were high throughout the book because Taylor was getting to close to answers, which would expose to many people. I don’t like saying too much about what happens in the book, because it ruins it for me when people do that, so I will just say if you love suspense/thrillers, then this book is a must for you to read. Believe me, you will not be disappointed in the time and money spent on this one!!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Bethany takes on the  job of cleaning out the house of five sisters, sisters that did not throw anything away, nor did they keep their house clean like most Amish women did. It is long past time for these sisters to have church services at their place, but with all of the mess they have hoarded for so long, there is no room for all of the people. While spending time with the sisters, Bethany finds out interesting things they did with their time, helping her to understand why they didn’t take the time to clean their house.

Suzanne Woods Fisher does a really good job weaving life and its good and bad times of these characters, bringing them altogether in a story. There are a lot characters, and a lot of stuff going on, but I fell in love with them all! Each character made the story even more interesting and enjoyable in their own way.   And I really enjoyed this story, and was happy to revisit the Schrock family and their friends and neighbors in this Amish community in Stoney Ridge. To find out what happened to all of the characters, I encourage you to pick up a copy of The Calling, and before you read this book, it would help to read The Letters, the first book in this series, first.

And there is the Englisch friend staying at the Inn trying to find her way in life, Jimmy Fisher who is hot on Bethany, Jake Hertzler who broke Bethany’s heart and ended up being a fake, Bethany’s mom in which finally Bethany and her brother found closure because they were able to see first hand at what happened to her.

Kregel Publishers presetns The Vicar’s Wife by Katharine Swartz

The Vicar’s Wife

By Katharine Swartz

About the book:

A New Yorker all her life, Jane Hatton loved her job as the head of a charity championing women’s rights, but her fourteen-year-old daughter, Natalie, had fallen in with the wrong crowd at her Manhattan school. So Jane and her British husband, Andrew, have decided to move their family to the English countryside.
The Hattons have bought the large old vicarage in a small village on the Cumbrian coast, near Andrew’s new job. The silence and solitude of a remote village is quite a change. Natalie hates her new school, and eleven-year-old Ben struggles academically. Only seven-year-old Merrie enjoys country life. Has Jane made a horrible mistake? What of her career? Her own identity?
Putting on a brave face for the family, Jane tackles renovating the rambling, drafty old house. When she finds a scrap of a very old shopping list, she grows curious about Alice, the vicar’s wife who lived there years before.
As the twin narratives unfold–of Jane in the present and Alice in the 1930s–we discover that both are on a journey to discover their true selves, and to address their deepest fears.
MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
The Vicar’s Wife is a story between two women, very different, yet alike in some ways. Jane was lonely after her family’s move to an old vicarage in a small village on the coast of the Cumbrian in England. She missed her friends back in New York, but her husband was thrilled to be back home in England. When Jane found an old shopping list in the house, she is curious about the lady who wrote the list, and what happened with her.
This was an interesting and intriguing story about a Jane, and the lady from the past, Alice, who lived in this old house years ago. As the story unfolds, the journey of both ladies showed that both were looking for the same things in life, to find out about themselves. The author did a wonderful job going back and forth between the lives of both Jane and Alice. She weaves the stories together in a unique way so readers could understand where the plot was going. The setting was beautiful, and I really enjoyed the detailed way Ms Swartz described every scene. There are more books in this series, which I plan to  read as well. I highly encourage you to pick up a copy of The Vicar’s Wife for your reading enjoyment. You will be delighted with this read! And I encourage you to check out the other books by Katharine Swartz.

CFBA presents Gabriel’s Bride by Amy Lillard

”’

This week, the

Christian Fiction Blog Alliance

is introducing

Gabriel’s Bride

B&H Books (February 1, 2014)

by

Amy LillardABOUT THE AUTHOR:

I’m a wife, mother, and bona fide Southern belle. Published author, expert corn bread maker, and Squirrel Princess.

I live in Tulsa, though I was born in Mississippi. I moved to the Sooner State when I was seventeen and met my soul mate and best friend not long after. I’ve retained a little of my Mississippi accent though most people think I’m from Texas. (?) Rob and I have been married for over twenty years and have a son–a mom proclaimed prodigy, of course!

I love homemade tacos, shoes, and romance novels–not necessarily in that order. I’m a big fan of country music, a staunch proponent of saving the Oxford comma, and I’m shamefully obsessed with all things Harry Potter.

I believe that God is love. I guess that’s why I adore romances.

