The war is over, but her struggle is just beginning.

Charlotte Fraser returns to her late father’s once-flourishing rice plantation on the Waccamaw River, determined to continue growing the special kind of rice known as Carolina Gold. But Fairhaven Plantation is in ruins, the bondsmen are free, and money is scarce.

To make ends meet, Charlotte reluctantly accepts a position as tutor to the young daughters of Nicholas Betancourt, heir to the neighboring Willowood Plantation. Then Nick’s quest to prove his ownership of Willowood sends Charlotte on a dangerous journey that reveals an old family mystery—and threatens all that she holds dear.

Inspired by the life of a 19th century woman rice planter, Carolina Gold continues Dorothy Love’s winning tradition of weaving together mystery, romance, and rich historical detail, bringing to life the story of one young woman’s struggle to restore her ruined world.

My thoughts on this book!

This was such a good book to read. One interesting thing was that Carolina Gold was based on the real life of a Southern Lowcountry lady rice farmer. Charlotte, the main character returns to her family’s plantation to pick up the pieces of her life after the war took most of their life and belongings. Rice farming is all Charlotte knew, and before he father’s death, she had promised him that she would keep the rice farm going. But one thing missing was a document stating when the Fairhaven Plantation land was recorded in the family name. Can she loose this plantation that is her life?

Carolina Gold is so full of historical information, and I especially enjoyed learning about rice farming. Just after the war was not an easy time for anyone. With the slaves now free, it was difficult to find help to on the huge farms like before because the slaves were no longer owned. My heart went out to Charlotte as she did what she could to make ends meet, and her teaching other children was especially heartwarming. She definitely had a soft heart for children and their education. As far as the rice fields, I am not sure I would have kept planting or not, since she kept losing her crops to the heavy rains. And then there was neighbor Nicholas Betancourt and his daughters. A neighbor that could own her plantation. Dorothy Love weaves together a story of loss and hurt, acceptance and love that will warm your heart. I loved the history in this book and the author’s detailed accounts of each scene shows the deep research the author did to make sure the scenes were as accurate as could be. I highly recommend this book to everyone, and especially those who enjoy historical fiction.

I received this book from Litfuse and Thomas Nelson to read and review.  I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16
