Book Summary

Irene and Domingo Garcia began their married lives at sixteen, already expecting a
baby. Their first ten years together included Domingo’s alcoholism and abuse, and
Irene’s desperate prayers for answers. Then a miracle happened: Domingo pleaded
for forgiveness. As God healed their marriage, Irene and Domingo adopted a little
girl. And a new season began for an imperfect couple who were willing to say
each other and to God.
Over the past forty-five years, the Garcias have birthed, fostered, or adopted thirty-
two children. Their story holds difficult endings as well as promising new beginnings.
Above all, their story reminds us what can happen when ordinary people submit to
God’s call.  Rich in Love

is about a family cemented in hope. About a need to love the orphan.
And about a God who never, ever gives up.
Irene  and Domingo Garcia’s life didn’t get off to a really good start, when at sixteen they married, expecting their first. That in itself is difficult for a couple so young. And to add Domingo’s drinking and abuse, didn’t make for a happy marriage at all. This book shows the changes that happens in a person life when they give God control.
Rich in Love tells the stories of real people, and how God can change lives. Lives that are so messed up that there is no way out, except turning to the Lord. I appreciate this couple and these individuals for the willingness to tell about the darker sides of their lives. This is truly a book of love, patience, forgiveness and God’s Amazing Grace! I encourage any couple, whether you are having a tough time or not, to read and study this book. There is something for everyone here.

Love’s Sweet Beginning by Ann Shorney from Revell

Love Sweet Beginning

by Ann Shorney

What will it take for a once-privileged young woman to make her way in the world?

It isn’t Cassie Haddon’s fault that she has reached the age of twenty-five without possessing any useful skills. Until the War Between the States, she always had servants. Since then, she and her mother have been forced to rely on family to care for them. But now the well of human kindness has run dry–and Cassie must find work to support them.
Unfortunately, leaving the past behind is easier said than done, and Cassie must summon all of her courage and wits to convince local restaurateur and grocer Jacob West that she’s exactly what his business needs.
With her signature sweet romance, Ann Shorey weaves a tale of two people from different backgrounds finding common ground and the hope of a bright future together.

I have been looking forward to reading Love’s Sweet Beginning, the third book in Ann Shorney’s Sisters at Heart Series, and I loved it, loved it loved it! I really like Cassie, and as she struggled to find her way in real life after being pampered all of her life was heartwarming. At least she was willing to work as a dishwasher in order to provide for she and her mother. I got annoyed at Cassie’s mother though, the way she expected to move in on someone and have them take care of her hand and foot. This mother and daughter pair had a lot to learn about living, thanks to the war that took everything from them. This is a wonderfully written historical fiction, and I know you will enjoy it just as much as I did! This is a delightful read that everyone will enjoy. Though it is better to read the three books in order, it is just as interesting reading Love’s Sweet Beginning as a stand alone!

Rachel by Jill Eileen Smith from Revell

by Jill Eileen Smith

Can true love overcome a legacy of betrayal?

Rachel wants nothing more than for her older half sister Leah to wed and move out of their household. Leah wishes her father would find a good man who would love her alone. Unbeknownst to either of them, Jacob is making his way to their home, trying to escape a past laced with deceit and find the future God has promised him.
But the past comes back to haunt Jacob when he finds himself on the receiving end of treachery. The man who wanted only one woman ends up with sisters who have never gotten along and now must spend the rest of their lives sharing a husband. In the power struggles that follow, only one woman will triumph . . . or will she?
Combining meticulous research with her own imaginings, bestselling author Jill Eileen Smith not only tells one of the most famous love stories of all time but will manage to surprise even those who think they know the story inside and out.

I have always thought Rachel to be a interesting woman of the Bible, so I was excited to read about her in Jill Eileen Smith’s new book, Rachel.  And as usual, Ms. Smith delivers a story that will stick with you for a long time!

Already familiar with the story of Leah, Rachel and Jacob, this book brought the story to life as I read each page, and I loved imagining being there as these years passed by. And as I always am, I was really not happy that Laban deceived Jacob on his first seven years of working with him and gave him Leah, instead of Rachel as was promised, but that’s the way it was. I wanted to feel that way towards Leah, but she was deceived as well really because she knew she would always be second best to Jacob. And I could go on and on because I love this story, but I won’t. Ms. Smith did her homework well in researching the Biblical account of this story very well. The characters were amazing in their rolls throughout this story. This is fiction, so this is the author’s account of what Rachel’s life may have been like, but to me she does an awesome job of taking us back to that time in history.

If you enjoy historical fiction, and Biblical fiction, this is a must read for you and you will not be disappointed!