I have always been intrigued with the Amish culture, their gentle ways and slower-paced lifestyle. (And I love, love, love the fact that they stay married for their lifetime.) But until recently I never thought to blend this interest with my penchant for romance. Okay, okay, I’m a bit old-fashioned and even enjoy the gender roles that are present in this culture. I love to cook and take care of my family. Yes, that’s me June Cleaver with a laptop.

I dislike people trying to convince me to read the Twilight series (I’ll get to it or I won’t, either way I’m good with it), gratuitous violence, and strawberry ice cream. (I know I’m alone on this last one, and again, I’m good with it.)

Favorite movies–(besides HP) French Kiss, Maid of Honor, A Lot Like Love, Just Married, and Sweet Home Alabama. Oh, and Miss Congeniality, Sabrina (both versions) and a 1940′s movie called Dear Ruth. If you haven’t seen it, you should! A-dorable. Anything with Doris Day and most all of Marilyn’s and Audrey’s.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Rachel Yoder has two choices: marry Gabriel Fisher or move to Ohio. As an orphan, Rachel doesn’t have much to offer; any match she can make will be a good one. She just didn’t plan on Gabriel with his big hands and permanent frown.
As a widower Gabriel needs help caring for the farm and his six children. But he never thought he’d marry a slip of a girl who barely reaches his chin.
Yet as time passes, Gabriel finds himself thinking about a real marriage. They have spoken vows to God and each other, but can he risk his heart with Rachel?

If you would like to read the first chapter of Gabriel’s Bride, go HERE.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Wow I think this is my favorite book in the Clover Ridge Series, of course that’s what I said about each of the others when I read them! Amy Lillard was on my ‘Favorite Author’s’ list  when I read the first book in this series, Katie’s Choice.

After her aunt’s death, Rachel needed a place to stay, and Gabriel needed a housekeeper, so taking Gabriel up on his offer to move in with his family should solve both of their problems, right? Well it did until the elders of the Amish church starts hearing the gossip from the Amish grapevine, and Gabriel never thought he would marry a tiny someone like Rachel.

I was so into this story! Both Rachel and Gabriel were living a life of hurts from the past. Rachel losing her family in an accident, and Gabriel dealing with losing his wife while trying to work the farm and raising their six kids. I felt so sorry for Rachel because I  would be just like her if I had to cook, clean, and do laundry for six guys! As well as trying to keep up with everything else Amish women were required to do. There were so many things happening, with some of the boys trying to run Rachel away, and Rachel and Gideon and their attraction for each other, which couldn’t happen! It seemed everything was against them.  But that is all I am going to tell you, because you need to find out the outcome of this dysfunctional family for yourself. And you will experience a wonderful, exciting, and entertaining time of enjoyable reading! I love, love Amy Lillard, and will keep all three books in this series so I can read it again! I encourage you to run out and grab a copy of this book, or run to the computer and order online! You will sure not be disappointed!

I received this book from CFBA and B&H Books to read and review.  I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 55.

New From Revel “With Autumns ‘s Return” by Amanda Cabot

 “With Autumns ‘s Return”

by Amanda Cabot

Amanda Cabot

About This Book

She’s planning on instant success. She didn’t plan on love.

When Elizabeth Harding arrives in Cheyenne to open her medical practice, she is confident that the future is as bright as the warm Wyoming sun. Certain she’ll have a line of patients eager for her services, she soon discovers the town may not welcome a new physician–especially a lady doctor. Even Jason Nordling, the handsome young attorney next door, seems to disapprove of her chosen profession.

When a web of deceit among Cheyenne’s wealthiest residents threatens to catch Elizabeth and Jason in its snare, they must risk working together to save one of Elizabeth’s patients–even if it means falling in love.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

Elizabeth Harding has a big surprise dumped on here when she opened her medical practice in her new hometown in Wyoming. She thought she would at least have a few patients, but it has been weeks, and still no one. And handsome neighbor Jason Nordling didn’t help at all either. Actually both of them got off on a really bad start. But how long with this doom last Elizabeth?

I really hate to see this series end. I was hoping for at least one more book about the Harding sisters and their move to Wyoming. This third book, With Autumns Return was a really fantastic read. I loved the characters, and as Elizabeth started getting to know the folks who were now her neighbors, she finds out just how the people of Cheyenne  lived. And it wasn’t until after many difficult situations that people really started realizing who Elizabeth was. I really liked the strength of the characters, and I especially enjoyed the quirky and sometime tense relationship between Elizabeth and Jason. The twists and turns in their relationship made the story a lot more fun to enjoyable to read. I really want to encourage you to pick up a copy of With Autumn’s Return to read and enjoy and if you want to read about all three sisters, I suggest checking out the first two book in this Westward Winds Series.

