Finding Peace in a Busy World
By Cheryl C. Malandrinos
At some point this year, I realized my automatic response when asked how things are going around here is “crazy, but good.” There is so much to do that it seems relaxation time doesn’t exist; or at bare minimum, my goal is to get to that one weekend in the span of two months where our family doesn’t have plans and can simply enjoy each other.
I’ve been blessed with a wonderful mother-in-law whose has known the Lord for decades. I can’t say I’m always the best at listening to what she has to say, but about a month ago as she listened to my latest litany of to-do items, she asked me where my Bible was. I retrieved it from my nightstand and handed it to her. She opened it to Philippians and read:
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Phil 4:6-7, NIV)
She knows how often I try to be everything to all people, and how sometimes the chaos that has erupted around me is of my own doing. But filling life up with things and tasks without stopping and seeking God’s guidance first, can often lead us to be overwhelmed. How can we know what we should be focusing on if we don’t bother to ask for direction from the very One who gave us life and has a plan for us?
So I stopped. Over the following weeks, I pulled out my Bible and prayed, really prayed. What direction do You want me to go, Lord? What should I lay aside? What do You want me to focus on? I can’t say the answers were all what I expected, but they have definitely brought about a greater sense of peace than I’ve felt in some time.
In Colossians we are told to let the peace of God rule in our hearts, and I had been sorely lacking in doing that; acting as if I, not God, is ruler of my life. It is only through submission to God’s will that true peace can be found. The holidays are quickly approaching, which seems to be a crazy time for everyone. I hope and pray that I remember how to let the peace of God rule in my heart, just as much as I pray that you will experience a peaceful and joyful holiday season.
May God bless you this Thanksgiving and throughout the year.
About the book:
Obed is in the hills outside Bethlehem when the angels appear to announce the Savior’s birth. Can he trust that the miracle of the first Christmas will keep his flock safe while he visits the newborn King?
Off in the distance, a wolf howled. Obed moved closer to his flock, scanning the hills for any sign of a pack that might race in and steal his sheep. His family depended upon the sheep for food and their wool for clothing. No sheep would be lost under his watch.
He shivered inside his cloak. While the days were getting warmer, the nights still chilled him. He walked over to the large fire blazing inside the pit. He rubbed his hands together and held them up to the fire to warm them.
Above him, the sky twinkled with millions of stars. Obed couldn’t remember a night so clear.
Suddenly, a bright light filled the sky.
Obed trembled. “Father, what is happening?”