I received this book from  Revell Publishers to read and review.  I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part

Grass Roads presents Seams Unlikely by Nancy Zieman

Grass Roads presents

Seams Unlikely

by Nancy Zieman

About Seams Unlikely

In an age when hard-working women don’t know if we should lean in, lean out, or lean on someone, Nancy Zieman’s voice of calm, experienced authority is welcome. The lessons she shares are ones every businesswoman should take to heart.

In Seams Unlikely, Nancy:

  • Shares her life story for the first time

  • Gives details of the onset of Bell’s Palsy and how it played a part during school

  • Reveals the intricate involvement of 4-H in her development

  • Tells, step-by-step, how she grew Nancy’s Notions from a basement in her home into a multi-million dollar business

  • Includes behind-the-scenes information on the growth of Sewing with Nancy from filming in her living room to a long-term partnership with Wisconsin Public Television

  • Shows pictures of the people, buildings, and places that played key roles along the path of her life

Reading of the growth of Nancy’s family (she is a married
mother of two, one son by birth, one by adoption) alongside the growth of her show and business is both familiar and instructive to working moms. Nancy created solutions in both the workplace and at home, to carve a niche uniquely suited to her situation and talents. It’s a goal to which many of us aspire. And Nancy Zieman’s story gives us key insight.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

I started watching Sewing with Nancy years ago, because a lot of times I visited my aunt Edna, she would be watching Nancy. My aunt is an avid seamstress, and she get a lot of ideas from the show.  I really never knew that she had Bell’s palsy until about a year ago when I was viewing her website. When I saw this book up for review, I was honored to be able to read and review Seams Unlikely. I found Nancy’s story to be one of the heartwarming stories I have ever read. Reading how Nancy started sewing, and it growing into the TV show Sewing with Nancy is amazing in itself. But the read about the difficult situations and the struggles she went through then, and has throughout her life, well I am just in awe of this special lady and her great success.

For all of you who enjoy sewing, I highly recommend this book for your to read, and if you struggle with a disability, or difficult situations, this is a must read for you! Everyone can learn from reading Nancy Zieman’s heartwarming story. Life seemed to be against her many times, but with Nancy’s determination to survive and be successful, well being the longest run sewing show on TV says it all!

I received this book from Glass Roads to read and review.  I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 55.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Nancy Zieman is host of Sewing with Nancy, TV’s longest-running sewing show, which she co-produces with Wisconsin Public Television. It has been on-air since 1982. A Promise Kept

by Robin Lee Hatcher

 A-Promise-Kept-e1387321767493

God was going to save her marriage, Allison was sure of it. But neither her husband nor her marriage had been saved.

What had become of His promise?

Tony Kavanagh had been Allison’s dream-come-true. They were in love within days, engaged within weeks, married and pregnant within a year. Her cup bubbled over with joy . . . but years later, that joy had been extinguished by unexpected trials.

The day Allison issued her husband an ultimatum, she thought it might save him. She never expected he would actually leave. She was certain God had promised to heal; it was clear that she’d misunderstood.

Now, living in the quiet mountain cabin she inherited from her single, self-reliant Great Aunt Emma, Allison must come to terms with her grief and figure out how to adapt to small town life. But when she finds a wedding dress and a collection of journals in Emma’s attic, a portrait of her aunt emerges that takes Allison completely by surprise: a portrait of a heartbroken woman surprisingly like herself.

As Allison reads the incredible story of Emma’s life in the 1920s and 1930s, she is forced to ask a difficult question: Does she really surrender every piece of her life to the Lord?

Drawing from her own heart-wrenching story of redemption, A Promise Kept is Robin Lee Hatcher’s emotionally charged thanksgiving to a God who answers prayers—in His own time and His own ways.

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

At first, I wasn’t sure I would like A Promise Kept, but the more I read, the more I loved this story. Allison’s dreams were shattered when her husband Tony his drinking addition over her, ending in a divorce. Allison moved into a mountain home she inherited from a great aunt. A lot of things happened in this story. Allison started reading her Great Aunt Emma’s journals, and other circumstances happened that drew Allison closer to her aunt, and closer to God.

Robin Lee Hatcher does an excellent job of switching this story back and forth between Aunt Emma’s life decades ago and current event happening now. It was very easy for me to keep up with both stories and I really enjoyed them both. But I think Aunt Emma’s story is the one that gripped my heart the most. As the secrets were being unveiled, the more my heart went out to this special lady. And I don’t want to tell anything because it will give it away for you!

I highly recommend A Promise Kept by Robin Lee Hatcher. It is a nice, clean enjoyable read, and its just plain good for the soul to read a heartwarming story like this. I love it all, the cover, the story and the ending.
